when I move the cursor over things or open menu's I hear a little sound inside my computer... ALMOST like its writing to disc,but the hard drive light indicates otherwise.
View 3 RepliesI can't hear the music playing on my speakers, BUT i can hear the music playing in my headphones when i insert my headphones jack.
I have tried configuring aslamixer, tried configuring the sound devices but nothing seems to work. i have also installed a lot of music players such as asla player, audacity and so on. i also tried configuring the aslamixer from the terminal but it did's work as well.
I must add that i have linux ubuntu netbook remix 9.10 i386 installed and windows xp home edition sp3. In windows, i have no problem playing any sound. (I am new to linux <2 days> but very experimented with windows <17 years>).
I have a dualboot installation of Linux and its commercial rivals.I noticed that Linux makes great hard disk noise that I was not able to hear while using Windows.Is it due to filesystem?

View 2 Replies View RelatedThis is a weird and persistent bug that I've been having. It's persisted across multiple distros (Arch and Debian) and is currently making my computer only usable without sound. I'm beginning to think it's the hardware.
Anyway, the hardware is a Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro laptop. I'm currently running Debian 8. The crackling noise begins shortly after I log in - it happens regardless of whether the audio is muted, or whether anything is currently playing. It's a very, very loud noise - on the level of a vacuum cleaner or similar (maybe, these things are hard to estimate). It sounds sort of like a fast series of crackling pops. If I put the machine to sleep with the power button the crackling will go away for a little bit after I resume - I haven't timed it or anything but I imagine that it takes 30 seconds to start up again (after the computer has woken from sleep).
I can completely eliminate the problem by doing the following:

It started happening on Arch after a pretty standard install (i3wm with Xorg, browser, terminal emulator, etc) and I suspected that I had misconfigured something, so I installed Debian - I know other Debian users with this laptop who have not had this issue, and so I figured the default settings would treat me better. No such luck - it started happening again on the clean Debian install. One detail - both installs (the Arch install and the Debian one) use full disk encryption (lvm on LUKS) but I can't think of how that would affect it.
My only thought is that it's some weird power saving mode issue - the soundcard isn't used for a bit, so it cycles to a lower power state, and the bad thing happens.
When I use my ubuntu computer to watch some movies that are encoded into 5.1 sound I can't hear the voices of the people in the movie. I guess that is because the voices are put on the front speaker and I have connected the computer to an stereo-amplifier.
I mainly use XBMC and have noticed the problem there but I have also tried VLC and noticed the same problem there. In xbmc I checked the box "Downmix multichannel audio to stereo" but it doesn't work.
I use a standard ubuntu 10.04 64-bit install that was upgraded from a 9.10 install.
I upgraded to 11.04 today, and ever since the upgrade my speakers (and headphones; any audio device) emit a high-pitched shriek when connected to the computer. This only happens after I enter my password on the login screen, and only in Ubuntu. There's no problem when I boot Windows.
The sound is very high pitched and my speakers play no other generated sounds while emitting this static. Obviously, I'd like to be able to have sound and listen to my music, so this needs to be fixed.

Problem is when srv01 has problems and is taken offline from the network, all the pc01-pc20 computers freeze, you can move the mouse but the menus don't work, you can go restart or shutdown either. only solution at this time is to turn it off or restart through the button on the pc case.

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) with Skype, and I can't get the microphone to work. I can hear them, but they can't hear me. I tried the same headset with my Windows system, and it works fine, so the headset is OK.
I looked at "Sound Preferences", and noticed that when I click on the "Input" tab, the area where you can adjust the volume is set at the minimum, and grayed out, so I can't adjust it.
After playing one of the kde games in squeeze- breakout - which I had a hard time exiting - and even after I restarted the computer the cursor will not go to the lower left corner of the desktop, where the kde menu button is.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm running Fedora 14. I'm running a Athlon X2 with 4gb memory and nVidia 8400. I'm using the nvidia drivers ver 260. I'm running KDE 4.6. I've disabled desktop effects (when turnt on they work a charm, performance issues are the same either way). If I open any more than a few applications at once, the system grinds to a halt. even working with Kwrite is painful and it can take several seconds just to move the cursor, browsing the file is almost impossible.
When I have even 7 windows open X goes into a frenzy and sticks around 90% cpu usage. Even with no windows open if I move my mouse between screens X cpu usage stays between 50% and 90%. The system is unbearably slow. i have a XP Pro system with the same spec, lower GPU and I have no problems having 2/3 Visual Studios open, Photoshop, a few skype windows, Eclipse and the android emulator the system remains responsive but with this Linux box I can't even do basic stuff in Kwrite without it grinding to a haltJust.
I'm using Mac as a main machine and Ubuntu Netbook as a secondary. Although synergy gives me a good control over Netbook when it works without external monitor, but when I activate VGA monitor, I can only move around the limited region (details are below).
Phenomenon: Cursor can move in the external monitor's screen. No way to move cursor into the netbook's screen via synergy (it's possible from local touchpad/mouse) In the external monitor's screen, curosor moves only within limited region, which I'm guessing is as large as the size of netbook's screen.
Configuration: Use dual screens (uncheck "Same image in all monitors" in the tool "Monitor" on Ubuntu)

