Debian Installation :: Installing Debian On IBook G4 / PowerPC
Jul 17, 2010I have downloaded Debian/PowerPC_lenny from http://www.debian.org/distrib/netinst. The netinst CD or the minimal CD for some reason doesn't boot. When I put it in the CD-ROM it doesn't begin whatever it has to do. Do I need to do anything? I restart my iBook G4 (1.33 GHz PowerPC G4) several times and held the "c" button (for CD-ROM) but nothing has happened. I wonder if someone can help me begin the installation process.
FYI, I have partitioned my hard drive into two volumes. I would like to install Debian in one of them. I *do not* want my Mac OS X to get disappeared in the Debian installation process. So please help me if you would as to how I can (1) boot Debian minimal CD and (2) install Debian on one of the two volumes I have on my iBook.

In terminal. However, when I do I get the following message, and no such file gets created.

Debian Installation :: Debian Squeeze On The Dell Mini 9?
May 22, 2010This topic began in the Debian Development forum here I have successfully completed both the install and the after installation configuration. I have a fully functional system on this little baby, inspite of the fact that wireless (Broadcom bcm4312), ethernet (Realtek) and sound were initially broken.
There is a lot of assistance out there on the web. In the previous thread, I was having trouble installing any debian on a usb stick. The issues that needed resolving were 1. Bad stick
2. Incompatible kernels between boot.img and .iso
3. The method of copying .iso to the stick that finally worked was wget My first successful usb install was Lenny. Even though I upgraded the stock system with lenny-backports, I could not get wireless, ethernet or sound working the only connection I could get to the internet was through my 3g stick and that was not performing up to it's capability. I manually configured wvdial to get that working.
I attempted an upgrade to squeeze several times and each time the upgrade trashed the system. I finally found squeeze boot.img and .iso files from an eee pc blog. This allowed a fresh install of Squeeze and I was making progress. The little atom processor would not handle the b43-fwcutter driver, so I compiled one from the Broadcom site written especially for the atom processor. Now I had cable broadband supplied wireless. I got my ethernet working with help from the Gnome site technical specs on Network Manager. Simply changing ifupdown=false to ifupdown=true in the network manager config file.
Sound was activated by help from a blog entitled "Debian on the Dell Mini 9" My head is spinning now or I would be more specific and instructive on all I did to get this baby up and running. If anyone asks, I may do a how-to.

May 31, 2015I am new using linux and don't have too much experience in terminal, however I am curious and work hard. I have an imac G5 powerpc with 2g processor, 768 mb ram and 232.7g hard disk. I recentrly installed debian 8.0.0 (jessie) with xfce environement. I have three other computers (two with xununtu runing and one with windows) using dropbox to sync all my work in differents places, so I use dropbox to get all synchronized. I don't want to change all the pc's to other cloud service, I would like to install dropbox in this machine.
I installed libnet-dropbox-api-perl, pear-channels and pho-dropbox packages from the synptic package manager with the hope to use dropbox...but I dind't even find something colled dropbox in the pc.
My question is: is it possible to install and use dropbox in this powerpc machine ? if yes, is there a tuto (for dumps) to get it ?

Dec 28, 2010I have just installed Squeeze on my 5+ year old iBook G4 and it runs quite nicely and quite fast! I am very happy with it overall. Finally I have been able toinstall Debian on a piece of hardware. Dual boot is generally hopeless on Macs. So this is a single boot setup and I am quite happy with it. I have two major issues right now:1. There's something wrong with the sound system. I get the following error message when I clickon the small x to the right of Volume Control (on the upper right corner of my screen). See attached screen shot.

Jan 17, 2015I am wanting to get be able to upload and get stuff from dropbox on my powerpc install of wheezy. Debian does not have the app for powerpc machine in stable or testing. There is a thunar extension in sid but i do not want to risk breaking my system so I decided to grab the wheezy source and compile myself. I am sure I have all the dependencies however I am I am getting this error. See below

Jan 2, 2011I have posted questions on several Linux forums that asked how I could turn off the touchpad on my new EEE-900A netbook. There is a backstory that is not that relevant, but in a nutshell, I got this tiny low-power computer to be my voice since my speech is impaired. Only the latest Debian has the tools I needed.
After much searching, suggested that I remove the touchpad driver; the command as root: # rmmod psmouse
Did the trick. On the 900A, the protocol that handles the touchpad is the PS/2. Removing the psmouse driver module does not affect my USB mouse, so now I can use my USB mouse and type away with my left hand and bumping into the touchpad doesn't screw things up. In other words: Success. (I am being as explicit as possible so that all search engines will find this.

Jul 6, 2015I have an Aspire One ZG5, Stretch/Sid, fully updated.In modprobe.d I have acerhdf.conf with:

When the temp reaches 65c the fan comes on, but never shuts off. The fan does cool the cpu.If remove the module, and then modprobe it, the fan stops until the cpu reaches 65c.how to get the fan to shut off properly?

