Fedora :: Can Install On One Computer / But Put Drive In Different One?

May 12, 2010

I am looking to save myself some time with the install.I have a much faster computer than the server this drive is to go in. If I can install on the faster computer that would save a couple of hours. With the changes that kernel 2.6.x bring, is this possible?

Fedora Installation :: Install Fedora Into Flash Drive Instead Computer

Sep 9, 2011

Im taking the class now in college once a week. My professor said that we need to install any Linux operating systems so I chose Fedora, but he said we need at least 16GB free of space to install it in our computer, sadly i only have 1GB space left remaining. I told him about it and he told me about installing Fedora in my flash drive that has space of 16GB. I really am interested in this course and want to understand all of this stuff so can anyone tell me the process to install Fedora into flash drive so I can boot it anywhere else other than home? Also since he said I need 16GB to install it don't I got to buy 32GB flash drive at least?

Ubuntu :: Install Computer Booted From The Disk Drive?

Apr 29, 2011

I 've just upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04 and I had a really hard time doing so. I have downloaded and burned the ISO, I restarted in order to install ubuntu and my computer booted from the disk drive, no problem so far. After I chose my language the purple screen with the option "Install Ubuntu" appeared and I highlighted the option and pressed "Enter". THEN, I got a black, empty screen while I was able to listen to my disk drive reading the disk.Everything was OK except for my screen.I thought there was a problem with the ISO or the disk itself. But, I 've tried different CDs and DVDs and I also downloaded the ISO several times. Unfortunately, I had always the same problem: disk drive working (making sound), screen-->BLACK-EMPTY. I was about to give up hope when I decided to turn on my desk lamp because it was getting dark. I was working on my last attempt and after I, once again, pressed "Enter" on the "Install Ubuntu" option I got the same dark screen as always but this time, because of the lamp, I saw that Ubuntu was actually being installed but the screen did not have any light. I managed to install it properly using my lamp to see what's going on on my screen but it's obvious that I can't possibly work that way. SO, how do I make my screen light come back so I can enjoy my new OS???

Note: My screen is working perfectly with windows so, it cannot be a hardware problem.

I obviously don't know the password. y question is: If I plug the laptop's hard drive into another computer, install Ubuntu as described above and then reconnect it to my laptop, will it work?

Debian Installation :: Computer Hangs After Install On External Hard Drive With Flashing

Apr 4, 2016

I have spend way too much time on this and it still fails. I installed the debian 8.3.0 AMD64 CD1 iso image on an empty external USB 1TB Western digital My passport Ultra. I use the graphical install method and the installation process of Debian appears to go fine, except it informs me at one point I am missing some nonfree firmware for something with wifi, but that shouldn't relate to this.

*FYI I put GRUB on the external hdd, sdb in this case.
*windows 7 is on the internal hard drive and I excluded it from the boot sequence
* using laptop lenovo t410

I reboot my computer and it hangs with a flashing - in the upper right corner. Never even gets to GRUB. For awhile I thought I might have partitioned something wrong, but I am now convinced that isn't likely. I tried countless number of different partition configs. Separate /boot partition and I also tried using guided partitioning.

I mounted the partitions of the external hard drive using another OS and GRUB appears to be there. So it is there.

I know some Western digital hard drives have added priopertary firmware crap, so I tried installing on a external Seagate drive and it still hangs. I tried installing linux mint on the Western Digital drive and it works fine!

BIOS settings fine. USB settings fine. I tried booting via the boot menu and moving the USB HDD to the top of the list.

I also tried installing with Debian Live on a USB, but that actually has more problems for some reason. I can never get passed the partitioning phase because it fails to create /boot or /swap partitions saying something about how they are still in use and another thing about how the partition table hasn't been updated in the kernal yet.

It seems I might be having this same issue, not sure: [URL] ...

I then put the computer into suspend or hibernate or whatever and now it won't start up. At all. And I'm stuck as 'everything' I need is on that computer.

