Fedora Hardware :: Which Card Recommend To Get The Closest 3D Support To Windows Drivers?

just posted the same question in a thread with no questions allowed. deleted the message and here is the question again: I'm looking into updating my videocard with something more Linux-compatible (read: NVidia
instead of ATI). Is there any kind rule of thumb as to what series of cards is supported best? Atm I'm watching a Geforce 7900 GT on ebay, is that a good choice as far 3D acceleration goes? Which card would you recommend to get the closest 3D support to Windows drivers?
P.S.: I'm going to play games with the card. I use PlayOnLinux, which works for a very high amount of my games, as long as I'd have 3D acceleration. Performance is irrelevant as long as it's higher than a Radeon X850XT.

For as long as I've used Linux I've had trouble getting my wireless connection to work properly. I've tried about 4 different cards and now I'm using D-Link DWL G510 which even says Linux supported on the box. It installed right out of the box and when I have a connection it is fast enough; not as fast as the other computers, laptops, tablets or phones but reasonably fast.
The connection is however unstable and I often have no connection at all. It very strange actually because as time goes it seems to get more unstable, both since boot-up and since fresh install. I'm tired of this and since we got a new router which support wireless N I can just as well get a new card. Can you recommend any? It needs to be able to handle WPA-encryption.

I'm using the latest Centos on an older IBM server which only has USB1.1 ports, it works great and is very reliable. I would really like to add a USB2.0 card to the system. Can anyone recommend a reliable PCI card which will work with Centos, preferably one which does not require any special drivers to be loaded.

I am in the process of building a new desktop machine for work and fun. I am looking to run a undecided flavor of Linux (guessing Ubuntu) as my primary OS and several Windows installs with a Windows 7 install for .net development and gaming as virtualized environments.
From my previous experiences with virtualization software in Linux I was never able to find an application that offered descent video card support / graphic acceleration etc. to be capable of playing any games within one of the virtualized environments. And since I will be investing quite a bit of money into this system for gaming I would naturally want to find the best option available to achieve this setup.
So Onto my question: Is there any virtualization software available for Linux that has full video card support, graphic acceleration and capable of taking advantage of everything the video cards have to offer within the virtualized environments?
Or am I stuck with running Windows 7 as my primary OS and using virtualization for Linux and the other OS's?
Also I have no preference on open/closed source and price range would be up to $175.00 to support at least 3 virtualized environments.

Can any recommend a PCIe video card for my AMD64 box?Looking for one which basically has a good working driver:
- can do dual head using DVI and VGA output.
- open source preferably, I've used the nvidia proprietary one before, was fine but kernel upgrades became a pain.
- passive heatsink so it's silent, doesn't need to be a fast card since my other two were both onboard graphics.
- driver can do KMS for nifty high res console.
- most typical features work, so Mplayer plays nicely and can scale to full screen etc. (xv output +/- accelerated decoding)
- even a bit of light 3D for openarena or compiz would be nice.
- don't mind buying second hand if they aren't available new
I've had a Nvidia 7050 on board which was ok, fast enough, but upgrading with the proprietary driver became painful, and that motherboard is dying a flaky death.
- The nouveau driver looked promising, but wasn't really in Debian at that stage. But I did once accidently boot a high res console while testing a brand new kernel (2.6.31 I think) and was blown away Currently got an ATI RS880 [Radeon HD 4200] on board which is fine, 2D is fast enough, but the open source driver isn't finished yet. It can't do dual head (horrible distortion and crashes), can't suspend to ram (freezes), Xvideo and any form of 3D acceleration are missing.

I've been struggling with getting my graphics card configured under a fresh install of F13. I have an ATI Radeon HD 5450 1GB DDR3 and when I run glxinfo this is the result:

What concerns me are the lines:

OpenGL renderer string: Software Rasterizer
If I try to enable Desktop Effects it tells me I have no 3D acceleration. So 3D acceleration not supported for this card using the open source, stock install drivers? I'd like to avoid the proprietary ATI ones if I can. Background on the video card here: [URL]. It's the cheap-o model in the HD 5XXX series and based on the article above it seems to be more of a beefed up version of the HD 4XXX chip design than a true HD5XXX series card.

I am new to linux. I install fedora 10 in text mode in my system. Because some drivers didn't support. I don't no know how to install supporting drivers. My system config. are Intel 945 mother board, 512 DDR2 RAM, 80GB IDE hard disk, P4 3GHz processor. When i try to install in graphics mode after disk checking i.e while anaconda is loading my monitor automatically turned off. So I recognized that problem with some driver. So I installed in text mode. Please tell me where do i get drivers for my system and how to install in my system. I don't have Internet connection for automatic installation using yum which was i found from linux forum so kindly tell me manual installation.

