Ubuntu Installation :: What's Up With Scary Beep Sound And Long Boot Up Delay?

Jul 18, 2011

I have a Macbook 5,2, on which I'm triple booting OS X - Linux - Windows, using bootcamp and rEFIt.I had a variation of Ubuntu 10.04 called Uber Student as the linux installation.I installed Ubuntu 11.04 AMD64 instead, by choosing the EFI boot option. Now this gave me some problems. When I shot down, the Macbook gives me a troubling long beep sound. When I start up, I'm still able to boot up into rEFIt and Grub2, but there is a big delay with the screen being black for about 30 seconds and the little white light in the left corner of the Macbook is blinking feverishly. I read something about a guy which had a similar problem and the process seemed to mess up the firmware on his Macbook, so he had to have his MB changed.

What's up with the scary beep sound and the long boot up delay?Secondly, when I want to do an update of the Ubuntu system, the update manager asks me to do a partial upgrade, which includes removing the grub-EFI, resulting in a system that won't boot...

Ubuntu :: No Sound After Upgrade From Karmic Koala To Lucid System / Get That Back?

May 28, 2010

Last Monday I upgraded the Ubuntu from Karmic Koala to Lucid Lynx in my laptop (HP Compaq volna 515), and I have no sound. Searching in linux forums for an answers, I've got that (as far as I understand) there's no unique solution for this problem.

This is my lspci code...

Also, I tried to clean up the pulse audio .. What is funny for me is that pulse audio and alsa, and the audio players seems to work normally (no error of device not found or something like that).. except that there's no sound out from the speakers.

Any suggestion to discover if the problem is drivers, kernel, packages, or hardware failure? more important, how do I get the sound back?

General :: Use Wav/ogg Sound Instead Of PC Speaker Beep?

Jan 12, 2010

This may seem like a stupid question (if not completely ridiculous ), but I was wondering if there's a way to configure audio events so that I can use a wav/ogg sound instead of the PC speaker's default beep for small events like hitting backspace in a text editor when it's the beginning of the document (or any other illegal keyboard action), or in Wine applications when it calls for an "asterisk" sound (it just beeps the PC speaker).

I've looked at similar threads, but they mainly just talk about either the beeps that the machine does when it boots up, or simply turning off the beeping completely. What I want to do is substitute the beeps (that are caused by the OS) for an actual sound that's played through the ALSA/OSS/whatever audio device.

Ubuntu :: System Beep Won't Stop

I have a HP Laptop with Ubuntu Hardy installed. The system beep makes rapid clicking sound at login window that slowly dissipate and clicking that, so far I can only fix by rebooting, when I play music, reboot after hibernating, and when waking up from suspend. Ubuntu :: Karmic Re-enable System Beep

Feb 24, 2010

I like the system beep because I can tell checkgmail to beep when an email comes, that way my speakers don't have to be on.Anyways, I did a fresh install of Karmic the other day. Something is being weird with me when I try to re-enable the beep. Karmic blacklisted pcspkr in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf . Here's what happens:I leave "blacklist pcspkr" in blacklist.conf and restart. I do "sudo modprobe pcspkr" and then "beep", and it beeps. Good.

Then I comment out "blacklist pcspkr" in blacklist.conf and restart. I do "beep". Nothing. I do "sudo modprobe pcspkr" and then "beep". Nothing. I do "lsmod | grep pcspkr". It's listed there as it should be. I check with "sudo grep pcspkr /var/log/dmesg" and find no errors.

Ubuntu Installation :: No Sound After Upgrade To Lucid?

May 11, 2010

I upgraded successfully last night from Hardy Heron to Lucid Lynx, but have no sound now. After searching around I can see that this is a fairly common problem. But none of the proposed solutions that work for other people have yet worked for me.

If I type 'alsamixer' at the command line, everything looks fine. There are no 'MM's indicating something being muted. I tried removing and reinstalling alsamixer and pulseaudio with no success. Edited lines 45 and 46 of /etc/pulse/default.pa with no luck.

Ubuntu Installation :: No Sound In Lucid After Install?

May 26, 2010

I upgraded to Lucid from Jaunty on a 3 1/2 year old toshiba Satellite by doing a clean install. There is no sound anywhere. I had no sound problems with Jaunty. I ran the alsa upgrade script from this site:

[URL]

There was no change I could see after this was done.

In sound preferences>
hardware--there are no entries;
input--the input volume is shaded
output--the entry is Dummy Output stereo

The alsamixer shows only the pcm control, there are no capture controls. In select sound card (F6) I selected HDA ATI SB (default was only other choice). I have Linux Mint 9 (based on Lucid) on a Dell mini-9 and the sound works.

Debian Multimedia :: System Beep Doesnt Work Anymore?

Nov 21, 2010

I have a problem which is a great inconvenience to me. I want to say that I've been searching for the answer for a week and couldn't find anything but problems similar to mine which were unresolved.I used to have debian lenny, but one day i decided to reinstall my operating system and upgraded to sid, so I have a fresh install of debian sid with gnome.
The system beep no longer works on gnome.

What I mean, when i move to terminal(like ctrl+alt+f1) it works great, it also works when i type 'beep' in gnome-terminal. but it doesnt make a sound when i e.g. press ctrl+G, when i am being called on irssi, when i press backspace in gnome-terminal. These things used to work in Lenny, and I really need them (especially this hiliting in irssi). I would go back to Lenny if i didnt need some software that is not present for that version of debian. The pcspkr module is loaded

Ubuntu Installation :: System Will Not Boot After Lucid Upgrade

May 2, 2010

I have an AMD64 system, which I recently upgraded to Lucid 10.04. The system now fails to boot after the upgrade. Recovery mode makes no difference.

When I attempt to boot, I get a series of messages about file systems needing checking, and also some messages from ureadahead-other. (process terminated status 4), though a post here says that status 4 is in fact not an error.

I have sucessfully booted the Lucid desktop install CD in live CD mode, mounted the filesystems, and started parts of my system in a chroot. In that system I tried running an update, and removing plymouth, but it made no difference. how I can get my system working.

I did take a backup of /etc before I upgraded, so I could get back to a karmic install, but the pain in doing so would be considerable, so I would prefer to avoid that if possible.

Ubuntu Installation :: No Boot Splash In Lucid On System With ATI Graphics Card?

May 7, 2010

I have been unable to get the fancy purple bootsplash (plymouth) since I installed Lucid Lynx on my ThinkPad T43. The bootsplash would up when I had booted off of a Live CD, but all future instances post-install only shows the blinking terminal cursor, followed by the GNOME log in screen. This has occurred after upgrading from Karmic, and after attempting a fresh installation of Lucid. Here's what I've tried so far without success:

comment out "GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0" in the grub file tried running echo FRAMEBUFFER=y > /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/splash update-initramfs -u under su but it did not work because my conf.d directory doesn't contain a file called "splash", but only one file called "resume". This fix was taken from [URL]..A Google search showed that a lot of users with this problem have NVIDIA cards; however I'm running ubuntu on a system with an ATI card.