Fedora Installation :: Install F14 On A Computer That Has Vista On It?

May 1, 2011

trying to install F14 on a computer that has Vista on it. I chose the option for it to shrink my existing partition since it takes up the whole hard drive. On the next screen I choose my install drive... then it asks me (dont remember verbatim) by how much do I want to shrink the current partition? I put 200 (I assume its GB... is it MB?) and then it said shrink failed and then takes me back. Is that question on how much I want to shrink have to do with how much space I'm putting on the new F14 partition or how much I'm leaving on the windows partition?

Fedora Installation :: How To Install Fedora 11 On External USB Drive With Anti-virus?

Sep 28, 2009

I have a Western Digital Pasport 320 GB hard drive. I wanted to create a live installation on it like a USB stick. I wanted it to serve as a portable OS that I could use to boot any other computer off of, and use it for diagnostics and anti-virus scanning on Windows based computers. The additional space is for my own personal use, kind of like having a mobile desktop where I have all of my documents in one place. What I need to know is how to set up Fedora 11 so that the hard drive will boot on most PCs regardless of their architecture. I also need to know what's a good Anti-virus to install onto it for the sake of fixing Windows hard drives.

Please keep in mind I'm a noob when it comes down to a lot of things, so if there's an antivirus I have to install manually, please included a step by step.

Debian :: Can't Access 2nd Dvd Drive From Computer?

Jan 22, 2011

My problem is that the OS does not show my 2nd DVD drive (slave to the first one).I tried editing fstab as per man pages, and as per several instructions I got using google, but to no avail. In the end, I reinstalled Debian with a data CD in the 2nd DVD drive, hoping that the presence of media would "force" Debian to recognize the drive - but this did not help. In the end,as I am completely clueless, please help me to help the OS recognize and provide access to the 2nd drive.

Here are a few things that can help explain better- > 1. see the attached picture file for "inside" the Computer. Note the Slave DVD drive does not appear.Screenshot of Computer Icon on Desktop showing that only the Primary DVD drive is visible - and not the Slave DVD drive.

Ubuntu :: My Computer Won't Recognize My Hard Drive

Apr 4, 2010

So I tried to install Ubuntu on my Acer Aspire ASE380 desktop, and I think during the partition portion. I think I messed up the hard drive.

Now my computer won't recognize my hard drive. I've tried using the acer repair disks I made, I tried unplugging and checking all the cords and lines, I tired flashing the BIOS, I've tried using other boot disks like Ultimate boot CD, and Acer support is no help either.

I really don't know what to do now. It shows nothing in the boot setup or the BIOS set up. I've also tired the ALT - F10 for acer computers to enter and repair partition and nothing.

I just want to get this thing up and running. I'm tempted to just buy a new hard drive.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Computer Does Not Detect DVD In Drive ?

Apr 15, 2010

I installed 9.04 on both two computers -- on an old PIII 667 box and on a dual core Intel (Dell).

DVDs play on the old PIII (jerky to be sure, but it's an old box with only 512 MB memory).

But the dual-core Intel does not even recognize that there is a DVD in the drive, so nothing happens after the disk is inserted and the drive activity light stops flashing. Nothing.

When we look in "Places" to see what drives appear on the Dell the hard drive icon shows up as does the optical drive icon. But clicking on that optical drive icon brings up a message that there is no media in the drive.

On the other hand, on the old PIII the DVD shows up in "Places" along side the hard drive and optical drive icons. Clicking on the DVD icon launches Movie Player (Totem) and the DVD plays.

I don't even know where to begin trouble-shooting this one so that the dual-core Dell will recognize that there is a disk in the drive and then play DVDs.

We do have libdvdcss2 on both computers.

One other item worth noting... Previously the Dell had SuSE Linux 11.1, and it did play DVDs without problem.

Is there an output file from the non-responding computer I can post to this list that would help identify what's preventing a DVD from being seen?
