i used ubuntu maybe for a year but i dislike unity and i installed gnome 3 via ppa but it wasn't so stable.now i installed fedora on my netbook and really like!Gnome 3 is very stable but i have a problem with my printer.Fedora notices it plugged in my printer HP Laserjet p1005 but it doesn't find any drivers.

I am running F15 Beta i686 (Gnome3) Desktop on a dual-core, 4 Mb DDR2 system. I already installed hplip and hpijs drivers and connected HP LaserJet 5MP printer to the parallel port of my PC. Set up was by running "system-config-printer", adding device URI=parallel:/dev/lp0, and selecting approriate driver (CUPS+Gutenprint (en) for the printer. However, when I chose to print a test page, nothing came out and the printer window says the printer is not connected. This is even though I can print from Fedora14 installed on the same PC.

I've been banging my head for two days now trying to get my HP Laserjet 1020 to work. I've gotten the drivers working on the box itself (Opensuse 11.3 x64), but I couldn't get it to print from my laptop (Ubuntu Lucid). Ideally, I'd like to end up with a functional printer which can be used either from the desktop machine (Opensuse) or from the laptop (Ubuntu) through NFS.
After so many attempts at fixing it, I've not made it such that I can't print at all, from either system. I'm considering re-installing Opensuse (or just going back to Kubuntu, which recognizes the printer without a hitch). But before I do so, I figured I'd ask here.
Here are my issues, and attempts at solution:
1) I tried adding the printer both through CUPS, through YAST and through hp-setup, using the hpijs driver. Each time the printer is recognized, but a test page won't print.
2) I tried building the foo2zjs driver, as outlined here: HowTo Install a HP LaserJet 1020 printer in Suse 10.x, 11.x It came up with dependency problems repeatedly on the last step (sudo make install-hotplug) . I gave up when it told me that it was conflicting with an installed package (system-config-printer-udev) which was not installed.
3) Perhaps related problem: on the CUPS web interface, I get a "forbidden" message when I try to change the options on the CUPS server to allow remote access.
Note that:
a) I've already added myself to the lp group.
b) I changed the permissions (+rx) on the /dev/lp0 to allow myself access
c) I'm able to get to the CUPS page on the client machine, so the port 631 (I think) must be open. I say "I think," because there's no option to allow CUPS in YAST firewall settings, for some reason.
I've been following guides here and there, but I'm afraid that I've borked my cupsd.conf file through all the edits. Here it is:

hplip is installed (3.11.5), but it does not start the printer queue. If I click to start the queue, it seems to start, but no printing jobs are sent to the printer.
opening the hplip gui spits out an error message: device communication error 5012
Although HP claims driver is compatible with 9.10 Ubuntu can't seem to find driver.

I am not using Samba. The setup went fine, but I am not able to print to it. There are other clients (all Windows) that are printing fine to this print server. The following is what I see in the /var/log/cups/error_log:
[Job 3] recoverable: Unable to connect to printer; will retry in 30 seconds...
I am using DHCP in this LAN. Ping is working fine (client's hosts file updated with the print server's ip address.). This looks like a networking issue.
Does anyone have a workaround for non existent model specific drivers for my HP Laserjet CP1525nw printer?
I bought it advertised as Linux compatible but cannot locate drivers for it. SUSE 11.2 by the way.
It is HP themselves that sell it as compatible with Linux and are refusing to accept that their own UK website product description is misleading.

When I try to load up the printer driver downloaded from the Lexmark site I am asked to enter a root administrator password, but when I enter the password I used to setup the OS it will not accept it. I have reviewed the "sudo" terminal password info, but as I am a newbie I was concerned about wrecking the installation.

It is a printer with standalone network capability and is connected directly to my router and has a static IP number. We have a few Windows computers at home and they had no problem detecting the printer, installing the drivers and working. Unfortunately my Ubuntu computer recognises the printer and I can even access it's setup and diagnositcs through its IP number. However when I try to add it as a printer, drivers for it cannot be located. #ve tried setting it up three ways:1. I have of course been trying to do all of these as root. That's the limit of my knowledge reached and searches on the net aren't helping me either. The printer works fine directly connected via USB, so the drivers are on the computer somewhere. How do I get them set up to use the printer on the network?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI heard that the new release would work smoothly and decided to install fc15 on 5 computers at once (four 64-bit AMDs running RAID and an old 32-bit Compaq laptop). I now have only 1 of 4 printers working. One was an old and slow but reliable HP6P and the others Samsungs of various ages. I tried the workaround suggested in another thread for the HP6P (using MAKEDEV to recognize the parallel port), but I'm still unable to install the printer--the installation hangs searching for a printer. And Fedora 15 has apparently broken the proprietary Samsung driver.
The only working printer at the moment is a Samsung 2250 (the oldest) which has an open source driver, and that one won't currently print from the internet (it used to under fc14). It's pretty sad when a new release breaks computers whose major function is effectively (or rather ineffectively) a typewriter. I've tried both local and network installations using Gnome, system-config-printer, and the Samsung Configurator, but nothing seems to work. I hope a fix is forthcoming from Red Hat, Samsung, or the readers soon. I need my typewriter.

The printing works but when I click on File->Print on any application (Open Office or Document Viewer), the message "Getting printer information" is beside the printer name and the print button is disabled. After 5 or so seconds, the print button becomes enabled and I can print. This happens every time but did not when I first installed the printer. I would prefer to determine the cause rather than delete and re-install the printer.

I have Fedora 12 distro. I tried to use commandls | lpr for fun but the error message has arised I dont have the printer, the driver for it, if to say more precisely. But when I inserted the disk with software, the CD-ROM disappeared from my computer. What should I do to install it? I have no experience installing something yet.
