Just got a VisionTek ATI Radeon HD2600Pro, which my Fedora 12 64-bit system seems to have no problem recognizing natively (though it is peculiar that it shows up in lspci as an a 'HD3600' instead of 2600), so things seemed fine ... til I tried to start X. To be thorough: I went from an nVidia Quadro NVS 285 in the system using drivers from rpmfusion, to this card in hopes of getting better graphics and compositing support. So I tried uninstalling the nVidia drivers and kmods, blacklisting radeon and radeonhd mods, installing the stock ATI driver straight from the ATI/AMD site (which included header compilation), and starting X ... no go. Then removed that, installed the OpenDrivers stuff ... still no good. Ended up removing all Xorg configuration (literally removing xorg.conf) and starting X with bare bones. And now X will indeed start up and go into my desktop environment (KDE), but as soon as I open more than a single application window, the system becomes virtually unusable, and compositing is completely out of the question.
Any advice for drivers/config/setup to get this working? Or do I need to go back to my crappy 128MB NVS card?
Configure desktop (Desktop - System Settings) --> Desktop Message indicates: Compositing is not supported on your system. Required X extensions (XComposite and XDamage) are not available.
I can't find XComposite or XDamage as a package to install with Software Management. code...
I'm trying to find out when QME2572 (Qlogic) card became support by the kernel. We have a RHEL 5.1 system that is moving to new hardware, however the kernel at this release doesn't support the new hardware, due to the Qlogic card change. I tired the Redhat KB and Bugzilla. Is there a Kernel change list etc I can search. Never really played around with the kernel too much so I'm just after some pointers for looking up this information. Offically its not supported until Redhat 5.3, I'm trying trying to research kernel info so I can tell the customer they have to upgrade.
I have installed Fedora 10 on my laptop, but I cannot start GUI at all. Besides, I cannot get sounds, either.... lspci gives me following infos: 00:11.5 Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. I'm thinking of installing Fedora 14 on my hp laptop, and need to know if this will support the Broadcom 4322AG wireless card it came with, will only probably use Fedora if the card is already recognized, or an easy gui install. This is the game changer between using fedora or linux mint for me

I am thinking about buying a new computer. It has ATI Radeon HD 3000 Graphics. Does Fedora 14 support ATI Radeon HD 3000 Graphicst? Will I have to install a driver and if so where would I download the driver?

Is there any kind rule of thumb as to what series of cards is supported best? Atm I'm watching a Geforce 7900 GT on ebay, is that a good choice as far 3D acceleration goes? Which card would you recommend to get the closest 3D support to Windows drivers?
P.S.: I'm going to play games with the card. I use PlayOnLinux, which works for a very high amount of my games, as long as I'd have 3D acceleration. Performance is irrelevant as long as it's higher than a Radeon X850XT.
I recently installed fedora 14 on my Asus laptop with Nvidia GEForce 130m Cuda Video card. I installed the nvidia drivers, but when I go to configure any sort of visual effects in systemsettings it says Code: Your hardware cannot support visual effects due to the following problem: The problem is that it gives no problems for me to fix! How can I find out what the issue is?

I was just curious for the ATI users out there that are running KDE on Fedora 14 have any of you experienced any performance issues? My systems desktop slows to a crawl when Kwin's compositing is enabled, however in KDE 4.4 there were no issues at all. My desktop I built is a rather modest build just for development nothing too High end on the machine, however KDE and it's effects surely should run. I also use xfce so I switched to that and gave up on KDE 4.5

I currently have an Atheros a5k 802.11g PCI card and I am looking to upgrade to 802.11n. Are there any cards that support the Atheros chipset (a9k) or something similar? I do have PCIe x16 available if I can go with that. Plus, I could go with an external USB 802.11n wireless adapter, but I'd rather prefer the internal card to save space. I don't mind any PCI/PCIe adapters taking up slots in my motherboard, although I might plan to upgrade to an ATX motherboard so I can have more slots available.

how is the support for multiple, two or more, monitors in ubuntu (10.04) when using a graphic cards from AMD(/ATI), for example the HD 5770. (Which I'm currently using). I know that DP is required to use three monitors on a regular card. But other than that, will it work? Am I to expect a lot of work to be able to get it working? Or will it simply be impossible? (And yes, I know that AMDs(/ATI) drivers aren't always the best... Although changing to a card from nvidia at this moment isn't possible)

I am looking to get a sound card to put in my HTPC that is running Ubuntu 10.04. I bought Auzentech x-plosion sound card that has spdif support but it does not work. Does anyone know of any card that will work or am I out of luck??
I'm a new Mandriva user,and have no clue about Linux system,but to be honest I don't want to use Windows product anymore. So I got the Mandriva 1 Spring Gnome,and installed it on my DELL Optiplex Desktop,works fine and very fast,therefore I decided to do the same with my Studio XPS 1640,but after I got a dark screen,so I used an external display(My TV) then realized that it doesn't support the video card on it ( ATI Radeon HD4670 ),and I don't know what to do.
I'm trying to boot an SD card on a notebook that does not have BIOS support for booting from the SD slot. Using various how-to's I've figured out how to add additional SD card modules to the initrd.img file on a bootable USB drive such that I can boot Linux installed on the SD card.
However, best I can tell, it loads the kernel and initrd.img from the USB and everything else from the SD card. What I really want is to load the necessary SD modules from the USB and then chainload the SD card such that whatever kernel is on the SD card is loaded instead. Is it possible to chainload to another bootable device after the kernel (with the SD module additions) has already been loaded?

Im just curious if theres a place were you can download Gallium with dx10/11 support for ubuntu that will work with an nvidia GTX 460 card. and abit of an explanation on what gallium actually is, im unsure if its a graphics driver or program.
I recently installed the XFCE spin of Debian (amd64) on my Lenovo L440. I tried installing it before, but apparently the 3.2 kernel that ships with Wheezy doesn't properly support the proprietary firmware for the wireless card, blah blah. So I wound up using Windows 8.1 for a bit, and then Fedora (boo). Anyway, with the wheezy-backports kernel (3.16.7-ckt4-3~bpo70+1) everything works like a charm. Everything, that is, apart from the sound card — the entire system is completely mute. Well, apart from the system beeper. I searched the forum and found another thread, but that guy was (for some reason) just running dwm — I figured XFCE might feature a more complete sound system. But maybe the output he gave will be useful in my case as well:

I am in the process of building a new desktop machine for work and fun. I am looking to run a undecided flavor of Linux (guessing Ubuntu) as my primary OS and several Windows installs with a Windows 7 install for .net development and gaming as virtualized environments.
From my previous experiences with virtualization software in Linux I was never able to find an application that offered descent video card support / graphic acceleration etc. to be capable of playing any games within one of the virtualized environments. And since I will be investing quite a bit of money into this system for gaming I would naturally want to find the best option available to achieve this setup.
So Onto my question: Is there any virtualization software available for Linux that has full video card support, graphic acceleration and capable of taking advantage of everything the video cards have to offer within the virtualized environments?
Or am I stuck with running Windows 7 as my primary OS and using virtualization for Linux and the other OS's?
Also I have no preference on open/closed source and price range would be up to $175.00 to support at least 3 virtualized environments.
