Debian :: Can't Install New Kernel For Some Reason
Aug 20, 2011
i was compiling and installing the new linux kernel for my debian box, i ran the commands
# make oldconfig
# make clean
# make DEB_PKGVERSION=custom.3.0 deb-pkg
# cd ..
# dpkg -i *.deb
i tried to install the new kernel which was made into debian packages ready to be installed and after i ran that last command this is what came up
dpkg: error processing linux-firmware-image_custom.3.0_amd64.deb (--install):
package architecture (amd64) does not match system (i386)
dpkg: error processing linux-headers-3.0.3_custom.3.0_amd64.deb (--install):
package architecture (amd64) does not match system (i386)
[Code]....
where do i make this work, my architecture is an amd64 but for some reason it's only going to install this kernel on a i386 system.

I've been using Fedora 12 for about a month, and i'm very happy with it. Even tough, there's only one thing that worries me, and is giving me problems at the same time. I'm getting an error from: syslog@localhost that says: kernel:Uhhuh. NMI received for unknown reason b1 on CPU 0 kernel: Dazed and confused, but trying to continue. Kernel: seems to be a problem, likely on the PCI Bus
I'm not able to reproduce the problem every time i want, but, sometimes happens when i activate the snow effect combined with the cube effect, using kwin. My computer and OS specifications are: Pentium IV HT(disabled) Nvidia Geforce 8400gs 2 Gb Ram DDR2 (1xGB, 2x512) Hard Drives: 2x80GB Using Fedora 12, KDE 4.4.1, with Nvidia privative drivers, nouveau disabled

I'm trying to migrate from Ubuntu to OpenSUSE but for some reason I can't get the install to work. I've tried installing the GNOME live CD both from a CD and a USB but after I select installation it goes to the loading screen for a few seconds and then the screen goes black and it stays like that till I reboot. Is it a problem with my hardware or something or did something miss-write when I burned the CD/USB?

I'm trying to install Debian 6 on a dell c510, but it won't install Grub for some reason. Since that is necessary to boot Linux, what do you suggest as an alternative?

I was updating grub and for some reason the system hanged. Going to a tty did not solve any problems. At the end I had to do a hard reboot and came up with the following on the grub boot
reloc offset is out of segment Entering rescue mode grub rescue >
Googling for the above I landed on this page.
[URL]
While I'm going to try the later part, is there anything else I need to know about ?
Didn't have to do much, took the the Squeeze 6.10.a DVD, asked it to run into rescue mode and then did grub-install giving the MBR (hd0) as the place to be. Things worked nice after that.
Upon booting had to run
dpkg --configure -a
and it updated grub to 1.99-5 among other updates. Did not know that Squeeze had a rescue method as well (just like Ubuntu live CDs have). Now just have to wait for Debian to get Live CD/DVD as default

I use Sysv-rc-conf to turn on/off services. I initially turned off cups (I'm pretty sure it was on by default) using this method, but now I have turned it back on again, it won't start at boot. I have to start it manually each session. I've probably missed something but here goes anyway,
spoovy@dandelion:/etc/rc5.d$ pwd
/etc/rc5.d
spoovy@dandelion:/etc/rc5.d$ ll
[code]....

My hp does not want to start X for some reason. I have so many errors. I made an account to just see this problem be fixed. Now when I type "startx" I get back, "bash: /usr/bin/startx no such file in directory". I have to use GRUB due to the fact I forgot my login. Although, I do remember my password.

I just want to see if anyone else is having problems connecting to networks, wifi or wired. For some reason, I can see both wired and wireless networks available but when I try to connect, it times out. I updated a couple of days ago and suddenly started having problems today. Anyone else having the same problem?I have only tried the router and repeater I have to connect to. My other computers are working just fine. One is actually running as a Debian server with no GUI (which I do not update as often). The other is a Mac.

