Today I had a problem with kde. meanwhile i try to solve it (I was unable ) I saw that I have an old version of KDE. I would pass to the last version (I think 4.5.3. Is it this?) But, for my low capacity I would made it by a packed environment. My question is: Where do i can try a packet that let me upgrade it? (4.5.3 or 4.5.2). Do I have to upgrade my source.list? Or can I upgrade with another command?
View 2 RepliesI am using debian squeeze and did an aptitude upgrade yesterday. Today I've found that VLC won't play any video; the files open and the audio plays, but the video is black. The aptitude log is below.
I note that VLC received a security upgrade a few days ago, but my suspicion is that the source of this problem is more likely to be the upgrade of libavcodec52 from version 4:0.5.2.6 -> 5:0.6.1+svn20101128-0.2. I believe this upgrade came from the debian-multimedia stable repo I have enabled.
Does this sound right, and what could I do to fix my VLC playback? This is new territory for me, and I'm slightly surprised that such an upgrade would come from the stable branch of debian-multimedia (although I know this is not an official source).

After being away for a long time I decided to go back to Debian with XFCE. It came with XFCE 4.10 and I would like to install 4.12.
I've spent several hours trying things from forums and blogs but am so far unsuccessful.
I looked at amarok 2.3 and i want to upgrade it from 1.4, but i looked at the amarok site and it said the amarok in Debian Lenny will always be 1.4? Is this true and if not, is there a way i can update it manually?

I'm on the Debian testing branch. Initially I used xfce, but am now using i3.
Why there are no events after the upgrade? Maybe I should downgrade some of the above packages?
X won't start (awesome WM) after upgrading to jessie. It seems to startup up, then just stops. I'm running startx from the command line after logging in. The xorg log (bottom) looks good and I see an exit code of zero.
I do see this in sysout:

I'm running Wheezy and just did an apt-get upgrade which installed linux-3.2.0-4-amd64, a bunch of php5 stuff and some qemu stuff. Now when I log into the desktop it starts loading and before it finishes I wind up with a screen full of text. The first line is usually "BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at <some address that varies>" but sometimes the first line is off the screen. None of KDE, Gnome or xfce work. Recovery mode to a shell prompt works fine. I did a net install of Wheezy on another disk and that runs just fine. I'd like to get my original disk working.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI just ran one of my weekly upgrades last night (I'm using sid with the 2.6.32-5-686-bigmem kernel). Now compositing no longer works with kde (4.4.5). When I click "resume compositing," I get a message saying "Compositing has been suspended by another application." I'm using the radeon driver. My middle mouse button also stopped working after the upgrade, i.e., I can't use it to copy and paste; can't open new tabs in any browser using the middle button. (The mouse works perfectly in my other two computers, both of which still have kde 3.5.10 installed.) None of these problems existed before last night's full-upgrade, so the upgrade definitely broke a few things, and I don't know how to fix them.
glxinfo | grep render says direct rendering is working. But when I run glxgears, I only get text output, without the animated gears. The results from 'glxinfo | grep -i opengl' say "OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on AMD RS880.", and Im guessing that Gallium is causing my compositing problem. Would this also explain why the middle click on my mouse no longer works? Does anyone know how I can get compositing working again, and my mouse?
After upgrading to squeeze I have now X Server 1.7.7 installed and it won't start.
When I try to run startx script, monitor gets blank for few seconds and then I get back to command prompt and no errors is displayed.
When I try the same as root, system locks up with blank screen and no functioning keyboard.
Initially I had kernel 2.6.28 which worked fine with earlier Lenny's X Server and Matrox P650 AGP video card. After upgrade I found, that Matrox P650 is not longer supported in new xorg and I swapped it to Matrox G550 AGP card.
Tried mga driver's many options, upgraded to kernel 2.6.37.2, tried with Matrox G200 PCI and Savage 4 Pro AGP card but without a success.
With kernel AGP support turned on I got both with Matrox G550 and Savage card an MTRR error: "error setting MTRR, Invalid argument (22)". Without AGP support in kernel, Matrox G550 gets initialised as PCI card and no errors and X still not working. Same with Matrox G200 PCI card.
With vesa driver the behavior is also the same and output at the end of Xorg.log file is almost the same.
So I understand, that this is some X server problem?
Nothing special in xorg.conf file and tried without it also.

After yesterday's apt-get dist-upgrade, I lost my higher screen resolutions. Only had 800x600 and 640x480. After trying to re-install the Nvidia drivers several different ways without success, I ended up purging xorg and xserver and then starting from scratch, re-installing the drivers. In doing so, I either found the problem, or created another, ha.I think part of the problem was that I mixed Nvidia proprietary and debian installations and the update broke the drivers.I am now unable to install xorg or xserver because I can not remove/purge libgl1-nvidia-alternatives.
View 2 Replies View Relatedi have an installation of wheezy 7.8 i think. i was facing difficulties in read of matroska video. therefore have decided to installer gstreamer1.0 wich should be resolve my problem. i have added the backports repository in apt sources list. after an apt-get update i launch apt-get install gstreamer1.0 . i have noticed it have starting downloading more file than it needs i concluded that it was a upgrade or something like because the kernel was also updated. after the the packet downloading it has started the installation with some errors related to LOCALE LCC. it has stopped and restarted some services wich is normal. i have closed all others apps and restarted. Here start the hell. after the restart i have passed the kde login screen and after BLACK SCREEN with mouse working.

