I'm looking for a way to create a live cd from the existing image. I'd like to include some sort of installer, I've found gui remaster utilities, but none for the shell only. I need to setup the image to automatically login, so the user could just pop in the cd and start it up without a monitor or keyboard.

General :: Making Bootable Usb Stick For Clonezilla?

May 6, 2010

One of my computers is a netbook with no CD drive, so I need to create a bootable USB stick so I can reload a Clonezilla-made backup image from an external HD on to the netbook.I bought a 4Gb thumb drive and used Parted Magic to create a 200Mb partition on it. I formatted this and the remaining free space both as FAT32 and used Parted Magic to flag the small partition as bootable. Then I loaded the Clonezilla Live files onto this boot partition.Now the thumb drive boots up ok, but goes straight into a Parted Magic menu screen from which there is no way out! It's just the menu screen alone and has no PM functionality. This also happens on other systems where there is no PM installed or in the CD drive. So it must be something PM has done to the thumb drive.

Also, what would happen to the GRUB loader if I were to copy it back onto the hard drive?

Slackware :: Intel Graphics / Vertical Lines From Xpdf/gv Under Xterm Stick To Xterm Window Making It Unreadable?

Jun 13, 2011

Start xpdf or gv. Click an xterm to be active and slide it over xpdf/gv. Vertical lines from xpdf/gv under the xterm stick to the xterm window above and make it unreadable.

The problem does NOT show with KDE default settings with display effects on but does show in fvwm, xfce etc, and in KDE without effects.

On a system with a Sandy Bridge integrated graphics (i5-2400) the problem went away by downgrading to xf86-video-intel-2.13.0. But it was not enough for another system with 945G which needed downgrading to xf86-video-intel-2.12.0.

Ubuntu :: USB Stick Into Desktop - Select "Try Ubuntu Without Making Changes To Computer"

Oct 2, 2010

I've successfully installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my laptop but I'm having trouble even trying it on my desktop. I tried making both a USB installer and a CD from the .iso image, but when I pop in the CD or insert the USB stick into my desktop and select "Try Ubuntu without making changes to this computer", it manages to get to the chime but nothing is displayed. Apparently the OS hangs up after that or there's a problem with the display. Does this mean Ubuntu will not run on my desktop? I have experienced this not only with Ubuntu 10.04, but other versions too, like Kubuntu 10.04 and Ubuntu 9.04. Laptop Specs : Acer Aspire 4520, AMD Turion X2 TL-58 (Dual Core 1.9GHz), 2GB DDR2-800, Nvidia 7000M GPU, Nvidia 610M chipset (?), WD 320GB mobile hard disk. Desktop Specs : AMD Phenom II X3 720, MSI 785GM-E65, 2GB DDR3-1333, ATI HD5670 1GB (Sapphire), Realtek ALC889 audio, WD 1TB Green Power HDD, two LG optical drives, TP-Link TL-WN781N PCIE Wifi-N adapter. Is there any way I can try Ubuntu 10.04 on my desktop without making changes to it? FYI I've successfully installed Ubuntu 10.04 on a laptop using an ATI HD3200 GPU.

Debian Configuration :: New Image-2.6.39-1-686-pae Image-686-pae?

May 21, 2011

WTF why is it with every update the devs try to break something. Might as well be using Ubuntu at this point and No I do not want to install Stable. Todays updqate would bring in linux-image-2.6.39-1-686-pae linux-image-686-pae, but my CPU Single core Intel Pentium M (-UP-) cache 1024 KB flags (sse sse2) bmips 1196.07 clocked at 600.00 MHz doesn't use PAE so it told me to remove linux-image-686 and to install linux-image-486. So more shiny crap that doesn't support older hardware, it is getting to be as bad as Microsoft.

Why don't I just go upgrade or buy new hardware with every new shiny crap that wants to upgrade. If it isn't broken do NOT fsck with it.

Debian :: Install From A CD To USB-stick ?

Mar 22, 2011

I have an very old computer who I want to have som a server. The OS who is installed now i Windows 95.

Hardware:
- MMX 200 Mhz
- 160 Mb Ram
- 2113 MB HDD (bad shape)
- Network card 10/100
- 2 USB 1.0
- CD
- Floppy

I wonder if I can install debian on it with a CD, who install it on a 16 GB USB-stick 2.0.

I wonder to if i can make so Debian takes like 20 MB in Ram or less? I will run it textbased.

I'd seen here that Debian must have at least 64 MB in Ram http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/i ... n#id321935

But it's that true? I want a Debian who take ram like Damn Small linux.

The computer shall have ONE function. Run a tiny python script. It will read over 200 pages every 30:e second textbased. Thats what the python program will do. I must have internet connections.

Debian Installation :: Usb Stick Instead Of HDD?

Jul 17, 2010

I have a computer missing a HDD and I would like to be able to use it until I have bought a new HDD. I have seen it is possible to install the contents of a LiveCD to a usb stick, but is it possible to install a normal debian system to a usb stick and make it bootable? Example: can I make BIOS find my usb stick and make it the master HDD and then install debian on it by booting with an installation CD?

The advantages would be the possibility to modify the operating system and storing files, which is impossible when using a liveCD.
