i like to ask something regarding network time protocol.... if i use "ntpdate [URL]"..it shows the time synchronized with [URL]. but if i want to reset my time should i use 'ntpdate' only or another command?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to sync the clock of an ubuntu desktop with the network with ntpdate -u <ntp-server> and in a matter or minutes it's growing an offset of a few hundred milliseconds and even more than one second. Is there anyway to guarantee that the time keeps synchronizing with the network more frequently? does it make sense that the offset grows so fast? Am I doing something wrong?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been doing some security testing in a lab environment that does not have direct internet access. It's actually a little complicated: From home to connect to my lab machine, I
1. SSH to machineA.
2. SSH from machineA to machineB
where machineB is my actual lab machine. neither machineA or machineB allow anything other than SSH, and machineB is only accessible from machineA. However, I really need to run yum on machineB. I have managed to get internet access via Firefox on machineB by creating a series of SOCKS proxy via SSH.
1. machineB: ssh -L 12345:localhost:12345 user@machineA
2. machineA: ssh -D 12345 user@machineC
3. machineB: configure firefox to use socks proxy, localhost, 12345
where machineC has internet without limits placed. This is the only way I have managed to get internet working. I tried using ssh -L all the way from machineB->machineA->machineC but it didn't work (even when setting Firefox to use http proxy). I tried using ssh -D all the way, but again that doesn't work either.
I do have access via Firefox using socks proxy. However, yum update fails to retrieve mirror list, and from what I have found I don't believe yum supports socks proxy directly. Instead, it uses http_proxy / ftp_proxy. how to get yum to go out over the SOCKS proxy I created (same one using in Firefox)? It seems like since Firefox can access the internet and everything without issues, i should be able to get yum to tunnel through the same connection to access everything.... I tried

is there a way to force wget to use a specific squid proxy when making connections ? - I use a squid proxy normally, but I need this specific request to go via a different one. I dont have to use wget, I just need a way to test squid's blocking rules by requesting various pages through it, this proxy is not my normally proxy on the network and so I cant rely on wget taking the environment variable.
Also, this is as part of a script, so anything that avoids editing wget config files would be best. - Perhaps curl can do this ? - currently im using the exit code of wget to determine if the connection was made.
I saw that there are 2 NTP services in /etc/init.d:
/etc/init.d/ntpd - the NTP daemon
/etc/init.d/ntpdate - what is this ? and what is the relation between the 2 services?
I mean... if there is ntpd to do all the clock sync, what is ntpdate's role?
I use CentOS release 5.3 (Final)I want centos to automaticaly run ntpdate each time the pc boots, how can I do that ?(I do not boot to KDE, just to plain konsole if that matters)

I have RHEL 5 joined to windows Domain and lately has been delaying in time like 20 - 30 mins off the domain controller. Any ideas why? It suddenly started this delays. I have to login and restart ntpd in order to sync and so users can login. Here is the output of ntpq -p:

I wonder is the * means that its syncing with itself? if yes how to make it to sync with my remote server dc1 (2nd line?)
I'm trying to synchronize a client with an ntpdate server. The ntp.conf file from the server has the following lines: # /etc/ntp.conf, configuration for ntpd; see ntp.conf(5) for
driftfile /var/lib/ntp/ntp.drift

