May 2, 2010I bought a new SD card which I intend to put some MP3s on - except that I can't write to it because it tells me the destination is Read Only. No-probs thinks I: I'll just reformat it.
"Error creating file system: helper exited with exit code 1: cannot open /dev/mmcblk0p1: Read-only file system"
Various chmod commands all result in Read-only file system. I tried umount then mount commands, but it couldn't find it to mount once I'd unmounted it using the same /media/ file path (I assume it's the only one).

May 18, 2010I'm using Live helper to create install discs. I have the system all set up as it needs to be to run live from t a DVD, and have tested the installer on built ISOs and it works great.However, I can't seem to keep my modified /etc/gdm/gdm.conf file from being replaced with a pristine default gdm.conf. I have even placed it under config/chroot_local-includes//etc/gdm/gdm.conf which I thought should work?

Jul 9, 2011On a Linux CD/DVD, there are compressed filesystem images for the live version for KDE or Gnome for example, but they have no extension, but they are clearly an image file ( compressed filesystem images for the live version before installation ) !!
I was wondering, How do I mount these compressed filesystem images, after I copy the ISO content of the CD/DVD on my system .... I want to edit some files or packages and make some changes, like if I want to customize a live version of gnome for example ! ... ( I know you might be tempted to tell me to use KIWI etc to customize etc ..... ) ... but I want to be able to mount the compressed file system image, then edit it for reading and writing while it is in a subdirectory on its own ... i want to open it ! ... is there a way to do this ??? ... these type of files have no extension ...
i can open this compressed filesystem image then to edit for read & write ... before I roll it back again ..... If and when I succeed .... what should I watch out for ? ... will the same compressed file image but slightly modified work again ?
PS. that same question could be kind of translated or be extended like : how do I use unionfs/squashfs programs on the command line to mount these image files with no extension for read & write mode ???

I tried changing fstab, but umask and guid are not supported mount options for ext4. What can I do?
Note: I know I can do a chmod, but I don't want to do this again and again for every new file I create.

Nov 18, 2010I'm just wondering: I know that umask sets the default file permissions for files, however I want to know if there is anyway to set default file permissions for newly created directories.
For example, I want my user to create new directories that anyone can access and modify (777) but I want the new files the user creates to be 755 (read by everyone, written only by user).

I want all newly created files by 'user1' to have the default permissions of:
1. "owner can read and write"
2. "group can read and write"
3. "other can read only"
Permission 1 and 3 are already default. But I would like number 2 to be default as well. (the current default for group is read only).

Jun 1, 2010I am using the Gnome desktop in Lenny 5.03The default Gedit paper size is "US Letter", which is almost right for my HP Laserjet 4L, except that about .5 inch at the top and .25 inch at the left margin are cut off.I have defined a "Custom Size" under File -> Page Setup -> Manage Custom Sizes... with margin settings that solve the problem, but this "Custom Size" only remains the default Paper Size for printing until Gedit is closed.Using what appears to be the same gnome dialog from epiphany and evolution, the Papersize settings stick, but not from Gedit. I cannot locate any configuration file to edit, and nothing in the gconf editor seems to apply.

Jul 12, 2011i feel like this is a stupid question as i have seen many different ways to make a debian live cd, but the only way i understand is remastersys.i am trying to make a snapshot of my own debian unstable (sid) to be capable of re-distribution. remastersys will ONLY work on ubuntu, lenny, and squeeze.if anyone knows of any relatively simple tools i could use or could write an easy how too that would be very much appreciated. i am attempting to stray away from ubuntu and ubuntu based distros and use debian instead, although i cant find any distribution based on debian that i really like (maybe linux mint debian edition based on debian testing), but i really want the software right out of unstable (sid) and i would like to be able to make a distribute-able snapshot for myself and others that may be interested. (xfce + compiz + others, hopefully plymouth, out of the box). i have made some very good headway on this, but i dont know how to make a live cd out of an installed system without remastersys.

Apr 16, 2010Using C++, I want to process sub-folders on my home folder sequentially each with a special naming format and containing some binary files in it:

Give above folders, I will process files in 1/ at first, 2/ at second, 3/ at third, and so on.
For some n/ folder, if I realize that n/ actually does not exist in local file system, I do not want to wait for it. Hence I will keep processing (n+1)/ folder, and so on.
However, when processing some (n+m)/ folder, previously not processed n/ folder may have been created on local file system. In this case, I do not want to miss processing it, but somehow detect its creation and process it. After processing n/ folder, I want to continue from (n+m+1)/.

Apr 28, 2011Live CD: I dowloaded the ISO, burned it to CD, booted from this CD. It starts to load and I can see the purple background with the loading icons. Everything seems normal. But instead of ending up with the login screen, it ends up with a screen that says 'Please remove all bootup media and hit ENTER' or something like this. So I hit enter and then it shuts off my computer. That's it.
Live Stick: So I tried another option and created a stick with 'usb-creator.exe' that is on the CD. Then I start from that stick, but all I end up is a line of 'Syslinux bla bla copyright 20xx-2011'. That's it. Then it does nothing anymore. The cursor is blinking, but no prompt or whatsoever and keyboard input doesn't do anything.
Now something weird: When I insert Live CD and Live Stick at the same time and then boot my computer, then it boots into Ubuntu. Obviously it loads the first parts from CD and then the rest from stick. Because when I'm then in Ubuntu and try to format the stick, it says it can't do so, because there's system files from that stick in use.

Dec 28, 2010I am working on uBuntu 10.4 server. I am using kingston USB memory stick. When I plug in some times I don't get any messages on console.#lsusb --> shows the list of USB devices. In which I find the Kingston memory stick. Means ..it is detected.
But when i type #fdisk -l I don't see any devices like /dev/sdc1.
