Is there anyway to print on screen in a terminal window what an alias actually does?For example, if I had an command that was an alias to open something in some directory, is there a way of finding out what the alias actually does?is there a way without looking in .bashrc / .bash_profile etc?

View 5 Replies View RelatedIn 10.4 I had set my default terminal size to my screen width - I type some long commands. After running an update this morning, my terminal comes up in the install default size. Using the preferences dialog, I cannot find the control to set the default width. Has it been removed? I hope I'm looking in the wrong place, but I have a chilling feeling that it's been dropped or perhaps just accidentally commented out.

and cuz i need to get used to messing with terminal windows.
for example i would like to have "rawr" setup as a command to display a message on screen in a popup window with an "Ok" button to close the popup. i googled it but all i came up with was creating commands to launch applications without having to type the full path/command. not what i'm looking for. thanks in advance!!!
i'm not sure for using the correct channel here but i hope someone out there can answer my little questions. 1st in older version i was able to change the settings of the terminal look as the font color, background color and so on. I was also able to define a default window size of a new terminal window. But since after upgrading to to the first release this year and a complete new installation of the current release Maverick i do not find this option anymore. Is there a way how to set up the terminal default window size?

View 9 Replies View RelatedNewly installed Debian system from years with Fedora. Ran system update and system got hosed, booted but no Gnome. Got Gnome back after MANY 'aptitude upgrade's. Xemacs disappeared! Along with other things I installed. Tried to install Xemacs but it is broken and will not install, complains about dpkg TOO current(?). So downloaded Xemacs for Xemacs.org and compiled source, installed.
Now when I start Xemacs is does not run in an X window but runs emacs in a terminal window. If I run it from a script, it complains about 'not in tty window'.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am new to Samba.I'm running Fedora 10 and I've just download samba successfully and have the smb service running on my system.I'm in GNOME and select System and then Administration and Samba does not appear in the drop down menu.I have an NFS menu selection but no samba selection.I ran yum install and it installed successfully. If I can't get the samba config window is there a way I can configure in terminal window?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI find xcompmgr more than adequate for making a desktop look pretty modern, and I don't like the more extravagentCompiz gimmicks - but there is one thing that irritates when using xcompmgr which someone here might have worked round.
Rounded window borders don't draw and redraw properly when using the Terminal (gnome-terminal and the LXDE and Xfce ones) or system monitor and moving them from their default place. You get this little white botch at the corners. I'm not massively technical and I'm ambivalent about how much more I want to learn as I have plenty of creative outlets already, but I would like to solve this. Somehow xcompmgr is treating these programs as a different class? It's capable of drawing the window borders properly as it is just these two programs that get botched. Possibly this doesn't get noticed as maybe people usually use xcompmgr with openbox and LXDE and their square window borders. I did do a search but there was nothing matching what I saw.
How do I move the Window control buttons when the window is in full screen mode? I.e.: I know how to go into gconf-editor:

(I've intentionally disabled the menu...)
What I want is my window controls to be on the right side of the window when the window is in full screen mode.
Also I've had an issue with the Unity dockbar glitching out. I can still click on the buttons (i.e. the logout button) but it displays like a nintendo game inserted crooked. Is there a way to 'restart' unity without log out/ log in?
Any one else experienced any glitches with unity auto hiding/showing?
I have asked for a video capturing software before but recommend a GOOD screen recorder where you can select the window/window size the axis and also a good editing software which will render/export into FULL 720p HD

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm using 10.04, and gnome-terminal GNOME Terminal 2.30.2 . I have irssi running on screen session on remote host. And I've been struggling for quite many days to configure it to produce either visual feedback or ring terminal's bell when I receive a private message or one of those that are highlighted.
My compiz settings window in General tab has 'Audible bell' checked.
My GNOME terminal has 'Terminal bell' checked.
I also added 'set bell-style audible' to my ~/.inputrc
And I also tried to manually load pcspkr module into my kernel.
No of the above helped or at least I haven't been able to notice any difference.
I also used some commands for irssi to produce bell sign.
I'm hoping this is the right category. Is there a terminal command to display what network you're currently connected to?

I have a favorite REXX program called fv2. When I was a Windows user I had an icon for fv2 on the Quick Launch bar. Click that icon, and the program ran. Now, as a Linux (Ubuntu) user it is necessary to go through several steps to run fv2.
1) Launch a terminal by clicking on the terminal icon at the top of the screen. What's that area called? The GNOME panel?
2) Enter: ~/Desktop/RexxScripts
3) Enter: regina fv2
I run fv2 several times per day and would really like to have the convenience of a clickable icon.

After finally fixing a problem with screen resolutions on my son's PC, (it was stuck at 640x480), now the Terminal window comes up as blank space. I can still type command lines, but can't see what I'm typing nor the response - it's all a white box

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have Ubuntu 10.04 running kernel .26 installed on my Dell Dimension 2350 with 512mb of memory. The problem I have been having is, When I am using the computer mostly Internet stuff for no reason the monitor will go black then on the screen it will be at a terminal screen, kind of like when you start up the computer, I don't remember what is all on it but the last thing in the list was: checking battery state: OK after that the screen will flash in multiple colors and then it goes into a loop of just black screen than a colorful flash and back over to a black screen. the only way I can fix that is by holding down the power button. this will happen mostly on face-book on the games and just on the profile page, but it does happen just checking my gmail or play solitaire it does this around 4-8 times a day.

But if I have firefox already up and running it will open as tabs of the firefox I already have running. How can I open the multiple pages in a new window in this case?
- Using -no-remote could work, but I would have to make a whole different firefox profile for each set of pages, not really a solution. - Also tried setting it to a particular display and it opened as a tab again. ie. firefox [URL] -display=":0.0"

View 5 Replies View RelatedI don't quite know how to put this problem - recently, my installation has started losing the text in terminal and other windows. I will open a terminal window, and there's nothing there - no cursor, no background. After this occurs, I try to restart the system - the 'Restart" window appears, and is also blank. Hitting enter at this point blanks the entire screen to black, after which the only recourse is to power-down and restart. Of course, then I need to run the recovery mode and fsck to get the system back up.
The first time this happened, I had to rebuild the kernel to recover. Luckily, i lost no data, but this is making the system unusable. I need a stable system to finish the project I am developing for an embedded Linux system.
I am running Ubuntu 9.10, with the latest updates.
running 9.10 trying to run applications on Wine. I have a problem with my diabetes software as Bayer Glucofacts requires Java Runtime Envirionment 1.6.0_07 or higher to install.I suspect that I would need to download and install JRE through a terminal window? I have done some with YUM but cannot figure out how to yet with Ubuntu.
