Debian Configuration :: Aptitude Update From Specific File?

I'm developing with puppet, and I need to do an aptitude update from a specific file, here is my configuration: The file sources.list in /etc/apt/ is deleted. I've created 3 files in /etc/apt/sources.list.d each one with their repos:
00-debian_sources.list
deb http://ftp.fr.debian.org/debian/ lenny main contrib non-free
deb-src http://ftp.fr.debian.org/debian/ lenny main contrib non-free

All the repos are updated/refreshed , and I only want to refresh/update the specific repos insie of the file 01-debian_security_updates.list. On the other hand if I put some repos in the sources.list and delete the 3 files and I create an external file for example in /tmp/temprepo and I do the command aptitude update -o dir::etc::sourcelist=/tmp/temprepo it works fine.give some workaround to update and then upgrade packages from the files specified in my config.

I am trying to upgrade an amd64 lenny system to squeeze.I've got a 2.6.32 kernel running, done aptitude update and aptitude install aptitude.When I try "aptitude safe-upgrade", it sits forever resolving dependencies.it seems to search with the resolver counting up more and more open/conflict/ whatever.I stopped it once it got over 100,000)Is it possible to get aptitude to do a safe-upgrade, perhaps using a command line option?

I installed squeeze 2 or 3 weeks ago. When I run aptitude update in the terminal, it looks for me to load a cd. What's that about? see below

I have a very strange problem; when trying to apt-get update or aptitude update I get time out errors. At first it was resolving ipv6 adresses:

I have had this problem repeatedly with aptitude recently. I run Debian Squeeze but in a somewhat unusual fashion - I create a custom live image using the builder on the Debian Live website and then run the live image in persistent mode off a flash drive. For all intents and purposes this has never behaved any differently from a standard Debian install and has given me a great deal of flexibility and power, for which I'm grateful.
However there's been one strange phenomenon that keeps occurring. After a certain point - not before - aptitude stops removing dependencies when I remove packages, though in the ncurses interface the option is shown as switched on (and my .aptitude/config file does not switch it off, nor does any other configuration file that I can find, though maybe I'm missing something). This occurs even in the case of dependencies which I know cannot be depended upon by any other package. e.g. the e17 package in unstable brings in libecore, libevas etc. which are depended on only by e17 as I have no other Enlightenment packages installed. But removing e17 removes only the e17 package and not the dependencies.
The other odd thing is that this does not occur at first. Aptitude works fine for a while on a clean system. At some point though it simply changes in behaviour.

I use Jessie, with the Aptitude curses interface for package management. It seems that every time I successfully uninstall/purge a package (along with its dependencies), then the next time I try to install/uninstall anything else it wants to reinstall that package (and its dependencies). It takes several (I haven't counted) "don't install" instructions from me before it will forget about it.

After running "aptitude upgrade" I have been getting a message lately such as "There are x updates available, it is recommended to update your system". But, running aptitude update/upgrade again afterwards, aptitude ignores these supposedly available updates to the system. How can I clear up this situation?. I am using the latest Debian Squeeze distro

I changed to testing repository in my Debian 6.0 and I used command "apt-get update". Now, everytime I want to do something with apt-get or aptitude, I receive this:

I had been doing some removal of packages, and things went well, or so I thought. Now whenever I try and install any package using aptitude, some old state is lingering around and wants me to install packages that I do not want, and remove some packages that I am not sure about removing (did I actually select those to be removed??) I removed libvirt etc, and now it wants to come back? Also, like I mentioned, why remove those other four packages?
The following NEW packages will be installed:
aqemu gtkrsync libvirt-doc libvirt0 python-libvirt qemu qemu-kvm qemu-system qemu-user qemu-utils virt-top virt-viewer virtinst
The following packages will be removed:

It's trying to fix/complete failed installs but keeps encountering the same errors (error message below). I'm running basically Testing, but there are a few Stable and SID packages due to issues with the blasted nVidia legacy drivers. I've swapped out the video board with an ATI board so that is sorted, but now I can't do any updates. Hoping there is some way to manually override apt's determination to try to fix all broken packages whenever I do anything (install, remove, update, etc). A Google search of this error message didn't turn up anything recent. Any thoughts are welcome.

Using Debian Jessie 32 bit and Wheezy 32 bit on 2 separate computers.
For the pass few days, received the following message on both computers when doing a aptitude update or apt-get update results in the following error message:

Well it didn't go smoothly for me. After downloading over 1,6Gb (!) of that new Debian version and restarting I was 'greeted' by a dreaded CLI instead of gnome. To make matters worse I got "command aptitude not found".
'apt-get' still worked.
Anyway, if you're gonna update check dependencies first. It seems I lost gnome due to gstreamer0.10-gnomevfs. So first uninstall that package if you got it.

I'm attempting to install some software on my friend's computer. It keeps saying the packages I want aren't there but I know they are. I've been fooling around with this for a while. I may have broken something in the process. Repository names, perhaps?Is there some way to reinstall Synaptic/Aptitude and "wipe the slate clean?"

Today I tried to attach my digital turntable to the line-in of the computer and hoped for some sound to come. Unfortunately it didn't work. I switched the line-in feature on and put the volume on max. Still no results. I checked the same on Windows and this DOES work, so it can't be the hardware. Do I have to install some extra app in order to use the line-in in put? To complete the information: I'm using Squeeze 64-bits with Gnome. The turntable (Akai ATT05U) HAS worked before (that was when I used Ubuntu 32-bits on an Intel Celeron ). Another thing: since I tried to edit the sound settings, I get an error message at boot: "Could not update ICEautority file /var/lib/gdm3/.ICEauthority". Does this have anything to do with the audio matter?

