Debian :: Use Any USB Wireless Adapter For Lenny On A PC?
Apr 11, 2010I want to use a USB wireless dongle/adapter on my PC that has Lenny installed.
Are there issues with drivers/firmware that I need to be aware of or can I use a generic one?

I just installed debian lenny. I'm looking forward to getting some work done with it, and I'm learning loads. When I was installing it, the GUI screen showed me three network interfaces, so I chose wlan0, the wireless card, so it did pick it up?
I tried to configure it with the necessary information (I wrote it down on a pad) but it still wouldn't configure, so I said, continue with the install and do it later. When I got to the desktop I added a new network to in network manager and set the ESSID and password, but still nothing. Even a list of other networks don't show up.
So what do I have to do to get this working? Here are the stats:
Atheros Communications Inc. LAN Express AE IEEE 802.11g PCI-E adaptor.
After running wireless for years my system crashed, I've had to re install lenny and now what ever I try I can't get the wireless to work. I'm running Lenny, kernel 2.6.26-2-686 but when I start up it doesn't seem to be able to start the wireless, whatever I do from gnome wireless tools,
dmesg | grep -i iwl
shows this

I have been Linux user(Ubuntu)for about 3 years since my switching from Windows. Although I did not have any complain against it, I wanted to try Debian Lenny. I have already partitioned my disk and installed Debian. Everything worked fine according to my expectations except for one thing: wireless.I tried different things to get it works without result. The light indicator of my computer seems to be working but the Network Manager does not detect any signal. In Ubuntu the wireless is detected automatically even using the Live CD.
View 1 Replies View Relatedtonight my laptop with debian installed is no longer reading my wireless card. It has been working for quite some time and I really have no clue as to why it stopped. I did install some updates today, but they seemed pretty minimal. I got the card to work following the same thing I did to get it to work in ubuntu which can be found URL...So what can I do to figure out why it stopped recognizing it or to fix it?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm running Debian Lenny. I want to get a wireless card working. Spent ages trying to get my betgear WG111T wireless dongle to work with ndiswrapper with no luck so I'm going to fork out for a wireless card. I've googled extensively but haven't really found a satisfactory answer. Is there a wireless card/chipset that I can count on working fairly easily or even better out of the box with Lenny?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI currently know next to nothing about networks in Linux (yes I am working on that). I have just brought a Asus n13 wireless adapter after failing to get my laptop wireless working. I am using the 2.6.32-5 Debian squeeze kernel. The device connected once after I did the following:
apt-get update
modprobe rt2870sta
iwconfig
ifconfig wlan0 up
The device connected to wifi and was working fine. I then shutdown and rebooted to see if it would automatically connect on start up and now, although nothing seems to have changed and even after I repeated the steps above it did not connect. The network manager applet as well as listing the asus adapter(as ralink 802.11 WLAN) lists a Texas instruments PCI1410 pc card cardbus controller which i didn't before.

I recently bought a new Acer Aspire and installed Lenny, I can get a wired network/internet connection however not a wireless connection. I use wicd. Bluetooth doesn't work either though I suspect that it might be the same issue.
Don't know if it helps however when I tpye iwconfig I get:

Get my Tenda 311U Wireless USB working with my custom Debian LXDE system (Refer to signature for more)? When I insert the USB adapter nothing happens. PCManFM file manager does not even detect it. I tried squeeze yesterday on my virtual machine and it has 4.6 and seem not to have that bug, RAM usage is static(yes it still works when i write this and have memory usage 34492k, which is not changing for an hours of usage already), also 4.6 is MUCH better than 4.4.
i already tried adding squeeze to "sources.list" but i can see too many dependencies which should be upgraded if i install 4.6, i'm beginning to afraid it can crash entire GUI(or entire system, i can see there is libc6 required to be updated).

I recently reformatted and dual partitioned to both Windows 7 as well as ubuntu 10.10. Loading works fine and Windows 7 is 100% operational. I cannot seem to get my wireless network adapter to be read by Ubuntus 'Windows Wireless Drivers' gui. Here are the steps that I have done THUS far, to make sure that we are all on the right path. Before I go any further, my wireless network adapter is an old school WUSB11 Linksys Wireless Network Adapter (running version 2.6).
1) Downloaded and installed "ndiswrapper" from ubuntu's main website. I downloaded the common, utils and ndisgtk files and installed them accordingly.
2) I extracted these three files to the desktop of Ubuntu and accessed the terminal page.
3) From terminal I typed "cd Desktop" to change the directory to the desktop.
4) Next, I typed in "Sudo dpkg -i ndiswrapper-common_1.54-2ubuntu1_all.deb
Sudo dpkg -i ndiswrapper-utils-1.9_1.54-2ubuntu1_i386.deb
Sudo dpkg -i ndisgtk_0.8.5-1_i386.deb"
5) This installed Windows Wireless Drivers gui successfully and I can access it.
6) I have downloaded the driver files for the adapter from the cisco website and searched them for the required files needed.
7) After extracting the .INF file from the "Drivers" directory named "NETUSB.SYS" (I wasn't sure if the other associated files within the same folder needed to be present together with NETUSB so I moved everything to the desktop) I typed in "sudo ndiswrapper -i NETUSB.inf". After accessing the Windows Wireless Drivers gui I have noticed that the 'netusb' driver is present yet under it, the system states "Hardware present: No". This leads me to believe that maybe I installed incorrectly or my "fireware?" is not present? I was reading through the installation guide posted on the ubuntu website that in addition to the .INF file we also need the BIN file(s)? and SYS file(s)?.. The folder with the drivers for my adapter contains a BIN file but it is not within the "Drivers" section of the folder.
9) Upon mousing over the network Icon naturally my hardware is still not present.
10) From what I gather after the system finds the hardware I am to write into the terminal
