Ubuntu :: Don't Have A Desktop Anymore - Boot Into A Full-featured Desktop?
May 2, 2011I guess I messed around with Unity on Ubuntu 11 a bit too much without knowing too much about it. Here's what's been happening: I chose the 'cube' setting in CCSM, but after switching to it, Unity crashed. So I rebooted and X11 started, but no Unity. Which means no window borders or anything.
how I could set it up again? I disabled the login-screen, as I'm the only user, so I guess I have no chance to simply choose Gnome for example to boot into a full-featured desktop.

Aug 31, 2011After power off the Gnome desktop environment does not start on my machine. It never gets past the splash screen with Fedora logo.The OS boots, and I can ssh and even run graphical applications, such as Thunderbird, remotely. No errors are reported in /var/log/Xorg.0.log. There are errors reported in .xsession-errors (attached) but I do not now how to recover from them

Jan 4, 2010I've been using Ubuntu 9.04 for a few months now after switching over from XP. I've figured most issues I've had via Google I guess about a week ago, everything I download whether it be from Firefox Or Transmissions won't show up on the desktop screen. When I few the folder in Nautilus, same thing. I can see the files with the 'dir' terminal command. I did try using 'sudo' to lauch Nautilus and was able to see my files. If I drag them out of the Nautilus window and on to my desktop, they appear. Keep in mind, I know the files are in MY directory and are owned by me. Any clue to what is causing this and how to fix it?

Oct 9, 2015I have debian 8.2 installed with kde desktop. When I try to shutdown the system sometimes, nothing happens. the desktop stays put. i can continue working though..the system does not freeze. The only option is to log into the terminal as su and shutdown with the shutdown command.

Jan 4, 2010Searched forever on how to get an icon on the desktop that will give you the shutdown menu. Every post I found said it wasn't possible, but it can be done (and very simply too)!FYI, this was done in Karmic (9.10)
1. Right click on desktop and select "Create Launcher..."
2. Give it a name and in the command field put "gnome-session-save --shutdown-dialog"
I also found the icon "usrshareiconsHumanityactions48applicat ion-exit.svg" to be well suited to replace the standard launcher icon.
Ubuntu :: Desktop Won't Boot After Shutdown / Solve This?
Oct 16, 2010For the past few days, my Ubuntu server (it is a desktop that functions as a server, Desktop installed) have been very slow.
Today, it stopped responding to ping, I could not SSH into it (once, I managed to come so far that it asked for my password, but I got timed out) and I could not connect via VNC.
I switched it off, to boot it up again. Post completed, and the screen went black, before the white text "Read Error" appeared on the screen.
I shut it down again, waited a minute or so, before switching it back on. This time, the "read error" did not show up. The "text only" startup for Ubuntu showed up, so I hoped it was all okay. It turned out it wasnt.

Feb 26, 2010I'm new to Ubuntu and have spent several days trying to make a few simple alterations to my Myth 9.10 installation. My biggest task was to get the MCE "power" and "start" buttons working, which they now are - sort of.
The problem is with the shutdown command that the power button activates seems to be different to the shutdown command from the taskbar shutdown menu i.e. when I switch off the computer with the remote it restarts with the "recovery" menu as it wasn't shutdown properly. Same thing happens with the shutdown command from a terminal window. Shutting off from the desktop menu is fine.

May 10, 2010Desktop goes blank after boot, then re-appears when shutdown. How do I fix? I turn on computer, it starts fine with the usual green boot screen, the little bar progresses then the screen goes blank. Then when I go to turn off (push power button), the desktop re-appears. What can i do to fix? I need my desktop back (I haven't made any changes to my system since last boot, and I have turned off, pulled cables out, put them in etc...it must be a software issue) I'm using OpenSuse 11.1 Gnome 32 bit

May 11, 2010I just recently installed Kubuntu desktop onto Ubuntu and I don't have any shutdown or restart options shown in KDE, but they show up in Gnome. I initially installed Kubuntu using GDM instead of KDM and switched to KDM when I saw that my Gnome taskbars overlayed my KDE taskbars. To switch from GDM to KDM I used the following command:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm
After enabling KDM the terminal suggested a command to configure KDM, however I can't remember the command. I ran it and I got a message that KDM was already configured.

Oct 16, 2010I installed ubuntu 10.10 and everything works perfectly, but whenever I go to shutdown/restart, after showing the ubuntu logo (just like when you log in), the logo goes away, and it just hangs/freezes there.
I've tried waiting even for 10 minutes, but nothing. It there anything I can manually edit for it to just shutdown? If it helps here is my PC...

Mar 28, 2011When trying to "Leave" the system (either via the small button on the lower right of the taskbar or by right clicking on the Desktop and selecting "Leave") the logout / shutdown / restart screen comes up. I have the "Logout" desktop effect activated, which is supposed to desaturated the background when the Leave screen appears. However, instead of simply greying out the background, the image on the desktop and the rest of the screen also gets slightly distorted, with seemingly random distortion effects cropping up all over the place (e.g. horizontal lines or large blurs).
These distortions are different every time the Leave screen comes up. The Leave screen itself is displayed fine, and apart from the dodgy background I have no other issues with the whole process (the system shuts down or restarts properly according to my choice). I am using the Radeon drivers, and all other desktop effects I have on (Magic lamb, cover switch, present windows, etc) work fine and without a hitch. It's only the Logout effect that seems to glitch. Are the distortions intentionally created by the effect in order to emphasize the focus on the Leave screen?
Server :: Shutdown The Nodes From The Master Terminal Using "shutdown -h Now" Get Shutdown?
Dec 10, 2010I have installed a cluster computer with 10 nodes . The manufacturer is HP . All nodes and the master node have redhat enterprise linux installed in them . When I shutdown the nodes from the master terminal using "shutdown -h now" they get shutdown . But they dont get completely turned off . This issue bothers me when the power supply is given , all nodes boot up simultaneously generating a huge heat .
Thing to note : When we shutdown our PC they get completely turned off . When the power supply is given , a press on the Power On button is required to boot the system. But , why does it not happpen in the case of cluster? Is there any other way of completely turning off the nodes from the master terminal ?

Oct 3, 2010I recently installed Fedora as dual boot with XP on my netbook, but then decided to uninstall it again. I probably did it in the wrong way because everything is messed up. I installed Fedora in a separate partition, so I just deleted that partition. Now when I rebooted my netbook, it starts GRUB.
I get some sort of command prompt like cmd.

I tried several stuff to get everything normal again. First I made a bootable USB which starts the XP Recovery console. Then I used these commands :

I reboot, and there it is again ... the GRUB. How can I get Windows XP working again? I didn't touch the C: boot partition, so the XP installation should still be intact.

I have updated Fedora with common updates these days and now i can't boot in Windows anymore, because there are no entry for it anymore to the boot menu.
The graphical boot configuration tool (i'm using Gnome) only lists three different kernel for Fedora but any entry for a Windows partition. Here is how my disk appears:
