May 20, 2011
Just wondering if it is possible to make use of the Windows keys on keyboards - the ones with MS logo.In Vista - the action is to invoke the Start Menu.In Linux, there is no action when you press these keys - can this be changed?

is it possible to make a system image with ease? By that I mean without having to fire up clonezilla and click through 15 clicks? I am probably being lazy and have noticed the really easy way to make a system image in windows - is there something similiar in ubuntu?

What exactly allows me to create a custom tailored *.img file to backup the contents of a partition?
This is my problem: My wife wants me to backup some Windows NTFS partitions on her working computer so she can use them on a different computer.
This is my solution attempt:Boot the Gentoo based System Rescue CD. dd the contents of the data partitions into *.img files on an external usb drive. dd the contents of the *.img files onto the new computer.
So far that worked, but there's one annoying problem: one partition on the work computer is 50GB big, but contains only 8GB of data. It would be really nice if I could just dd out those 8GB of "real data" instead of having a 50GB *.img file that is mostly empty. Likewise, it would be cool if there's an easy way to match the contents of the *.img file to the size of the new partition. The new data partition is 100GB big so it would be cool if my backup were automatically scaled to that size so I don't have an 8GB partition and an additional 92GB partition.

I've had enough with the malware that finds it's way into Windows. I currently have our home desktop (WinXP) which is plugged into our high speed cable modem. We also use a laptop (Windows Vista) downstairs which currently shares the internet wirelessly from our main desktop upstairs. Whenever we want to view pics, listen to music or surf the web, I just plug in my wireless router which is connected to the cable modem and my XP box.
How is it that I can still view my desktop's pictures, listen to my desktop's tunes and surf the web on my Vista laptop downstairs once I install Ubuntu on my desktop?

When I had Firefox 3.6 on both my desktop and laptop, after reading a how-to, I changed the desktop config so it looked, to websites, as though Firefox was running on a windows machine. I needed that because some websites still believe there is only one operating system (for the most part those are government run sites). how to change the config in Firefox 4 to make it look as though it is running on a windows machine?

[URL] When I download the .iso from [URL] and used Kana CheckSum from [URL]i saw the following md5 value 143609CA5B6BB4E5D7341117FE46D0E1 but according to this page [URL]
the value should be 8790491bfa9d00f283ed9dd2d77b3906 for ubuntu-9.10-desktop-i386.iso I really don't understand why there is lot of difference in the .iso file. My instruction for those who are trying hard..
1)download the .torrent version but not the direct download if you are at indian zone
2)use Kana CheckSum from kanasolution.com to check the md5 checksum
3)Tick the "verify after write" when you burn the CD through nuro burn in windows xp

I'm having difficulty making my FAT32 drive capable of read/write. I followed the instructions here (http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Maverick#Windows_Compatibility) and added the following line to my /etc/fstab file:
Code:
/dev/sda4 /media/WinD vfat quiet,defaults,rw 0 0
However, when I rebooted the drive is still read-only

I would like to split my display in two, so they would behave like two physical monitors, i.e. it would be for example like to connecting two 960x1080 monitors through physical ports. Is something like this possible? The problem is i would like to run two fullscreen applications on second monitor. Is that even possible? I prefer Windows 7/vista but I welcome Linux solution as well

I have a system which i installed on usb flash (doesn't matter why). The system has 3 partitions: "boot", "/" and "swap". "Swap" and "/" are encrypted by LUKS. "Swap" is encrypted by random key, "/" - by passphrase.
I created this system only to make a liveDVD from it (not liveUSB).
To achieve this goal i installed program called "Systemback" (fork of Remastersys).
Links:
[URL] ....
[URL] ....
So i pushed the button 'Create live system' (or Live system create, don't remember exactly) and configured it to automatically convert .*sblive to .*iso
Program made it's work and i burned image in DVD.
But when i launch it i have this:
The last picture - is when i trying to startliveDVD with installed LVM2. No difference except one message.
I went to freenode and ask some questions. Somebody told me that maybe the problem is in LVM. But LVM was already installed, so i installed LVM2. No result.
How can i make the system that is encrypted by LUKS work from DVD? And is it really possible? Maybe systemback doesn't support feature to make live-image of encrypted system?
The system is Debian 8.1.0
I did the same with nonencrypted system - result is succesfull, liveDVD works.

I need to have a persistent Debian install on a thumbdrive to run a computer that is currently diskless (dead hard drive). So far I've managed to get it to boot Squeeze live beta by setting up the thumbdrive with UNetBootin, but it's not persistent. I found this, but step 6 is a mystery to me, as I can find no such command or package.

Why is my Xen server (An up-to-date Lenny box) making Xen DomUs as Etch boxes? I run a command such as:
[Code]...
This is 100% replicable. I certainly never asked it to create an Etch VM! I cannot find anything in the docs to change this. And for the record, I did let it finish creating it, and it most definitely made an Etch box.

We are running on a debian lenny 5.0.5 server and we would like to upgrade our hadware with this card :
[URL]
Apparently the AAc drivers [URL] should allow us to make a material raid 5 with this card. (I hope installing the drivres after/during the installation will be enough and we will not hae to compile the os with it !) Though after searching for days the entire web i couldn't find any feedback on how runs this card with a debian lenny ? confirm us that it WILL run smoothly on a debian 5.0.5 ? If not, well .. we are trying to make a material raid 5 with 4 SATA II HD on a server without PCI-X port (only express 16x 8x 4x 2x 1x. us a robust raid controler that is assured to run fine with debian lenny ?

what should not be mentioned:
*disabling "Automatically fix broken packages before installing or removing" in aptitude -- because it does not work
*editing /var/lib/dkpg/status -- not related to apt-get really
* -m or -f options of apt-get -- because they do not help me in any way
* downloading the package manually and using dpkg --force-depends-version -i <package> -- again, not apt-get
I need the --just shut the fuck up and dl&install the darn package option immediately.

