I just upgraded to Fedora 12 and I am now having some sound issues. On Fedora 11 if I set my volume below about 45% I couldn't hear anything. However 45% gave me a comfortable listening level. Now if I set my volume below about 20% I cannot hear anything, however 20% is very loud. And by loud I mean approximately equivalent to 80% under Fedora 11.
View 9 RepliesMy volume control seems to have only three settings: TOO LOUD, VERY QUIET, OFF. If I adjust the Master volume slider from the Panel, only about the right 1/8th has any effect and if I slide it past about the 95% mark, I get no sound at all. At the far-right end of the volume control, I get total volume. It's basically like the slider only has any impact in the top 5% of it's space. Below 95% of the slide, there is zero volume.
It's so drastic, that one tap down of the volume button on my keyboard kills the sound (because it nudges the slider past that 95% mark). This happens in the Audio settings, etc., system-wide. If I adjust the volume for an individual app from within the app (MPlayer, for example) it behaves exactly as expected (that is, app volume works smoothly, it's just master volume that has this issue). I have run through most of the "obvious" things-- I'm wondering if I broke something by installing the extra KDE packages to get Amarok to work.
Whenever I play streaming videos, (mpg, wmv, etc), the volume will move from where it's set to maximum level. Then I have to adjust the sound. If I play another streaming video it will do it again. I'm using F11 with Gnome. How to stop it from happening? No matter how I adjust player's volume, it starts off at maximum level. This is my sound info I'm using:

I just did an upgrade from F12 64bit to F13 64bit and sound causes problem, It does work, but even when I set everything to max, the sound level is still way too low. I checked pulseaudio volume control, sound preferences etc, everything seems to be normal.

How-To set the mixer volume level at system startup or login. A funny story that led up to this how-to first...
I made the obvious mistake of leaving my volume level set to nearly maximum. Of course, Ubuntu's default behavior is to restore the mixer to its last known state - a point of much irritation at that moment. This had been a problem in the past as well, and today was the last straw. So, I did some research, for quite some time I might add, and decided to be a good community member and share my findings. It seems that there are all sorts of opinions around the web. The dominant opinion is that a mixer should always be restored to its last known state, that this is all well and good, and why would you ever want it to work any other way. Lots of people suggested that the startup sound be disabled, which was not a terrible solution, but was still a work-around as it means that the next sound bite to be played is the alarming one.
Needless to say, I wanted to find out what I would call the "proper" way to set the mixer level at startup. As my laptop uses PulseAudio, and my office desktop uses ALSA audio, the methods were different. My focus was for PulseAudio as that was the original purpose. I note here that my method for ALSA is less detailed as it is not the default for Ubuntu audio these days. So, if you are using ALSA, you might have to be a little creative to make my ALSA note fit your needs. I have attached 2 files to this post, one for ALSA and one for PulseAudio.

It works somewhat, but only increasing volume. Xev does a strange job detecting the key codes, and assigning keyboard short cuts does the same thing. View 3 Replies View RelatedI am concerned about my tweeters in relation to signal coming from the computer. I have machine LINE OUT fed into my preamplifier (hardware audio component) all the time. The max levels of tuner, tape recorder, turntable, etcetera are all "equalized". That is, they all more or less deliver the same output level to the preamp. The difference between a CDDA level and that of another one is always minimal. The same goes for vinyls (not "so minimal"). As to radio broadcasts, one may be xmiting with great power and make differences larger, but still no harm for the tweeters, relatively speaking. Mine are 50w four-way loudspeaker systems (forgive the word, I used to call them baffles).
The power amplifier is 30w per channel so, theoretically, it cannot damage the speakers. But the preamp (Yamaha C-2) can deliver a very large signal. When this signal is unduly large, the woofer and mid-range speakers won't suffer. But the enormous resultant distortion can damage the tweeters. Some audio files have the signal recorded at very high levels. And I could launch aplayer, play or mplayer, or any GUI player, or I could receive an email audible notification when amixer's output controls are near the top and put my tweeters in danger. I think the core of the problem is the huge variation in level between different audio files.
I have an Echo Mia soundcard that I had working in Ubuntu 9.04 fine but just upgraded today to 10.04. I got the card working fine with the Medibuntu respository Alsa Firmware. However, every time I boot up the volume is insanely loud (I use studio monitors with a set volume). As soon as I click to change the volume it suddenly kicks in down to the correctly set volume but I need it to not boot at max. I remember I had to do something in 9.04 to resolve this and had the Echo Mixer in the panel as a launcher but I can't remember what I did to get it to initialize the volume correctly. I've tried everything I could think of to no avail.
Anyone have any ideas? Even if I could just use a script to set the volume to initialize to a specific level I'd be fine with raising it after.

