View 3 RepliesI recently installed my first distro, Gnome Ubuntu Linux 10.04 via WUBI dual-booting alongside my Windows. I decided to try the other desktop environments. So I installed Kubuntu-Desktop (KDE) and Xubuntu-Desktop (XFCE) using Synaptic Package Manager.
However, Kubuntu KDE changed the boot splash screen into a from the default Ubuntu one, to the Kubuntu one. Also Xubuntu XFCE changed the log-in screen to the Xubuntu one. I DO NOT want these changes. I just wanted Normal Ubuntu-branded Ubuntu Linux with the option of logging in into the desktop environment of my choice.
I downloaded some software yesterday from the ubuntu rep. This morning my screen has the bottom part of in black there are the KDE docky ,firefox ,terminal & rhythmbox icons ,so is the taskbar..but the wallpaper is cut up ,4cm off. I have noticed that the splash screens res has changed too. It's sharper (smaller). The browser as a consequence is also half lit & having noscript in the bottom without it being visible is a problem. Why has this happened & how can I fix it. The last working config, well that's somewhere else.

As you can see, it's a scrambled picture of my Windows desktop. This happens with every other version of Ubuntu also.
I'm running a 64-bit PC and I don't wanna waste another CD or use a USB to install, because I actually progress further in my efforts whenever I use Wubi.
I received the Ubuntu CD by mail the other day and tried to install a dual boot with it. I first tried it out by running from the CD and the first problem I had was the screen froze after the splash screen. So I lurked around for a bit and found out that I can press any key on the screen with the keyboard and person to get to a different screen. At this screen I entered "F6" and then entered "nomodeset", this allowed me to pass the splash screen.
Next, I got into Unbuntu but I found out that the keyboard and mouse weren't working, so I lurked again and found out that I have to enter "noacpi" (sorry if I got that wrong, I forgot the name ). I ran by CD once more and everything worked, so I decided to finally install it next to my Vista. However, after installing it goes straight to the splash screen, and the freezing happens again. The screen where the keyboard and the person are not showing up so I have no idea how add the "nomodeset" and "noacpi". So my question is, how do I get to the screen where I can add both those things? Also, is there a way to add it permanently so I don't have to keep pressing F6?
I have been running 10.04 quite successfully, when I upgraded to 10.10, I have a problem with the newer kernels. If I let it boot into the latest one 2.6.35-23, I get the Ubuntu 10.10 splash screen for a second then a blank screen, same with 2.6.35-22. I have to run with 32-25 to get it to load the gui.
I have an AMD Sempron 2800, 1.6GHz pc, but I'm not sure if it's running 64bit.
If I re-install Grub 2 from the live CD should that reset all the personalisations such as as splash screen and colours in the Grub splash to default? In my case they are not resetting. I would expect them to revert to the default black/white you get when initially installing the OS. the Grub timeout to be a lot less than its supposed to be? e.g. the default timeout setting of 5 seconds is more like 2 or 3 in reality, and when I set my prefered value to 2 seconds it results in being about 1/4 sec or so.
View 9 Replies View RelatedSince updating my graphics driver on ubuntu 10.10, My splash screen has been inconsistant and messed up. Sometimes ill get random command lines mixed in with the usual splash, sometimes the splash wont show and it will just be black till the desktop appears, sometimes it flashes on and off. I originally tried fixing the resolution and just made the problem worse. Then I tried installing a new splash via gnome-look.org, but it just made my shut-down splash blank and didnt effect my splash at startup. I just want the original splash that ubuntu is supposed to have.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm running 64 bit Ubuntu, and on the start-up after I pass the GRUB it goes blank for a minute then briefly shows the splash for 5-10 secs and then jumps to the login screen. Also the screen is offset by about 10-15 pixels but from the login screen onwards it is centred. (It's also like this for if I'm in recovery mode)
How do I fix this and Im wondering if it is a hardware problem?
I recently installed Ubuntu Studio and after an update the standard Plymouth splash screen began to show. I tried changing it back via the "sudo update-alternatives --config default.plymouth" method but I am getting a blue kbuntu splash screen instead of the ubuntu studio splash.
View 1 Replies View RelatedToday I wanted to get rid of ugly GRUB and installed GRUB. I really like it, but there is one annoyance - I used these tips:URL...To have a Splash screen in Ubuntu in full 1680x1050 32-bit, and it worked perfectly. But when I installed BURG in the place of GRUB, I have 640x480 ugly boot splash as I had in the very beginning.Repeating the steps doesn't seem to help. What should I do?I should note that I easily changed BURG's resolution to 1680x1050 using 'R' while in BURG. 640x480 only applies to Splash after I choose Ubuntu.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm running Kubuntu, but after trying an Ubuntu tool to help configure Grub, my boot up plash screen (xsplash? My card isn't KMS compliant, so I'm not using Plymouth) now shows the Ubuntu splash.
Anyone know how to switch which boot splash is used back?
I recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my laptop (clean install, not upgrade), and when I turn my computer on, I get a black screen instead of the purple "Ubuntu" screen before my system logs on. When I log off, I get the purple "Ubuntu" screen, but not when I log on.
View 6 Replies View RelatedClean install on dell d400 laptop, worked fine with 9.10 but 10.04 gets past the stick man then after several minutes with the red/ white buttons a quick flash of colour on the screen and then nothing, just a dead PC.
Have tries alternative F6 and also i915.modeset=1 and 0 but no change. Pre release 10.04 worked fine just a problem with the official release
I have been trying to install ubuntu for a few days. After I select install on the first screen using live it will switch over to the UBUNTU splash screen. I can hear the CD drive and that hard drive working for about 45 seconds to a minute then nothing. It will just sit there on the splash screen for as long as I let it. By let it i mean hours. I and installing it on a Toshiba laptop with 1.6 ghz centrino processor, 160 gb hard drive, and 2.5 gigs of ram.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI upgraded a week or so ago to 10.04, and everything was working fine. Then suddenly a few days ago the computer froze at the splash screen on startup. Thinking it was just some sort of neurotic, temporary issue, I restart again, but no luck -- same problem.
In terms of what I changed before the problem happened, I don't recall changing any system settings. On possibility is my changing things to skip the login screen and go strait to my account, but I believe I had done that a few shutdown/restarts before.
The new splash screen would fly by in two shakes without, the dots moving left to right.And I was looking at more blackness than purple. So what I did was this without installing a slower uvesa v86d update. I used that as a reference point instead. This is what me Grub2 looks like: /etc/default/grub
Code:
GRUB_DEFAULT=2
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=true
GRUB_TIMEOUT=10
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian`
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"

