Ubuntu :: Xorg Crash On Startup?

Jan 10, 2011

Today, everything was working fine until I started an upgrade. After the upgrade finished, my bluetooth keyboard stopped working, so i connected another keyboard and CTRL ALT Backspaced. The screen turned off, then turned on, but blank. The login screen didn't show, and i couldn't even switch to TTYl. The only way i got anything to work was renaming /etc/gdm and rebooting. then i had to switch to TTY while plymouth was running. Then i logged as root and ran startx, and it froze, once again. If i try to boot into recovery, it doesn't work either.

Ubuntu Installation :: Gdm / Xorg Crash After 10.10 Web Upgrade

Oct 30, 2010

I've been using Ubuntu since Feisty Fawn, so I've been around the block when it comes to upgrades. From 9.10 to 10.04 I did a clean install, but I decided to try my luck with a web upgrade to 10.10. Well, so far it looks like that was a bad idea. I can't stay in gdm for more than about 1.5 mins before it crashes and drops me back to the greeter. Honestly, I'm not sure exactly what's crashing, but I'll append what logs I think will give some info.

OpenSUSE :: Xdvi Cause Xorg To Crash

Jun 10, 2011

For a few days now every time I start xdvi, Xorg crashes completely. The screen freezes and no input seems to have any effect. So I have to reset the PC. I'm on a 64 bit 11.4, KDE setup, the graphics driver is nouveau.

Here is the part of Xorg.0.log, that seems to be relevant:

Code:
Backtrace:
[ 1772.204] 0: /usr/bin/Xorg (xorg_backtrace+0x28) [0x483068]
[ 1772.204] 1: /usr/bin/Xorg (0x400000+0x5e6d9) [0x45e6d9]

[Code].....

I tried to reinstall the packages containing libc.so.4 and libexa.so with no improvement.

Are there any other log files, that could give more information?

Ubuntu :: How To Update Xorg To Change Video Cards

May 16, 2010

I have a video card (Nvidia) in my computer that I want in another computer. I am going to be using the onboard graphics instead. I am running Lucid 32bit.

When I start up using the onboard graphics, the BIOS screen appears, then I see the normal underscore "_" flashing in the top left corner, but when that is done, my screen turns black and the monitor shuts off. I tried running a live USB and everything was fine so it's not a problem with the graphics card compatibility. I think I have to try booting into the command line and typing

Code:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

but I don't know how to enter the command line. Is that what I have to do or is there a different way?

Ubuntu :: If Xorg Doesn't Exist - What Handles Video

Jul 5, 2010

My laptop has an Intel video card. Does Intel have open source drivers that are included in the kernel? I'm kind of curious because I do not have a xorg file, and I did not install any drivers as I had to on my nvidia desktop, yet all of my maximum resolutions come down accordingly.

I'm just curious on what exactly controls the video settings if xorg isn't in the picture.

Also - what relevance does the Fn keys have that probe for a 2nd monitor to Ubuntu? For example, I do not have a 2nd monitor attached, but if I hit Fn F8 over and over, sometimes it changes my resolution. Why is this? Why would that revert my resolution?

Ubuntu :: S3 Resume Kills Video / Turns Xorg Zombie

Mar 6, 2010

I'm running 9.10 on an HP d530 SFF, Pentium 4 2.8GHz HT w/800MHz FSB and 512KB L2, 1.25GB DDR333 RAM, GeForce 440MX. In the BIOS I have ACPI S3 Video REPOST enabled, as well as ACPI S3 Hard Disk Reset enabled. Resuming had the same problem with either of these settings disabled as well. Install graphics driver is nvidia-glx-96, version 96.43.13-0. To my knowledge, this is the newest driver that supports the GeForce 440MX -- I attempted to upgrade to newer drivers for XBMC before but they do not support the card.

uname -a output:
Linux fahrenheit 2.6.31-20-generic #57-Ubuntu SMP Mon Feb 8 09:05:19 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux

When I attempt to suspend this machine it suspends fine, and will come back to life when I press the power button. I then get a hardware (text mode) cursor for a few seconds, then the screen blanks and goes black. At this point I can ssh into the machine and it is responsive, mostly, but Xorg is taking up 100% CPU and the fan spools up to maximum. The Xorg process is unkillable -- kill -9 won't do it. Load avg on the machine is high and it gets freeze-y for a few seconds at a time. How to get either suspend or hibernate working. This is a media box and we'd like the convenience of a quick resume time, but the ability to save electricity when it is not in use.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Edited Xorg.conf And Lost All Video?

