Apr 27, 2010I'm new to fedora, and I used "chmod 766 usr" command,
then I got an message and suddenly changed usr folder like a file.
then i reboot the machine but then I couldn't login to the computer.

Fedora :: Login Screen Won't Load On F12 / Sort It?
Mar 21, 2010I've been using fedora now for a while without major problems - since yesterday. Last night i rebooted my computer and to my surprise, this is what happened:
The Fedora screen takes a little bit longer to load and after that, instead of showing the login screen, i get a black screen with a prompt blinking. I can log in on text mode pressing alt+f2 alright. Tried "startx", but that did nothing for me, i only get a backtrack list and a "fatal server error: Caught signal 11 (Segmentation fault). Server aborting. There's also something about checking the log file at "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" but when i try to open it i get a Permission denied message.
Ubuntu :: After Upgrade To 10.04 I Can't Login / Sort It?
Jun 4, 2010I have recently upgraded to ubuntu 10.04 on a machine which I installed the kubuntu-desktop package onto. After the installation I tried to login to a KDE session and my password is accepted. The login screen disappears before the loading splash screen for KDE appears, however this only stays on the screen for a few seconds before the login screen appears again and the drumbeat sound is played (as if you had just turned it on).
Note that GRUB works fine.
UPD (17:48:10 4/06/2010) I have re-installed plasma-desktop, kubuntu-desktop and kdemain packages and this has only caused a longer delay before the login screen is displayed again.
Please could somebody send me in the right direction to get this fixed. I have attached kdm.log.1 as a txt file as this may help diagnose some errors.
Red Hat :: Unable To Login As A Normal User / Sort It?
Feb 24, 2010I am unable to login as normal user. I am sure that my password is correct. What are the possible reasons behind this and also the solutions. My /etc/password and /etc/shadow files are good and my login haven't set to /etc/nologin.

CentOS 5 :: Black Screen With Mouse Pointer After X Login / Sort It?
Aug 16, 2010I had a perfectly well running CentOS 5 system but with an old crappy monitor. I replaced the monitor by a bigger one, i did a monitor detect to make sure that CentOS would recognize the highest possible resolution. Then changed the display rsolution for the current user.
Now when i login as root just a black screen appears with a white mouse pointer and then nothing. I already deleted all the contents in the home directory /root but no improvement.
When i login as a new user X is starting perfectly.
Anyone have a clue what i need to do or delete to get X working again? I can nuke the whole box and do a reinstall but i'd rather not.
OpenSUSE :: Getting Login Error When I Select Meego As Session Type / Sort It?
Jul 30, 2010I installed goblin by run GoblinUI.ymp and logged out.
After I logged out, I chose meego as session type and tried to login again.
I entered correct password, but when I press enter after type password , display change to black and got some message and backed to login session again.
On the other hand, I succeed in running MeeGo Live CD(1.0.1 build 1.4).
I wrote MeeGo Live CD image on USB Flash Driver by using Win32 Disk Imager, and boot that one successfully, although it has some flaw.
Network Settings Window is stuck in workspace and can't move or close, so it cover other appication's window. Internet on toolbar is broken, so I have to run FireFox in application toolbar to use internet.
I'm using Netbook based on Atom CPU and GMA.OpenSUSE installed in my netbook is installed by KDE Live CD image.
Should I Use Gnome to use Goblin, because MeeGo is using Gnome? Or.... what is problem make Goblin doesn't work?
Ubuntu :: Memory Leaking Process Causing Hang After Login / Sort It?
Jun 10, 2011I'm still pretty new to the linux scene but kubuntu has been a great alternative to ubuntu (unity, ugh) until now.
It only started happening since i started messing around with play on linux but i dont think their related. I dont think its a driver issue either as ive switched between proprietary and default to no avail.
Basically after i log in, it takes over 3-6 minutes getting slower and slower before finally getting back to regular speed. So after a few occurences i decided that immediately after startup i went to system monitor and sure enough;
There is a process title "akonadi_contact" that is slowly growing in memory. There are also multiple occurences of it (usually between 6 and 9). they keep growing usually to the 500000k mark in memory usage before turning gray (swap storage??) and then eventualy the end.
What is "akonadi_contact"
How do i stop this from happening.
Is this a memory leak?

