OpenSUSE :: Update Of Dbus From 1.2 To 1.4 Running KDE 4.4.4 Stable
Sep 29, 2010
Has anyone tried updating dbus in factory up to level 1.4 under openSuSE 11.3 x86_64 and continue to run KDE 4.4.4 Stable? Just wondering if it causes any issues or if it forces you to go to KDE 4.5.1 Factory. I've tried updating to 4.5.1 without, other thread, and the suggestion was to update dbus to 1.4 to correct speed issues.

i'm having a little issue with a small script i'm working on. It's a bash script that, amongst other things, checks the current playing song in Rhythmbox with "rhythmbox-client --print-playing". Now the thing is that if I run the script by hand it works perfectly, but when it's run by cron this part gives the following error:
Code:
(rhythmbox-client:9848): Rhythmbox-WARNING **: /bin/dbus-launch terminated abnormally with the following error: Autolaunch error: X11 initialization failed. It's running on my own cron (crontab -e) set to my user.

Should I have hal and/or dbus services running when my system doesn't have GUI? For example, in case of a mail/web server where I have console applications only on it.

I need to check and see that dbus, udisks and gvfs are running correctly, how can I check them?
I'm running only LXDE on a custom install of Lucid I did and I can't get my usb hard drive to automount properly and I was told by an LXDE developer that I need to check and make sure these three are running ok.

As far as I know, servers are stable and don't go down easily, but every single server will eventually go down some day, either from hardware/software failure or from hacking.
But as sysadmins, our job is to keep servers running healthy as long as possible.
So I'm conducting another short survey (I might start more survey threads, and thank everyone for kindly replying my previous post):
1. Have you encountered server failures? What's the most common cause for server failure?
2. What is your most important trick in avoiding your server go down?
3. What security rules do you follow to protect your servers?

I have installed debian 8.8.1 stable and run updates. When I run the cat release command it shows stretch/sid. I made no changes to the apt/sources list.
What do i have to do so it only updates with the stable release I am planning to use it as a server and only want stable fixes.

I'm running a standard 10.04 install with Gnome, but wanted to try out KDE 4.5 since it just came out. Now I installed KDE through the normal software channels and this installed 4.4.5. The question is how do I now upgrade to 4.5 as it appears 4.5 isn't in the stable ubuntu update channels?

I applied the security updates from October 20th, which included Firefox and Thunderbird, but I did not see one for Seamonkey. Since then, Seamonkey is warning me that there's an update available for it too -- as usually happens when Firefox is updated. Is there an update to Seamonkey that's available for -stable? Did I miss it somehow?

Well it didn't go smoothly for me. After downloading over 1,6Gb (!) of that new Debian version and restarting I was 'greeted' by a dreaded CLI instead of gnome. To make matters worse I got "command aptitude not found".
'apt-get' still worked.
Anyway, if you're gonna update check dependencies first. It seems I lost gnome due to gstreamer0.10-gnomevfs. So first uninstall that package if you got it.

I'm running Fedora 11, and just did an update of the system. It looks like there was an update to the package that takes care of knetwork manager. In the past, I have played around with it, but it hasn't met my needs, so I went back to nm-applet, which works fine.
I'm curious about the update, and would like to see if it works. However, knetwork manager won't start as there is another network manager already running (there is a message about this everytime I log in). I can easily kill nm-applet, but logging out and back in causes it to reload, and I still get the message from knetwork manager. So here are my questions:
1) With the update, is knetwork manager stable and robust enough for regular use (the docs for F11 said it wasn't upon F11 release, so included gnome's network manager as the default network manager)?
2) How do I get knetwork manager to work (I presume this means I turn off Gnome's network management and switch to knetwork management)?

I played the apprentice sorcerer trying to install mysql workbench by my own and I messed up the system 11.1 by removing accidentally some libraries and decided to jump on 11.4 by using the update feature from the DVD. It worked all good (it seems at least: I didn't lost any datas and all my servers are running ok) but there is no more X11 server (kde) running for the run level 5.
I checked the inittab file and it is set to 5. I can log on root account and now I'm searching how to install kde on this new 11.4 system. I didn't yet tried the failsafe option at boot. Is there a way to set up kde from the internet, my wifi connection is ok ? I saw that yast was not installed nore zypper nore yum. Do I first try another update to fix it (if possible) from DVD?

I update Jessie "stable" 8.2 to 8.4 and now I get 5 minute interval kernel messages:

Apr 18 06:45:03 OraHost kernel: [132295.755942] sdc: unknown partition table

I believe this has something to do with an mdadm update which was included in the release. When I configured the array, I didn't partition the disk devices, so maybe that has something to do with it. I am thinking of rebuilding the array and partitioning prior to build, but a quick fix would be referable.
And also something appears to have happened to the raid device since the update.
Prior to update, the array was /dev/md0 - now it is /dev/md/0 which is a symbolic link back to /dev/md0.
mdadm --detail --scan now reports /dev/md/0 where previously it reported /dev/md0
I created a new RAID1 array on a fresh system and immediately after the create, these messages appear at 5 minute intervals.

In OpenSuSE 11.2 YaST -> Online Update Configuration I can configure how often the system should check for updates (i.e. daily, weekly). Does this operate independently from the Online Update Applet(kupdateapplet)? The reason I ask is that the Applet doesn't always seem to work correctly. However, if the system will check for online updates automatically regardless of the Applet, perhaps this isn't an issue. If I can avoid messing with the Applet, that would be great.

I'm not sure what when wrong since I have a few DVDs and they all play well in my normal DVD player, I later attempt to mount it in my Ubuntu 8.10 I'm presented with the following message:
DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.
May I know what does this really mean?Is there something in my computer that require a fix?

I'm using handbrake to encode some dvd's and am trying to use the autoshutdown feature. It does not work. However, handbrake does not seem at fault here. When I check in qdbusviewer, there is indeed no shutdown method in the org.freedesktop.PowerManagement interface. This does not seem normal, although I have the same problem on 2 suse 11.3 boxes.Through this post, I started fiddling with policykit settings, but it doesn't change anything.Does anyone know a solution to this problem? Do you have these canShutdown/shutdown methods?

What the heck do I do now? 2 times I've re-installed suse 11.2 and this is what I get every time it tries the first update. I just had a perfectly fine working version of 11.2 that was installed using the network install just 3 days ago but I messed up and couldn't access mySql. Today I blew it away thinking I'd just start over and now it doesn't work. I installed it exactly the same as 2 days ago, whats changed? How do I fix this? I can't access the software repository settings in yast, nothing happens when I try to start it.