May 3, 2011

I have Natty Narwhal and everything was working. Then I moved it to my HDTV, and I had overscan issues. Following some advice I found online, I edited /etc/X11/xorg.conf with new information including a ModeLine.

Upon restart, I get my BIOS screen, the Ubuntu splash, then... nothing. The display goes to sleep. I can ping the computer, and everything seems to work except I have no video.

I did backup my xorg.conf file, but I don't know how to get to it without a display. Hindsight tells me I should have given myself a way to remotely control my computer before messing with xorg, but you live and learn.

I've read online that there is a way from the login screen to get to Terminal without loading the desktop environment, but I can't get to the login screen.

I've also tried using a Linux LiveCD to access my filesystem, and that works to view files, but I have no root privileges.

Is there...

...a way to get to Terminal without loading the login screen?

...a way to give myself root access to my harddrive from a LiveCD?

...something else to try?

Note that this did the same thing when I tried to install Ubuntu 9.04 with the Alternate CD. I have a SiS motherboard. I tried OpenSuse just for the fun of it and it works!!! But the things is I don't like OpenSuse I would really like to make it work with Ubuntu.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: OpenOffice Makes Video Refresh And Gnome Crash?

Jun 30, 2010

Since upgrading to Lucid a few days ago I'm having intermittent problems (90% of the time)with opening OpenOffice files. When I open up a spreadsheet (.ods) in OO, (whether OO was already open or not) my screens go black, then flash on and off for 30 seconds (ish) as if trying to change the refresh rate.Sometimes this results in Gnome crashing and restarting itself. it settles down and is OK. On a few occasions I have had to change terminal and manually restart gdm.

Here's my environment;

Dell Latitude D620
nVidia GeForce Go 7300 (according to hwinfo)
Ubuntu Lucid 32-bit (upgraded from Jaunty)
2 GB RAM

I've got the recommended "NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version current)" hardware driver and the NVIDIA X Server Settings applet, which says my NVIDIA driver version is 195.36.24. I'm running dual screens (1440x900 and 1280x1024) using TwinView. After a flicker, here is what I find in the Xorg.0.log;

Code:

(II) Jun 30 12:17:42 NVIDIA(0): Setting mode

Debian Hardware :: Xserver-xorg-video-sis Not Available Anymore On 8.0?

May 2, 2015

Since my upgrade from Debian 7.8.0 to Debian 8.0

Happy to get a lot of my computers now working fine with Debian 8 ...

This one embed a Silicon Integrated Systems Video card [1039:6330]

This computer with an Athlon 64 2800+ and 1GB of DDR RAM, destined to be a BOINC worker until the end of his life, had the chance to upgrade with a Debian 7.8.0 (LXDE) few times ago (after long years of Windows XP services). And the only thing I had to set was the wireless card (firmware-b43-installer, adduser me netdev, and it was good) and it was perfecly working. Apt-get was giving to me creepy old versions of software, so it was the only thing that disturbed me, but let's go for the brand new Debian 8.0

But now with Debian 8.0, the graphics are bad, resolution is bad too.

I first tried with "lightdm" and "mate-desktop-environment" because of the LXDE icons that were fine on every computer with 7.8.0 but distorted and cropped with Debian 8 on every computer too (how is it simply possible for the mainteners to find it ok ). Seeing that my SiS card was not working well, I tried to reinstall everything with Debian 8 and LXDE as before... and hope icons will be repaired soon. But the problem with my video card is still present.

Then, I realised that on my Debian 7.8.0 computers, xserver-xorg-video-sis is available and installed. But not available anymore on Debian 8.0

OpenSUSE :: Downgrade That Xorg-X11-driver-video Thingy?

Jul 2, 2010

I'm running OpenSuse 11.2 KDE 3 Initially FireFox was absolutely fine, But recently It became utterly slow. I searched plenty of forums and tweaked the about:config and played around with ipv6. Some threads suggested downgrading some x-video thingy coz of an update sadly I haven't got a clue how to downgrade, in addition all these threads were talking about rather old OpenSuse versions. I installed the newest Nvidia driver as some suggested it might have to do with the desktop effects, actually I just turned them off (literally just this moment) and FF ran utterly quick, hmm I would like to keep em though. Does this mean i need to downgrade that xorg-X11-driver-video thingy? I don't seem to have a downgrade option I can only update delete and so on...When clicking on versions it doesn't show any of the 7.3 only 7.4s. I kind of depend on some firefox plug-ins which is why I would rather not use another browser..