I'm somewhat familiar with Ubuntu (familiar but not sharp!) but have never tried Debian OS until now. I've installed Debian 5 64bit as a guest on a Mac host. I'm impressed how smooth the install went; even installing VB Guest Additions went smoothly. But, I get a "Your system had a kernel failure" error after booting. I have searched the forum & didn't find this error. Everything seems to work okay but is there an update that isn't showing in the Update Manager? Could this have something to do with VirtualBox 3.1.4?

Is there any way to get libmp3lame to work with ffmpeg without me having to completely recompile ffmpeg? I have managed to get video capture working (huffyuv didn't work for some reason) and this is my command:ffmpeg -f alsa -ac 2 -i hw:0,0 -f x11grab -r 25 -s hd1080 -i :0.0 -vcodec libx264 -vpre lossless_ultrafast -threads 0 -vf 'scale=-1:720' -sameq out.avi
There are so many answers and questions all over the place I can't even tell which package is actually causing the problem... (libmp3lame0? ffmpeg? libavcodec*?)

I want to install (or compile myself) a previous kernel release (2.6.31.13). Where can I get it?
I mean a Debian Kernel with all your patches etc.
I'm using Debian Unstable. I just noticed that it was the quickest kernel (well, maybe for me only and my hardware).

After a large update of software I can nolonger open Squeeze. I get past the grub screen however before the gdm starts up the screen goes blank and stays that way. I have only one kernel showing on the grub screen.
I tried in Recovery Mode: Ctrl+Alt +F keys with effect and startx returns a blank screen, this is why I though to try loading another kernel to see if that helps. I'm using a Acer Laptop.
My question is: Is it possible while in Recovery Mode to load/install another kernel os that when I get back to the grub screen I have another kernel to try to boot into?

I know from a myriad of posts on these forums that Ubuntu is more bleeding edge than Debian Testing. Since, Debian'w own kernel is misbehaving rejecting my video chip (i915), I am tempted to install Ubuntu's kernel in Wheeze.
So, the golden question is: Is it logical and feasible to install Ubuntu's kernel in Wheezy? Wheezy's kernel is 2.6.38.

We have a Dell 1850 with Debian with 2.4.18 kernel running some critical applications, now the issue is we need to upgrade the memory to 8 GB but the memory is detected by the bios itself, Operating system is not able to detect it, it is showing 3096MB of memory,
After a lot of googling and the artical in linux.com/archive/articles/119287 :: Got more than a gig of RAM and 32-bit Linux? Here's how to use it i came to know the solution i.e
1)I need to install the Bigmem-kernel to detect the ram more than 4Gb,
2) or change some kernel parameters in configuration file and rebuild the kernel
Is there any another solution for this to update operating system to detect the more RAM

I've a problem running jessie on a XEN supervisor; my running kernel and the installed kernel image differ, because the host system forces the kernel at boot time. Current loaded kernel is
Code:
Select all$ uname -r
3.18.12
But I'm not able to install this version from the standard repository.
Code:
Select all# apt-cache search linux-image
linux-headers-3.16.0-4-amd64 - Header-Dateien für Linux 3.16.0-4-amd64
linux-image-3.16.0-4-amd64 - Linux 3.16 für 64-Bit-PCs
linux-image-3.16.0-4-amd64-dbg - Debugging symbols for Linux 3.16.0-4-amd64
linux-image-amd64 - Linux for 64-bit PCs (meta-package)
linux-image-amd64-dbg - Debugging symbols for Linux amd64 configuration (meta-package)
nvidia-kernel-3.16.0-4-amd64 - NVIDIA binary kernel module for Linux 3.16.0-4-amd64
linux-image-2.6.32-5-xen-amd64 - Linux 2.6.32 for 64-bit PCs, Xen dom0 support
Now I'm facing issues loading kernel modules for iptables, because the module path does not exist. Is there an easy way to install a proper kernel image from the standard repositories?

I am running Debian "Sid" and cannot install the Nvidia driver. When I try to install the driver using Module Assistant it says "Bad luck, the kernel headers for the target kernel version could not be found and you did not specify other valid kernel headers to use." It also says "If the running kernel has been shipped with Debian please install the package linux-headers-2.6.32-trunk-amd64." The kernel I am running is the one currently in Debian "Sid".
