OpenSUSE Hardware :: ATI Catalyst 9.12 -- X Blank Screen / Hard Lock Keyboard Lights Don't Toggle?

Dec 19, 2009

I installed the new 9.12 cat drivers in the usual way (init 3; rpm -e the old drivers; generate new rpm; rpm -i new drivers; init 5), but instead of starting like I expected, I got a blank screen and what appeared to be a hard lock (keyboard lights don't toggle, Ctrl + Alt + Backspace and Ctrl + Alt + F1 don't do anything).

I switched back to radeonhd, but I'd like to get the proprietary drivers working if possible.

The usual listings

Code:
[nathan@ebisu ~] lsmod | grep fgl
fglrx 2323096 0
[nathan@ebisu ~] modprobe -l | grep fgl
extra/fglrx.ko
Looks like the driver loaded OK...
Code:
[nathan@ebisu ~] dmesg | grep fgl

Ubuntu :: 10.4 Freezing \ When Tried To Turn It On Some Of The Lights Came On And The Caps Lock And Num Lock Started Flashing?

Sep 14, 2010

I have a HP Pavilion dv4 that is 4 months old. Yesterday it suddenly seemed to restart then once I logged in it turned off. When I tried to turn it on some of the lights came on and the caps lock and num lock started flashing. Since then I have not been able to get it to work correctly. It once seemed to turn on but died again after the login window.I tried to use my live cd but the same thing happened. It started loading once, but then shut down again. Every other time it stayed dead minus the lights

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.1 Deactivates USB Keyboard - Lights Off

Feb 5, 2010

I used to work with a PS/2 keyboard. But one key of it has a malfunction. So I bought a new Cherry USB Keyboard. GRUB and the BIOS like it - no doubt, the keyboard itself is OK. But as soon as SUSE 11.1 takes control during boot, the lights of the keyboard are switched off, and the keyboard is deactivated. I even tried to re-install 11.1 from DVD with the USB keyboard plugged in alone - in vain. With the PS/2 keyboard I didn't ever had any such problems. I run a system with a Pentium III (Katmai) on an Intel RC440BX Motherboard.

Ubuntu Installation :: Blank Screen / Errors Trying To Upgrade ATI Catalyst Drivers

Jan 29, 2010

So xorg was acting up, and I went into the Hardware Drivers menu to see if the driver had a problem. The driver was disabled, and could not be activated. I downloaded the new ATI driver. I uninstalled the old one, installed the new one, and ran the config step just like it specifies in the install instructions. Upon reboot, I got a blank screen instead of the login screen.I managed to drop back to the command line and uninstall the driver, so now I'm stuck in ubuntu with one monitor instead of 2.

I'm going to attempt to revert to the old ATI driver (which I still have in my home dir), but I wanted to be sure to get this into the forums before I ruined my GUI again.

Ubuntu :: Natty Login - With Ati Catalyst Control Center - Screen Goes Blank ?

Sep 1, 2011

I just did a fresh install of natty, installed a few programs along with the ati catalyst control center.

I am having serious login issues, here is what I do:

I am at the login screen right from start-up, type in username and passward and hit enter, screen goes blank, it appears I am logging in, ubuntu plays a sound and puts me back at the login screen. I do not get an "Authentication Failed" error like I would expect. Unable to login as myself or as root.

However, I am able to login if I select the "safe mode," I am not able to login under the normal mode or the ubuntu classic modes.

I suspect that this issue has to do with the ati proprietary drivers, after playing with the settings for a while in safe mode I am now able to login to the normal natty mode without any apparent issues.

Here is what I changed in ati catalyst control center to boot into natty mode:

I disabled the Xinerama and Tear Free options.

Under the 3D settings, I selected the "override application setting" for all the 3D settings I could.

I believe I still have some display issues as I am unable to drag windows from one display to another, my mouse is able to move just fine across displays though.

I also found that enabling Xinerama prevented me from logging into the ubuntu and ubuntu classic modes, but I was able to login to the ubuntu with no effects mode.

Ubuntu :: 11.04 Hanging After Going Blank In After The Lock Screen?

Jul 7, 2011

Ubuntu hangs after the lock screen menu disappears. When it goes into the lock screen and the menu disappears Ubuntu stops responding. Moving My mouse or typing on my keyboard doesn't help. The password screen does not appear. It does not appear to be this bug: as it stops responding within a second of the screen disappearing. I have confirmed that nothing is wrong with my monitor or video card using my brothers setup.

Ubuntu :: Freezes Randomly, Flashing Keyboard Lights

Apr 5, 2011

I've been an Ubuntu user for a couple of years. I have a Sony Vaio VPCCW-2S1E laptop, with an Nvidia GT330M graphics card. I had worked with Karmic, Lucid and Maverick on this laptop without any problems, until recently, when I had to re-install Maverick.

Now my laptop keeps freezing entirely (no response whatsoever), with two keyboard lights blinking. This happens randomly: sometimes I'm doing something, other times the laptop's completely idle. Sometimes the screen display turns off on freezing, other times not.

