I am working on uBuntu 10.4 server. I am using kingston USB memory stick. When I plug in some times I don't get any messages on console.#lsusb --> shows the list of USB devices. In which I find the Kingston memory stick. Means ..it is detected.
But when i type #fdisk -l I don't see any devices like /dev/sdc1.
I'm about to ditch Freenas as my NAS software and make it an Ubuntu server box. The mainboard is an Asus AT3ION-T dual core Atom board. Freenas runs happily from USB stick. I have no optical device to install Ubuntu from and would like to install Ubuntu Server to a USB stick.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have this weird problem with my usb drive (Transcend 8 gb). It had been working fine for 2-3 months. But then all of my systems, except one stopped detecting this drive. Connecting the usb to these systems has no effect - no /dev file created and nothing shows up in dmesg and lsusb.
And on the one system (out of 5) where it works properly ,lsusb has this output:

I didn't do anything special with this usb, just using it as normal (data transfer etc). And no, I don't connect my usbs to Windows systems. I have formatted it, ran fsck but nothing worked.
I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 atm and it's not detecting my USB stick.Well I think it knows it's there but I can't open it and well,not too familiar with all the terminal codes thus I could use some help in that department.I can get the USB stick to work on windows and never had a problem with it really...

I downloaded Ubuntu Server. I absolutely love it. It is easy to set up and I've already learned alot while doing so.

Everything works locally, but I don't have any clue to maken it visible for WAN. Is everything from here set in the router settings? Or will I also have to make adjustments in the Server's settings?

I'm trying to run Web server (nginx, does not really matter) "behind" VPN tunnel (i.e., on VPN client - the idea is that Web server is available at VPN endpoint IP on VPN server). Stock Ubuntu 9.10 Server with stock openvpn 2.1. No network changes done, only ufw is enabled and IPv6 is switched off. I need this box to be available at main IP address, no default route for VPN tunnel.
Tunnel itself works nicely, no problems at all. Hand-made static routes work via tunnel just fine. Problem is in-going traffic - I can see that it at least comes via tunnel (via OpenVPN debug), but is blocked (or dropped) by firewall or kernel. As far as I know, specific VPN server does not filter anything and is used for running Web servers on other IPs. I think I might need to set up some sort of IP forwarding for tap0 device to localhost - but don't really know where to start.
Tried disabling firewall, making Web server listen on all IPs (from localhost to VPN tunnel) - no luck. The box is in another country and KVM will be time and money, so I really don't feel like experimenting. openvpn.conf (IPs are obscured, non-relevant options removed, based on recommended config for that server):

I set up an Ubuntu server install yesterday. I have used Ubuntu desktop for quite some time and have no issue with command line. I have everything working, except SMB shares. The share still works if I enter it's path manually (//server/share) but even shares I want to be viewable by browsing are not. (Attempted to browse in Nautilus, Windows and Mac file managers.) Server is running 10.10 (AMD64). Dump of smb.conf (generated with SWAT, which also works otherwise) follows. Solution with either SWAT or editing the file manually is fine.

I am running Ubuntu Server 10.04 and I just created a new user. Everything works great except the new user's SSH shell can not do certain things.
For example, I cannot arrow up for previous commands on the new user. I just get "^[[A" when I try that. (I can do this on root.)

But how can i move a user to a group when he is created with adducer.
Currently have access to a VPS where we are running a small game server on ubuntu - the problem is that it is a multi-user environment, so when one person restarts the server process, all files it creates are owned by that users name and group. I have created a group called 'game' and added both users to it, but I need to know how to make all files in the game server's directory to be r/w/x for the group 'game'. Currently, I have a script that chowns and chmods all files recursively on startup, but I'd prefer not having to do this.

