Debian Hardware :: Setting Up Serial Port - Command Not Found
Jun 23, 2014
I am a ham radio operator and I want to use my computer to run "RTTY", "PSK31", and other digital modes. Therefore I have to be able to configure the serial port.
I only have the onboard port (ttyS0).
I can get info about the port by using "$ dmesg | grep tty"
Code: Select alldebian@melsdeb:~$ dmesg | grep tty
[ 0.000000] console [tty0] enabled
[ 1.533804] serial8250: ttyS0 at I/O 0x3f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A
[ 1.534337] 00:06: ttyS0 at I/O 0x3f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A
But when I try to use "setserial" by itself or with any parameters I get this...
Code: Select alldebian@melsdeb:~$ setserial -g /dev/ttyS0
bash: setserial: command not found
Even "man setserial" gives the same result.
I am using Debian 6

I am new to linux terminal programming and all but i want to set up a simple serial communication from my desktop through USB port. The actual idea to to write some data in the terminal and build a terminal program that sends the data to the usb port with a fixed baud rate. are there ready made terminal programs available for this simple communication?or atleast any Graphical tools which could help me build and design such a terminal in ubuntu 9.04?

I want to send something through the serial port, for example
[code]...
the point here is send some numbers to a couple of 7 seg displays, so I will wire a RS232 chip on a protoboard, the logic after the RS232 is not an issue, but how can I assure the data is being sent right from my linux box to the RS232 chip, the one on the protoboard? Do I have to write a C program to read the strings and then send them to the serial port?For example if I wanted to send this to the displays:
[code]...
So I guess the simplest way is (Supposing I can deal with the stream so it is filtered and only display the number array) $ ifstat > /dev/ttyS0 But, how do I know if the RS232 will take them as the right characters?

I have a linux system connected to an external sensor device that spits out strings of serial data every few seconds. I need to send the data to a remote URL for logging and graphing purposes.
The data coming down the serial is essentially in the format:
And I need to call a URL from my linus box in the format
wget -s [url]
I can read the data to the shell using cat </dev/ttyS0 but I'm now stuck as to how I might then format that data and pass it to a shell script which would presumably run in an endless loop and contain the wget.

I am trying to get two way serial communications going between a Windows XP system and a Linux system (RHEL 5).I have /sbin/agetty -L 9600 ttyS0
in /etc/inittab. I am using a generic USB to serial adaptor on Windows (Unitek) and a null modem cable. I have putty configured for 9600 baud, 8 bits, no parity, one stop bit, no flow control.I get the login prompt from agetty in the putty window but input does not work; I see weird characters in the putty screen. I can echo output into the device from windows and see it, but
cat < /dev/ttyS0. just prints out weird characters from what I type.

I recently purchased a new PCI to Serial card to get 2 serial ports so I can connect my external serial modem and operate hylafax. The machine that I placed this card is a Debian 2.6.26-19lenny2 which is operating just fine. Further more the motherboard is ASUS P5QL-CM. I have managed to place the pci card on an available slot and powered on. I then tried to follow the instructions that the supplier of the card had regarding installation of drivers and this is what I get:
First they asked to untar the contents and make clean. the result is :
debiansrv:/temp/golden# make clean
cd driver;
make clean
make[1]: Entering directory `/temp/golden/driver'
rm -f *~
rm -f *.o

Basically I'm intending to write serial RX signal handler.Application receives defined packages of data over serial which contains header and payload. Handler should analyse incoming stream and upon detection of header (header is 6B in length) switches to receive payload of length defined in header, then after receiving full message packs it and sends to application for handling.Problem I'm facing is that at random moments in signal I receive errors that "Resource temporarily unavailable" while reading from ttyOx device and I see that sometimes I miss incoming data.Also is it possible that if while I'm handling signal one more signal arrives and it is started to be handled parallel? If it is, what are the ways to prevent it? So I would be sure that no more signals will fire on same peripheral until I will finish handling what I have on my hands now.
Serial open and init:
Code: Select allint open_port(int port_nr) {
int fd; /* File descriptor for the port */
switch (port_nr) {
case 1:
fd = open("/dev/ttyO1", O_RDWR | O_NOCTTY | O_NDELAY);
break;
[code]....

I have a problem getting Serial Port working on INTEL NUC DE3815TYBE. I have Debian Wheezy installed with kernel 3.16.0-0.bpo.4-amd64.
When I do :
Code: Select allsetserial -g /dev/ttyS*
I get:
Code: Select all/dev/ttyS0, UART: 16550A, Port: 0x03f8, IRQ: 4
/dev/ttyS1, UART: 16550A, Port: 0x0000, IRQ: 19
/dev/ttyS2, UART: 16550A, Port: 0x0000, IRQ: 19
/dev/ttyS3, UART: unknown, Port: 0x02e8, IRQ: 3
I can connect to ttyS0 - ttyS2 without any problem but ttyS3 is not working and I am getting this error:
I call command:
Code: Select allstty -F /dev/ttyS3 9600 cs8 cread clocal
I get:
Code: Select allstty: /dev/ttyS3: Input/output error
I am running the commands as ROOT. I also tried: setserial /dev/ttyS3 irq 3 uart 16550A skip_test but I am getting the same stty: /dev/ttyS3: Input/output error
Output of:
Code: Select alldmesg | grep tty
Code: Select all[ 0.000000] console [tty0] enabled
[ 0.952559] serial8250: ttyS0 at I/O 0x3f8 (irq = 4, base_baud = 115200) is a 16550A

[Code] .....
lsof /dev/ttyS3 doesn't return anything so it means there is nothing connected to ttyS3 I guess but I am not very skilled with linux so I might be mistaken
Why I can see 4 ttyS* in my Linux but physically I have only 2 physical Serial Ports on the board?

I recently got a pile of DEC equipment, and along with it came with a large DEC LP11 drum printer. I have yet to get the old system they were attached to up and running, I want to try to get the printer up and running under a modern linux install. The printer is a LP11 and attaches via serial. The most simple way to me seems to be via LPD, but Im not sure on how to proceed.

I am implementing a simple serial protocol where my ARM9 board, running Linux is communicating to a slave peripheral board. The Master sends a 12 byte data stream and the peripheral board returns status in a 23 byte response. The serial port is opened in raw mode. It works perfectly on 44 reads; however, on the 45 read the data returned from the read() is incorrect. I've framed what's being sent on an oscope and it is correct.The coincidence is that 23 x 44 = 1012. It's as though the receive buffer is 1K and when I go past the boundary I get bad data. The read following the bad one is good again.I've tried flushing the buffer before reading but get the same result.Here's the port initialization code:
Code:
int initport(int fd)
{

i have a site where I need to run a couple of php scripts every day..therefore I was thinking to setup a cronjob to do this. Unfortunately I get a whole bunch of errors trying to do so.
I can execute the php scripts via a command line without problem, one example would be
php /home/site/domains/stie.be/public_html/admin/cronjobs/cronjob_daily_ssh.php
however when i enter this command as such in a cronjob I get an error saying php command not found ( or something similar , doing this out of memory)
I tried to add the full path to the php command, but also this doenst work
the best workaround I found was to execute the php scripts with a lynx - dump command, but obviously this is not the right way.

I am writing some application in C, which will access a serial port device (RS232). My application is working good. But if any other application is already opened the port, I couldn't able to identify that. In windows VB program, while accessing comport through mscomm control, i am receiving an error as "Port Already Opened". But in Linux environment, through C program how can i get that? I am accessing comport 1 as follows
fd = open("/dev/ttyS0", O_RDWR | O_NOCTTY | O_SYNC);

I am hoping to be able to get an old serial-touchscreen to work with a usb/serial adapter. I had this touchscreen working some years ago on different hardware. I would like to hook it to the machine I am setting up as a multimedia host with mythtv among other things.
Following the instructions I left behind when I got this to work way back when does not work. See [URL] ....
This info is a work around to get the xserver to see the touchscreen. [URL] ....
I do know that the touchscreen works as I am able to get garbage on the screen as in the first part of my howto. But I have not had any success getting xorg to see it. I wish I had posted a copy of the xorg.conf at the time, but......
There is an issue with the current xserver in testing that I am hoping the next update (in unstable) will fix when it gets pushed to testing. That is that Code: Select all# X -configure fails with a segfault. So I am not able to generate the xorg.conf needed to get it to work. I was going to post a bugreport, that is when I found out there is an update in unstable, so I am waiting for it to get pushed at the moment.
Anyway I am hoping that I can link /dev/ttyUSB0 to /dev/tty0 and get it to work. I would like some kind of guess as to my chances of success before I go to all the work of getting the monitor hooked to the host.

I communication with different subsystems using serial port. In some subsystems after running for a while, I start getting invalid data inspite of system sending correct data. For dealing with this situation I used to
reset serial ports by closing and reopening serial port, it was doing the trick but somehow when I have implemented this in my new application, this also doesn't work.
void CPort::
The ClosePort function invokes close system call.
some other way to reset serial port in Linux? I am using RHEL 4, C++ and Qt 4.2.1 for my application development. Also I have used multithreading to implement each subsystem in a separate thread. Its strange that if A,B,C are three threads, A & B run fine together but when C is introduced B starts receiving invalid data after sometime and never recovers even after resetting the port as mentioned above.
