Debian :: Not Renewing IP When LAN Cable Is Disconnected?
Jul 18, 2010
Whenever I disconnect the LAN cable from my Linux box or reset the router the IP doesn't seem to get renewed and so I'm unable to SSH into it or connected to the webservices it is running. When it boots up it gets an IP fine from DHCP on the router but once the system is up and something changes like the router reboots or cable is disconnected, then this is when the problem occurs.sometimes if you go back to the actual Linux box in my loft and open a terminal and runcd /etc/init.d/./networking restartthis will cause it to get a new IP from the DHCP server but this isn't very convinient and a bit haphazard.

OS: Maverick Ethernet driver: tested with sky2 an sk98lin This has been driving me crazy for the last few months: if I unplug ethernet cable while my laptop is on reconnecting it sometimes does not bring the connection back.
And once ethernet is gone nothing that I try seems to consistently bring it back. Rebooting, disabling/enabling the driver, disabling/enabling NIC in BIOS, changing driver from sky2 to sk98lin, deleting connection from Network Manager, resetting the router - nothing helps. It seems to come back randomly a few weeks later. Once I used live Ubuntu on a USB stick and ethernet came back not only on a live distro but then when I rebooted also on my main OS. But when I tried that trick next time ethernet was missing in the live distro as well.
Also once I was able to revive ethernet but compiling sk98lin driver, blacklisting sky2 and rebooting. Of course next time doing the same routine did not help. The thing is - ethernet works fine with either sky2 or sk98lin and I can unplug the cable and plug it back in most of the time without any issues. But then every so often - bang and I'm stuck with only wireless until ethernet suddenly starts working again.

I want to use a script to renew my IP every 5 minutes. I have a static IP and it seems that when another person enter the same IP address as mine, my IP is stolen and is assigned to him.
I know that Cron is responsible for running a script at some time interval. How can I use that to renew my IP?

We have 20+ Redhat servers on our network and every so often our DHCP server goes down. When it comes back up we have to go around to all of our RedHat servers and restart networking manually. Other OS's (Ubuntu, Windows, etc..) will continually try to get a DHCP lease so that when our DHCP does come back up it requires no work from us for them to get back on the network. But it seems that Redhat only tries once and if it fails it never tries again. Have to go around to 20 different servers (some of them are at remote locations) is less then ideal when this happens. how we can get Redhat to continually try to get a DHCP lease like other OS's?

how I could file share, or make the whole Hard Drive (HDD) accessible to another computer. The two other computers I have are a Toshiba Laptop with Ethernet and USB, and a iMac Intel with Firewire, USB, and Ethernet. Putting these to use along with:
Three Ethernet Cables
Two Printer Peripheral USB Cables
The Two Computers
A 2GB Flash Drive
That is all I can think of right now. I do not want to use CDs. In a way, I would like to do a network boot. So, how do I get the whole HDD visible to the others computers (either/both) and be able to write to it? I want to put Xubuntu on it, and earse the rest of the Hard Drive. The computers getting this are the iMac G3s and the eMac G4. The eMac has 256MB RAM, 40GB HDD, and a 700MHz processor. Two iMacs have 128MB RAM, 40GB HDD, and a 600MHz Processor. The other iMac is the same as the rest but has a 500MHz processor.

How to enable wifi? I downloaded and installed Debian 6.00 and as I couldn't get online with my Tenda USB Wireless Adapter. I downloaded Debian 6.00 again, this time the CD Net Install version with Firmware included. However, the added firmware version of Debian does not find my wireless either. My wireless adopter is shown as Bus 001 Device 003: ID 148f:3072 Ralink Technology, Corp. RT3072 Wireless Adapter. There is a Network Icon in the Panel which when clicked shows "Create New Wireless Network". I have put in my ISP related network and my password and rebooted, but all I get is the message on my desktop:
"The Network Connection has been disconnected."
That isn't very polite, is it? Who has disconnected it and why remains a mystery to everyone except the culprit(s). I think I must have missed a basic step in the Wifi Enabling process. I checked the Use Permissions and everything is fine there, as User I have permissions to use modems and do networking and so forth. Also I should like to try "modprobe" but I see the package isn't in Synaptic Package Manager.

As the title say, I'm having this odd problem, consistently, if I disconnect the USB keyboard from the box, it hangs after initializing md0 (raid of 10 sata disks).. The cursor blinks, but it never gets further, I've had it hanging like that for a day (I started the box before I went to school, and when I got home, I found that it never booted completely)
If I connect the keyboard, the box boots fine..

I did a search and found this link however I remember this being an issue almost two years ago when I installed Debian with a GUI. I have always used it for a server so I never realized this was still an issue until I got my new PC today and went to load Debian / Gnome on it. It showed I was disconnected however I was able to browse the web fine. It appears that so many people have complained about this problem andI am trying to understand if there is a work around and a fix in the near future

For some time my wireless was working perfectly but now if I do something that uses more bandwidth - the connection freezes. Takes a minute when using torrents @400kb/s. Wireless starts to work for some time if I reconnect to router but stops again if the load is same. I don't get disconnected but after it freezes I can't even reach the router by its ip. Any ideas?02:00.0 Network controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) (rev 01)

I'm trying to get some photos off a Canon Powershot SX110IS that uses an SD card (right now there is a Gigaware 4GB one in it) but this computer does not have an SD card input, so I am trying to mount the device through USB. This has worked with a handful of other cameras I've used in the past.
When I connect the camera to the computer and power it on, I get
usb 1-5: USB disconnect, address 7
usb 1-5: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 8
usb 1-5: New USB device found, idVendor=04a9, idProduct=3192
usb 1-5: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3
usb 1-5: Product: Canon Digital Camera
usb 1-5: Manufacturer: Canon Inc.
usb 1-5: SerialNumber: DA9C3D5C2D7F4E3EA806AA70BCDF3E28
So the kernel is at least aware of it. I tried letting thunar mount it, but it complains
thunar-volman: No property info.capabilities on device with
id /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/usb_device_4a9_3192_DA9C3D5C2D7F4E3EA806AA70BCDF3E28.
I also tried letting dolphin automount it (yuck), but didn't get any messages about it. I checked the fdisk output and there was no ~4GB device, so I'm not sure that I can mount it manually.

