Debian :: Xorg Monopolizes Resources ?

Apr 20, 2010

For some reason after the computer is on and idle for a little while, xorg starts using all available CPU resources. When I come back to use the computer, the screensaver will either be running nice and smooth, or the screen will be black. Either way, I won't be able to get back into X. I'll ctrl+alt+F1 into the console (or ssh if it's still not responsive) and "top" shows me xorg is hogging all the available CPU. I'll kill -3 <xorg> and it the computer will come back to the kdm login screen. What the %^&*??? It's a little irritating. I'm using Bouncing Cows and Seti@home when idle, but both do their job and close when they detect a key press. Even via ssh when I already tried waking up the computer with a key press, it shows the screensaver closed and seti is idle.

I have Debian/Lenny installed with all the latest updates and ATI's driver installed with direct rendering enabled (350fps for the cows, >2000fps for glxgears). it's a Dell Inspiron 8600, 1.8GHz, 2GB Ram, 80GB HD, ATI 9600pro/128MB.

Debian :: Python-pkg-resources Returns Error Code

Apr 9, 2010

The system is Debian Squeeze/Sid with apt.conf set to Squeeze as the default. Most packages are from Squeeze.

I ran apt-get upgrade and it returned an error-code.

It might be it is this bug: Bug#574153: python-pkg-resources: Missing file leaves it unconfigured

I tried aptitude install -f, to hold it and to remove the package python-pkg-resources, but i am getting told the package would be in a very bad stage, and i should re-install it. That doesn't work.

Debian :: Debian Synaptic Package Manager Error: Xserver-xorg Stripped?

Feb 10, 2011

I have used Debian Linux for two years, most recently the seventh or so iteration of Version 5. I use the Gnome desktop and the Synaptic Package Manager, not the Update Manager, for updates because it's easier to build a log with the former. In my most recent update, Synaptic stripped out all the xserver-xorg files47 in all. I thought it peculiar but did not know enough to interfere. When I rebooted, the system told me I must install xserver or correct GDM configuration and restart.

Have I been hacked? Am I being tested by the Linux Illuminati? Or does it have something to do with the warning message I received at the end of the update-upgrade, attached? And how do I go about reinstalling xserver? With Aptitude? I have tried running apt-get -f install, to no effect.

Debian Installation :: PPC G4 Where Is Xorg.conf?

Aug 5, 2011

I just did a net install on an old powerpc G4 and it seems pretty successful.except i cant change any of the monitor settings from the control panel in gnome (or LXDE)its showing 'not recognised' and only allows 768 x 1024 in very restricted colour.I dont think there is a hardware problem:

- the monitor is a generic old CRT which has worked fine with everything before this.

- the display card is an AGP 32Mb - original with this G4 and was working.

- the computer works great in Mac OS10.3 - (but OS10.3 doesnt support flash or up to date web browser any more, hence trying debian).

i have searched debian forums and various sites, but i couldnt find a fix. It looked like i should edit xorg.conf file but I am not able to find it. I looked in /etc/X11 - but not there.could someone tell me please, do i need to find xorg.conf?

Debian Installation :: Missing The Xorg.conf?

However, it can't get in from there. It hasn't yet generated an xorg.conf in /etc/X11.Short of copying one, which I suppose I might try, How do you prompt debian to generate and configure the xorg.conf from scratch?Currently, I have

Debian :: Xorg - User Cannot Get Into The X-window System?

Nov 13, 2010

I have a Dell PC with Debian GNU/Linux lenny.sid that was working as a game server. After solving the problem with the login to the server the system comes to root. I tried startx command but the result was command not found. I could not find the .bin/bash_profile to edit it. I had in mind to #nano /etc/inittab

1:2345:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty1
edit it to 1:2345:respawn:/bin/login -f "root" tty1 </dev/tty1 >/dev/tty1 2>&1

I did not do it since i had to edit the .bash_profile with startx command which I was not able to spot. Whereis could not find the file. I tried to apt-get install x-windows-system but apparently I have a problem with my internet cause it can not download from Debian repositories. I check with ifconfif and later ping and i had results so i might not have problem with the internet. Is it possible the server to be set up so the user can not get into the x-window system? Did they disable anything? Do I have to install xorg and if yes can anybody give me an idea how I can do it?