I have vps box with debian. I have two ip addresses, but first (default) is currently unavailable. In that case there is many problem. Fortunately wget has --bind-address option so I can download. My question is how can i configure apt-get, aptitude to use specific address?

I'm running gnome desktop on squeeze system. When I boot my system seems to be using my internet modem as its dhcp server. The rest of the machines on my lan are correctly using my router for that purpose. As a result, what happens then is that my debian machine frequently gets a duplicate ip address assigned to it. I would like to specify to my debian computer that I want it to use the specific fixed ip address of my router for dhcp purposes.

I have some beginner questions about DHCP, Avahi, and configuring a small home LAN.Suppose I have a dynamic IP address assigned by my ISP, which requires DHCP be enabled in my dsl modem/router/"firewall" [sic]. Suppose for simplicity I have just one PC behind the dsl modem.I think "enabling DHCP" in the modem/router means that a DHCP client runs on the router, which communicates with a DHCP server run by my ISP when I boot up a PC on my LAN. Is that guess correct? Can I get DHCP to assign a particular local IP, say 192.168.1.10 (which is not the one taken by the router--- for this discussion, let's say that is 192.168.1.0) to my PC each time I boot it up?
Now suppose I want to build a stand-alone firewall, so that my LAN will have the firewall and the first PC behind the modem, with the first PC virtually behind the firewall. By default, I think these will both have DHCP clients running which I need to configure properly. The firewall should also have a DHCP server which should control how local IP addresses are assigned, correct? I should try to arrange that the LAN has only DHCP server, only one NTP timeserver, only one DNS nameserver, correct?My first PC seems to have installed an autorun client called Avahi, which performs DNS multicast services and incorporates something called zeroconf which seems to have something to do with remote desktops, which I don't need and which is a potential security hazard. But it seems that Avahi is an intrinsic part of the KDE desktop and cannot be removed. Just want to be sure that Avahi can coexist comfortably with dhcp3-client, which is also installed on that PC. They perform different tasks, correct?If I can get the stand-alone firewall to work, I know I need to turn off the commercial firewall in the dslmodem/router/firewall device. Should I purchase a bridge and try to turn off the routing function also?

I need to install any version of Debian with the Debian Kernel version 2.6.22-3-686. I don't mind what version of Debian it is, I just need it to have this specific kernel! Debian Etch comes with 2.6.18-4-686 and Lenny comes with 2.6.26-2-686 so the kernel I need is obviously somewhere in between.
I have tried using the following commands to see if kernel 2.6.22-3-686 is available for download via the apt-get method in both Debian Etch and Lenny but it is not...

apt-cache search linux-source
So does anyone know where/how I can download specific kernels and install them for use? I have a computer sitting next to me that has multiple kernels as an option on boot, and they all boot into the same system, however I do not know the person who set up the computer so cannot ask them how they did it

I am running Debian Squeeze on an old pc (AMD K62-500) which serves as my multiwan router and torrent box. Internet uplink is provided via a dsl line and 2 wireless canopy modules.
Setup has been generally fine except when connecting/downloading as free user from sites like rapidshare, hotfile, filesonic, etc. The problem arises when I am connected to these sites using the wireless uplinks because of the shared public ip. I don't really download that much using direct download methods so I don't really see myself being a premium user from these sites.
If these sites are on a specific ip or ip range, an entry on the static routing table would have been fine but when I tried using ping, a different ip would appear to reply each time.
I wonder if there can be a solution like using iptables where in traffic to and from these sites will only use the NIC connected to the dsl line.

I have a trayless SATA hotswap bay that is really terrific for quickly attaching and removing SATA hard drives. I'm trying to write a udev rule to create a symbolic link to the device node for the drive that is attached through the hotswap bay (/dev/bay -> /dev/sdX). This eliminates any ambiguity when performing destructive tasks (fdisk, etc). I'm running squeeze amd64. I've read through several tutorials and have it working somewhat. Here's the output of udevadm info for a drive attached via the hotswap bay.

This produces the desired behavior and gives me an fdisk-able device node. The problem I am having is that the "host" component of the DEVPATH varies from bootup to bootup. I'm just using on onboard SATA, host2-7, specifically host7. There is also onboard PATA, host0-1. It seems to just be random which "host"s are assigned to which controller. For example, the next time I boot the system, the onboard SATA will be host0-5 and the onboard PATA will be host6-7. In this simple case, I could just write 2 rules, one for each possibility and it would still be correct because of the different PCI addresses of the two controllers. But on systems with more SCSI (uh... libata, actually) controllers, a "host" file can point to different physical ports between bootstraps. This would be bad. Does anyone know of a way to write a rule to tie a device node to a specific physical SATA port on the motherboard/hba?

How to properly set some entries in:
$HOME/.config/mimeapps.list
so that:
*.odb files are opened by default with libreoffice base
*.org files (just org files not plain text files) are opened by default with emacs
For some reason I can not figure out how to proceed.
As far as I know - i.e. for what I have been reading in the documentation - the default application for a given MIME-type is specified by writing into the group [Default Applications] in the mimeapps.list file
My configuration is the following:
