Fedora :: Gnome Shell Crashing After Removing 'user Theme' Extension
May 27, 2011
Since I do not like any of shell themes i downloaded, today I decided to remove user theme shell-extension.I removed it from the : Add/remove software, from menu. After logging out, and in, I keep getting : Gnome shell crashed, please log out.I have downloaded few shell themes from gnome look, and they all work.. But did not like them, always used default theme, so I decided to remove extension..
I removed "user theme" extension, but I did not delete "theme selector extension" from ~/.local/gnome-shell/ extensions.I just deleted it's folder from extensions, restarted, and I'm back in my Fedora.

I have gnome-shell installed on Ubuntu 11.04, and installed gnome-tweak. When I open it and try to change the theme, however, it says the user-theme extension is not enabled. How to I fix this?

I did a clean install for ubuntu 11.04. Having seen the power of Gnome 3 (with Fedora) I installed it right away. Some minor problem arose and I had to deinstall accessibility themes and install the "standard" gnome themes. However there is one more problem and I've added a screen shot to show the problem. As you can see, the gnome desktop seems pretty cool but however the tweak tool doesn't show properly (empathy and other apps neither).
Besides the fact that the themes don't properly show in this screen I also get the error "User Theme extension not enabled" now I get the feeling these problems are related, but how do I fix it? I've searched everywhere but as far as I know I seem to be the only one with this problem. I would love to take the full advantage of a Gnome 3 desktop but this is getting to be a big "bump" in the road.

I am trying to theme my Gnome Shell experience, and I have little complaints for the Shell Theme/GTK3 side of things. However, even though there are GTK2 files included in the packages, my GTK2 apps are theme-wise broken. The colors are not on par and the buttons are not round as the theme should say, as it's still supposed to work since the files are provided.

All of a sudden my gnome theme changed and various apps including thunderbird and firefox started crashing. I've traced the first occurrence back to the following errors, starting with a segmentation fault in canberra-gtk-pl in kern.log:

GNOME 3 issues, I got everything figured out and was trying to get some extensions installed. I successfully installed the alternative shutdown menu and the applications menu. I tried to install alternate-tab and user-theme and they both caused gnome3 to boot into IceWM...I removed all the folders from /usr/share/gnome-shell/extensions and home/<user>/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions and it fixed it. I read somewhere about them being outdated if a GNOME 3 update was released.
The two extensions I did install were from New GNOME Shell Extensions That Provide A GNOME2-Like User Experience ~ Web Upd8: Ubuntu / Linux blog and not the GNOME 3 website. The extensions that crashed GNOME were from all over, INCLUDING the GNOME website. I'd like to get the system monitor and a weather applet in the panel and the alternate-tab and change themes but I can't find any that work. [URL]. I tried to use the themeselector extension from here and I think another one or two, however, they were also a few that crashed my GNOME...

I've recently upgraded to gnome shell in experimental, and I like it so far. However, the window borders and themes look like how Gnome 2 did before you install gtk2-engines and some themes. Are there any themes in the repositories that I'm missing, or are they just not there yet?

Since I installed Fedora15 (2 or 3 months ago) I've been trying to use the alternate-tab extension (I just HATE the new behaviour). But every time I try to use it Gnome crashes (I get a message along the lines of "Oh no, something went wrong...") and I have to log out.
Is this extension working for somebody? Is there any alternative (short of not using Gnome3 )?

I overwrote this laptop from an Ubuntu installation to Fedora 15 (Gnome 3 doesn't work, in fallback mode) and unfortunately the theme is messed up. Using Gnome-Tweak tool I cannot change the shell theme, instead I get the message Quote:Could not list shell extensionsAny way to bypass or clear out so it returns to default?---------- Post added at 10:36 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:12 PM ----------After reboot I had kernel crashes and the system would not boot up anymore. So I re-installed over the previous one, and modified the .gconf, .gconfd, .gnome2 and .gnome2_private before connecting my /home directory to the folder

My default Ubuntu theme (and all the other smooth and new looking ones that ive tried) crash one or two minutes after logging in. My computer is up to date! The theme it gets set to is older and boxy looking. The question is, then, how do I get the default Ubuntu Theme to work when it crashes shortly after logging in?

is there some wiki page on GNOME or Fedora that list which graphics cards work without problems on Fedora 15 with GNOME Shell? I have tried 3 older cards and they all failed, so I would like to share this info with others so people know which cards to avoid if they want to use full features of GNOME 3 via GNOME Shell.

I have an interesting question. I had originally installed Fedora 12 with the Gnome desktop. Later i also installed the kde desktop and alternated between them. What would haven if i removed the gnome desktop elements? Would it function and only be a single boot kde system? Or would it kill the whole thing?

I've been using Gnome for several years and haven't had any real problems with it. Now, however, I find the descriptions of what Gnome 3 and the Gnome Shell quite unsettling. That is, the Gnome devs have added a number of things I don't want, removed things I do want and made it impossible to configure Gnome 3 to work anywhere near what I want without adding unsupported third-party extensions. (Note: this is neither a complaint nor a flame; it's just a statement of my personal taste and any attempts to argue about it will be ignored.)
Currently, I have installed XFCE and am very happy with it on my two F14 boxes. I know that if and when I move to F15 (or F16 if 15 continues to be as problematic as it is so far) the upgrade will include Gnome 3, even though I don't use it. I'd like, therefore, to remove it but without removing any bits and pieces of it that are needed by whatever programs I'm using. What's the safest way to do this?

After I had upgraded the system to Fedora 14, the icons for pretty much everything except for programs and plain text files in gnome theme (and every other theme that shares them) became inaccessible - they are replaced by a standard icon that appears when no other is found. Other themes, that share no icon with gnome (tango, gnome-colors, etc.), work correctly. I'm using Xfce desktop.
I've deleted icon-theme.cache, but it did nothing.
Any suggestions, what may be causing this?

Just upgraded to Fedora 15 this afternoon, and for the most part there weren't any serious issues with it (except for rpmfusion lagging on a F15 yum repo). I installed the XFCE spin, and a lot of GNOME-specific apps don't respect my GTK+ theme at all. Screenshot: [URL]... On the left are two "XFCE" apps (Mousepad and Task Manager), on the right are two GNOME apps (gedit and the NetworkManager "Connection Information" window). Is there an easy way to fix this? I have a custom Murrine theme set, but the problem is still there using the built-in themes such as Glossy too.

I recently installed Ubuntu 11.04 with Unity as the default desktop environment, but I wanted Gnome 3 instead. So the installation of Gnome 3 and Gnome Shell went through, and I'm presented with a nice "gnomeish" gdm, but when I type my user password and try to log in all I get is this:
Code: Could not update ICEauthority file /home/pontus/.ICEauthority And all I can click is a button that logs me out.
I've tried from the terminal to change owner and rights and I've even tried to delete the file, but I still get this dialog every time I log in.

I have avant-window-navigator in my startup appplications. This apparently causes gnome to use the Gnome icon theme on boot, instead of the Humanity theme I selected in Preferences->Appearance. I just have to go to Preferences-Appearance again to get the Humanity theme back to work (I don't even have to change any settings, just going there is enough.) When I remove awn from my startup applications, this problem doesn't occur.

I feel like this is a RTFM question, so if anyone wants to just direct me to the right manual, that's fine.
I just installed gnome-shell and i cant seem to find anyway to customize anything, esp. the task bar, the clock, et cetera
is there a preferences gui or something that I cant find? I feel like i'm trying to use a mac....
It seems pretty sweet, but, i dont know how to get used to not having a window list... i dont wanna pull up the "activities window" or alt tab every time i want switch windows (esp when my hand is used to just moving to the top of the screen and clicking on the right window...
There's this autohide taskbar at the bottom of the screen, but i cant for the life of me figure out what it's for, or how to put things on it....
