Debian Multimedia :: System Beep Doesnt Work Anymore?
Nov 21, 2010I have a problem which is a great inconvenience to me. I want to say that I've been searching for the answer for a week and couldn't find anything but problems similar to mine which were unresolved.I used to have debian lenny, but one day i decided to reinstall my operating system and upgraded to sid, so I have a fresh install of debian sid with gnome.
The system beep no longer works on gnome.
What I mean, when i move to terminal(like ctrl+alt+f1) it works great, it also works when i type 'beep' in gnome-terminal. but it doesnt make a sound when i e.g. press ctrl+G, when i am being called on irssi, when i press backspace in gnome-terminal. These things used to work in Lenny, and I really need them (especially this hiliting in irssi). I would go back to Lenny if i didnt need some software that is not present for that version of debian. The pcspkr module is loaded

Jan 4, 2010After upgrading Jaunty to Karmic internet sharing (iptables) stoped working. Nothing in iptables configuration was changed. Computers behind my ubuntu router can ping it, have access to it (apache, samba, etc.). Only internet isnt forwarding. Clients configuration is the same as before upgrade.

Jan 4, 2009I have installed Fedora 8 on an old PC to use as a home network and I am having trouble getting a Windows PC running XP to get through to the internet, but I am able to access the internet from the Linux box with no issues. I can ping the gateway on eth0 from the Linux box, but I can't ping it from the windows PC. I am able to ping the IP address for eth0 from the Windows PC. My internet gateway is a modem/router from Hughes net. I also have a Netgear router between the Linux box and the Windows PC, but there doesn't appear to be any issues because I can ping both NICs from the Windows PC. I've got a new HP Compaq Mini 110c-1110SD.
I've booted Ubuntu UNR 10.04 Beta2 from a USB stick and at first it seemed like everything worked so I installed it (dual boot with the installed Win XP which works fine, no network problems)
But .. I forgot to check if internet worked. Since I don't have a wireless, I plugged in a cable and the Auto eth0 showed up as connected.
Looks good, but I can't get internet to work. Local browsing on my LAN works ok, but getting on the internet doesn't work neither does apt-get so updating is a problem too.
Strangely enough, ping does work ...
I thought it had to do with UNR being a beta, so I've booted from a live UNR 9.10 usb stick, but same problem, no wired internet.
I'm totally stumped. I've been running Ubuntu since 2007 on several PC's and never had any problems with networking.
So, how do I fix this ?

May 14, 2010I have no idea how I managed this, but I am able to connect to the internet but NetworkManager doesn't show any connection. This means that until I kill it, I cannot log in with Pidgin, because it is waiting for a connection.
Do I disable NetworkManager completely or do I try to make it recognize that I am connected to the Internet? If the latter, then how should I go about? (Please let me know which files I need to show you, because I know I've messed around with a couple).
Debian Multimedia :: Alsactl Restore Doesn't Work In Rc.local / Sort It?
Oct 21, 2010Every time I boot my machine, some of the playback values in alsamixer are set to 0 and are muted, so I have no sound.
The thing is, I have tried setting these to normal levels and then run sudo alsactl store. Then, if I run sudo alsactl restore after I reboot, the sound comes back up. However, if I have alsactl restore in /etc/rc.local, it doesn't work: I still get muted sound when I reboot. I have to run sudo alsactl restore manually each time.
I have already checked whether /etc/rc.local runs at startup, and it does. Also, I know that /var/lib/alsa/asound.state contains the correct values, because when I run sudo alsactl restore, the sound returns to normal levels. So what remains is either alsactl restore doesn't work in /etc/rc/local, or something runs after it and mutes the sound.
Hardware :: Promise Tx4650 RAID Card Does Not Work In Debian 6.0 / Sort It?
Mar 3, 2011I have just installed Debian 6.0 and it does not seem to recognize my Promise Tx4650 RAID controller.
I have created a dual boot with WinXP 64. Windows sees my two RAID one arrays correctly (as two logical drives).
In debian I see four physical drives in file browser.
I contacted Promise tech support and they said that the only Linux they support is SUSE, but they did send me some source code to compile.
This problem is complicated by my newness to Linux and Debian.
Here are some specific questions:
1] Is there any debian package that is known to support the Promise Tx4650?
2] Where can I see if my Tx4650 is recognized?
3] If I have to compile it into the kernel, where are the directions for how to do that?

I've added 4.4.4.4 and 8.8.8.8 to /etc/resolv.conf for good measure FF its configured NOT to use a proxy ( Im fed up looking and checking !) and ive tried the 'detect settings automatically'this is a 'mission critical' step. Going to linux is a big enough change , so getting FF working will be a deal-breaker

General :: Internet Explorer Not Downloading Files From System Server / Work Around This?
Jan 27, 2010I have a very simple php web application deployed on linux (centOS4) machine. It creates a file and stores the file in /tmp folder on my linux machine. The path for this file is specified in the href attribute of the link. Ideally when we click this link the download manager should pop up so that the file can be downloaded on client machine.
When i access this website remotely from my window xp machine on firefox it downloads the file properly but when i run on internet explorer (i have IE7 on my windows XP) and click the link, the download manager does'nt pop's up. even when i right-click that link and select save as, an error message pop's up saying "file path not found". possibly IE is not able to determine the linux file path .so how do i work around this. is there some specific way for specifying the linux file paths to be downloaded by IE?

I understood that raw1394 and video1394 modules are now deprecated. So firewire_ohci and firewire_core are loaded when I plug in the camera. There is no more /dev/raw1394 and /dev/video-0 streams, but now there are /dev/fw0 and /dev/fw1.

I can change to just about any dir of my file system with cd /filename/
eg cd /var/ or cd /opt/
it will skip me up or down the tree to get there but when if go cd /Desktop/or cd /myuseraccount/
is get: bash: cd: /Desktop/: No such file or directory

Aug 22, 2010I have a computer that i wish to install ubuntu 10.04 on, it wont install tho, it tells me that it cant detect the cd rom (the drive it is booting from) and that i should insert a removable device with the drivers on it, except i dont have those and don't know where to get them. i cant boot from a usb but i have a usb with 10.04 on it just incase. i tryed this with both alternate install and desktop. i dont know what to do, i have invested 2 days to try and do this and i would really like to put this on my computer.
I have previously installed 8.04 on my computer with out such error and all of the hardware is the same (even the hard drive), and i lost the 8.04 disk. <(it was a live disk)
Ubuntu :: Auto-login Doesnt Work ?
Apr 28, 2011I am running xubuntu 11.04 (ISO from early this week). During install, I selected to NOT auto login but to present this gdm panel where I have to enter the password (or other users could log in).
Now I decided to enable auto-login (and to start the screensaver right afterwards) ... so I opened up the "login screen settings" (systems menu), unlocked that window and changed it to "login as xxx".
Then i rebooted and would have expected to be greeted with my screen saver on a logged-in session afterwards. But what happens is that there is a gdm panel sitting ... showing me

Where the first item wont do anything.
So I have to select other and enter user name + password ?
Is that how it is supposed to work?

Feb 28, 2010my printer is not listed the type of drivers it mentions to download in plug and play.the drivers listed dont come close to the number(465cn).I have a brother mfc-465cnwhere do i find the drivers that will be compatible. generic diver listed didnt work or other numbers listed under the 'brother' or 'mfc' brandI went to the open printer website and my printer isnt listed there either. just brother and some other mfc's but nothing near what my printer is.