I'm trying to find out when QME2572 (Qlogic) card became support by the kernel. We have a RHEL 5.1 system that is moving to new hardware, however the kernel at this release doesn't support the new hardware, due to the Qlogic card change. I tired the Redhat KB and Bugzilla. Is there a Kernel change list etc I can search. Never really played around with the kernel too much so I'm just after some pointers for looking up this information. Offically its not supported until Redhat 5.3, I'm trying trying to research kernel info so I can tell the customer they have to upgrade.

Just got a VisionTek ATI Radeon HD2600Pro, which my Fedora 12 64-bit system seems to have no problem recognizing natively (though it is peculiar that it shows up in lspci as an a 'HD3600' instead of 2600), so things seemed fine ... til I tried to start X. To be thorough: I went from an nVidia Quadro NVS 285 in the system using drivers from rpmfusion, to this card in hopes of getting better graphics and compositing support. So I tried uninstalling the nVidia drivers and kmods, blacklisting radeon and radeonhd mods, installing the stock ATI driver straight from the ATI/AMD site (which included header compilation), and starting X ... no go. Then removed that, installed the OpenDrivers stuff ... still no good. Ended up removing all Xorg configuration (literally removing xorg.conf) and starting X with bare bones. And now X will indeed start up and go into my desktop environment (KDE), but as soon as I open more than a single application window, the system becomes virtually unusable, and compositing is completely out of the question.
Any advice for drivers/config/setup to get this working? Or do I need to go back to my crappy 128MB NVS card?

I have installed Fedora 10 on my laptop, but I cannot start GUI at all. Besides, I cannot get sounds, either.... lspci gives me following infos: 00:11.5 Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. I recently installed fedora 14 on my Asus laptop with Nvidia GEForce 130m Cuda Video card. I installed the nvidia drivers, but when I go to configure any sort of visual effects in systemsettings it says Code: Your hardware cannot support visual effects due to the following problem: The problem is that it gives no problems for me to fix! I have installed Fedora 8 on my laptop. My laptop has a " Network controller:
Broadcom Corporation BCM94311MCG wlan mini-PCI " wireless Card.
I want to get the wireless working. I did an 'lsmod' and I found that the modules for this card is not installed. I tried to start Network Manager, but network manager cannot connect to wireless but it cant. How and where can I get the drivers for this and how do I install those modules. My laptop is a Dell vostro 1400.

I am attempting to install a WLAN card driver but I'm having trouble with running "make". When I launch it it tells me I need to set the kernelpath, but my problem is that I have no idea where the kernel even is inside of fedora. I'm on Fedora 14.

I have been noticing that it was hard to set up my own NVidia video card, and alot of other people shared the same problem as I had. I have been experimenting with some things, and here's what I did to solve it.
It's fairly easy, anyone can do this. Read and follow these instructions:
Install all updates. Although it seems unimportant, it really is.
Go to [url] and follow the instructions to install the free and nonfree repositories
Go to System > Administration > Add/Remove Software
Search the following: nv
Click everything which has to do with NVidia. Do not check the checkboxes yet, but read the descriptions. If you've found your video card in the description, check the checkbox at the left of the title.
Install the drivers by clicking "Apply" at the bottom of your screen.
After installing, go to Applications > System Tools > nVidia Display Settings
Set the properties of your video card, such as TwinView or higher screen resolutions.
After you've set it up, click Apply to preview your settings. Change some settings if you like, and then click Apply when you're done. DO NOT EXIT YET!
Click "Save to X Confguration File, but do NOT save the file. Click "Show preview..." and copy the text in the preview.
Go to Applications > System Tools > Terminal and type "su". Press Enter and enter the root password.
Now type:

Select all of the text in the document and delete it. Then, paste the text of the "Save X Configuration" window into the text editor.
Exit out of the terminal.
Exit out of the nVidia Display Settings application. Do not save anything from this application.
Log out and log back in to see the changes.

I have Fedora11 running in my machine and it has no LAN port (RJ-45). I have a wireless PCMCIA card.The model of the wireless card is NL-2511CD EXT2(ETSI).When I insert that card to the PCMCIA slot a window pops up and ask for a WEP key. My wireless router is configured with WPA but above pop-up has no WPA option. I suspect my fedora installation does not have the necessary driver for my wireless card.I want to install that driver. I can transfer that file to the machine via thumb drive since it has no network connection yet. How do I install this? Please refer below images as I'm still a newbie at linux.

A few years back I gave linux a try. It was fun but eventually I dropped it because simple tasks like installing software were always a practice in goose hunting and copy/paste command marathons. I am trying again to get fedora up and going. Thinking many of the old methods would be cleaned up by now. I was trying to install nvidia drivers for my 8800 card.
I download the *.run file and it tells me I need to disable "X...etc" so I init 3 to the command prompt and run the *.run file there. Then the installer says.... "hey buddy.. you need gcc to make this work". ok.. I type init 5 to get back to the internet browser. So I search about google for a few moments and then find the yum command for getting gcc installed. Run the gcc and again... init 3 to get back to the command prompt and run the *.rn file for the nvidia drivers. This time the installer says... "hey man... you need the kernel source tree".
