I need to store a copy of my c drive someplace in case installing corrupts my hard disk, I was wondering if it is safe to store a entire c drive on another computer in a folder, and if I do, can I format a corrupt hard drive then copy the contents of the stored c drive folder back into it and the computer will work again.

So right now I am dual booting Windows 7 and Ubuntu.Today, my landlord asked me for help because his machine is filled with virues. So first thing I did was throw it onto one of my spare sata drives and tried to clean it in windows. Got a torjan that for some reason, MS essentials wasnt able to remove. So I am now in Ubuntu trying to remove it with KlamAV, however, KlamAV doesn't seem to spot the same file right now.
So my question is, is there another good virus scanner that works? I tried AVG but it seems they don't support linux anymore, just linux server.

I have been told that some virus scanners for linux (including but not limited to AVG, Antivira, clamAV, others) are available to ubuntu. My question is which of these still CURRENTLY support detection of WINDOWS viruses in addition to linux viruses. I would like to boot the Ubuntu live jump drive I have to scan windows machines and at least detect viruses, dont really need to repair. who knows which virus scanners compatible with ubuntu that will detect windows viruses as well

I'm looking for a virus scanner to scan some removable media (USB drives, mp3 players, etc). Since there's so many choices to choose from, can anyone recommend any?
I've heard a lot of people recommending clam av, but everything I've read suggests that clam av is better used for scanning e-mail servers and not home desktop application...

I have a Western Digital Pasport 320 GB hard drive. I wanted to create a live installation on it like a USB stick. I wanted it to serve as a portable OS that I could use to boot any other computer off of, and use it for diagnostics and anti-virus scanning on Windows based computers. The additional space is for my own personal use, kind of like having a mobile desktop where I have all of my documents in one place. What I need to know is how to set up Fedora 11 so that the hard drive will boot on most PCs regardless of their architecture. I also need to know what's a good Anti-virus to install onto it for the sake of fixing Windows hard drives.
Please keep in mind I'm a noob when it comes down to a lot of things, so if there's an antivirus I have to install manually, please included a step by step.

I work at a local computer shop as a computer technician and we get many computer in daily that require external virus scans (having to take out the hard drives, sticking it in another machine) just to scan (if we're lucky we can sometimes just do it in safe mode). Now what I want to know is...
1. Is it possible to install Ubuntu to an external HDD and use it virtually anywhere I plug it in? Will it pick up the network card, graphics card, etc so I can just plug and go? (Of course there are drivers for some computers).
2. Is it possible to run a Windows oriented virus scanner on Ubuntu? I know I can use WINE to run Windows applications, but will it prove to be compliant with virus scanners as well?
3. The main reason why I want it to be able to pick up on hardware and just work is because I plan on using it for schooling / travelling as well, have all my documents etc saved on it for easy access.
I've used Ubuntu in the past on an old laptop that didn't have much memory, small HDD, and a crap processor but that was 5-6 years ago (I still have the disk they sent me for free ).

Initially when I shrunk my NTFS Windows partition to install Fedora 11 I underestimated how much space I'd need for Fedora. Now that I'm using it as my primary operating system I have wasted space in the form of spare space on my NTFS partition. I was just wandering how safe it is to shrink this partition and move the free space to my /home partition using gparted on Linux? This would probably involve having to shift things towards the beginning of the drive as the Windows partition is at the beginning and the /home directory is at the end. Would I need to use a LiveCD to do this since it's meddling with an active operating system? I know I should back up the data, but is it quite safe to do it despite gparted in all likelihood having to move data from block to block across the drive?

can't seem to get my Linux AntiVirus Live update to download virus defs from my Windows Symantec Update Server?Windows workstations can update and download without a problem? When I run LiveUpdate from the side it errors out with "an error has occurred (code=-2,001)" Also, I'm not sure where the Linux defs are to be placed on my windows side for download from my linux workstations? I've found a couple good articles but everything I've tried hasn't fixed my problem? If I download the virus defs locally to each linux box I can update the virus defs without a problem, not a good option when I have several Linux boxes.