I recently bought a new laptop with an ATI Mobility Radeon 5470HD graphics card in it and installed ubuntu. Everything works just fine, but at the startup, no plymouth splash screen comes up, just a black screen with a white dash...

I can not get ubuntu to install on my workstation. I have the 64-bit cd (am currently trying the 32-bit cd with similar results) and it won't install. I get to the ubuntu splash screen with the 5 dots underneath it and it looks like it's trying to run for several minutes. After the several minutes, the screen simply goes black and I can't do anything.
View 8 Replies View RelatedYesterday I booted into the Ubuntu 10.10 CD, and hit the Try Ubuntu button. Ubuntu booted fine from the CD, and after trying it for a few minutes, I decided to install it.
I already had (and still have) Windows 7 installed, so, using the Ubuntu Installer, I shrinked the C (system) partition of Windows by roughly 14 GBs. 10 of which used for Ubuntu itself, and the other 4 as Swap Area.
Installation went fine, and I was asked to reboot - and so I did. However, upon restarting, I was 'welcomed' by a stuck, purple splash screen. So I used Recovery Mode, and updated my Ubuntu. That didn't change anything. I rebooted, started Ubuntu without the "splash quiet" commands, and instead used the "nomodeset" command. I logged in my Ubuntu user, and ran the StartX command. It didn't work, and I was given a few errors, including "no screen found", "Fatal server error", and something along the lines of "no NVIDIA module found (...,0)".
So what's wrong with the NVIDIA driver, really?
I have clean installed Ubuntu 10.04. After every 10 min. or so of not moving the mouse, I am asked for my password. How can I extend those short min. to say an hour?? Also, at startup I do not have a splash screen only a black screen for about 1min or so. How can I watch the splash screen at startup?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell Latitude E5500. For some time I've been installing different distros on it to find which is best suited for my needs. I've tried Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Mandriva, openSuSE, Fedora, and several others. So far, openSuSE takes the cake in terms of what I need, speed, usability, etc. However, I have a soft spot for Fedora and I'm trying so hard to make things work, but I'm kind of at the end of the road unless you guys have some suggestions.
I was in the IRC chat for Fedora asking around, and one user was kind enough to point me in this direction, which made sense as to why I was having issues.
[url]
I was having mixed results, but I had also installed from a Fedora KDE LiveCD. I decided I'd try the full DVD release of Fedora 12 64 bit, so I installed it this evening.
To my disappointment, even the nomodeset parameter does nothing. I get to the blue screen where there's some kind of logo in the center that fills in with white. After it fills in, an F appears. That's where it stops. It just goes no further. Further adding to the confusion is the fact that the fix lists a kernel there, indicating (to me at least) that the kernel listed is when a fix was deployed. I have a newer kernel than that, and despite that I still have these issues.
So needless to say, I'm using my laptop as testing grounds to plop a different distro than Ubuntu on my laptop and 2 servers full time. I really want to make Fedora work, but at the same time I have to use what works for me. Not being able to boot and log in is kind of a big deal. :P
Is there anything I can do or try? I want to keep the OS's I run all the same, so if Fedora 12 bombs out on this laptop, it has no chance on the other servers I plan to run at work. So far openSuSE is running without a hitch but I'd really like to give Fedora 12 a chance....
just upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04LTS and upon first reboot it gets stuck at the splash screen.. it just keeps loading over and over, nothing happens.I don't have the liveCD as I just did the download from the internet via Synaptic Softwarethis is what I tried:hit ESC when GRUB menu loads.. tried to hit "e" on the boot option and nothing happens.. I was told changing quite splash to nomodeset would fix it but it doesn't even say quiet splash, unless someone wants to walk me through it.I'm soo frustrated, I have tons of e-mails and documents that I need to save.is there a fix to get me back in just so I can copy my emails and docs and do a fresh install?

I *just* decided to upgrade to 10.04.1.
bad idea to mess w/ a working system.
Anyway my system won't go past the "ubuntu" splash screen with the five dots. The dots just keep scrolling from white to red over and over.
I can ssh into the box.
Top shows "plymouthd" is running, about 5% CPU and stuck.
I have recently installed ubuntu on a Dell Inspiron 8500. It works well but the startup volume on the ubuntu splash screen is extremely loud. How do I adjust this. System volume does not seem to help.
