I installed Debian Squeeze with no issues. I went to install latest Nvidia driver as done previously with Lenny. Used instructions that worked on lenny from "the trooper" [url]
Downloaded th latest driver for my GeForce 7300 GS vidio card, driver package NVIDIA-Linux-x86-260.19.12.run
Used "method # 2 as described in HOW TO,as it worked perfectly in the past on Lenny. Only syntax I changed was instead of gdm I typed gdm3 as it appears that is the new name for gnome in Squeeze.

Now the trouble showed up, Unfortunatly I can only go off my memory. A question was asked stating that something did not match, it needed a 3 and the driver had a 4 version or somethng of this sort. then it asked if I new what I was doing (and I lied) and selected yes. And whammo, it didn't work. (This question was asked when i did in Lenny and it is working perfectly still on that system). I now can not boot to GUI, I notice when system boots it starts in "S" mode although I select normal boot from grub2.
Not too bad if I got to reinstall as little is on the system. I just want to know what I am missing on the instalation deal or should I be going about this difrently with Squeeze.
I'm a Linux User since 2007. Later, i was an Ubuntu Fanatic User. But my computer is old, and Ubuntu is more slow in every version.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have it installed and running nicely so I am following sqlpython's "How To: Full multimedia in Squeeze" to get my various players playing. sqlpython seems to have been running a KDE environment while I am running Gnome, but that should not make a critical difference.
If I do (as root) apt-get install libdvdcss apt does not find it. Same result for libdvdcss2.
BTW, which of these would be more appropriate for my 64-bit squeeze?

I just installed squeeze on a raid 1 set of partitions via netinst. gde works fine. I have installed kdm and all of its dependencies (I believe), but when I select it and log in, I see the kde startup screen for a moment, then it goes blank, and goes back to the login screen. My /var/log/kdm.log is:

A very quick and straightforward install of Dropbox on Squeeze kde 4..4 without Nautilus dependencies. It worked perfectly for me.

Here's the thing. I don't appear to be getting any 3D accelaration from my video card at the moment.
Having tried many things (which all failed) and making a mess of my computer I have done the following things:
1. Reinstalled Lenny from scratch.
2. Updated sources to point to stable and allowed update manager to do its thing.
I now appear to have a working build of squeeze.
X is up and running fine, but when I check /var/log/xorg it appears that I'm running the NOUVEAU driver, which does not support the 3D functionality of the card.
So... What is the best method for getting the appropriate driver installed?
My last attempt ended up with nvidia-glx fighting with xorg, so I'm hoping that someone will have up to date instructions that I can follow...
I just got done installing Debian Squeeze on a system..Everything seems to work where audio is concerned, except for audacious.I can get streaming music from vlc/totem as well as play music files (mp3, ogg, flac, ect.).I was wondering if anyone else experiences this problem..It should be noted that I have the Debian multimedia repository enabled as well.When running audacious from terminal and trying to open up an mp3 file I get this message:"madplug: open_audio failed: XMMS reverse compatibility output plugin."
View 5 Replies View RelatedMy problem is that I am trying to install nvidia drivers I got integrated card nvidia geforce 6100 nforce and amd x2x64 processor and also squeeze x64, so I downloaded the driver but when I try to top gnome I cant
/etc/init.d/gdm stop it says no such file or directory
So I google it and I found that squeeze has genome 3 so I put:
/etc/init.d/gdm3 stop
and it just appears a black screen just with a prompt but without any shell, I cant sign in debian or do anything it is just a black screen and i try ctrl+alt+f1, f12, f8, space and nothing, I can write but it doesn't response the only thing that I can do is press ctrl+alt+dell and it restart the PC. How can I stop gnome to install my drivers?
1 - Make a clean install of Squeeze.
2- Upgrade to sid
3- Run this command after installing xserver:
aptitude install kdm kde-10n-es kdebase
Then aptitude installs kdm, kdebase... and brasero, metacity, gvfs, gnome-control-center, evolution... (¿?) I only want to install KDE, why aptitude also install all this gnome crap ? And I say crap because I only want to install the KDE desktop, I use Gnome in my laptop =/ If you uncheck install recommends in aptitude you can make a clean KDE install.

It all seems to work, however debuild gave an error about secret keys. Is this a sensible procedure? What happens in the (probably unlikely) event there is another source patch?I've gone to a tiling window manager as the result of the purchase of a wide screen LCD monitor. Just installed squeeze on a new laptop(had been runny Lenny on my older one with no issues, but no sound or wireless on the new one).I decided to install the ATI drive for my Radeon Mobility 4500(or some close revision) because the fan is constantly running and based on some other postings, it seems that it could be the graphics card causing it.Downloaded the driver from ATI's site and it seemed to install fine but when starting X.

I have this PC that came with W7 installed..i am removing it to install Debian Squeeze.I already have burned the 8 DVDs plus the Squeeze Kde CD.AFAIK, BCM 4312 is a proprietary driver, not shipped with Squeeze, but present as source in Unstable..I have already downloaded the files also... will the built *.deb be enough to enable my wireless, or to i still have to do it by hand. remove confilicting modules, build the module, insert it, put it in the corresponding filder. does the deb install do all that, or do i still have to do it, "the good 'ol way"?

I'm currently running a dual boot with windows xp/debian but as soon as I can get everything working, I'm going to turn this into a full linux system. Also my sound doesn't work, but my sound is HD sound that goes via the video card, I have it hooked up HDMI to my LG tv/monitor, sound works fine on xp. I think once I get the video card drivers installed it should possibly fix my sound issues at the same time.
From the wiki page I know the ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 card is no longer supported by the new fglrx driver in squeeze. Is there a way to use the older driver from lenny? I'm on the radeon driver and the glxgrears performance is pretty low.

Would it be possible to install the one from Lenny on Squeeze since Squeeze has newer libraries and such? I know I can't install new stuff with older libraries, but can I install the old stuff with newer libraries? I am at the end of my rope here! I mean ATI sucks and we all know this, but I've always found a Linux/open-source alternative that worked, until Squeeze.

After reboot I don't have X anymoreb) If I choose build packages for Debian testing, the packages are not built. 2) Downloaded the not so latest official drivers. Same as in case 1)3) Tried to install them with the sgfxi script. The script reports a success but still after a reboot, I have no X.4) Tried to apt-get install fglrx-driver package from sid. Todo this I run the following command:

The driver (version 2.20; in the documentation stays that they were tested some of previous versions at Debian 5.04 or like) I found at the Canon's site doesn't wish to be installed at Squeeze, but somehow I succeeded at Ubuntu 10.04 and Ubuntu 10.10...

How to get back to original nouveau driver after failed nvidia driver install?
What probably happened was a wrong nVidia driver install from the repository.. Because never had any problems earlier, but after I installed some nVidia packages, I get this error.
I already tried to remove nvidia driver by
# aptitude purge nvidia-kernel-dkms nvidia-glx
It was successful.
Then I reinstalled Xorg Nouveau driver and all its denpendencies by
# aptitude install xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
It was also successful.
But problem still occurs..
i screwed up a good debian install with wine. before i do it again i want to know what the best way to get and install wine . AMD 64, toshiba L645D laptop with 3G ram. ATI radon openGL . I read several pages and seems they suggest to compile from source (which i can do i think). others say to use aptitude .

I would like to know if anybody using Squeeze has gotten the DCP-8065 driver from the Brother website to work. I am running x64 and have followed the directions precisely (ia32-libs, etc.) but still no dice. I have been using the ubuntu version (brother-cups-wrapper-laser & its dependencies) and that works fine. I just want to know if anybody has gotten this to work and what they did that may have been different from the directions given.