I just received a Canon Pixma MX320 as a gift.
I am currently running the Ubuntu 10.04 OS
I was able to get the printer up and running by downloading the printer driver for debian linux (3.1) from the Canon site without any problems.
Unfortunately I am not having the same luck with the scanner.
I tried downloading ScanGear MP for Linux (deb) (1.3) from the same Canon site but have not yet been able to get the XSane Image Scanner to recognize this scanner driver for my Canon.

I know that running linux makes you safer from viruses, since viruses are mostly windows based, however IMHO there are still chances to get some kind of viruses or better said some malicious code in scripts/cookies via browsing. I'm no expert if this field and would therefore need some of your advice. So the thing that made me think, happened yesterday, when I, as a registred user on forum Allgemeines Forum got an email, from one, who obviously didn't have good intentions. I did report the mail on the forum, here Forum abused?!you can check the thread with original mail I got. I did follow the link in the mail to check what is it about, and saw a script that fired up, pretending that it scans my computer for viruses and as a result showed that I have many viruses on my pc on various places. Quickly I saw it can't be true, since the content on the page displayed was showing as if I had a Win xp system. And when I tried to click to close it, it offered me some exe file to install, at that point I closed the browser and didn't download the file. However I am a bit in doubt if anything else downloaded automatically without my confirmation (a cookie, script,..), which executes with the help of the browser and is not OS dependent. So now I wonder how could I check I didn't get anything malicious? The most threatening I find some potential "key logger" which would monitor my input on password protected areas I browse. Browsing around I found a nice site showing how to protect you browser better Securing Your Web Browser and I tend to follow some of the advices mentioned for firefox. I know that for safe browsing it is not just the browser responsible, but also the user using it. So any your advices from this field would be appreciated and by posting this, I would also like to point at some most tricky ways, that some f****** imbeciles try to use in order to steal private data, so watch out.

I installed Fedora 11 about a week ago. And all was going well until I woke up this morning, and started using it for a little bit. I noticed it was going painfully slow... (almost like Windows Vista >.<) and I started to look for a reason why. Turns out my free space in my filesystem is running out. I have a 500g hard drive, and for some reason my filesystem is only set to use 9gigs...
Why can I only use 9 gigs of my hard drive? And how can I increase that size to something less annoying so I don't have to delete stuff every few days? Also, I'm kinda new to Linux. So if this is a newb question, and you can link me somewhere to get the information, please do. I just spent an hour or so searching google, and using this forums search to no avail.

How do you know if a site is safe to download from ?
Have only been using Mint 11 for 3 days after 7 years with windows and the usual safety nets there were the https headings and firewalls blocking stuff but how do you know something is safe in Linux ?
In short how do you know it's a trusted site ?

restore a partition images on another machine to the unused space on my laptop. I'm using netcat and dd to restore the partition.
On laptop:
nc -l 192.168.192.254 9000 | dd bs=1024 conv=notrunc,noerror seek=<some block pos> of=/dev/sda
On W/S:
dd if=part.img bs=1024 | nc 192.168.192.254 9000
The problem is that fdisk -l displays start & end sectors of the partitions and I need to know blocks. How do I determine the block number after the last partition to start writing this image?
Quote:
cat /proc/partitions
Displays blocks per partition. I could add those numbers up but is sure would be nice to have a utility that just give you what you need.

My Ubuntu 9.10 is intalled on a partition on my computer HDD. The other partition OS is Windows XP. My Windows uses McAfee as the antiviral program. Granted that linux is at a much less risk for viruses, some still apparently can slide through on incoming emails from Windows computers.
1) Will my Windows partition McAfee protect the entire computer?
2) If not, suggestions for an anti-viral program?

Installed Ubuntu 9.1 karmic koala in a dualboot with Windows XP to remove a virus from the windows drive. I think the virus was found but somehow I have done something to cause a invalid drive error message at startup. I read that gparted may by a way to fix this, but I don't want to do anymore damage.
This is what is displayed when I start Gparted /home/ubuntu/Desktop/Screenshot--dev-sda - GParted.png

I used to be able to scan perfectly fine when using 10.10, and it just won't work anymore I have the HPLIP toolbox installed, and I can't get it to open/run!
