Sometimes at startup I get this message "Checking disk 1 of 1". Does that mean it's checking all partitions on the hd? After a bad shutdown there is no prompt for fsck to run and the system just boots up. In fstab I have both options set to "1" for the partition Ubuntu is on, all others set to "0". Any ideas on both?

I've formatted all the hard disks to EXT4, and I'm using kernel version 2.6.32-686-bigmem.When I tried to install the program saidar, it surprised me why it does not show my hard drives under 'mountpoint' [URL] <-- Saidar screenshot) as I could when I ran with Debian Lenny with the same kernel, but where the hard drives were formatted in EXT3. My laptop which has Ubuntu 10.04 as OS and the hard drive is formatted in EXT4 can easily show the hard drive in saidar.
I also tried to install PHP SysInfo on the Debian computer, but it does not bother to show anything on the hard disks
I tried to check fstab file and I can see that Debian uses UUID to identify the hard drives, but I've tried to change it to something with /dev/sdx, but it did not help either.[URL] (fstab file)
I know that Debian squeeze is very new, but it would be nice if someone could give me a hint what might be wrong, because I am a little tired of all time to use 'du-hs' command To find out how much space is spent on the various drives, since the command is a little slow, since hard disks are well filled.
If you have a contiguous partial piece of an ext4 file system (assuming it's perfectly clean), starting from the beginning of the partition, is there any way to check it, or to mount it to get the files whose parents, inodes and data are all completely contained inside?
Have (or maybe had) a very large 11TB RAID 6 array, filled with a single large ext4 partition. Something strange happened when a single drive failed and the array ended up failing 13 out of the 11 drives. I had trouble getting the array restarted, and got to the point where I exhausted all of the options I considered completely safe. I considered a few things that may have worked, but mdadm doesn't seem to have a definite "do not change anything" option. So I decided the only way to be absolutely safe would be to clone the disks before proceeding - then I realized how much time that would take and sent the drives off to a recovery service so they could image them and check it out.
Before doing so, I copied the first 2GB from each disk. I XORd the images from the working drives to reconstruct the data chunks that were on the failed disk, manually assembled the chunks, and am very confident that I have 22GB of "correct" data in a single file. The parity and Q syndromes all matched (with RAID 6 you can still check with only 1 missing device). I've learned the fine details of ext4 from [URL], and have looked at lots of raw data from the reconstructed partition, and it all looks good. The recovery company says that they're not finding many inodes, but I found a lot of them, exactly where they're supposed to be. I tried to mount and e2fsk, but both processes seem to be extremely unhappy that the device size doesn't match the size implied by the file system geometry.
I considered hacking the superblock to manually reduce the size, but I figure that wouldn't work because there would then be more group descriptor blocks than it would expect after the superblocks. I might try doing that and compensating by incrementing the "reserve block count" to compensate. Alternatively, if there is some way to make the file appear to be the expected size with nothing but zeroes after the end of the actual data, maybe I could mount it and not get any errors until I cause the kernel to read past the true end of the file.
OS: Debian unstable 32bit, kernel 2.6.32-2, grub 1.98 from late january 2010 (only have working net-access from work now, so I am grabbing information from memory). EXT3 and EXT4 support is compiled into the kernel along with chipset/scsi/sata support (not as modules), and I have tested to boot ext3 with it before proceeding. Prereq: my old disk started to have too much S.M.A.R.T errors, so I bought another one, put in a USB cabinet, added swap and ext4 partition/filesystem to it, and copied over all data from the old system to the new that was mounted at /dest using the command "find ./ -xdev -print0 | cpio -paV0 /dest". Swiched disks, so I now have the ext4 disk sitting at /dev/sda (partitions: sda1 => ext4, sda2 => swap), and booted into rescue-mode from cdrom, using /dev/sda1 as root with a shell on. After doing this, I performed the following commands:
mount --bind /dev /dest/dev
chroot /dest
modified the /etc/default/grub to instruct the kernel to boot using ext4, ran grub-install --recheck /dev/sda
ran update-grub to modify /boot/grub/grub.cfg (which looks as it should) After doing this, grub finds my partition and mounts it. It however stalls with the message: "warning: unable to open an initial console" and does nothing after this point. I have no ramdisk, but my old kernel booted fine from ext3 (and still does if I copy it to a ext3 partition), and since the ext4 support is compiled into the kernel - should I really need a ramdisk?
I'm trying to install NVIDIA-Linux-x86-185.18.31-pkg1.run on 9.10 Alpha 3. I've tried using envyng but it wouldn't even start for some reason. It would ask for my password and that was it. So I downloaded the driver from Nvidia's site and tried to install manually. When I open terminal and put sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop, it hangs at "Checking battery

View 2 Replies View RelatedOn my FC11 installation Palimpset Disk Utility icon in the top menu bar is reporting that I have a disk failure with the caption "one or more disks is failing".When I open up the details section in Pilimpset I can see that "2 sectors are failing",I have checked this with gparted checking facility and it reports that the disk is OK.What I would like to do is to check the disk using a command like tool or ofline tool, which would then tell me where those bad sectors are on that partition so that I can resize it (using gparted) and have the bad sectors in NON ALLOCATED DISK SPACE.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a problem with getting my Linux distribution (Debian amd64-bit) to install. Everything works the way it should - from booting a live CD/DVD (any distro) to running the text-based or gui installation right after bootup. Up until the Linux installation gets to the step for detecting my SATA hard disk drive(s), but before (or at the same time as) initiating the partitioning step, it'll freeze/hang my screen and my CD/DVD drives instantaneously - and the only fix is a forced shutdown and/or hard reboot.
I don't know what causes this, but I tried googling online and all that I really found out was that it might be an issue with running 32-bit vs 64-bit installations - but this is not the case; from running Gparted on Knoppix 32-bit or the partitioning step during a Debian 64-bit installation. Also, I read a random post online related to running kernel commands / parameters alongside the installation (e.g. acpi=off or something similar) stating that it might help?
Anyone got any ideas or solutions? I'm a real newbie when it comes to Linux (though, I'm quite knowledgeable when it comes to computers and technology, and Windows) - else I wouldn't be posting in this forum sub-section, hehe. I can't quite get my head around this one - despite trying my best to find a solution online beforehand.

