View 2 RepliesI tried recompiling a new kernel yesterday (2.6.34) on my debian sarge box, but I ran into multiple difficulties. These difficulties forced me to do a double dist-upgrade to lenny. The new kernel was (seemingly) compiled without any hiccups, and I ran dpkg -i on both the image and the header debs. They didn't install properly into grub, but I think I managed to fix that manually.Next thing I did was rebooting the server. It refused to come back up. Luckily my ISP has recovery tools, so I managed to switch back to the old kernel. It boots just fine with that kernel, but the problem is that there is no ssh daemon running! I can access it through ftp and do limited jobs through php, but nothing big, as I have no root access.Now, enough backstory. My question is: How can I install openssh-server onto the server remotely? I cannot access the server personally, as the server is in a completely different country.

I have installed Koha on Debian Lenny. It does work well, but I have to manually start the koha-zebra-ctl.sh by entering /usr/share/koha/bin/koha-zebra-ctl.sh start The is, however, that this starts at boot from /etc/init.d/koha-zebra-daemon. Like /etc/init.d/koha-zebra-daemon start (does not work now) In the koha-zebra-daemon file I have:

I have tried checking whether the symbolic link exists with readlink, but this never seems to return anything anywhere.
I had debian lenny running smoothly for a while, then I think the power went out and the computer didn't shutdown smoothly. The next time I started it up I ran into this error: Checking root file system.../etc/rcS.d/S10checkroot.sh: line 274: /sbin/logsave: Permission deniedfailed (code 126)This happens in single user mode as well. I've tried fscking all my partitions but it doesn't help. I've booted in bypassing the normal init and changed the permissions of /sbin/logsave to 777 and during boot I get a message of: The file system check corrected errors on the root partition but requested that the system be restarted. failed!Then the system just reboots automatically without letting me to anything.

I need to reinstall Lenny however if I do that I will loose Karmic Koala in the grub screen because of the new version of grub that comes with Karmic Koala. Which means that I will need to reinstall Karmic Koala after Lenny so that they both appear in the grub screen at startup. If I reinstall only Lenny is it possible to use Gparted to change the boot back to Karmic Koala and have them both in the grub screen again? Or is there another way around it?

View 1 Replies View Relatedi was trying to use gnome and kde but i don't like them. I tried xfce and it seem to fit my needs but.My computer is used to be powered on for a weeks. While time passes, a process xfdesktop begin to use more and more memory and to free RAM i need to log out and log in again.
I tried squeeze yesterday on my virtual machine and it has 4.6 and seem not to have that bug, RAM usage is static(yes it still works when i write this and have memory usage 34492k, which is not changing for an hours of usage already), also 4.6 is MUCH better than 4.4.
i already tried adding squeeze to "sources.list" but i can see too many dependencies which should be upgraded if i install 4.6, i'm beginning to afraid it can crash entire GUI(or entire system, i can see there is libc6 required to be updated).
I hear no login sound when I login to my ubuntu. I checked at startup applications and found GNOME login sound is enabled. The command used there is

i do have a strange problem get running php5 on lenny 64 inside apache2. i had installed it as all instructions on the web does: # apt-get install php5 libapache2-mod-php5 php5-cli php5-common php5-cgi
apt has enabled php automatically, so

View 14 Replies View RelatedI have added a 10 Mbps network card to my SGI O2 MIPS workstation running Debian Lenny running the 26-2 kernel. The workstation already has an onboard NIC which is working fine.(eth0).
lspci -v shows ths card as:-00:03.0 Ethernet controller: Compex ReadyLink 2000 (rev 0a) Flags: medium devsel, IRQ 18 I/O ports at 1800 [disabled] [size=32] Upon googling I found out that this card is an NE2000 clone. I downloaded the latest 2.6.36 kernel sources and did the following:-
1. Make Menuconfig
2. Loaded an alternate kernel config file (my working kernel config file)
3. In DeviceDrivers->Network device support->Ethernet (10 or 100 Mbit)
I selected ASIX AX88796 as the help associated with this showed it as an NE 2000 clone. configured it to be a module and did make, make_modules and make_install. Edited /etc/Modules to load ax88796 and added an alias eth1 ax88796 to this file. copied the new kernel to the /boot and did a reboot, the machine booted up fine and udev -r showed the 2.6.36 kernel and lsmod showed ax88796 loaded. But, Iam not able to bring up eth1 using:-
ifup eth1
The error messages given are:-
SIOCSIFADDR: No such device
eth1: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device
SIOCSIFNETMASK: No such device

