Update manager and software center both run, but when I click on "install," they both just sit there and don't respond. If I run software center from a command line, I get the error "WARNING - _on_trans_error: org.freedesktop.PolicyKit.Error.Failed." (There are no updates right now, so I can't get an error from the update manager.) Apparently they aren't invoking gksudo or whatever it is they need to elevate privileges. I can get around this by running them as root, but it is kind of annoying. I'm really surprised that no one else has had this problem, but I've searched it a number of times and I can't find any indication of someone having the same symptoms.

Just installed 11.04 with usb stick; clean install, one OS. When I try updatemanager it dosnt work, error occurs. If I try and update through teminal error occurs, also tried to install skype through software center but it just kept loading (it did this on all appz I searched for). Also tried to install spotify as instructed on their website. It didn't work...
View 9 Replies View RelatedWhen I go to run the update manager, I get this message:
E:Malformed line 59 in source list/etc/apt/sources.list(dist parse)
I believe this error is also affecting other parts of my system.
this happened to me before, where when I try to open Software Center, Synaptic package manager, or update manager, it would freeze with the window open and I would have to force it to shut down. I decided to re-install the OS after this happened and I just updated ubuntu and it is happening again.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI tried to install emergent using following guide:[URL](Ubuntu) However, I did not succeed, it seems that it could not install emergent properly. My far worse problem now is that it messed up my software center and update manager. I get following error message when starting the software-center:

Update Manager and Packet Manager do not work.
Ubuntu Software Center is also affected.
Ok so I having the same issue as everyone else but it still exists despite the solutions other people are experiencing. Update manager, synaptic, and apt-get are not working no aptitude on here. Update manager says: An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information. report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message: 'E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, Eroblem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/us.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_natty_universe_ i18n_Translation-en%5fUS, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.' apt-get has errors with headers, finding files, and wrong file types. I have gone to a couple locations and the files exist and the hash is correct, and the file types are correct. I have tried replacing the sources file. I have tried sudo rm -r /var/lib/apt/lists sudo apt-get clean sudo apt-get update with the same problem happening upon updating. In the same exact areas.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI just installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my EEEPC 1000-HA. I don't have a CDROM because it's a netbook. Everytime I try to do an update, Update Manager says that I must insert the Ubuntu CDROM. It gives me no option to change location so that I can use my USB drive. I can't get updates due to this issue. How do I install the needed files so Update Manager can get updates?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI can't seem to get apt-get or the update manager to work consistently since I upgraded to 10.04. First, I get a regular segmentation fault on about a daily basis, I run sudo rm /var/cache/apt/*.bin as I saw in other threads, and then it usually works.
However now anytime I try to update, upgrade or install, I get the following error:
Reading package lists... Error!
E: Problem parsing dependency Depends
E: Error occurred while processing git-cola (NewVersion1)
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/us.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_lucid_universe_ binary-i386_Packages
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
I've been using 10.04 for some time, but now Update Manager won't open, nor will Ubuntu Software. With all the apparent problems, I don't plan to upgrade to 10.10, but I do like to keep my OS updated and current.

and i cant burn dvd with brasero also my sis760 doesnt work on this
im trying to switch back to windows but i need to copy the image to a dvd
but brasero doesnt work and when ever i use the software center i see nothing under the categories
I seem to remember you could sort the software by popularity, it was quite interesting and useful.
any chance the software center can be tweaked to allow for custom sorting? I find this a limitation.
When I try to open Synaptic Package Manager and update-manager it gives me the following error message:
'E:Type 'n' is not known on line 2 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/banshee-team-ppa-maverick.list, E:The list of sources could not be read.'
How to solve this error because my system cannot update or install any new application.
I've installed the GNOME Update Manager (0.68-debian.7) from the official Debian package archive. However, after checking for new packages and clicking "Install the updates", the update manager asks for rights and then just checks for new updates again. Selecting different packages didn't help either, it just checks for updates again and doesn't update anything. Has anyone experienced the same problem
View 6 Replies View RelatedUpdate manager pops up telling me there are new updates, but clicking on the 'Install Updates' button does nothing. However, if I click on Settings, then just close the settings dialog,it then says 'Starting Update Manager' and when that finished, the 'Install Updates' will work, but I have to do this every time I restart the computer.

This happened completely randomly. One day, my synaptic and update manager is working fine and the next day, I open one of them and get a error window that doesn't say anything (no details on the error). So, i tried the terminal, sudo apt-get update, and this message shows:
