Debian :: Xorg Crash After Converting / Partition To LVM?

Oct 6, 2010

I have Virtualbox VM with Lenny and I made another hdd copying all files from old drive to new one. But root partition I made to be on LVM and all three partitions are now primary. After using Debian DVD and rescue mode to reinstall grub and reconfigure kernel, the system boots fine, but Xorg fails to start.

General :: Converting A Vfat Extended Partition Into A Ext4 Partition?

I want to convert a vfat partition into an ext4 partition. This is on my wife's machine and she deleted the Windoze partition as she now prefers Linux. Here is the (edited) output from fdisk -l:-

/dev/sda2 514048 4708351 2097152 83 Linux
/dev/sda3 4708352 6805503 1048576 82 Linux swap

/dev/sda5 59006800 234227699 87610446 83 Linux

I want to change /dev/sda4 to 83 to free up space for Linux without losing the partitions in this 'extended' partition!

OpenSUSE :: Xdvi Cause Xorg To Crash

Jun 10, 2011

For a few days now every time I start xdvi, Xorg crashes completely. The screen freezes and no input seems to have any effect. So I have to reset the PC. I'm on a 64 bit 11.4, KDE setup, the graphics driver is nouveau.

Here is the part of Xorg.0.log, that seems to be relevant:

Code:
Backtrace:
[ 1772.204] 0: /usr/bin/Xorg (xorg_backtrace+0x28) [0x483068]

I tried to reinstall the packages containing libc.so.4 and libexa.so with no improvement.

Are there any other log files, that could give more information?

Ubuntu :: Xorg Crash On Startup?

Jan 10, 2011

Today, everything was working fine until I started an upgrade. After the upgrade finished, my bluetooth keyboard stopped working, so i connected another keyboard and CTRL ALT Backspaced. The screen turned off, then turned on, but blank. The login screen didn't show, and i couldn't even switch to TTYl. The only way i got anything to work was renaming /etc/gdm and rebooting. then i had to switch to TTY while plymouth was running. Then i logged as root and ran startx, and it froze, once again. If i try to boot into recovery, it doesn't work either.

Ubuntu Installation :: Gdm / Xorg Crash After 10.10 Web Upgrade

Oct 30, 2010

I've been using Ubuntu since Feisty Fawn, so I've been around the block when it comes to upgrades. From 9.10 to 10.04 I did a clean install, but I decided to try my luck with a web upgrade to 10.10. Well, so far it looks like that was a bad idea. I can't stay in gdm for more than about 1.5 mins before it crashes and drops me back to the greeter. Honestly, I'm not sure exactly what's crashing, but I'll append what logs I think will give some info.

General :: Partition Modification Made Windows Crash ?

Feb 8, 2010

I have an HP laptop with both Ubuntu 8.04 and Windows Vista installed on it.

The other day I noticed I was running out of space in the main linux partition (the / partition, not the /home partition), so I decided to move some space from the Windows partition and move it to the linux one. I used a GParted Live CD to do that.

My partitions are ordered as follows:
Windows Vista partition (NTFS)
Main linux partition / (ext3)
Linux home partition /hom (ext3)
HP RECOVERY (NTFS - I don't know what it is, it just comes with HP laptops that have Vista on them)

So I shrank partition 1, and then "moved" partition 2 to enlarge it (GParted said everything was alright).

After doing that, I went to my linux and everything seemed to be fine, I'm also quite sure I had access to my Windows partition as always. But today I tried to start my Windows and it just got stuck on the "loading" stage (that screen that says "Microsoft Corporation" and has a green loading bar). So I shut the computer down manually (by holding the power button for a few seconds). After doing that a couple of time, I went to my linux, which worked just fine, but I was not able to go to the Windows partition. You can see how GParted looks now for my computer:[url]

As you can see, the first partition (/dev/sda1), which is supposed to be the Windows partition, is not mounted and the system doesn't seem to be able to read it properly. Here is my attempt to mount it manually:

Code:

Mount is denied because NTFS is marked to be in use. Choose one action:

Choice 1: If you have Windows then disconnect the external devices by clicking on the 'Safely Remove Hardware' icon in the Windows taskbar then shutdown Windows cleanly.

Choice 2: If you don't have Windows then you can use the 'force' option for your own responsibility. For example type on the command line: mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sda1 /windows/ -o force

Or add the option to the relevant row in the /etc/fstab file: /dev/sda1 /windows/ ntfs-3g force 0 0

Fedora Installation :: LiveCD-system Crash At Partition Step?

Jun 5, 2011

I run ubuntu, 2 partion, one primary for / , one for /home and ofc swap.When I run the Livecd, at the partition step I do:

-Custom

-Select my / partition to install

-When I select next I get the error "blah blah, must be probably a bug...." and system crashes.