Jan 28, 2011I've been trying to set up MintPPC on my girlfriend's old iBook. I started with the debian squeeze installation from a burned cd. Everything went fine and i booted into the new system.
No matter what I try to install I get that error, with different sectors each time. I can install .debs using dpkg just fine, I can compile source code. apt-get just won't work.I've been reading about this for hours, and the machine is currently running e2fsck -c on the main filesystem. It is a more or less never ending stream of those errors with a few that reference task_pio_intr rather than dma_intr thrown in for good measure.I've been reading for hours but I haven't found anything on the google or forums that matches my problem(or atleast not that I could understand).
From my research I've tried hdparm to change the DMA mode, slower and faster and no luck, removing the .bins in one of the apt folders, and reinstalling debian.I've read the posts I could find on here, and mostly the problem seemed to be intermittent for them. For me it is only when I use apt-get, and now apparently e2fsck(badblocks). It happens every single time with apt, I can't use it to install anything. But i've done plenty of other file operations without a bump.Any suggestions would be most welcome! Especially an in depth explanation of what that message means. I'm happy to do my own research and work, I just have no idea what's going on!

Oct 20, 2015I have a problem with my computer running debian testing with kde. When after a while I'm away form keyboard my screen turn off for power saving, but I cannot in any way turn it on again.
I tried moving mouse, pressing some key, Ctrl + Alt + Del, Ctrl + Alt + BackSpace, Ctrl + Alt + Esc, and also Ctrl+Alt+F1/2/ecc.. No way. I had to reset my computer every time.
Debian Hardware :: Backlight Occasionally Not Turning On After Suspend?
Oct 20, 2010I have been running Squeeze for quite a while on my Asus W5F laptop, and recently I have started having intermittent issues with it not starting the backlight after returning from suspend/sleep. Most of the time, the screen comes on as it is supposed to, but once in a while the computer resumes but the backlight is off. It is not just turned down to the lowest brightness setting, it is all the way off. I can read the screen only if I take a flashlight and shine it on the screen and look very closely. Most of the time, it is just easier to go to another machine and use ssh to restart.
I'm not familiar with how the suspend/resume process works, so I don't really know where to look for configuration options. It seems like there are a number of different places, but how they work together, I don't know....
Neither the keyboard brightness adjustment nor echoing values to /proc/acpi/video/VGA/LCDD/brightness have any effect, though these do work to change the brightness when the backlight is on.
I took a look in /usr/lib/hal/scripts/linux/hal-system-power-suspend-linux, which shows the following options.

The laptop is several years old and has had the lcd display replaced a year or two ago. It is possible that it is a hardware failure, but I lean away from that because a restart always brings the screen up fine, as does closing and opening the lid (which blacks the screen, no suspend).

Sep 16, 2010I am running Lenny of a Dell Mini 10, using only the console. I want to get the resolution smaller that 80 on the horizontal axis, but I can't find the right setting for vga in /boot/grub/menu.lst.
Inserting various values makes the dell give me list of possible video modes at boot, but none of these are higher than 80xSomething. It offers VESA modes that are choosing these results in unreadably tiny text, and anyway I wouldn't know how to edit in order to make these mode take effect automatically.
Can anyone tell give me a value that works for vga on Dell Mini 10 that produces a smaller resolution that 80xSomething? If not, can someone suggests a different way to obtain the same result?

Aug 21, 2015A friend gave me an HP Mini 110 that I can actually use in some situations. I installed Debian 8 with LXDE. It runs well except for the expected lack of driver for the Broadcom 4312 wireless chip. I installed wl using the method shown at [URL] ....
It works fine except that it takes very long to set up WiFi at boot (1 min 30 sec or more every boot--this is a rather frail Atom processor) and the WiFi reception seems poor (65% from an excellent router at 25 feet).
I'm thinking of getting a Panda 300Mbps Wireless N USB Adapter (reportedly using the Ralink RT5372 chipset) and removing the Broadcom driver. I have 2 questions:
1. Could I expect the Panda not to slow my boot time so much? I'm not knowledgeable enough to tell whether there is stable kernel support of this device, although the manufacturer says repeatedly that it works with most Linux distributions.
2. To remove wl is Code: Select allmodprobe -r wl the correct approach?

Jul 6, 2011I have downloaded and installed a mini-httpd on my Debian 2.6.32 and its running on port 80.I have some webpages that I have stored in the /usr/share/mini-httpd/html directory.I am able to access those webpages from my machine(i.e.localhost).But I am unable to access it from another machine within the network.I have tried editing the iptables rules but in vain.The problem is,in my company we use a proxy server to browse the net and when I try to access the webpage on my machine from another system(by giving myipaddress/webpage.html),it shows the error message that proxy server is refusing any connections to the server.

Jan 2, 2011I've installed Debian using the boot.img.gz file onto the jump drive, as well as Linux mint and crunchbang with unetbootin all to no avail; pressing F9 at bios startup refuses to show the jump drive. Booting from the drive is enabled (as far as I can see) in the BIOS.
