I saw that there are 2 NTP services in /etc/init.d:
/etc/init.d/ntpd - the NTP daemon
/etc/init.d/ntpdate - what is this ? and what is the relation between the 2 services?
I mean... if there is ntpd to do all the clock sync, what is ntpdate's role?
i like to ask something regarding network time protocol.... if i use "ntpdate [URL]"..it shows the time synchronized with [URL]. but if i want to reset my time should i use 'ntpdate' only or another command?

I'm trying to sync the clock of an ubuntu desktop with the network with ntpdate -u <ntp-server> and in a matter or minutes it's growing an offset of a few hundred milliseconds and even more than one second. Is there anyway to guarantee that the time keeps synchronizing with the network more frequently? does it make sense that the offset grows so fast? Am I doing something wrong?

I have a strange problem for internet. My clients (winxp - S2) can't get internet.Let me explain my scenerios. Fedora 10 with lan (eth0) having direct internet from dsl model, client (XP service pack 2) can use samba shares using dhcp (wlan0) installed in Fedora 10 box. client can ping my linux box.Now problem is: client (dosbox) can ping the google ip address (i.e ping 74.125.39.106) but can't use 'ping www.google.com'. That means ping with ip works for internet from my client. My linux box can. I can use internet from FC10 but can't use iexplorer from my client to have internet. I have enable ipmasquarding in Firewall and dhcpd is running on wlan0 for dynamic ip address of my clients. Can someone suggest me what kind of problem having I? What should i do to success iexplorer for internet? what possibly am i missing?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently moved into my room-mates house and her wireless was not secure as I was able to log on to it unsecured with my Fedora 12 Laptop. After Securing it with WPA all the windows computers had no problem getting back on to the now secure wireless. Using GNOME I went to SYSTEM then PREFERENCES and NETWORK CONNECTIONS and clicked on the wireless tab and configured wireless security tab and configured for WPA WPA2 Personal. No problems. But when I go to the gnome tool bar and click on the network and see our SSID it wants to use WEP 40bit and others methods but has no selection for WPA.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have Fedora 10 installed. I've just made an update of my system. Things that were updated were a new kernel version with devel and also something with NVIDIA (which is my video card).
After restart of my system, compiz fusion no longer works.
I have a NVIDIA-Linux-x86-177.82-pkg1.run -file to manually install the NVIDIA-driver so the advanced features of Compiz can be utilized.
After install, the bootup screen tells me that loading the NVIDIA driver has failed. I also receive a WARNING-message.
I have set this up before (ie installed the drivers and had them working perfectly) but had to do a system wide re-install of fedora. Since this clean install, I've had non-stop grief with nVidia drivers. They have been downloaded and installed via yum, and on start-up nvidia.ko loads. But from with gnome I cant gain access to any 'special effects' (ie desktop effects wont enable).
View 4 Replies View RelatedAfter running my computer for a while, my volume control always messes up. I wonder if it is some app. Mute, raise, lower volume all fail, and so does the little volume icon in my notification area. When the computer boots up things are fine. I can do some more testing later to try and pinpoint the source but I need to wait a few hours for a download to finish. I can still use Advanced Volume Control and all the options there work.

Selecting any LV on the UI reveals the correct properties, except the mount point. And, I am able to - create new LV, delete LVs.I am not able to - change anything on a mounted LV (which the GUI shows as Unmounted). Getting the error message- "Logical volume is not mounted but is in use. Please close all applications using this device (eg iscsi)". My expectation is that the UI prompts the user to umount the LV or unmounts it automatically.

I have ssh running on port 443 ( a wifi I use blocks anything but 80 and 443 for some reason,) and open up a tunnel port 3128 (squid) and send my firefox traffic through it. I have a couple friends I have setup for the same thing.
I am highly paranoid, and only allow authentication with a keypair. I've been using this setup on fedora 8, gentoo, fedora 11, and now fedora 12. I have used the same keys, copying them when I reinstall. I just reinstalled fedora 12 again (I had the same keys working on 12, I reinstalled to put in a bigger hard drive.) My keys work (I have one for putty on windows, and one for my linux desktop / laptop, both keys work fine.) I didn't need to change anything to get them working. However, my 2 friend's keys don't work. They get denied. The error message displayed is "Permission denied (publickey)."
the /var/log/secure error is

it turns out its wireless card is detected as a USB device (lsusb output: "Compaq Computer Corp. Wireless LAN MultiPort W200"). If you google for help with this, you'll see references to MUCH older versions that are out there (some for a 2.4 kernel) as well as a message implying that the driver is now available in the kernel (the USB one isn't). I wanted to share this how-to to assist anyone else who had the same hurdles I did. Unfortunately, you will have to compile your own kernel module, and the module relies upon firmware that must be first downloaded from the card itself. Here are the steps I took:
1. yum install kernel-devel make libgomp binutils kernel-headers glibc-headers glibc-devel gcc perl-URI subversion patch wget
2. Obtain and patch the latest version of the orinoco_usb driver: - cd /tmp - svn co https://orinoco.svn.sourceforge.net/...o/branches/usb
This places the latest code into a subdirectory called "usb"
- wget -O orinoco_usb-2.6.27.patch "http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/attachment.php?list_name=orinoco-devel&message_id=48F7883C.4010109%40gmail.com&coun ter=1"
[Code]...
5. That should do it - you ought to be able to enable and disable your card (on this Compaq laptop, there's a button on the top), then NetworkManager will see it and away you go. Be warned that this driver has not historically been well maintained, so it currently doesn't support WPA encryption of any sort.
I hope to make an RPM of this someday to make this even easier for users, depending on the interest.
Automount works for CD but not usb.
In earlier versions, of RedHat, plugging a USB thumb drive which works on windows
would at least produce a message with the address /dev/Something? but this release does not.
How can I determine the hardware address so I can at least manually mount the device if in in /var/log/messages ?
I have tried different thumbdrives and a palm drive trying to get a reaction?
I tried doing nfs mount and it doesnt work for me. The following is the output of my "showmount -e <IP>"

View 3 Replies View RelatedI resently installed Fedora 11 x86_64 on my Thinkpad T61 laptop. After the installation it updated 415 packages. The problem is that after the update the graphical interface for the packages manager no longer works (i come from Debian so i`m not sure exactly how it is called). Of course i can still use yum (and i probably would use it anyway because i`m used to using apt from the command line) but i don`t like to have something broken on my system. So does anyone have an idea what might be causing the problem? The graphical interface for the packages manager starts and i can search for packages and it shows the results bu as soon as i mark something for instalation and start the installation it hangs up and the window soon turns grey and unresponsive. I`ve tried waiting for some time but nothing seems to happen.

I just installed Fedora 11 on my PC and can't seem to get the Win key to work at all I tried putting entries in xmodmap, tried modifying xorg.conf, and also tried setting altwin:super_win in the config settings. But nothing seems to work. Somehow, my Win key seems to be working as Meta instead of Super. From emacs, if I press Win+x, it works like Meta+x.