I have a linux server system based on Debian which I'm needing to package up as an installer cd; so that I can distribute it to others in our office/group for them to install. I need to have it as simple as I can as most will be able to run the installer but many won't know too much more than that. Is there a way I can make up/modify an installer of Debian to include my kernel patches/updates and customized software all pre-installed of the installer cd?

For some reason my Conky is making my machine do infinite DNS requests to the last host I'm connected with. For example, if I visit forums.debian.net it'll start the infinite DNS request to this host. If I close the navigator it stops. If I try to connect to irc.freenode.net it starts the DNS requests. If I disconnect it stops. Why is it happening?
That's my script:
Code: Select allbackground no
update_interval 1
total_run_times 0
own_window yes
own_window_type desktop
own_window_transparent yes

What i do is this .
apt-get install devscripts cdbs dh-make
apt-get build-dep wine
cd to the directory
dh_make -n -b -s
[Code]...
When i remove the ati drivers it builds fine but with every build of wine to remove my ati drivers is not a option. I also asked on the wine forums but the told me to ask here . And the person also sayed it looks like you install the ati drivers from the one of the ati site but i installed them from the debian repos.

I'm trying to build a shared library, and am receiving several undefined reference linking errors. Specifically, ffmpeg linked with libx264. I'm aware that this is not an appropriate forum for questions specific to ffmpeg or libx264. In order for one library / application (ffmpeg) to reference another library (libx264), the linker has to know where the referenced library (libx264.so) is located in the file system.
I'm pretty sure the linker knows where libx264.so is, because I receive a different error message when I run ffmpeg's configure script if the linker can't find libx264.so. In general, should running the install target of a make file be preferred over specifying the appropriate paths in the CFLAGS and LDFLAGS environment variables? I've tried both, and it doesn't seem to make a difference in regard to my error which method I choose.
How exactly is a library referenced? My error messages are
/root/ffmpeg/libavcodec/libavcodec.so: undefined reference to `d26'
/root/ffmpeg/libavcodec/libavcodec.so: undefined reference to `d22'
/root/ffmpeg/libavcodec/libavcodec.so: undefined reference to `d2'
/root/ffmpeg/libavcodec/libavcodec.so: undefined reference to `d20'
/root/ffmpeg/libavcodec/libavcodec.so: undefined reference to `d24'
/root/ffmpeg/libavcodec/libavcodec.so: undefined reference to `d0'
/root/ffmpeg/libavcodec/libavcodec.so: undefined reference to `q1'
If I can find out what library 'd26', 'd22', etc. are declared in, I should be able to resolve the undefined references. What exactly are 'd26', 'd22', etc.? Are these functions, classes, or something else? How can I find out what functions / classes are defined in a particular library?

I've gotten VNC setup and working well on our LAN. The next step we want to do is making it acessible from the web, so we can remotely do things with the office files.Unfortunately, I have no idea how to go about this. Our current setup is a router which connects to the phone line, and into which other devices are connected. We're in one room of a big office building which may complicate matters somewhat. Can anyone provide a bit of general info on this topic. Give me somewhere to start ?Ultimately we want to be able to connect to the vnc port from anywhere in the world.

I've been trying to make a live CD off an installation with minimalist deviation possible. Purpose is to check the hardware compatibility using the live CD, after which I'll copy the installation to the hard drive (which will probably be a squashed image) and do the necessary edits to make the system bootable. Since the rootfs will be copied over (not dd, but direct cp --preserve=all), the difference from the actual install should be minimal.
If there are any caveats using this procedure, do notify.
I've been succeeded in doing this using Gentoo but it appears the Gentoo kernel uses Gentoo specific kernel parameters which makes things very simple, but I gotta do this with the generic Debian kernel.
If it can be done easily using a script I would also like to know exactly how it's done so I can reproduce it by hand even to make an ro rootfs and possibly reproducing the same with other distros.

My brother is working for a company that is making various types of embedded software. He's been trying to install Micro Core Linux on a device, and it worked after some manual kernel patching & configuring. The issue is this; he need to install this system on hundreds of similar devices. Is there a way of making the configured kernel into a bzImage, so that the kernel can be compiled on the other systems without any tweaking?

I have to use pppoe because my ISP uses service names, and as far as I know the only program which lets me input a service name is pppoe (inside the pppoe.conf file). Networkmanager is buggy because it tends to disappear from the panel periodically and, worse, it doesn't reconnect (although the option is selected, it does reconnect only once).
So, for peace of mind I open a superuser terminal and enter "pppoe-start" and "pppoe-stop" to have everything I want (reconnects automatically, etc.). Now the question is: how can I have pppoe-start run at startup, automatically, without entering superuser mode, and without having a terminal open for this? Using Debian Testing (Wheezy).

I have a Toshiba laptop and Toshiba netbook (both Intel chipsets). Laptop - Squeeze install gave me the 2.6.32 kernel and sound only worked thru headphones but not the speakers. Later on, I compiled kernel 2.6.36.1 (and just imported .config from original kernel) and sound WORKED perfectly. I had a few other errors ("address space collision" / PM error) so recently I compiled kernel 2.6.38, which solved other hardware issues but sound is back to original problem (works thru headphones but not thru speakers). I even installed the "backports" kernel (2.6.38.4) and it didn't make a difference.
Netbook - Did exact same things as above but no matter what, the sound never worked on it... same issue (sound in headphones.. no sound in speakers) So, how do I "reverse-engineer" the laptop working sound install with kernel 3.6.36.1 and make it work with later kernel (nothing... and I've tried about 30+ thread suggestions makes the sound cards work properly.. other than kernel 2.6.36.1)