May 4, 2010We switched from unix to linux and we have an old report that extracted data from a database, output to an ascii file and then sorted the results in the file based on different arguments. The report now blows up when it runs,and I can only guess it is because the options for sort on linux differ slightly from unix.For example, here is one of the commands issued from within the report app that ran on the old unix box:
if sort-sequence = "descending" then
'sort -t~" -f +3.0f -4.0 +5.0r -6.0 -f '
else
'sort -t~" +3.0f -4.0 +1.0f -2.0 -f'
I will eventually rewrite the report to store the data in a local table, but I can simply adjust the options to suit the requirments of linux. Basically, I need to know if this can be a quick fix for the short term.
Fedora Installation :: Fedora Won't Install Dual Boot / Sort It?
Jul 28, 2009I tried a number of times to install dual boot with Win2k. I keep getting errors at the stage of setting up the partition for the install. When I try to choose ext4 it says Fedora cannot be installed on a bootable drive, fix the problem. I don't see how to fix it...it does not say what to do or change.
I have had other linux installed in the same partition without a problem. What gives?
150GB drive for both OS's Separate drive for data, not involved in the install.

Fedora :: Can't Login Into The Root Account: It Returns Me Immediately To The Login Prompt?
Jan 27, 2010I just installed Fedora 12 on a laptop. I changed the default shell on the root account to /bin/tcsh and changed the runlevel to 3 and then rebooted. Now I can't login into the root account: it returns me immediately to the login prompt and I can't see any error message (the screen is cleared).Why is this happening?Can I boot into some sort of safe mode so I can undo my changes to the /etc/inittab and /etc/passwd file?I tried booting with a Live CD with the intention of mounting the filesystem and making the changes, but the new filesystem is a LVM and it won't let me mount it (or I don't know how to mount a Logical Volume).

Feb 15, 2010My computer was working this morning and both hard drives were working fine, then all of a sudden for about two hours I was stuck with this "problem", then after fumbling and moving and stablizing things, then Windows works? See below for details. I've finally reinstalled both hard drives, but the one with the Linux partition doesn't work: it says nothing is discovered on the disk. I can't login at the LUKS login after grub starts, therefore I can't get into Linux, but Windows works?! I used to be able to go directly into Grub when the computer starts, I forgot how to do that but it doesn't matter. If you need details I'd be glad to provide them. I just wondered why Linux doesn't work, but Windows does. I have Linux & Windows on two different separate hard drives

Jun 3, 2011yesterday I updated my fedora 13 to fedora 14 (on laptop) and today i cannot log in on user. It just go blank for a sec and is back to login.
At text console (alt+ctr+f2/f3) i enter my username and pass it give this for a sec and resets (clean) console
username: Name
password:
last used: [date]
login: no shell permission denied
i used unetbootin (fedora 14 netinstall to update) and later i updated 1,5G before reboot (did update that fix, forgot its name tho :s)
I would most likely reinstall everything, but i have some work at laptop and as death-line is near, i would prefer to fix it if possible.

i have installed F13 on unused space, is there a way for me to access and fix it? or at least get some files from there?

Jun 12, 2010My fedora 12 laptop will no longer boot properly. i get my bios screen, then the fedora intro screen (with the f / infinity symbol on a blue background) after a brief blank screen, then i get a blank screen with a blinking cursor. i can type things but nothing happens when i do, and the computer never exits out of that screen.
is there anything i can do to correct this problem short of a reinstall? i really hate to lose some of the drivers i went to a lot of trouble to find and install as well as some software and some user files.
p.s.: the last thing i did before the problem was to use yum to install quite a few fonts (xorg-...) but it ran after that and i think even went through one reboot with no problems.

Jan 17, 2010Ok, so i just got fedora 12 all set up in Virtual Box and got the guest additions and stuff so i can have max screen res. I went to set up compiz following this site (google Using Compiz on Fedora 12 as Linux Guest in VirtualBox) installed dkms, rebooted and now after it loads the bar at the bottom that says fedora 12, it gives a blank black screen with a solid white line at the top like a c prompt curser. Whats the deal here? did dkms break my install or something? Its on a vm so no big loss but id still like to know.

Jan 8, 2009Who has successfully upgraded going from F7 x86_64 to F9 x86_64 using the yum approach? I have had about 0% success getting everything to work correctly doing a fresh install of F9. Everything works correctly in F7( sound, firefox/flash, networking, samba, etc ), so I figure that starting with something know to work and upgrading to F9 might be a better approach that starting with F9 and having it guess.

Jun 15, 2009I installed netatalk for Linux in Fedora 10. I managed to get the service starting correctly at every boot and from Linux side everything looks good. I even manged to tweak avahi-daemon to advertise my server on the network so would show in Finder sidebar (with a snazy tux icon). But when I try to connect to the server it asks me for username and password (as it should), but my password doesn't work. I changed my password, I even gave it a simple one to rule out possibility of "fat-finger"-ing. No success.
