Is there a software utility out there for Ubuntu that can make a backup of the hard drive my Ubuntu 10.4 is installed on?
I have used Symantec Norton Ghost for Windows before. Is there a similar program for Ubuntu? I would also like to use the backup of the hard drive to reinstall on the same drive after a format.
Also, what would happen to the GRUB loader if I were to copy it back onto the hard drive?
Whenever I'm dealing with large numbers of computers that need to have identical windows installations put on them, I love using Symantec/Norton Ghost to image the NTFS partition (just making the .gho file the size of the disk I've used, instead of the 160/320GB full volume size), and then uploading it automatically to a windows share.I'd love to be able replicate this exact process with Ubuntu. I have one computer that's ready to go, and a few dozen more that I'd like to quickly get that same image on.
I've heard that there's a command called dd that can make disk images, but I'd really like some sort of boot disk that can allow me to make an image, save it, then run the boot disk on another computer to allow me to reconnect to the server and dump that image on that computer. Ghost 4 Linux doesn't have a network/server component, I think.even if such solutions cost money, I'd love to know if they exist or not.
I'm trying to make a simple task as complicated as possible, so bear with me.
I'm going to force a friend onto Ubuntu soon, and the biggest requirement is photo management.
He wants his extensive photo library backed up, and backed up some more, and then when all feels safe, backed up even again.
Currently, all his photos reside on a 4 disk striped RAID array, based on his cousin's recommendation. The intent was a RAID 1+0, but they failed, and that needs to be fixed immediately.
So, instead of going with more mirrored hard drives in a RAID, which I know Ubuntu will do just fine, I'd like to simplify and just do manual backups of each hard drive.
So, I'm looking for a program that could possibly be set up to automatically back up a hard drive onto another hard drive on a weekly basis or something like that. Ultimately, doing a manual copy/paste of the data in the drive could work, but would be time consuming.
I'm scared of RAIDs lately because of a recent fiasco with a BIOSTAR motherboard and how it set the RAID mirror on a set of hard drives for a Windows load that rendered the harddrives basically useless for anything but a RAID mirror, with that motherboard and a Windows load, and I almost lost a lot of data because of it.
I'm also not sure how well Windows would recognize a RAID partition created in ext3, if he ever wanted to go back to Windows.

I don't know if this could be an indication that my hard drive(s) are about to fail. Can someone tell me if there's a way to test the drives or understand what's causing this error?
is there a way to write/unpack .qcow2 hard disk image directly to real hard drive in Linux?(I know it's possible to unpack .qcow2 to .raw and then dd to drive, but I'd like to skip .raw since its large)

I really want to make a copy of the system so i have a back up of the os. i have figured out that i can attach a hdd to the computer and copy the os via the command line with an ubuntu live cd but this only works as long as the computer that is receiving the backup is exactly the same or the same computer. I would like to transfer the image to a portable hdd then install the os onto virtual box ( a virtual machine). Is there a way to do this without buying expensive software.dose ubuntu 9.10 have a product similar to Norton ghost.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm having a problem which seems restricted to Fedora. I'm trying to install Fedora 10 on a dual boot system. I have Windows 7 RC installed. When I boot the live CD to run Fedora, my screen ends up displaying Fedora on the left half, and bits of the Windows shut down screen on the right. I cannot access the Fedora menus, they are pushed off to the left out of view.
I previously experienced the same problem with an earlier version of Fedora, with the HD loaded with Ubuntu and Win 7 beta. Fedora would boot but display either the last Ubuntu or last Windows screen to the right, whichever had been running last. No other version of Linux exhibits this behavior that I have found, but my experience is limited. Is there a particular procedure that I need to run to get Fedora to use the entire video display? Does Fedora need to be installed first?
Hardware is: ASUS P5E VM HDMI, using the integrated graphics, display is a 32" LCD TV HDMI input, hard drive is a Samsung 500Gb.
I have a Norton Ghost .gho file, and basicly I want to extract the raw image out of this, for example to use with with tools like dd. (So using any symantec/windows tools is not an option). Is there any open source tool which can deal with these .gho files ?
(Note: the.gho file I'm using is a sector based one, and not a file-based one, which implies that things such as Ghost explorer won't work either (see this page)
i have two hard drives,sda sdb. sda1 contains my xp,i want to work with windows on sdb1
bcoz of performance reason. ive used partimage to create an image and restore it to
sdb2 while doing so im getting an error that the sdb1 partition is too small ..,this makes me understand that partimage copies all the partition bit by bit with probably the boot sector as well. but thats not the behaivor i want. i belive what i did so far is like doing ghost with partition->to partition. it means the destination partition shuld be greater or the same.. is there any ghost partition->to image like in linux? partimage only works on partitions?(i.e cant do disk image) i think my answer is somewhere around copy the files with cp, and tar gz them.
I got a new game on DVD a while back but my computer isn't powerfull enough to run it in windows a friend sugested I use Ubuntu.so I download it and used Nero to copy an image of my DVD to my hard drive but Ubuntu dosent recignise the file which is and "NRG".I thought image files where "ISO".