For these programs, ssh without password prompt in console is required. So far, I did the method described here: [URL]... with keys distributed at each node. However, imagine a new users needs to be created:
1. Creating user at every node.
2. Create key at every node
3. Distribute key to every node
Makes password prompt threetimes, for 50 nodes - quite a lot. The students dont like that really much, me neither. What I am asking for is any help to make this more comfortable. When the user first logs in to a machine, the home directory should be created. I think I can manage it to work.

I've just upgraded from F9 to F10. I can boot okay but I seem to have lost some data in one of my logical volumes. My drive is organised as follows:

here is my scenario:
I am running F10 x86_64 with Nvidia Quadro FX 3400.
I installed the drivers and it worked just fine. No errors generated according to Nvidia log files.
However, while in run level 5 when I try to switch to run level 3 by typing "telinit 3" or "init 3" the X server goes down and I get a blank screen. Same thing happens when I try to switch to a different tty session by <ctrl>+<alt>+F2 (or any F key for that matter).
I also noticed that when I shut down my system I can't see any more the screen where services are shutting down and their status ([OK] or [failed]).
Would appreciate your help on solving this issue.
I've been running Fedora Core 3 on a P4 450 as a personal Samba server and domain controller. It's worked so well that I never gave any thought to upgrading. The other night, I noticed that Up To Date wasn't working, and that Firefox was acting strangely. I made the FC 13 installation disks, whereupon I found out that the system didn't have enough memory.
Rather than mess with the P3 450 any more, instead I swapped main boards and decided to do an upgrade. it even possible to do an "upgrade" from 3 to 13? Is it possible to maintain my existing partitions/settings. I've backed up everything that I'd be too unhappy to lose. It's a two drive system and the second is nothing but data, none of it catastrophic to lose, but at least disappointing. I'd like to keep the data and settings on the primary disk, but won't cry if I can't.
I have a keyboard with media buttons on it which work fine. I do have a question about the 2 buttons for lower and higher volume. Pressing the higher volume button increases the volume with a maximum of 18 steps, where step 0 = mute and step 17 is maximum. I wonder if it is possible to increase the number of steps to make the volume change not so big per step. Now I have one step which is a bit too loud, and one step lower is not loud enough.
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen i installed Ubuntu, everything worked fine, sound drivers installed automatically and volume was perfect.Then one day as I was talking to a friend on skype, I tried changing the output to speakers from my headset during the call and i didnt get any output. I tried changing a few settings, can't remember which ones exactly until I noticed someone had pulled the audio cable from the back of my PC. I replaced it but I started getting very very low sound.I found out about alsamixer and when I ran it, I found that the volume on that device was turned down, i turned it up and voila! sound back to normal.However, now when I reboot, my sound goes down again. I have tried deleting the asound.state file and running the save command, "sudo alsactl store 0" I think, as someone suggested, but no cigar.

I have a Logitech clearchat pro usb headset and it works really well. However every time I plug it in I have to turn up its volume in alsa mixer. Also so that the right volume slider is controlled (by the volume keys) I have to change the output in pavucontrol. Does anyone know of a way that I can make this happen on its own? I guessed writing a udev rule might work (not that I have ever done one), but I don't know the commands that are equivalent to what I do.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have 5.1-speaker set, confed succesfully with alsa. alsamixer -c 0 -command shows volume of all the speakers I want to set up. My problem is, when I have alsamixer open and change main volume from gnome-panel (it's called pavucontrol for me, pulseaudio?) it "resets" all speakers to max (100%). Only master volume changes like planned. For example, if I have front speakers set to 50%, center to 75%, surround to 100%, subwoofer to 40%, when changing volume from gnome's panel it only changes master volume, and puts every other speaker to max. How to prevent this? Do you have any clue? I had not any problems with this in openSUSE 11.1. Alt+F2 not working with Emerald decorator Screens go black after 10 minutes or so in openSUSE 11.2

I tried to playing with volume settings but to no avail.I recording something with arecord -f cd test.wavand tried playing it back with aplay test.wavbut got nothing.Then I thought I'd look at my sound card configuration. I selected the "Configure your sound card" from the start menu. And to my astonishment no card has been configured (I was surprised because I am able to hear sounds, play music, etc.).Anyway, I tried configuring my card. I've just upgraded to 11.04 and I created a evolution-backup.tar.gz file as I've done in other upgrades. When I restored the backup and started Evolution, I've lost all the emails in top-level folders (Inbox, Sent, Drafts etc). My own custom folders within these top level folders contain the emails that I backed up. There are quite a few important emails that I've yet to respond to in my Inbox and this is very concerning. Also, I've lost all my Contacts!

To use my microphone I found out that I have to change my microphone settings because it's mono and the default setting is thinking it's stereo: With the Volume Controller I setup one chancel to 5 and the other to 90 and the mic is working fine. Starting Skype and using it I see that the setting is reducing the volume for the mic below 20, so nobody can hear me. I tried closing first Volume Controller and then starting Skype, no matter the volume of the mic is reduced. How do I stop this behavior?

However, I would like to be able to hear it all the time. I don't want to have to record to be able to hear it. Is there a way to mix the line input sound with the normal system sounds? This is so I can run sound from my Xbox 360 into my computer. I currently use a audio splitter but I get problems with volume levels due to voltage changes going to the speakers.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI don't know much about lvm and I've managed to screw up a drive. I had a 500GB drive with FC14 on it and I wanted to copy over a load of data to my new 1TB that was replacing it. I set up my new install the same way as the old...including the same volume names (error number 1 I think) I successfully mounted the old/500GB drive (using vgscan and vgchange -a y etc.) using a laptop (running FC13) and an external hdd cradle. I could access the files I wanted but this wasn't the machine I wanted to copy them to (I was doing this while waiting for the install to finish on the new drive).
When I tried the same process on the new install I found that having two lvm with the same name meant I couldn't mount the external one. So I opened the disk utility (palimsest) and was going to change the name of the old volume group but it wouldn't let me do that. I then thought maybe I could get away with just changing the name of the partition where the files were and maybe I could add it to the mounted group or something so I changed it to lv_home2. This changed the name of my new/1TB lv_home to lv_home2 as well. So thinking that wasn't the answer I just changed the name of the new lv_home2 back to lv_home.
From that point on I haven't been able to see the old drives partitions (the new volume group still works so far). I has a physical volume but the volume group and volume names are gone from view. When I try to vgscan on my main computer or the laptop I had it working on earlier I get:

I am trying to get my own email server set up, and so far its been going pretty smooth, The only thing that is not working right now is receiving emails. I can send email just fine, and when they are sent they are even sent from the proper addresses, but when I try to send an email to my domain, it does not go through.
I have the port forwards set up on my router to send all traffic on port 25 over to my mail server, I can telnet to the smtp server from the localhost just fine, but when I try to telnet from another computer on my network it gives me this message

Apparently openSUSE figures that we have multiple users logging into the gui desktop, so the gui is always kept running and a login window with the desktop manager option forces the user to login in. With autologin, this never happens, but no choice of desktop is possible on the fly.
Can some type of script be set up to painlessly enable this to happen? And what is the best way of bringing either the Gnome or KDE desktop manager down gracefully? I do get lots of error messages as the system attempts to recover and X shuts down. It appears that apparently the single user with autologin is left out in the cold.
