Jul 12, 2011
I've setup an NFS share on my Fedora 15 host of which Google'ing told me that it had changed radically from the old NFSv3 config. Ie. no more /etc/hosts.allow or /etc/hosts.deny files.....My current setup is this..../etc/sysconfig/nfs:
Code:
#
# Define which protocol versions mountd

I have a file that was created in Virtual Machine Manager and I need to get it out of the virtual operating system(windowsXP). Writing to a USB would be ideal but that hasn't been working since I upgraded to Fedora12.Is there anyway I can mount the image to retrieve the file?wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/loop0, missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so mounting as fvat doesn't work either.

I use F10 at home and while away from work on my laptop. Recently I could get the VPN sorted out ( I can now connect to the vpn (ppp0) server at work from home or anywhere else). I am trying to mount a windows folder that is on the work server on my F10 box at home through the VPN connection that is first established. What I know about the windws server
servername
sharename
username
password
When I try this
sudo mount -t cifs //pxxxx/home/abcd /mnt/dir/ -o username=abcd,password=xxxx
I get this error
mount error: could not resolve address for pxxxx: Name or service not known
No ip address specified and hostname not found
I think the VPN connection is established successfully. I have a ppp0 connection under ifconfig with an IP address after vpn connection is established. In windows I just map the network drive (\pxxxxhome) username=abcd, password=xxxx and mount the folder as "abcd on pxxxxhome"

I have nfs-server installed and running on my Ubuntu 10.04 server. I have some directories exported. I can connect from my Ubuntu 10.04 PC using the commands:
sudo mount taylor10:/data0 /t10/data0
sudo mount taylor10:/data1 /t10/data1
sudo mount taylor10:/data2 /t10/data2
sudo mount taylor10:/data3 /t10/data3
However, when I have my firewall on the PC enabled (Firstarter) I cannot make the mounts. I have ports 111 and 2049 open. If I stop the firewall, do the mounts and then start the firewall I am still mounted to the nfs shares. The connection is on port 2049. I have observed that when the firewall is enabled and I issue the mount command I get traffic on a random port such as 46694, 37022, etc. I have found instructions regarding editing /etc/default/nfs-common but they seem to control the port the server is listening on, not the port which the client is asking on. How do I lock down the port which mount and/or the nfs client is using to talk to the server to make the initial contact.

My network has several machines on it. They are all connected to a single router. Two of the machines are running Windows Vista, one Windows XP and one Fedora 11. When I go to places.network, I see an icon that says Windows Network. If I click on it, I get the message: Unable to mount location, Failed to retrieve share list from server. When I had Ubuntu running on this machine, I had no problem seeing and connecting to the Windows Vista machine.

Both server (web01), in DMZ, and client (app01), intranet, are Linux OEL5.5.
A few hints follows:
1- I ssh to web01, in DMZ, from a intranet machine on my desktop, export my DISPLAY, and try to bring up xclock; nothing happens.
2- traceroute from web01 to app01 fails.
3- NFS mount from web01, nfs server, to nfs client, app01, fails.
How should my network configuration on web01 or app01 be to make this NFS mount from web01 to app01 work? Each server has 4 NICs, I've only used eth0.

After making several attempt I cannot mount share on client. What I am missing here? OR is there problem with F11 with NFS server? While throwing everything including sink... I ran tcpdump on server while issuing mount command from client; I got following tcp dump.
01:14:57.142977 IP eagle.xxxxx.co.uk.38684 > tomcat.xxxx.co.uk.sunrpc: S 593790635:593790635(0) win 5840 <mss 1460,sackOK,timestamp 38407834 0,nop,wscale 6>

01:15:02.142431 arp reply eagle.xxxxx.co.uk is-at 00:10:a7:04:d0:0d (oui Unknown)
Which reflect that client (computer - eagle) trying to make call on Server - tomcat but failing. We have a router which also server DHCP Server and issue IP but server has static IPs.

Client unable to listen to NIS domain server.I have configured an NIS server, which is working fine.I then configured an NIS client to share some like passwd, shadow, etc.By default the client was trying to communicate to the NIS server using the broadcast method..However if I restart the client computer, it fails to communicate or Listen to the domain server. Once I login to the pc, I then check the /etc/yp.conf file and it switched back to the broadcast method. Is there any way that I can make this entry: domain naman.com server station51.naman.com permanent so that even after the reboot it should communicate using the client-server connection rather than the broadcast connection.

The image was created using:
How would I, if it is possible, mount /dev/sda1 from the image so that I'm able to read the contents?
It's not an option to clone the HDD again, I know how to do it if I had only cloned the single partition by itself. I hope it's still possible with the current image.

I just created a LUKS filesystem following these instructions. Everything seemed okay at first. It mounted with no problem and I moved some files there. I then unmounted it and remounted it to see if I would need to use a special command. It mounted right away and even allowed access to normal users. So, I rebooted to see if anything would change. Before I go on I should say that my partitioning scheme is weird. Not knowing any better I 'upgraded' to 11.04 when my update manager told me a new version was out. This didn't go well and I had to do a fresh install to put 10.10 back on my machine. After this the way it partitions the drive has been weird. What I had was /dev/sda1 which has my installation on it including /home. But, where it gets weird is /dev/sda2 would not manually mount. Looking at the disk in gparted it showed /dev/sda2 THEN under that, as if they were sub partitions or something, I had sda6 and sda7. I had been using 6 and 7 for various things and they mounted fine, so I decided to encrypt 7. After reboot I only have sda1. Everything else shows up as unallocated and ever way I try to mount I get device does not exist.
I only did the procedure for sda7 but 6 has been affected as well. There is no longer a sda2 the way there was before. This always bothered me anyway since I wanted sda2 for my /home but it wanted to call it sda6 and put it under sda2 like I said, I could never fix that, now this.