But, I want to store my OS image (I'm sure that thats the right term... I'm just gonna hop you lknow what I'm talking about) on a CD. I decided to use this computer with Ubuntu for the next few months but it is absolutely crucial to preserve the current WindowsXP state somehow. Is there a safe way to "conserve" that very Windows installation as an image so I can recopy it later on? I'd like to clean out the computer completely to install Ubuntu afterwards. After using Ubuntu I want to install the old WindowsXP again as it was before. Is that even possible? Power on and XP boots as before? I mean driver, accounts, passwords etc? What would you recommend?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm overall realitively new to Ubuntu 11.0.4 and I had some questions regarding this operating system. I just wanted to inform everyone, that I'm attempting to make a transition, from a life time Windows user and a current Windows 7 Ultimate user, to being a Ubuntu user.
I am becoming fedup with Windows 7, because i dislike how much system resources, it requires to run, and in addition I'm skeptical about Windows security. I had a lot of bad experiences with the Windows updates as well, so I was kind of alienated, as one can imagine. What I did like about Windows 7, is how easy it was, to configure the user group policies. I was wondering if you were able to do that in Ubuntu latest release.
I also was wondering, if it were possible, to create a hard drive image, that I can just load up, if I ever needed to reformat, like I did in Windows 7.
however, I couldn't find a place in which it would really fit well. I have 2 hard drives, that I want to backup. I've heard of servers and things like that using a hard drive image. Is this similar to a disk image? What are the benefits of using hard drive imaging as opposed to using DVDs? And perhaps most importantly: how would I go about it using Fedora 10 (64 bit)?

I used to use DriveImage XML and it was a FANTASTIC program, but unfortunately the boot CD containing it can only be created by having Windows installed. So it might be time to explore a new program that is equally simple and effective as that one.
I'd like your recommendations of imaging programs that are free, and that work off a boot CD/DVD (because the live backup thing generally takes much longer for imaging an entire disk).
One thing I liked about DriveImage XML was that it stored the backup in a fairly readable format, so if one day DriveImage XML were no longer available you wouldn't lose your backed up data. Any such programs?
Also, would these programs work for a drive that contains an encrypted root partition (i.e. enabling the encryption checkbox in the CentOS installation)?
Is there any software that will create an image of my Hard Drive and put it on DVD as it is and if I had to reinstall I could use that image?
View 5 Replies View RelatedDoes anybody know how to or even if it's possible to create an ISO image (a snapshot, if you will) of an entire volume on a Linux box so that I can use that ISO to burn to a CD use in the future for creating an identical configuation on another box (which would have the same exact hardware)? It is to my understanding that I'd have to first create the ISO file of the entire system and then burn it to a CD and somehow mount it onto the hard drive of the identical-system-to-be.
I'm thinking that I'd have to use the "mkisofs" command but I'm not sure exactly how to do this. P.S. I do not want to use any 3rd party applications.

I have an image fiole of a hard drive which has been encrypted. When i load the file in to software to view the disk in a hexidecimal format, i need to find there the boot sectors are etc I also need to find out the "md5 hash" which is used?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI acquired an old IBM Thinkpad 770e the other day and it runs fine but I have an issue installing Linux on it. It has a floppy drive in it not a cd drive. It also does not have an ethernet jack or wifi.
I did clone my external firewall image to the drive but that image is partitioned in such a way to make it impractical for a laptop/desktop system. So I know that the machine will boot off a floppy and it will run off the hard drive. The bios test utility reports no hardware problems.
What I had hoped to do was to install some suitable distro to it. Not sure which one yet, any recommends? Damn Small Linux would be good except that you are limited to what they offer. I would also prefer to stay with a debian based distro.
The issue is install media. Floppy install images are not practical, and there is no cd drive. Is it possible to boot off a floppy and then chroot to, say a usb flash drive to do the install?
I do have a wifi card (d-link DWL-G650) that fits the micor-channel slot but it requires the madwifi driver which needs the kernel source and depends to be able to install. Not something that normally works out of the box so to speak.
Another question that comes to mind, Is it possible to dd a usb boot image to a hard drive and have it work?
I am looking for an Open Source software making it possible to make a disk image of an Ubuntu installation as well as a Windows XP installation.I have checked out Clonezilla which almost solved the problem. However, the disk to which you restore needs to be the same size or bigger. I want to restore the whole thingo a smaller disk than the original.I am considering getting myself an SSD disk which will be considerably smaller than the 160 gb disk I have right now. But from what I have been reading, rsync is better becasue it will basically mirror your hard drive, thus being able to run the cloned software from the new hard drive. My problem is I do not know what is the best commands or even the basic commands to use in rsync. I am trying to make an image from a external hard drive to a usb drive. That way my chances of messing up he original software is not as risky becasue I'll just restore the image onto another hard drive. View 8 Replies View RelatedI have built a CentOS machine just for playing around with and learning, however for the last few days I have had a couple of disk errors. So I want to replace it with another, and retain the data. I'm fairly new to Linux, but figured you could just image all partitions to another drive, so I tried this with Ghost 11. It imaged OK, but wouldn't boot - it went straight into Grub. What do I do here?
The original disk is just an 80gb IDE, the replacement disk is a 40gb IDE. I made sure it was in the same position on the IDE channel when attempting to boot from the new one (primary).I used Ghost to resize the partition down so that all partitions fitted onto the newer smaller disk.I didn't have much time to investigate further last night, so is it recoverable from the Grub prompt or have I gone about this the wrong way? Should I try using CloneZilla, or PING or should Ghost be able to cope?
Image Hard drive Ubuntu Operating system 9.10 Complete back up and restore. Changing over Hard Drives need a complete back up not just save files. So the image can be restored on any hard drive that restores the computer to its original state before it was imaged.