I installed debian etch on my system. Installation done successfully, but when it boots up the X server is not starting and showing error. Note : It is perfectly working with debian lenny. Configuration : Intel DG41RQ ,1GB Ram ,160GB HDD.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install Debian/Lenny on a iBook clamshell. I couldn't seem to burn an install CD that the iBook would recognize, so I eventually copied the contents of the CD onto a self-powered USB drive and I can now get the iBook to boot off of that thru open firmware. However, when I get to the Debian installer main menu, it still won't read the CD, and apparently it does not have network drivers to install over Ethernet. Is there any way I can supply a driver for the ethernet interface (lspci reports that its a sun GEM ethernet interface) or somehow convince the installer to install from the content of the USB drive (which is a duplicate of what's on the installer CD)? Heck, if it'd be easier to get the Airport interface running to reach the Internet I'd be up for that too.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI don't get a UI login prompt at startup and it makes a sound. I'm using 10.04, though this did happen to me in 9.0x as well. When I press ctrl-alt-F1, I login and sudo gdm stop and do sudo startx this seems to put me at root and there is an error with the applets and the panel does not load. "Killall gnome-panel" does not fix it.
If I simply do startx (w/o going to root), it goes to a black screen and if I press ctrl-alt-F1 it repeats "No protocol specified" until I get the error message xinit: Resource file temporary unavailable (errno 11): unable to connect to Xserver.
Always was alright until I installed RVM and ruby 1.9.2.After this I rebooted my PC and just got default wallpaper and NO LOGIN PROMT...I tried CTRL+ALT+F1 and:
- startx ===> already running
- gdm ====> already running
-also tried dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

I recently switched from KDE to Gnome, and when i setup Kubuntu I checked "Do not require login at startup", so i didnt get the screen. When i switched to gnome, it still didnt show it, and for various reasons i want the login screen at startup. I am running Ubuntu 10.10.

I want to run a script after user login (graphical - GNOME login). In fact I want to change the wireless ip address immediately after user login. If I run the script from /etc/rc.local it's not good because it seems to be run before user login (the wireless connection and dhclient are run after login).
Where can I run a script after X user login?
I don't want to remove gnome-network applet.
I recently installed akmod-nvidia followed the guide to the t. I revolted and everything worked fine. Now when I startup it goes through all of the services and lists them as ok including the nvidia driver. But at the end it just stops and the text flickers a little bit. Also when I try to do anything with yum I get the cannot retrieve metadata error.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm a beginner with Linux. I'm using the version of Ubuntu 10.10 installed in a notebook HP Pavilion tx 2000 (Turion 64 x2). My Ubuntu is 32 bits.
I'm passing for the following situation:
When I turn on my notebook, if it is running on battery (even with the battery has 100% of charge), a login / password screen does not appear, and the screen goes dark and nothing more I can do (that I knew!). So I re-start the machine.
However, if the notebook is plugged into electrical energy (with or without battery), a login / password appears normally.
If, with the notebook plugged into electrical energy, I log in Ubuntu operating system, then great. After loaded the operating system, I can turn off electrical energy and the notebook works normally (only with battery). In other words, just the login screen that is with this electrical energy problem.
Upon booting this morning, my Ubuntu 11.04 install no longer shows the login window at startup. The background is still there, as well as the on-screen keyboard I have set to appear at startup. tty1-6 all work just fine, although they they dont automatically connect to wifi so i have to go wired (or learn how to connect to wifi via tty1) if i need to use the internet for this. Before this issue popped up, I had tried out xmonad and upon switching back to compiz, I have to run "compiz --replace" every time I log in which may have something to do with this problem. I also installed and uninstalled gnome 3 before that, so I may have broken something with all that.

I've tried the following...
gnome-screensaver-command --lock
/usr/bin/gnome-screensaver-command --lock
Neither of these seem to work from the Sessions gui. Although from terminal I can run gnome-screensaver-command --lock with no problems.
I installed Debian Lenny on my old IBM thinkpad R40e but i can't change the brightness either with the Fn keys or with the brightness control debian has. i have searched around and it seems to be a problem with linux on IBM thinkpads but i don't know that much about this sort of thing so any help would be appreciated. if you need any more info then just ask.