Ubuntu :: Commands - Sudo Kill -9 -1 - Screen Became Blank - Keyboard Not Responding

Jul 11, 2011

I am learning linux commands. I just wanted to see what happens when I type

Code:

The screen became blank. Keyboard was not responding. I couldn't do a proper shutdown. I switched off computer by pulling out the plug. When I restarted, I heard a series of beeps (approximately 10 beeps). Then I was dropped to the grub prompt. The problem now is I can not type anything into the grub prompt, because the character 'c' is continously printed across the screen like this:

Code:

I couldn't stop the character 'c' from printing (I tried pressing Esc, Ctrl+C)

The solution is easy. I can reinstall grub from a livecd. Or even reinstalling the entire operating system wouldn't take more than 30 minutes. But I want to know:

1) What exactly happened to grub? What stage does this error belong to (1, 1.5 or 2)? What is the error number?

2) How can running "sudo kill -9 -1" affect grub?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Getting Keyboard To Toggle Between KVM Switch Inputs?

Feb 14, 2010

I'm using an IOGEAR KVM Switch to switch between my newly built PC and Xbox 360. I've been using it for a while on my 360 with no problems, but to switch inputs you have to use a hotkey on a keyboard that is connected to the KVM switch (there is no button on the KVM switch to toggle between inputs). My KVM switch is compatible with Linux, but each time I plug in my Logitech Wired Wave keyboard into my KVM switch and use the hotkey it fails to switch the input. The hotkey is the Scroll Lock key on the keyboard, and the Logitech Wired Wave keyboard doesn't have a key dedicated to that function.

So I use the key combo for Scroll Lock, which is Fn + Pause/Break. I haven't mapped out all the keys on this keyboard yet, but I figured it should already be mapped out, since all the other basic keyboard keys are working. I managed to switch the toggle key from tapping the Scroll Lock key (combo) twice to tapping the Control key twice, after finally figuring out the manual's long and convoluted key combinations to change the input toggle key setting. If anyone else encounters this problem I would direct you to the Page 11 of the product manual, which is available at the product page linked to above.

I tried the following:* I looked in the keyboard shortcuts settings page and didn't see an option for screen locking* I tried right-clicking on the screen lock button on the panel and setting the shortcut, but that doesn't seem to have taken effect* I googled and searched this forum, but no luckThe default key combo seems to be Ctrl + Alt + L, which works, but I have years of muscle memory for pressing Meta + L, so I'd like to preserve that if possible

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Full-Screen Video Streaming Lock-up

Oct 15, 2010

When I play a video web stream full-screen, the image randomly freezes. I can still move the mouse and hear the audio, but I can't click on anything, and I can't get out of full-screen. No keyboard commands that I know work, and so I end up having to hold down the power button to kill the machine.

This didn't happen in Ubuntu, so I'm pretty sure it's not a hardware issue. And I changed the power management settings to do nothing, but it still happens. So, I don't know what the deal is. Should I try a different flash player (I have the adobe player as default)?

OpenSUSE :: Disabling Screen Lock / Enable Display Power Management?

Sep 14, 2009

I am a brand new user coming from the MS environment. My impression of openSUSE is that it is like moving into a new house that is well built but the rooms are full of half-constructed self-assembly furniture and appliances without any specific instructions. Nor is it clear which does what and whether all are needed or not. There is a town hall down the road where fellow homeowners gather to discuss what each has managed to deduce about putting their own furniture together. The town hall has a sort of library where thousands of pieces of paper with instructions are stored in an ad-hoc filing system

My latest problem is that I have created a screensaver via the "Configure Desktop" application and set "Enable display power management" and set some timeouts. However, I seem to be asked for a password to unlock the screen when I come back to my computer. I have spent 2 hours trying to find the place where I can disable screen password locking but to no avail. I am perplexed and frustrated at how such an obvious function is so ****ed hard to configure. This is the impression I am getting of Linux in general - it is novice user-hostile and badly organised.

OpenSUSE Install :: Seamless Mount Of Encrypted Disks And New Session Creation After Each Screen Lock?

Sep 8, 2011

I installed openSUSE 11.4 on HP elitebook 2560p few days ago (using KDE live CD). In general system is working fine, but steel I cannot resolve couple of really annoying issues: 1. I've created encrypted partitions for swap and home during OS installation. As result the system keep asking for passwords for each of encrypted partitions before show login screen. That leads to situation when I have to type 3 passwords during each boot/reboot. I was using the same configuration (swap and home were encrypted) on Ubuntu 11.04 and there both encrypted partitions were mount automatically with no password typing after login to the system. Could you please tell how I can configure the same behavior on openSUSE 11.4 ?

2. I've enabled auto screen lock after 5 mins being inactive. As result when I going back to laptop and to unlock the screen the system shows login screen (default login screen with user selection). But when user and password filled in I click login it creates entire new KDE session. Therefore all staff that was open before screen lock is gone. However old session is still in the system (it appears in output from 'w' command).