I'm trying to setup my test nagios to check the disk space of another linux box. I've got it setup and checking. But to my surprise, it was checking the nagios server's local disk space instead of the remote linux.

ran out of space in my /home dir. Have a second hard drive to install and would like to designate it as additional space for /home. I do not want to mount it as a dir inside my home I would like it to simply work as though my /home simply has more space available to it.

I have an external drive (FAT32) with files taken from an NTFS (mp3s and such) and I would like to put them and use them on an ext4 ubuntu platform. Can I make a partition of the /home folder NTFS and the system ext4 and function properly? I do have configuration files in the /home folder since Im building a domain controller that utilizes samba on ubuntu: would I be better off using a dual boot with windows/ubuntu and placing the files on the Windows partition? what is my best option?>

View 4 Replies View RelatedI formatted a 500GB with ext4 format, and placed in a usb box, it showed up, but could not write, copy past etc to it, the same disk was formatted in NTFS, and FAT32 showed up and could do all the above actions, given that ext4/ext4/ext2 are specifically made for Linux, then why on earth they don't get mounted automatically and work normally from usb box and ports?

One question that I have tried to Google for a solution with no success is, how do you access ext4 from Windows? Shortly after I installed OpenSUSE, my OpenSUSE hard drive "vanished" from Windows 7. aturally, I can access all my hard drives from OpenSUSE, which does support the NTFS. I am quite sure that I am not the only person who has this problem as I know that dual booting Linux and Windows is quite common.

After this the problem got worse now i am not able to see any of the drives in the side panel. Gone through many forum and posts all discuss about external USB HDD.
Tuesday night I wanted to make a backup of my Ubuntu ext4 partition via Clonezilla so I configured that an image had to be made and it would be saved on the NTFS external disk. But it said it needed 23 hours to create a 5gb backup, so I resetted my computer as this took too long. But after this, Ubuntu nor Windows recognized my drive.
I called Seagate and they told me after troubleshooting 30 minutes, that there is no option of fixing the drive and I had to send it to RMA. What could be wrong? Clonezilla works via a bootable ISO on Debian. The disk drive is still spinning. I already rebooted the external drive, but it's not working. In Linux the disk is no longer mounted and cannot be mounted:

What could have happened? Would the data still be accessible on the internal drive? Did I just loose 1.5TB data that was stored on the external disk?
I have been having problems with filesystem corruption on my eeepc 1000H for a long time now. I have tried using different filesystems, kernels and distributions (arch, slackware) to no effect. I am starting to grow suspicious that this problem lies somewhere else, as I haven't seen anyone else having similar problems in such a variety of scenarios.
I have tried testing my ram using memtest86+, didn't come up with anything after a full run through. I also have tried using e2fsck -c to check for bad blocks, it finds none. I had a go at using smartctl but wasn't really sure what I was doing. I did a long test and it came up with nothing anyway.
This problem is in addition to the problems I've been having with my intel graphics chip and KMS. A lot of the time there are lockups when booting into X, which can only be gotten out of by a hard reset. This is sometimes what causes the original filesystem errors. I've stopped messing around with KMS for now to eliminate this but my current system in unbootable. I'm guessing my disk is wrecked but have as yet seen no definitive proof. Can anyone recommend anything that I should do?
I am currently on ext4 with a custom kernel 2.6.33-rc6 (the stock kernel shipping with slackware does not have the elantech extension for psmouse included). When I was using arch, I was just using the stock kernels.
Can windows read files from a home file server with an ext4 file system? or do I have to partition the drive with the server (ext4) and an ntfs partition with the files on?

Gdm/X exit and I can see a terminal screen with a lot of info (but I can not capture it, except taking a photo). I must press reset button. It's not all times, but at least 50% I shutdown printer. Sometimes I turn on printer to get a photocopy and turn off later, and system hand, so, it's not necesary to print or scan to get this error.
I've just installed Debian AMD64 on my main box (Intel Q6600, Ati HD4770, Asus P5K) using the DVD install. It boots, but hangs when it tries starting the graphical interface. No reports, no commandline, nothing at all - a nice black screen and completely unresponsive system.
Debian x86 works with no problems.
If I shutdown from X the system hangs and I have to yank out the power cord. Same on logout.
ctrl+alt+f1 hangs for a few minutes and then starts a terminal; which does not respond to the keyboard.
There are no tty.conf files in /etc/init .
But inittab looks normal to me and includes tty (1-6)
Executing init 6 from a terminal in X will reboot the system
I was thinking this might be a dbus issue, but I am not sure. I also understand some recent issues exist with SysRq sequences. May be a video card issue,,,
Other than normal package upgrades the only changes were a recent change from a VGA to HDMI cable. I can't see why that would matter
