Ubuntu :: Removing A Word In A Multiple File Starting At The Dot Extension?

I would like to ask if someone knows a command or a script on how to rename a multiple file in the directory starting at the end of the filename or at the .extension( i would like to remove the last 11 character before the extension) for exampleBelow is the result of my command ls inside the directoryQuote:
BBC_In_footsteps_of_Alexander_the_mountain_20-v3veN2U__3I.mp4
BBC_In_the_footsteps_of_Alexander_Afghanistan_17-thAS28SWKKU.mp4

I have made the simple mistake of using dolphin to rename several picture files of types jpg and png. I have no problem viewing them and Ubuntu still knows which is which (if i view their properties it will state File Type: JPEG or PNG) but unfortunately Ubuntu Tweak does not allow you to chose them without the extension (I am trying to change my login background using this) So what i need is something that can scan several files, determine the file type, and add an appropriate extension to it. I have found several to do so for music files but none for images. I am using Ubuntu 11.04 at the moment.

How do you rename:
abc123.txt
abc124.txt
abc125.txt
to
abc.txt.123
abc.txt.124
abc.txt.125
Basically, I want to move the digits from the filename to after the extension.
It works for one file if I type:
rename 123.txt .txt.123 abc.txt.123
but I have thousands of files like these.

I have a problem with 'Starting File Manager' completeley filling my taskbar on startup.There could be 100 of them for all I know, as the taskbar ends up dividing into tiny slices for each.How do I find out what is causing this? Is there a log file I can check or some way to repair ubuntu off the Live CD?Recently installed some updates. A function by name abc is called in many files. I want to copy all the lines with the function call to an output file.A simple grep on function name doesn't help me as the function call is spanning across multiple lines as follows:
abc(parameter1,
parameter2,
parameter3);
So I want to copy all the three lines (till semicolon) to the output file.The problem is because there are more than 200 calls for the same function and I cannot do it manually

Since I do not like any of shell themes i downloaded, today I decided to remove user theme shell-extension.I removed it from the : Add/remove software, from menu.After logging out, and in, I keep getting : Gnome shell crashed, please log out.I have downloaded few shell themes from gnome look, and they all work.. But did not like them, always used default theme, so I decided to remove extension..
I removed "user theme" extension, but I did not delete "theme selector extension" from ~/.local/gnome-shell/ extensions.I just deleted it's folder from extensions, restarted, and I'm back in my Fedora.

how to run a command on all files with the same extension in a directory like this:

but in a simpler manner? I found this: Code: find . -type f -name *.dtx -exec tex {} ; but isn't there something simpler?

In a desperate attempt to overcome frequent crashing accompanied by XLog lines that suggest to me that Pulseaudio is the cause, I removed Pulsaudio from my Ubuntu 10.4(LTS) using Software Centre. Now I cannot start up Ubuntu but I can get to Terminal via the Recovery Mode. My question is how can I use Terminal to re-introduce Pulseaudio so that I may get back to where I was, albeit with the random crashes that I have had for many months?

I need to remove a lot of rpm packages and I would like to save some time and make things easier, but I am unsure of how to do it. Currently I just copy/paste over and over. My plan was to put the output of the command below into a text file, and use that text file to remove all the packages.
rpm -qa |grep xxxxx > file.txt
My question is how do I get that file to work with "rpm -e". I tried to insert the file using the less than symbol but that didn't work:
rpm -e --nodeps < file.txt

I've a webserver with a lot of documentary to serve. Some of the users have problems with the new microsoft documents like docx. Internet explorer 7 want to open the file like a zip-file not as word document. I've googelt around and found a solution that didn't work for me: [URL] I've added at /etc/mime.types

I want to write a script that launches a set of programs I need for such or such particular task. For example, I wrote this one:

But gnome-terminal will not start until I close filezilla, and gedit until I close gnome-terminal. How can I get the whole set to start up?

I have a considerable number of files in a subdirectory (some fascinating old military clips from archive.org - search on Big Picture if interested). Anyhow, I am downloading them using Internet Download Manager running in an XP virtual machine in VMWare on my Ubuntu 10.04 PC (due to the queuing, restart and speed capabilities of IDM). But I digress - the files are being saved on the host (Samba share) without a file extension. So I have a collection of files with names like

I wish to add the extension ".mp4" In Windows this is simply done with the command

This of course does not work in Linux. I have researched the Linux rename command and reviewed a lot of examples. However, I have not found a way to add an extension to a batch of files which are named with no extension to start with. The spaces in the file names also seem to present an issue. At the moment I am renaming them from the Windows VM while they are sitting on the Samba share using the ancient File Manager program from Windows NT which works great on XP. I have experimented with the file rename facility in Gnome Commander however, it does not seem to want to do something so simple.

Running Ubuntu Server 9.10.I have a couple of programs that I would like to start at boot, they will both run forever. I have created a cron job with @reboot and that will start a program, but if I have multiple programs in there it waits for the first to finish before starting the next.

I have to modify formsweb.cfg file in Oracle IAS.
Problem description
In formsweb.cfg file are two lines with labels archive_jini= and archive= at the beginning of line. After equal sign (=) is row of filenames of java archives delimited by coma(,). When I insert a new jar file in java directory, I have to append the very same name of jar file to both lines if that name is not yet present.

I installed Minecraft and I want to hide the .JAR extension on the file on my desktop. I tried just renaming it and deleting the ".jar" from the name, but when I tried opening it, it opened as an archive, rather than an executable, even though I had the "Allow executing file as program." box checked off. What can I do to hide the extension?

I have matlab installed on a network (I am not the administrator) and we usually start the program by typing "matlab", then choosing one of the version options from the menu i.e. typing "n". So because of this, trying to run matlab programs or commands directly like this... matlab -r ProgramName
...does not work. I just get the menu as usual and everything else is ignored. I assume the admin has overridden the matlab command with their own custom script. So my question is can I start a specific version of the program by specifying the folder that the version is in? I thought it might be something like /opt/matlab/version -r programname
this might look foolish, but I am a bit of a linux noob. Let me know if I should just ask my administrator but I thought there might be something easy I am missing.

When i try to open this file Openoffice opens up but then immediately freezes and when I click on quit it tells me openOffice is not responding. I just did an update and its still doing the same .

I have 2 Ubuntu machines up & running on a small network. Both are running SAMBA servers. One several years old & has a rather old version of Ubuntu. The other, quite new & has a version about 9 months old.The newest has a problem. When working with large & complex Word documents, it will periodically generate an an error on the work station.
"Word failed reading from this fille (xxx specifies file we are working on). Please restore the network connection or replace the floppy disk drive". The it crashes Word & unsaved work is lost.The error never occurs when using the old server, only the new.

Using the latest version of Ubuntu desktop on an emachine t5062 if it matters. I have a text file of keywords that is one-three words line after line for like 5000 lines. How would I go about adding a word to each line.Aside from typing it in or copying and pasting.If it can`t be done with Gedit I am all for using another program.
