Ubuntu :: 11.04 Gnome Shell - Could Not Update ICEauthority File /home/user/.ICEauthority
May 1, 2011
I recently installed Ubuntu 11.04 with Unity as the default desktop environment, but I wanted Gnome 3 instead. So the installation of Gnome 3 and Gnome Shell went through, and I'm presented with a nice "gnomeish" gdm, but when I type my user password and try to log in all I get is this:
Code: Could not update ICEauthority file /home/pontus/.ICEauthority And all I can click is a button that logs me out.
I've tried from the terminal to change owner and rights and I've even tried to delete the file, but I still get this dialog every time I log in.

I have installed 9.10 on a Dell laptop internal drive. My problem is that I am getting the error:
Code:
Could not update ICEauthority file /home/holocene/.ICEauthority then after hitting enter I get:
Code:
There is a problem with the configuration server. (/usr/lib/libgconf2-4/gconf-sanity-check-2 exited with status 256)
How do I get this user and files functioning again?
What I did:
1. Installed ubuntu
2. got wireless/mail/other things working and used them for a couple days.
3. Decided my password was too short (insecure) and changed it. I used the GUI tool on the admin screen called Users, I think it is called.
4. restarted my laptop later, and got these messages.
I have googled extensively about this error, and it seems there is no good explanation as to how to get my user "holocene" back as a functioning user account. I have been able to setup another user using the recovery console but this is not a satisfying compromise.

3. Nautilus could not create the required folder "/home/username/Desktop".Before running Nautilus, please create the following folder, or set permissions such that Nautilus can create it.
Now every time when I restart my machine I've to follow this procedure...
1. I select my username and then login using xterm.

I am setting up a freeipa2 server (both fedora 15), and I was able to get the ipa-client-install to work perfectly (as far as I know) by yum excluding libcurl and curl. If I run kinit brad, I can authenticate and that works aswell.
But when I want to login as me through gdm, I get "Could not update ICEauthority file /home/brad/.ICEauthority" granted the home folders do not exist as this would be my first ever login.
I am currently replacing a windows computer lab to fedora, and have got eveything else ready to go.

1) I get this error message when I boot up :-
2) Then followed by : "There is a problem with the configuration server. (/usr/lib/libgconf2-4/gconf-sanity-check-2 exited with status-256)"
3) Then followed by : "Nautilus could not create the following required folders: /home/ian/Desktop, /home/ian/.nautilus. Before running Nautilus, please create these folders, or set permissions such that Nautilus can create them"
1. I have tried changing the permissions of the /home/ian/.ICEautority folder (as here) :-
Code:
sudo chown ian:ian /home/ian/.ICEauthority
sudo chmod 644 /home/ian/.ICEauthority
No luck. (Even tho this thread states it worked!)
2. As per this thread None of these worked :-

I created a separate /home partition after installing Karmic on a new computer using this HowTo :
[URL]
I copied all the files from /home/user using
find . -depth -print0 | sudo cpio --null --sparse -pvd /new/
On booting after the change, the new /home is correctly on a separate partition BUT during boot I get a message :
Could not update ICEauthority file /home/user/.ICEauthority
I checked and the ownership and permissions for /home/user/.ICEauthority are correct. The suggested remedy of deleting the file & waiting for it to be recreated doesn't work either. But when I compare other hidden files in the new /home/user directory, quite a few now have their ownership changed to root. & I am unable to connect to my external monitor because of a permission problem (probably connected).

I am using Ubuntu 9.10. I currently have two users myself and my wife. Yesterday morning when I tried to log in I receive the following messages:
"Could not update ICEauthority file /home/david/.ICEauthority"
then
"There is a problem with configuration server /usr/lib/libgonf2-4/gconf-sanity-check-2 with status 256"
and finally
"Nautilus could not create the following required folder /home/david/Desktop/.nautilius"
I searched the forum and followed some stuff about chmod 755 for the gconf file etc but still have the same problem. My wife can still log in with no problem by the way.

Can't log into my XFCE desktop like I normaly do. all the sudden I get notified that my xsession lasted less then 10 secondsLooking at the error I can see this:
Unable to access file /home/username/.iceauthority: No such file or directory
Using failsafe I can start a terminal. From terminal I tried to start X
Code: sudo startx Result: Running on desplay:0
So I tried to run this;
Code: sudo startxfce4 And I get up a graphical desktop.
So this is not a critical situation as I easily can use this method to log on, but as there has been something causing this I would like to be able to resolve this nonetheless. Btw it is not the old chmod trick in play here, cause my .iceauthority file is gone alltogheter.

I upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04 on my Toshiba 32-bit laptop without any problems.Since the upgrade I am starting to have troubles on this machine. Most others are 64-bit and bar an Evolution issue are fine.In this case, 24 hours after the upgrade the machine wanted to do an Update. It would not allow the update until I fixed some broken packages which I did via Synaptics Package Manager. I then Marked All Upgrades and did the update from there. It was fine until I shut down and tried to log in again.I got the Blue Screen of Death!!!!!! I thought only Windows had this!Anyway, I could not log in. The auto login was not working so I used Other which gave me Recovery, entered my UN and PW, and I got the error message:
HTML Code:
Could not update ICEauthority file
I have searched the forum and some other sites, but none of the ideas can I get to work. I can start the machine using a 9.10 CD in the trial mode, but can not download the files suggested or delete the ICEauthority file, etc...

