Debian :: Add In A 200GB IDE Drive And All Worked Fine?

Nov 27, 2010

I have just installed Debian 5 and KDE. All works fine. I wanted to add in a 200GB IDE drive and all worked fine except when I use Konqueror to look at the drive contents it is unmounted. I can mount it o.k., but my question is:

Where do I put the mount command so that the drive mounts at startup? Do I have to set permissions as well and if so can i do this so that the drive is r/w accessible to me as a non root user? My system is just a desktop machine running Openoffice and Internet access.

I have a Z_Star webcam, which used to work perfectly well with OpenSUSE 11.3. At some time after updating to 11.4 (Tumbleweed, in fact) the device wasn't recognized any longer. Skype and Kopete both show that I have no available webcam device. The lsusb command (see below) shows the camera is there. What am I missing?

Ubuntu :: Toshiba Laptop Will Not Go To Sleep In 10.10 - Worked Fine In 10.04

Jan 8, 2011

I had screwed up a unsolvable Ubuntu install, so I had to reformat and reinstall. I did all that, installed my apps, but then saw and was convinced to upgrade to 10.10. It took forever, but it downloaded and installed the upgrade package. Since then, I have had a few issues that I had never had in 10.04. The other ones are in their own threads though. So, now when I either close my laptop lid or hit suspend, I can see it do some things, then either A. It goes to sleep. Or B. It just freezes.

No HDD activity, just those messages it displayed for suspending like it does when it works. I have screenshots attached of that. Also, in the default applet that provides you with the sleep option and shut-down, etc, sometimes the option Hibernate disapears. Now, I have seen how the menu is without it and like it that way. I think I need to be looking for a prefrence file for it, because I would like the option Hibernate to be removed from that menu.

1. How can I get the machine to go to sleep properly? This is mainly because I hate loosing what I am doing.

2. How do I remove the option "Hibernate" from Indicator Applet Session 0.4.6?

Hardware :: Initially Booted The Box Using A Knoppix 5.0.1 CD, And The NICs Worked Fine. When Installed CentOS 5.4, No Joy?

Apr 4, 2010

I have a whitebox server with three network adapters, two gigabit adapters using the intel 82573V chips, and an intel pro/100 adapter based on the 82562 chip. These are embedded on an MSI motherboard. None are passing traffic.I initially booted the box using a Knoppix 5.0.1 CD, and the NICs worked fine. When I installed CentOS 5.4, no joy.Interestingly, Intel recommends the e1000e driver (which I am using), but the Knoppix CD used the e1000 driver. Anyway, I pulled an updated e1000e driver from elrepo, installed it, and verified that it was in use with 'ethtool --driver eth2', and the correct driver/version was displayed.

Symptoms are no traffic passes, rx/tx packet counts in ifconfig are both 0 (no errors, either). Routing table looks fine; three routes: one for 169.x.x.x, 172.16.x.x (my subnet), and one for 0.0.0.0, all destined for eth2, and all up. When I ping 127.0.0.1, and the local adapter address, I get good replies. As soon as I ping a remote host on my subnet, I get 'Destination host unreachable'. Now, at one point, I actually got it to work. I applied a small patch from Intel to change a value in the EEPROM, rebooted as instructed, and the adapter came up and passed traffic. I did a 'yum update' to update my packages, and shortly thereafter, everything stopped working again.

I should be able to get Rsync to keep copying until it fills the drive, and output which files it syncs. Then use that list as an exclude list the next time... Providing my directory structure doesn't change, this should work.BUT!!! How do I get rsync to do this? I know of the --include and --exclude options, but am not sure how to use them in this case.

Debian Hardware :: Getting Dolby Worked With Lenny?

Apr 17, 2010

This is my first ever question. I'm a new-bee when it comes to configuring lenny at admin level, however with the help from the forum I was able to get my SONY Vaio VGN cs 190 configured successfully. I've gnome-core installed and here is my concern. I've Windows running on the same machine. I've a realtek sound card with Dolby SoundRoom. It works beautifully in Windows, as I've Dolby Control Center application to control the amount of bass I need. I also have a logitech Z-2300 2.1 Speaker system. Even though, it's a 2.1, it produces amazing sound. If I disable Dolby using Dolby Control Center, I fail to listen wonderful sounds whether I'm playing music or movies in Windows.

I'm not quite pleased with my experience of movies or music with Lenny as there is no Dolby Control Center application to control it. I've tried several suggestions, but none was fruitful. I've even tried Wine, but I'm not happy with it. If I can get this Dolby Control Center to work, I can completely take off Windows from my Laptop, which is my ideal goal.