When they create folder they cant make another in than folder, or for example they cant see files they upload in that directory...That write permision i try to change in their config file, with every combination of local_umask and file_open mode values. How can I handle that. I want that virtual user who creates directory (in their root directory) have all privilages to that folder and all content in that folder.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI configured my server to have the virtual mail authenticated and stored through mysql DB.Now the authentication works, but then I got the dreaded -ERR chdir error.After research and testing for ohurs I finally got it working on ONE account after I created the maildir with maildirmake.Now I am able to login and "list" messages, but nothing else. When I use postfixadmin to setup a new user, the maildir does not get created so I have the same problem.I'm trying to troubleshoot what is happening.Here are the relevant config files:

I am aware of the fact that Ubuntu can be installed and booted form a USB stick. No problem. What I wanted to know is if this year's Ubuntu is smart enough to not trash the USB stick with excessive writes to a specific sector.
While USB sticks are not expensive, if the OS is going to thrash them, it limits its usefulness.
I created a new virtual host in Apache using Webmin and am having trouble getting it to work. When I created it, I opted to create the config file as a "New file under virtual servers directory /etc/apache2/sites-available". So now I have a default config file /etc/apache2/sites-available/default and a new one created by Webmin at /etc/apache2/sites-available/webmin.1412323.conf. It seems like the settings in that new Webmin config file aren't being picked up by Apache -- when I try and browse to mywebsite.com it shows my root /var/www folder, not the subdirectory /var/www/mywebsite.
Is there a way I can tell Apache to include the new Webmin config file for the virtual host or should I just copy the directives into the default file at /etc/apache2/sites-available/default? It seems like Webmin should automatically configure Apache to work with any newly generated config files.
Is there a way to move files to a usb stick?

This is so that Apache can be part of this group and can access user public HTML directory, but other users are not able to access in any way the files in the users home directory. What I have seen that works manually is adding the user and then changing the group for the home directory. But I want to automatically set this when the user account is created. WHat I see happening is that when /etc/skel is copied, it automatically sets the group and ownership of everything to the users default group and ownership. I've seen some suggestions on setting permissions, but these don't seem to work because it seems that users are able to cd into a directory and not list it, but if they know the file name they can access the file.
View 1 Replies View RelatedRunning NFS on Fedora 10. Exports fine. I tested it locally. I tested the NFS configuration by trying to access the exported directory from my local machine, before testing it from a remote machine. While logged in as root, I created a new directory "/mnt/nfstest".
Then I mounted the NFS share at the new directory I created:
[root@eric root]# mount -t nfs localhost:/mnt/nfs /mnt/nfstest
When I tried to mount on the remote client:
[root@frank root]# mount -t nfs eric:/mnt/nfs /mnt/nfstest
After a while I got:

mount.nfs: mount system call failed
I tried strace but wasn't sure what I was looking for, but I've attached the results as a .odt file.
The question is, as far as I know Ubuntu distro adds a user created with useradd to supplementary groups automatically. For instance, I want to enable sudo for all newly created users on my LiveCD and want them to be added to the group 'wheel' on creation. I'm sure it is possible to do it in Fedora, but how?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have installed Ubuntu for a friend and find that on that installation Audio CD's are not automatically visible.
Data CD's appear fine and audio CDs are visible with some software (e.g. with RipperX) but they are not visible in the file system and cannot be played directly (e.g. with RythmBox).
With my installation of Ubuntu (also 10.4), as soon as I insert an audio-CD, I am prompted as to whether I want to open the CD with RythmBox. This does not happen with the other installation.
Does anyone have any tips here? Do audio-CD's demand that a certain package is installed for them to be visible/playable?
PS: I have recently changed the DVD-drive to a CD-drive. Do I need to re-declare the drive parameters?
I have a folder on a fat32 partition that is mounted in both os's on my system.(Ubuntu 10.4 and Win 7) When I go to windows 7 the partion is mounted but I can not find the Music Folder on the drive. When i have it booted in linux I have access to the Music folder. The last change on my system I made was I ran edna-0.6 for a day so I could stream the contents of the folder. I need to figure out how to get access to these in windows again.