Debian Configuration :: DDC Versus Xorg.conf

Jan 18, 2011

I'm trying to get the latest Lenny running on some old hardware (a Winterm 3150se). Everything is working just fine except for two things.

When Gnome starts, it comes up at 1600x1200 resolution, which is too high for my monitor. It shows a portion of the right side of the display, If I select Screen Resolution, it gives me a few standard choices, but if I pick one, it acts like it's trying to honor my request, then comes back as 1600x1200 again.

My xorg.conf file had no references to Modeline, so I added a 1024x768 Modeline, not really understanding where the selection I was given was coming from. Anyway, it didn't help.

I can see in the log file that right after the entry about using xorg.conf, it says 'Module "ddc" already built-in', which must have something to do with it?

My hardware supports all the usual video formats, at least it does when it's running WinCE. Is there a way to force the use of xorg.conf or can someone tell me why DDC is acting like it's "read only"? Is DDC a file somewhere?

My other problem is that the Winterm refuses to not try to boot from the flash memory thumbdrive even though it's formatted as a non-bootable device - it's my SSDisk. I have to boot without the drive in, then slip in in just as the boot process exits the blue start screen. I can live with this problem, since it might be dumb hardware.

Debian Multimedia :: Switch VT With Xorg And GDM Without Multiseat?

Jul 22, 2010

I know this is usually with the intent of multiseat systems. I am not interested in setting up a multiseat system. What I am interested in configuring on using the console and jumping back to X session, not the other way around. Is this possible if your default desktop environment GNOME and configure GDM to do this with the novtswitch parameter mentioned here? [URL]..

I tried even playing around with Xorg, finding out from the man page Xorg server-1.4.2 it does not even have novtswitch functionality compiled X does, but I am not sure I am configured it properly, specifically because I am not doing multiseat. Does anyone have background on this to give me some guidance? I have attached the relevant conf files and logs. Let me know if more is needed. In my test environment, it switches VT anyway and the keyboard does not work. I assume my Xorg binary is not compat for this, but am I even on the right track? I did not expect the kb to go out like it did.

X then fails to start and shows an error of no screens found.Everything is fine in text mode; only X is not working.I have to get this fixed very quick or I might not get to use Linux at work anymore.

Debian Hardware :: Wheezy 7.9 - EDID / CVT And Xorg Log

Dec 4, 2015

I am running Wheezy 7.9, I have a Biostar motherboard with integrated Intel graphics (945 chip set), and a Viewsonic va912b 19" LCD monitor. I have recently been having problems with the computer not being able to read the EDID data from my monitor. About half the time the EDID is read okay. So, in order to set the monitor to the desired resolution I have created a shell script to set the resolution after I log in. Knowing that my monitor supports 1152x864 @75hz I used cvt to get the modeline info.

Code:

Select allroot@JohnBoy:/home/john# cvt 1152 864 75
# 1152x864 74.82 Hz (CVT 1.00M3) hsync: 67.71 kHz; pclk: 104.00 MHz
Modeline "1152x864_75.00"  104.00  1152 1224 1344 1536  864 867 871 905 -hsync +vsync

Then I wrote this shell script.

Code: Select all#! /bin/sh
#! /etc/init.d/monitor_1152x864x75
#
#add monitor resolution not being found at startup
#data from cvt
xrandr --newmode 1152x864_75.00  104.00  1152 1224 1344 1536  864 867 871 905 -hsync +vsync
xrandr --addmode VGA1 1152x864_75.00
exit 0

It works fine, but I see a difference between what cvt gives versus what I see in the xorg log file (when I get a good EDID read). Here is what I see in the xorg log.

Code: Select all[    17.611] (II) intel(0): Modeline "1152x864"x75.0  108.00  1152 1216 1344 1600  864 865 868 900 +hsync +vsync (67.5 kHz e)

Notice that there are some small differences in the horizontal and vertical timings, cvt versus xorg log.

The biggest difference, to me, is that cvt has -hsync and the xorg log shows +hsync. I would assume that the data shown in the xorg log file is based on what was received from the EDID and therefore is what the monitor expects. Is that a correct assumption? And might using -hsync as per the cvt, versus +hsync, affect the monitor operation? Using -hsync does not appear to create any kind of video artifacts (tearing or distortions).