I installed Fedora 11 and was trying to setup a Web server for pure LAMP development and wanted to port forward with router so that my webserver can be access from inter net.
Server installation was perfectly fine. I was able to login from the user which I created during the installation. Instead of auto get ip I assigned 192.168.1.100 and then I set a HTML Server port forward.
Where the problem started.
I wanted to configure few users on vsFTPd and I tell you truly there is no place on Google where some one has defined a descent way which any person can understand that we can add some users.
Somewhere I found that Linux normal users can also access ftp if the local_user directive is set YES which i did and I added 3 users.
I wanted that whenever user is connected by vsFTPd returned them /var/www/html directory. Where as vsFTPD was taking them to their home directory (respective to each user)
I was unable to find any way that I can configure vsFTPd to set one default directory path which take every user to www/html directory so that developers can deploy websites.
I notice Gnome GUI offers each user a home directory path so I though why not I gave every new user and existing user /var/www/html as their home directory
which i did... and this is how my Server stop responding to any further login attempts.
FTP is still working fine if I left it open It let the ftp client to connect but Linux server is not allowing login by any user
It gives an error 'Could not update ICEAuthority file /var/www/html//.ICEauthority'
And when i click close then next message is : 'There is problem with the configuration server (/usr/libexec/gconf-sanity-check-2 exited with status 256)'
Is there any way i can undo? Is there any way i can go directly to shell and remove those users and re-add some new users in the default way - I believe if I can add one new user with default directory /home/user I will be able to login
After this is resolve still I will need to search how we can add FTP users and take them to the directory /var/www/html

Today I tried to attach my digital turntable to the line-in of the computer and hoped for some sound to come. Unfortunately it didn't work. I switched the line-in feature on and put the volume on max. Still no results. I checked the same on Windows and this DOES work, so it can't be the hardware. Do I have to install some extra app in order to use the line-in in put? To complete the information: I'm using Squeeze 64-bits with Gnome. The turntable (Akai ATT05U) HAS worked before (that was when I used Ubuntu 32-bits on an Intel Celeron ). Another thing: since I tried to edit the sound settings, I get an error message at boot: "Could not update ICEautority file /var/lib/gdm3/.ICEauthority". Does this have anything to do with the audio matter?

note: acct and acct2 are not the actual account names. I spent a long time figuring out this ubuntu problem on my own and decided to share it with the ubuntu users out there. I will give a summary of what had happened and what I had done to resolve it. I did a lot of complicated account password changing as well. I wanted to get rid of the login keyring thing.
I had tried messing around with some of ubuntu's settings when I first installed 10.04 Lucid Lynx. I changed settings in: System>>Administration>>Users and Groups, and System>>Administration>>Login Screen. I got terrible results, but ended up solving it on my own. The first account I had was named "acct". I had an issue with the keyring always needing to be unlocked, meaning I had to type in a password twice. I did not like this. So I decided, why not delete this "acct" account and make a new one that I can use?
I made a second user account called "acct2". I messed around a lot with the settings, just to see what would happen and what would work. I tried to cut out some of the files that were in the other account, the account "acct", while I was in user account "acct2". I could not because I did not have the rights to do it.
I realized I had to change those files to shared. I logged back into the other account "acct", which was an administrator account. I made them all shared files. Next, I went back into acct2, then cut all the files out of acct that I needed, then I deleted the home folder for acct. This is probably where the problems all started. I always start with the purple screen and have no choice to log into my usable acct2 account and have to wait 7 minutes to get that option to do so. When I rebooted, the screen popped up a couple windows reporting errors to me:

Whenever I boot my fedora 12, even before asking me for my login name, etc., there comes a message saying "Can't update IECauthority file : /var/gdb/.IECauthority" and hangs at the place. Even the mouse doesn't move. If I were able to open the terminal somehow, perhaps by changing the file permissions, I could get something. Also, when I boot from ubuntu 9.10 and try seeing what's in the /var directory of fedora, it doesn't show anything, even if I display the hidden files. If the directory gdb doesn't exist, why is it showing the error ?

I'm configuring a classroom based on Linux (just Linux, without Windows) with user mobility. What I want is that any student will use its own 'username/password' on whatever computer getting its own data and without having to define every user on every computer. As far as Samba is very useful, even when I don't need Windows support I decided to base the solution on Samba. Right now I still have some problems and the solution doesn't work in my test environment. I defined a PDC (Samba 3.5 Domain Controller) on a Fedora 13 with 'homes', starting nmb and smb and it seems to work. On a Ubuntu 10.10 Workstation I built a Samba 'Domain Member Server' starting nmb, smb and winbind.
First question: should I define 'homes' on this server or not? I assumed 'not' as the 'homes' you have to use are the ones defined on the PDC, not on the DMS.
Second question: does winbind run just on DMS? Not on the PDC too?
I defined the DMS 'machine' and some domain users on the PDC and I could 'join' the DMS to the PDC without any problem (join rpc ...) From the workstation I can use smbclient seeing a domain with two servers, one of which is the controller. I can connect to the home shares using the domain users which are authorized by the PDC. On the DMS I paid attention on nsswitch.conf and pam file running 'pam-auth-update'. So 'webinfo -u' provides a list of users on the domain, local users and domain users. The problem arrives when I try to connect from the session login screen on the workstation to 'mydomainmyuser'. PDC validates the user, if the password is right, and I get connected but not to my PDC homes.
Instead I get some errors starting with:
'could not update ICEAuthoriy file /home/mydomain/myuser/.ICEAuthority'
It seems I'm in an empty space in an open but useless session which I can close later on.
Hereafter you will see the short smb.conf reported by testparm:
PDC
[global]
workgroup = TESO-DOM
server string = Samba Server Version %v
interfaces = lo, wlan0
bind interfaces only = Yes .....