After system crach I can't boot into Ubuntu or anything, it gets me on the "error 11 ( think is 11 ) grub> " screen.Also, I think its something with my nouveau drivers, I think i get an error when boots the LiveCD something like "fudc...". It happens really fast and I can't read it properly.I did this procedure twice to write the errors, but it happens too fast to check them out. Also, is there a way to prepare the system before installing the Fedora, to avoid these errors?

Debian :: Perl Script - Converting Unicode To ASCII?

May 7, 2010

I'm trying to write a Perl script that will convert text to ASCII. I'm particularly interested in converting files created with MS Windows, so I used Notepad to create a few test files.

I have had some success with the following script:
[[ Script Deleted -- see subsequent posts ]]

After coming back /home/ to Debian, I used file to examine the file types:
$ file ansi.txt unicode_big-endian.txt unicode.txt utf8.txt
ansi.txt: ASCII text, with CRLF line terminators
unicode_big-endian.txt: Big-endian UTF-16 Unicode character data, with CRLF line terminators
unicode.txt: Little-endian UTF-16 Unicode character data, with CRLF, CR line terminators
utf8.txt: UTF-8 Unicode (with BOM) text, with CRLF line terminators

After running:
$ uni2ascii.pl -i ansi.txt -c ASCII -o new_ansi.txt
$ uni2ascii.pl -i unicode_big-endian.txt -c utf16 -o new_unicode_big-endian.txt
$ uni2ascii.pl -i unicode.txt -c utf16 -o new_unicode.txt
$ uni2ascii.pl -i utf8.txt -c utf8 -o new_utf8.txt

Everything appears good:
$ file new_ansi.txt new_unicode_big-endian.txt new_unicode.txt new_utf8.txt
new_ansi.txt: ASCII text
new_unicode_big-endian.txt: ASCII text
new_unicode.txt: ASCII text
new_utf8.txt: ASCII text

But the "little-endian file" does not convert properly:
$ md5sum new_ansi.txt new_unicode_big-endian.txt new_unicode.txt new_utf8.txt
c4def7932bc151b9e786b6ca1299162c new_ansi.txt
c4def7932bc151b9e786b6ca1299162c new_unicode_big-endian.txt
5b62a013dced4f2c2c0af45ea6388c1e new_unicode.txt
c4def7932bc151b9e786b6ca1299162c new_utf8.txt

When I use cat to print the new_unicode.txt file in an Emacs terminal, a ^@ appears on the last (empty) line. When I open the new_unicode.txt with KWrite, a warning message tells me that the file is a "binary" and "saving it will result in a corrupt file."

Debian :: Debian Synaptic Package Manager Error: Xserver-xorg Stripped?

Feb 10, 2011

I have used Debian Linux for two years, most recently the seventh or so iteration of Version 5. I use the Gnome desktop and the Synaptic Package Manager, not the Update Manager, for updates because it's easier to build a log with the former.In my most recent update, Synaptic stripped out all the xserver-xorg files47 in all. I thought it peculiar but did not know enough to interfere. When I rebooted, the system told me I must install xserver or correct GDM configuration and restart.

Have I been hacked? Am I being tested by the Linux Illuminati? Or does it have something to do with the warning message I received at the end of the update-upgrade, attached? And how do I go about reinstalling xserver? With Aptitude? I have tried running apt-get -f install, to no effect.

Debian Installation :: PPC G4 Where Is Xorg.conf?

Aug 5, 2011

I just did a net install on an old powerpc G4 and it seems pretty successful.except i cant change any of the monitor settings from the control panel in gnome (or LXDE)its showing 'not recognised' and only allows 768 x 1024 in very restricted colour.I dont think there is a hardware problem:

- the monitor is a generic old CRT which has worked fine with everything before this.

- the display card is an AGP 32Mb - original with this G4 and was working.

- the computer works great in Mac OS10.3 - (but OS10.3 doesnt support flash or up to date web browser any more, hence trying debian).

i have searched debian forums and various sites, but i couldnt find a fix. It looked like i should edit xorg.conf file but I am not able to find it. I looked in /etc/X11 - but not there.could someone tell me please, do i need to find xorg.conf?

Debian :: Xorg Monopolizes Resources ?

Apr 20, 2010

For some reason after the computer is on and idle for a little while, xorg starts using all available CPU resources. When I come back to use the computer, the screensaver will either be running nice and smooth, or the screen will be black. Either way, I won't be able to get back into X. I'll ctrl+alt+F1 into the console (or ssh if it's still not responsive) and "top" shows me xorg is hogging all the available CPU. I'll kill -3 <xorg> and it the computer will come back to the kdm login screen. What the %^&*??? It's a little irritating. I'm using Bouncing Cows and Seti@home when idle, but both do their job and close when they detect a key press. Even via ssh when I already tried waking up the computer with a key press, it shows the screensaver closed and seti is idle.

I have Debian/Lenny installed with all the latest updates and ATI's driver installed with direct rendering enabled (350fps for the cows, >2000fps for glxgears). it's a Dell Inspiron 8600, 1.8GHz, 2GB Ram, 80GB HD, ATI 9600pro/128MB.