View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed the latest Openoffice.org from Openoffice website on an old 8.04 install. I downloaded the 64 bit .deb version for Ubuntu. All went well. OO3.3 runs well. My question is can you use the Ubuntu Open and Save dialogs? The one where you have drives on the left side. All that comes up with this version is a basic Open or Save dialog. The OO that comes with Ubuntu has these menus. Is there anyway to get these with Openoffice downloaded from the OO website?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm fairly new to ubuntu and I've been messing around with customizing my desktop/UI over the past week or so and I must have messed something up. After I got sick of how slow Wallpapoz was to change backgrounds between workspaces (I'm using GNOME) I turned on the Wallpaper plugin in Compiz and turned off the nautilus desktop. That worked great for the backgrounds but now whenever I try to drag windows around the cursor shudders and shakes and the wondows won't move smoothly. I eventually get them to where I want them to go but it's very annoying.
So far, I have re-enabled the nautilus desktop and reinstalled nautilus with synaptic, neither of which did anything.
Whenever I want (for example) save a file from the internet with Firefox, I can't because Firefox does not open the "save as" window of Dolphin. Also, when I want to save my bookmarks in Firefox, I can't because Firefox can not open the "save as..." window.
There is no failure message, no crash, just nothing. Like as the request is simply ignored. Any Ideas what might be wrong in my system? The system is OpenSuse 11.3 64 Bit with KDE 4.6 and all current updates.
Does this happen to anyone else?
For example, sometimes when I create a bookmark in Chrome, you click the Folder button to have it popup a list of folders where you can put the bookmark. Sometimes clicking this causes it to pop open and stay open. Other times clicking it opens it for a second and then it immediately closes. To be able to select a folder when its acting like this I have to click and hold the mouse button and then select what I want while continuing to hold the button. This doesn't only happen in Chrome. Sometimes it happens while setting ubuntu settings in the OS itself or in other applications.
Is this a bug? Why is the behavior inconsistent?
I am running 10.04 and I have a serious problem with the Open office menus and tool bars, as you can see from the screenshot, they are corrupted. I have tried totally removing and re-installing Oo, but with no joy.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've basically gone and messed up my entire desktop. The curious (idiotic) me was experimenting with the desktop, and went and somehow deleted all the panels. After 3 days of frustration, I've been unable to recover any form of menu or panel. So far, I've tried restoring the defaults from the terminal. Unfortunately, I can't open a terminal window. I can run it using Ctrl+Alt+F2, but it refuses to open any windows or run any programs. Most commands give me some form of 'cannot open display.' I can't minimize windows without losing them so my workspace is a mess, I can't run nautilus as root so I can't access Synaptic, and the list basically goes on and on.

I am trying to run a service that listens to a port for instructions from a Windows box. It is called timetobackupservice. I use the following command to run the service ./timetobackupservice from a command line. It seems to run, indicates which port it is listening to, but then hangs up. When I move the cursor, it "enters" a bunch of odd characters and I have to close the command line window. When I check to see if the service is listening to the port (netstat -tulnap) it shows that it is not listening.

Many apps are fine, like Firefox, gimp and thunderbird, but OO is scrogged up. I also noticed that Quanta has unintelligible sub menus although the top level menus are readable. The lists of files in Quanta are gray blocks, but if you click on a folder, the file names appear, then chaneg back to gray blocks if you click the folder again. Tried reinstalling Quanta but no success.
My cursor blinks when hovering over the likes of web page tabs and disappears behind open windows especially if im in system settings its hard to know where my cursor is sometimes, its really putting me off and i don't want to install different distro because of it, i really like debian even being beginner with debian.