I've began to work on getting my access control, set up properly on my server, and want to create a "my documents" folder for each user I add. I do not want it being part of the home directory and have read everything and still can't seem to get it to work. I've got a second drive that is mounted at /private on my server, with a folder that is underlying on it call users and groups. Then from there is has the exact unix username that I set up in Users and Groups. Ex. /private/user/gary . With Samba, I added the following code:
Code:
[My Documents]
guest ok = no
comment = %u's Documents
[code]....
I've tried using %u,%U,%S, and the normal username and of all of them, it will only work with the username. I've even used force user. added root to the valid users list and it still gives me access denied or the multiple connections to a single share with multiple user names prohibited but nothing is mounted on this share. On Webmin, it doesn't show any connections to the share. I'm rather at a stumped state in which is frustrating me, because I want to have this so when I go from my desktop to my laptop I have "My Documents" On either unit. Security on the server is set to User because I've searched to see if I can't find a way to make shares visible by a guest but read only to them and when I access them from my log in to make it read write using the "Share" option.

I have a Thecus NAS with nfs support running. Now I switched from OpenSUSE 10 to 11.2 on the client side and aren't able to mount my nfs shares. With SuSe 10.0 I didn't have any problems.
The /etc/exports:
/raid/home_nas1 192.168.0.24/31(rw,no_root_squash,sync,anonuid=99,anongid=99,no_subtree_check)
/raid/soundandmore 192.168.0.24/31(rw,no_root_squash,sync,anonuid=99,anongid=99,no_subtree_check)
On the client side I'm able to see the shares:
showmount -e nas1
Export list for nas1:
/raid/home_nas1 192.168.0.24/31
/raid/soundandmore 192.168.0.24/31
The client address:
inet addr:192.168.0.27
I'm using nfs-3:

I am trying to mount a shared drive on a Windows Server 2008 machine using a Linux machine (Fedora 13). I try mounting by
# mount //HOSTNAME/SHARENAME /mnt/FOLDER
and I get mount error(13): Permission denied.
I have tried other options like # mount -t nfs //HOSTNAME/SHARENAME /mnt/FOLDER -o username=USERNAME and the same thing with different filesystem types (ntfs, smbfs, cifs).
I have:
checked all firewall configurations.
verified security/sharing settings
for the drive
verified registry keys under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesNfsSvrParameters
verified NFS server is running
I am familiar with Windows Server 2008 but I have never configured a system from scratch on my own. The computer I'm using used to have Windows 7 for sharing folders to a Linux server. I have just switched to Server 2008 and have not been able to mount anymore.
One thing that I think is that I tried setting up an identity mapping solution; however, I do not have a domain controller setup. I am still functioning on a workgroup.

I have configured the remote installation of Fedora 13 with kickstart with nfs installation method. All work ok until I boot the Fedora 13 client system.
Fed13 client system receives the IP address from dhcp, receives the loader, loads vmlinuz and initrd.img from tftp, load anaconda, configures the network and dev eth0, mounts nfs server to load kickstart file, loads kickstart file (language...) but when it tries to mount nfs server to install from Fedora 13 installation tree it fails.
First, I thought that I had an error on my NFS configuration but I was wrong. I opened tty with ALT+F4 on the Fedora 13 client and I sew this error:
Code:
Is this a bug or can I modify anything to correct this error? How?

I believe server section is the best when speaking of RAID stuff...
I have the following situation:We have a DELL T3400 with embedded fake raid on it. I dont know exactly how the system was setup (I wasnt here at that time), but the RAID was enabled in bios and while booting, the two harddrives would be seen as members of intel raid volume0 (RAID 1 mirror). I am not sure if the software raid was actually properly configured in Linux (Fedora 9) and if the OS was reconstructing the whole raid or it was just the bios part that was mirroring the /boot or just some parts of it. Frankly I find these hydrid raids very confusing. Some bad disk manipulation from my part caused the server to crash, but I was able to recover and boot just with one hard drive after using fsck.
I decided to get rid of the raid as it's not the right solution for the application we need it for and decided to go for a traditional single harddrive system and to use Ghost for Linux to clone to a spare disk when backups are needed. So I installed the latest Fedora 12 distribution onto another harddrive and disabled RAID in bios (changed from RAID ON to autodetect, which is the only other option).
Here is what I have now:
/dev/sda has the newly installed fedora 12
/dev/sdb is an empty harddrive that I would use as an intermediate
/dev/sdc is the old harddrive member of intel raid volume0
sdb was partitioned into sdb1 sdb2 and sdb3 and I created an ext3 filesystem on sdb2. The hard drive belonging to RAID volume0 (sdc) has a lot of work done on it and I would like to be able to recuperate the files to the new disk (sda). I cannot mount that old harddrive while in fedora 12, as it sees some unknown raid member filesystem on it probably assigned by the intel raid chip.
So I decided to do it from the other side: to boot from raid volume 0, and from there mount a third intermediate harddrive (sdb) onto which I would copy the documents and then mount the same harddrive from the newly installed fedora 12 and copy those documents from that intermediate harddrive.I can mount /dev/sdb2 from fedora 12 fine and copy stuff to and from it, but not when I boot from the RAID volume 0 harddrive (sdc) with fedora 9 on it. It keeps saying that the partition in question (/dev/sdb2) is an invalid block device.I am stuck here, as my knowledge in this sort of things is very limited. If somebody can indicate me how to recuperate files from that old raid harddrive onto the new fedora 12 drive, I would appreciate a lot.