View 3 Replies View Relatedinstall the linux-vdso.so in my ubuntu 9.04 64bits. I need it because multiple applications that I have programmed need it due to an inclusion of a 3rd party software. As I have seen this library is only available to fedora suse and other rpm OS. Should I install in my ubuntu machine? and how? I already tried to use the getlibs and tried to downloaded it but I didn't find it anywhere.
View 2 Replies View RelatedThe problem i have is that after sucessfully installing Ubuntu 10.04 (64bits) when i start my PC and i get to grub2 and select Ubuntu it will get stuck at a blank screen with only an "_" flickering on the top of the screen. At first i thought "Hey, maybe it just takes a while to boot" but after letting it sit there for about 20 minutes and nothing happening i decided to restart my PC. And then the same thing happened like 5 times. BUT on the 6th try it booted sucessfully! And everything was working perfectly but as soon as i restarted my PC i would encounter the same problem.
Details I should probably mention that i had the exact same problen on the install process. I tried with a CD i had burned the image on and it would show me install options (Try and install, install, etc.) But when i selected either one of those i would get the "_" flickering and nothing ever happening. Then i tried it with a DVD thinking that the CD was the issue. Same thing. After that i tried with a USB drive and i would get the same exact problem, but on the retry on the USB drive the planets aligned in such a way that i actually got the Virtual Ubuntu loaded from my USB drive.
So it installed sucessfully and when i restarted it i got to GRUB and selected Linux and the "_" would start showing and nothing ever happens. On the <random number> of restarts it actually launched and it picked up my audio, video cards, other NTFS drives, etc. But when i restarted i would get the problem again. I even went trough the whole install process AGAIN (getting it to read from the USB flash drive, starting on Ubuntu) and still no consistent results. Though on the second install it didn't pick up my audio hardware nor my other NTFS drives until the second restart where i was able to use Ubuntu normally. I even upgraded what it told me to upgrade. (now i have two "different" versions of ubuntu on grub, each with it's own safe mode only different by a .24 and a .25 on their names) and right after upgrading and restarting it booted immediately. But after that i'm getting the same issue over and over again.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have two computers running Kubuntu 9.10 (using the upgrade paths from 8.04 and so on) one running 32bit and the other running 64 bit and I have the following problem: On the 32bit version installing the repository package for Digikam, everything works just fine. On the 64bit version I have two problems:
First digikam won't start due to the following error:
digikam: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/kde4/digikamimageplugin_freerotation.so:
undefined symbol: _ZN7Digikam11ImagePlugin17setActionCategoryERK7QSt ring
I'll have to delete all digikamplugin files from /usr/lib/kde4 and then it works from the command line. It appears that everything is working as it should.Second, starting digikam from Lancelot does nothing.
I've just migrated to Fedora after 2 years of Ubuntu, and I'm rather happy with it, except for one problem left. When I launch a windows program through wine (I've only tried games yet), it won't go fullscreen. I tried everything I fond on the internet: disabling compiz, enabling/disabling virtual desktop, but no matter what, my game is still on a tiny window. I tried switching my resolution to the one of the game, it doesn't change anything. And pressing alt+Enter doesn't change anything either, except sometimes crashing the game. The 32 bits libraries for xorg-nvidia are installed, and I don't see what could cause this problem.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm looking for a UPS for my computer setup. This one looks interesting:CyberPower CP800AVR 800VA 450W. The docs say: 'HID compliant USB port enables full integration with built-in power management and auto shutdown features of Windows, Linux and Mac OS X' Unfortunately I don't really know what that means? Will it work with OpenSUSE? My machine is not very power hungry buts its not light-weight. It's a quad-core system with 5 SATA disks, 2 burners, a 30" display plus some smaller accessories. It takes about 2-3 mins to shutdown due to all the services I have running on it, so to be safe I need a little margin of shutdown time from there.
Anyone used this UPS? or something similar? APC and Cyberpower are generally easy to get and have models which I can afford.
Actually, it's recommended to compile (and build) wine 32bits. But, it's possible to build Wine in 64bits and 32bits with the same sources. The solution is explain in this page : [url]Building a shared WoW64 setup.
With this solution, if Wine 64bits is installed on your system, you can create a 32bits wineprefix by this command :
To use this command, you must to compile and make wine twice in 2 differents folder, like explain :
How to compile and make twice without problem in the "rules" files in the debian folder when i want to build a package?
Im about to get some support from Novell using Bomgar. Bomgar support SUSE, Ubuntu, Redhat, Fedore, but i can't find anything about OpenSUSE.
Anyone know if Bomgar work on OS11.3 64bits?

I have an old Lenovo PC on which I have Debian 8.3 64bit with no desktop environment. It has an onboard Marvell 88E8056 NIC that SHOULD be able to run at 1Gb/s but the driver (SKY2) that is loaded will only do 100Mb/s.
So I try to get this thing to work with a new driver.
For that it seems I have to download it from here: [URL] ....
There I download Linux_v10.93.3.3.tar.zip which has directions on how to compile and install the SK98LIN driver.
Since I never done that before, I found this on youtube : [URL] ....
But where for him it does compile, for me it breaks off with saying missing version.h :