Slackware :: NTFS Drive Stopped Working - Still Boots Fine

Sep 30, 2010

I have had my computer set to dual boot Windows 7 for months now with no issue. Now today when I logged on to Slackware (13.1 x86_64) it suddenly stopped recognizing that my Windows 7 drive has anything on it. Fdisk cannot see any partitions anymore. Yet I can reboot the computer and run Windows 7 off it just fine. The windows drive should be /dev/sdb with sdb1 being its system reserved partition and sdb2 being the actual Windows partition.

Dmesg sees that it is there like my other drives, but it appears that the Windows 7 partition is not unaccessable to anything in Linux.

How could this work yesterday yet today it doesn't? I didn't change anything.

Debian :: Everything Was Working Fine Except The Screen Was Blurry?

Dec 27, 2010

I'm having problems installing or removing anything from Debian. The whole problem has kind of looped for me for half a day now.

I installed Debian with the latest release and when I booted into the system, everything was working fine except the screen was blurry. So I spent a few hours looking for a way to install nvidia drivers. Trying to used the nv drivers, (vesa before) caused gdm to stop working with "no screen found" errors and when i finally installed the nvidia drivers, it seems to have reverted my kernel back. I was at 686 before and now I'm on 486, giving me an extra option between 486 and 686 in grub.

This was fine to me but when I boot into the 486 I get notifications about updates close to a gig in download size. I didn't want to download it in fear of breaking the system but did after package manager would refuse to install or uninstall anything without installing/uninstalling the gigs worth of updates.

During the update, my screen kind of malfunctioned and i rebooted going into ctrl+alt+f1. When I came to, the gdm wouldn't start, kind of looping to the login screen and blanking out, never fully drawing it. I tried a few configurations in /etc/X11/xorg.conf to no avail and decided to try the 686 configuration.

Xserver wouldn't boot with noscreens found untill I decided to try to install the same nvidia drivers. While I was still on the 686 kernel, it would not boot but when I rebooted and went into the 486 kernel, it logged back in to what seemed before updating.

Debian Multimedia :: Can't Play Person Of Interest .mkv Other .mkvs Work Fine

Oct 9, 2010

So I downloaded the HD version of Person of Interest: [URL] It has h264 video and AVC audio contained within a Matroska file. For some reason I can't get it to play in either Totem or mplayer, even though I've been able to play other Matroska files fine in both of them. Totem does nothing but display a black window. gmplayer displays a blue screen and there's a silouette where the control buttons are supposed to be. Also it takes about 20 seconds to close it. When I try to get the properties on it, it says "Creating properties window. You can cancel this operation by clicking cancel." and it won't show the properties no matter how long I wait. When I try to run it in mplayer from the command line, it says a bunch of these:

[h264 @ 0xb40fa0]AVC: nal size 29922113
[h264 @ 0xb40fa0]no frame!
Error while decoding frame!

All at the same hex location, but with seemingly random "nal sizes." Then it ends with this: Too many audio packets in the buffer: (4097 in 1648030 bytes).Maybe you are playing a non-interleaved stream/file or the codec failed? For AVI files, try to force non-interleaved mode with the -ni option.

A:   0.1 V:   0.0 A-V:  0.107 ct:  0.000   0/  0 ??% ??% ??,?% 421 0

Debian Installation :: Installing Debian On The Second Drive Without Messing With The Windows Drive?

Mar 21, 2011

I was wondering. Up till now whenever I installed Linux I've either dual booted with Windows off 1 HDD, or installed straight Linux by itself. However, I recently purchased a second HDD for my computer, and was wondering how I could go about installing Debian on the second drive without messing with the windows drive? Right now I have Windows 7 installed on my 1TB drive, and would like to try and install Debian on my second (750GB) drive. Would it be possible to install Debian on the second drive, install grub on that drive's MBR so I could choose between Debian and Win7 without touching the MBR on the 1TB Windows drive?

I'm paranoid about messing up my Seven installation, but really want to be able to load into Debian as well.

Debian Hardware :: Mc4695MF - Test Page Prints Fine But App Prints Blank Pages

May 19, 2014

I'm struggling on installing a KONICA-MINOLTA printer magicolor 4695MF printing properly with Linux Mint Debian Edition (up to date). The test page works fine...

KONICA-MINOLTA delivers 2 PPDs: one for standard printing and one for OpenOffice printing (available on the KONICA-MINOLTA support site).

Leaving a side the one for OpenOffice which is poor in using the capabilities of the printer, I concentrate only on the global one (M4695PX.ppd).

It's much more difficult for other applications, starting with EVINCE: some PDF files are printed properly (i.e. those generated in OpenOffice by the CUPS PDF printer), others come out as one only blank page, regardless to the original length of the document.

So documents received from 3rd party may be "printable" or not. And trust Murphy, the most critical aren't printed...
