Debian Multimedia :: Squeeze (Xfce4 Archiver) Can't Open Files?
Dec 23, 2010This is about the Squeeze (0.2.3-8) archiver in Debian Squeeze. I may be missing a dependency, but is Squeeze incapable of opening files inside archives? I created a generic archive with "tar -cvf arxiv.tar file01.txt" and Squeeze segfaults when I try to double click to open the file (file01.txt) stored in the archive (arxiv.tar).
Also, after experimenting with Squeeze on the command line, it seems the "-n" option works, but results in an orphaned gui window; the "-x" option will only extract to a directory which already exists (which is o.k., but should be documented); and the "-d" option doesn't follow the general syntax in the man page "squeeze [OPTION...] [archive name]", which isn't bad, but sure does make it unnecessarily cumbersome to use, and also, the gui runs (blinks for a split section) for no clear reason. Now it would be silly to use command line squeeze over tar, but the man page for Squeeze begins with: "Squeeze - modern and advanced archive manager for Xfce".
I would like a gui archiver/extracter to use with Xfce4 without all the QA problems. Unless I'm doing something really wrong, this software doesn't seem to be ready for release at all, and the upstream version has not changed in a long time.

The latter fails, it prompts "File exists" i.e.

Apr 3, 2010After upgrading to Squeeze, which comes with kernel 2.6.32, my system encountered DRM error and booted up with a blank screen. This happened intermittently. Searches on the Web did not give a definite answer. It seemed there was a bug in the kernel and this was cleared since 2.6.31 but I am using 2.6.32.

Oct 2, 2015I have new hardware (Nvidia Geforce GTX 960) which required new drivers. I'm running jessie but had to install the driver version 352.30 from the experimental repo. Everything seems to work fine, except after a suspend. On resume, the X server exists with errors, and I'm dropped back to the Linux console.
I've done a fair amount of searching, but the problem most people seem to have is corruption or black screen. I'm getting something equally annoying but less severe: I just get dropped back to the shell, but as soon as I restart the X server with startx everything continues to work... until the next suspend.
My full Xorg.0.log is at [URL] .... . Here are the errors that appear after the suspend:

Debian :: Grub Error On Squeeze
May 4, 2010I installed squeeze with 2 drives, one for squeeze (2.6.32-3-amd64 using 120GB hdd), and one for my old winxp. I used LVM with ext4 on /root, /home, and ext2 for /boot. The install gave me grub 1.98.
When booted, screen says

Feb 13, 2011I just got Squeeze loaded on computer and getting several error message during boot up. Something about 368623 and 368761 PCI Bar 6 collision. This is a first for me on Debian OS. It happens so fast I can barely write it down. Is there a log I can access to see the entire entry?

Mar 1, 2010On a fresh install of squeeze, I can't log in to an AIM account with being immediately disconnected and given this error: You have been connecting and disconnecting too frequently. Wait ten minutes and try again. If you continue to try, you will need to wait even longer.
I waited for several hours before trying to reconnect, but got the same message. Searching for the error led me to some bug reports from upwards of three years ago.
Strangely, this error hasn't occurred on any of my other squeeze systems.
I can ping login.oscar.aol.com as well as login.messaging.aol.com; both resolve to 205.188.251.43 for me. I tried changing the "Server" under "Advanced" to this address, but again I got the same error.

I'm getting "Can't open display" all the time when I log in the server through ssh.

Nov 14, 2010I tried to install Debian-Squeeze 64-bit from CD [URL] as I thought mistakenly my cpu has 64 bit support. Ofcurse proccess stoped as the kernel wasn't compatible, but only when I removed the 'quiet' parameter I could see the error, when the 'quiet' parameter was passed, process gave no visible error,just stop in the start screen of debian-installer.

Debian Installation :: Squeeze- Grub Can't Dual Boot -ntoskrnl.exe Error
Jun 7, 2010I cannot count how many times I have re-installed squeeze, and do all kinds of fixes to grub, but no joy. Every time, there is this ntoskrnl.exe error, and to re-install it. I thought my WIN XP may be corrupted, so I reinstalled it, and updated it with sp3 and all updates. Then I re-installed squeeze (reformatting all partitions). At the end, the installer ask if I want to install grub to mbr. I replied yes. After reboot, only the 2.6.32.3-amd64 and the recovery kernels show up on the grub screen, no winxp.OK, I booted into squeeze kernel and looked at the /boot/grub/grub.cfg file, and there winxp is not included in /etc/grub.d/30_os-prober section. In terminal, I typed
#os-propber and it found winxp in /dev/sda1
then I typed
#update-grub
and now /etc/grub.d/30_os-prober now show winxp.I rebooted, and winxp shows on the grub screen, and I chose winxp.It came back with "ntoskrnl.exe ...error... re-install ntoskrnl..."Here are the details:

Debian Installation :: Squeeze Grub2 Error 15 With LVM2 Encrypted Disk?
Feb 9, 2011This is my specific solution to my specific problem. After updating to Squeeze from my prior Lenny distro (amd64 with whole disk encrytion using LVM2, dm-crypt, LUKS) everything went well - at first. I was duped like so many, thinking that all was well and I could remove the legacy-grub (aka: Grub1) and just use grub-pc (aka: Grub2). As soon as I removed the legacy-grub and rebooted my laptop, I was confronted with:
GRUB Loading stage1.5 GRUB loading, please wait..Error 15 At this point I wasn't sure if it was a Grub problem or a deeper encryption problem - especially after reading that some people had missing packages in Squeeze (lvm2, dm-setup, initramfs-tools, etc.)
Okay, the solution for me.
1. download and burn to disk: debian-live-6.0.0-amd64-rescue.iso[URL]..
2. scroll to and press enter/return on: text rescue
3. choose a root directory - for example: /dev/blah/root (I wrote down the list of possible /dev/.... for reference - this helped me remember where and what I had partitioned in Lenny)
4. choose: Execute a shell in /dev/blah/root
5. once in the shell, I discovered I needed to mount a few of those partitions that I had written down in order to get access to grub-probe, update-grub, grub-install, etc. You may not have to if your partitions are minimal. I you need to use other partitions, type (for example):

Debian Installation :: Squeeze Dist-upgrade Exited With Error Continue From?
Apr 21, 2011I was upgrading from lenny to squeeze. At the apt-get dist-upgrade step, at some point (after upgrading and configuring) it tried to create a new certificate for my mail server but creation of the certificate failed, dpkg reported an error and the whole process exited with error. So I rebooted the machine and issued again apt-get dist-upgrade but now the certificate was created successfully . After that it upgraded mysql-client and the process finished.
But I don't know if configuring of the upgraded packages has stopped at the point where dpkg stopped. I suppose so, because very few packages were configured at that point. Is the solution to run dpkg-reconfingure -a (or -u ?) or dpkg --confingure -a or something else ? (dpkg has the PACKAGE STATES)
dpkg --configure --pending gives me no package for configuration.PS: At least I hope that all packages were upgraded and a few were not configured. Is there a way to confirm that all packages were upgraded ?

Apr 27, 2010I need files to be <= 5GB to put on S3. Right now I have an ugly tar / gzip / cut before upload, then cat / zcat / tar on download, but it's really ugly - and nearly every archiver should support archive splitting right? What's the best way?

May 14, 2011The message above occurred with GEdit running in background and while attempting to use yahoo mail in Iceweasel. System froze and I rebooted.
While Iceweasel has been the browser used the most since installing the system and has been the program in use during the freezes, Epiphany was also tested and was far less functional, with rendering failures occurring with nearly each modification of a page, though not all fatal. With Epiphany, re-rendering and reloading of a page was only accomplished by using my mouse wheel, other input methods left a gray, unusable screen.
My installation was complicated by the following factors and goals: dual-boot capability with the idea of loading another linux flavor such as Ubuntu onto a partition. retain 2 "legacy" ReiserFS data partitions used under Debian Etch. use 1 ReiserFS partition as /home
What suggestions do you all have on stopping these system freezes and errors?
Other possibly useful factors:
I chose "Expert" (graphical) install as it seemed the only way to enable dual-boot capability.
I loaded the ReiserFS compatibility modules during the system install.
I chose the "highlighted" kernel during the install out of 4 choices. The kernel I chose is Linux version 2.6.32-5-686 (Debian 2.6.32-31) (ben@decadent.org.uk) (gcc version 4.3.5 (Debian 4.3.5-4) ) #1 SMP Tue Mar 8 21:36:00 UTC 2011 - however I cannot rule out the possibility that one of the other 3 kernels wouldn't have worked better.
I chose to enable the version of the system that had the most options for hardware compatibility instead of a more limited, smaller system customized to my hardware.
The default system settings for inactivity would log me off, as ppropriate. Because of a pattern of problems awakening from sleep mode, on 5/13 3am I changed the log off setting to never to avoid errors when the system should awaken. But still yet another freeze at on 5/13 at 22:49 while multiple windows were open.

All seemed to go well and the installer made me pick a root password and create a normal user account. However, after the first boot my user account did not work and I could also not login as root, it looked liked I forgot the passwords for both accounts. When rebooted in recovery mode, I got Code: sulogin: root account is locked and I was automatically logged in as root without being asked for a password. Then I found out that the normal user account does not exist. I created a user acount and logged into it. I did passwd to set a password, but I got Code: passwd: Authentication token manipulation error Also, there was no home directory for the new user.

Upon bootup, however, I get a scrolling message saying:[ 206.790092] eth0: (71) System Error occurred (2)Not really sure what this is about. I never received this when I had it running Solaris or FreeBSD or even Ubuntu's older SPARC versions.I also know that it's unlikely to be a bad ethernet card, since Debian was network-installed, and I never came across this error before.

Sep 1, 2010"drm_fill_in_dev *ERROR* Cannot initialize the agpgart module". I have this problem during boot-up since i first upgraded to Squeeze n it has not gone away after several upgrades. Web search indicates its a kernel problem but no solution found. Is there a solution for this now?