Unfortunately, when I try to install Debian off the DVD, the wireless gets disconnected right when it tells me to choose my method of connecting to the net. It then gives me three choices of connecting - wired, unknown, and wireless. I must be missing something, because when I choose wireless, it says it fails, and cannot find anything to connect to. I input the SSID and password manually and it says its not there. So I quit the install and go back to the desktop and reconnect no problems.

The HDMI cable is connected to my Radeon R9 270X graphics card.
My OS version is 8.1.
It works on Windows 8.1, so it is definitely an operating system problem.

Router works fine, debian refuses to work with it. I continued the install anyway but only have the first DVD so now I've got a useless base install that can't connect to the internet.
The fact that this installer has utterly failed where the others succeeded had drastically reduced my confidence in the debian team.

I have a debian-powered NAS (Buffalo LinkStation) and I want to configure the following behaviour: When ethernet (eth0) is plugged in, connect and get a static ip address (ie. 192.168.0.11) When a wireless usb-adapter (wlan0) is plugged in, connect to a wireless router (ie. "Ankkanet") get another static ip address (192.168.0.12)
My /etc/network/interfaces :
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static

what could be causing wireless to disconnect when ethernet cable is unplugged?

I have a computer with grub installed, and nothing else. I'd like to install Debian on it without having to burn a CD. (and I don't have any flash disks.) It has a nice ethernet card, and I have another computer right next to it with an ethernet card. I also have an ethernet cable. However, I don't have any router free which I can mess with for these purposes. As I've looked up, apparently modern Ethernet cards don't need crossover cables, normal cables will work for this type of connection.
I've tried several different "tutorials" on how to set up a netboot server, but
None of them are complete. All of them assume that you understand how DHCP works, and that you can do things like set up a dnsmasq server. I don't understand the DHCP protocol, with submasks and whatnot (I know that it is the protocol for assigning computer network addresses, and that's it), and I don't think I should have to in order to simply connect two computers. All of the tutorials give you incomplete configuration files, and ask you to fill in things which I don't understand, and for me it doesn't make sense to customize these settings, as I just want to connect them and I really don't care what ip address the TFTP server has or whatnot. All of these assume that you are going through a router. I am not. When I try googling for ways to directly connect two linux computers with an ethernet cable, I can't even find instructions, just more references to "you need crossover cables".
So basically, I have two computers directly connected by ethernet cables. Tell me what packages I need to install, what the contents of my configuration files should look like, and what, if any, commands I need to run in order that when I turn on my second computer, and select network boot, it will start up a minimal debian system.
EDIT: Hmmm, it looks like I actually have a linux kernel installed too, but no root filesystem (so no other programs besides busybox).

trying to create a "local network" by directly connecting an IBM Thinkpad with Debian Linux installed on it to an Alix computer running Voyager Linux. I'm following a "how to" I found to create a music server, hence the requirement. My issue is I can't get a static IP address to be configured on the Debian machine.I've trawled the net and have found the instructions about editing the /etc/network/interfaces and have tried to do this. First I tried to get DHCP working so I could connect the Debian machine to the net and this proved successful. I edited the interfaces file to look as follows:
# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp
Then I tried adding a static IP address to the machine. As this is a network purely between two machines I made up the IP addres and used 192.168.0.1 and used a NetMask calculator to give me a NetMask of 255.255.255.254 (I told the calculator there would be 2 machines on the network). I then edited the interfaces file as follows:
# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
[code]....
I re-booted the machine (ifdown eth0 followed by ifup eth0 keeps saying that eth0 hasn't been configured - a problem there that I don't understand), but during boot up time it failed to assign the Static IP address to eth0 and made me go into SU mode. To fix it I simply replaced the interface file with the static IP inputs with the file that had the DHCP entries (I'd made a copy of the DHCP file), and re-started the machine. Everthing came up fine. So the first question is how do I get a static IP address to be assigned to eth0 such that whenever I shut down and restart the machine the static IP address is always loaded?
The second question is around creating the network via the cross over cable. From what I've found via Google, all I should have to do is create a static IP address on the Debian machine and a static IP address on the Voyager machine. Once they're connected by the cross over cable they should see each other. Is that correct, or do I have to do anything else?

I'm having problems with my Internet. I just recently downloaded 10.04 (went from 8.04) and now I can't get online! I could yesterday! I don't have access to the router, but the internet works great on all my Windows computers. On my panel it show's my wireless connection bars with an exclamation mark and says disconnected. I don't know what to do! It's a Toshiba Satellite computer.
Also, I can't update anything, or install anything because I don't have direct access to the router. I know there is a lot of information about this problem already, but everything I've seen needs me to download new drivers. If you know how to do it from one computer to another I can do that. I'm just not very techy.

I boot into the CLI (by changing gdm.conf) and before it gets to the logon, it produces this error. So far, I haven't seen any effects but I'd like to get rid of it. Sometimes, I also get the error
Code:
mountall: plymouth command failed
I removed and reinstalled the Plymouth packages to no avail.. Anyone know how I can at least get rid of this error from appearing (like somehow changing a .conf file to not even try and "connect" to Plymouth)?
I did try the sudo apt-get update and all those other commands as listed on other sites. I went through the basic Google search so after the first 4 pages, I'm outta ideas.