What i have tried? i have rename the /home/jefcolbi/.cache and back it again, rename /home/jefcolbi/.kde and back it again. next i have tried to check the Xorg config file. i created a new one with X -configure, modified it to feet my system configuration this does not resolve the problem but add another the keyboard is not working in graphical mode.

I upgraded the distro (Strecht - Testing) and the result was almost the same mentioned by mittgreen, when I boot the system it fails to load the X, ending in the "oh no something has gone wrong" screen.Now, the only possible way to use the GUI is to start it manually by startx command. Reading the Xorg.log I saw a "No screens found" error.

Now some strange freezes occur. After 10sec - 3min after login the GUi freezes and the screen gets blurry and some "lines" appear.
I never suffered from this bug under Wheezy. What could be wrong? Some conflict with the X-server?
I did a distribution upgrade using "apt-get dist-upgrade". After rebooting, I receive a message saying "Failed to start the X Server". Debian's Enigmail package is conflicting with that version of Icedove, though, and won't install therefore. I can't install enigmail as an Icedove add-on either, because the add-on is telling me that the Icedove build type "Linux_x86_64-gcc3" ain't compatible with it.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have upgraded from Lenny to Squeeze. Aside from a few installation issues, the upgrade went relatively smooth. I had a problem with the graphics proprietary driver not being installed after the upgrade but I was able to solve the problem. I also successfully upgraded the filesystem from ext3 to ext4. One thing that did break on the upgrade is that now I do not have the capability to add and switch workspaces. I went into compizfusion and added for horizontal workspaces, but clicking on them does not switch to them. If I right-click on the preferences, it does not let me allow to add any more workspaces. I can change the number workspaces displayed through Genetal tab in compiz but the graphics appeared that they exist, but when I click or try to even switch between them it does not work. I was able to send a window to workspace two but then I lose all access to it. So it seems it might even exist but the applet in bottom right corner does not let me switch between them.Also draggin a window of the edge to another workspace does not work.

When I load up, but before login, my second monitor displays what I can only describe as a glitched-up memory of something it was displaying before, unless it has been turned off and turned back on again (as opposed to restarted), in which case it displays a very bizarre tiled image. I can't help but feel this is something obvious I've missed.
View 1 Replies View RelatedLast night I tried updating from Testing to Sid. Big mistake. Not sure what I did wrong... I changed my repos to sid, and did the usual update / dist-upgrade / autoclean / autoremove. I did not see any significant error messages during the update process. Now, I had fluxbox, gnome and openbox installed. The weird thing is after rebooting I could no longer boot into gnome or openbox as they had merged into something GNOME/Openbox, which was essentially the openbox panel, the nautilus menu on right click, and nothing else. So I purged them both but now when I try to reinstall gnome I get unresolvable dependencies (at least in the sense that both apt-get and aptitude fail to resolve them). fluxbox is still working fine, although it's missing a few things as I was using many gnome apps inside fluxbox.

Under wheezy, I could set gnome-terminal profile to partial transparency, i.e., to display the desktop wallpaper behind the text. (E.g., a picture of my girlfriend.) But after upgrade to Jessie, this option completely disappeared, and now I can only pick a solid color. Do I need to flip a setting or something to get this back? Am running default Gnome desktop (not fallback mode) though I think I only have 2D acceleration.

Now when i place the xfce4-power-manager-plugin on the panel, the plugin is using more RAM than it needs. Currently its using 960 MiB. Yesterday it used about 3 GiB of RAM. It doesn't happen if the plugin is removed from panel.

I upgraded from wheezy to jessie, but now I just boot to a console. I've gone through and made sure all packages are up to their latest versions, and I've made sure gnome, xorg, and xserver-xorg are reinstalled (during the upgrade they got uninstalled..).

Yesterday I done an upgrade with apt and since that time whenever I boot up I am presented with only a blank screen and an unresponsive cursor. I cannot switch console using Ctl+Alt+F*. The only thing I can do is Alt+SysRq+(R,E,I,S) which kills gdm3 and gets me back to the console.
* I can get into Xorg fine via the startx command
* As a temporary fix, if I enable automatic login (via /etc/gdm3/daemon.conf) then gdm3 works.
But I can't get the normal authenticated login screen to work.

One other thing worth noting, before upgrading yesterday, I changed mirrors and accidentally pasted in "stable" into /etc/apt/sources.list. So basically I did an initial upgrade, realised my mistake, switched back to testing (which I was on before) and done another upgrade, which is when I noticed this problem.

After upgrading the kernel and restarted, I've been having an issue with the screen. After logged in through GDM, the screen starts distorting, creating small colorful object and blurry

However, this problem does not exist on tty other than used by desktop ( tty1...tty6 is not affected ) And not in GDM too!!! My GDM shows up nicely, I let it there for hours and no distortion, no strange colors whatsoever.
KMS is enabled ( by default ) as I checked :

I have got Debian SID (2.6.38-2-amd64) (lenovo x61s) after the last aptitude dist-upgrade the keyboard does not work (udev 168-1) after boot. The USB keyboard and the usb mouse work fine. Have you got any idea on how to fix it? I have google it but I have not found any similar issue.

I'm using sid and Gnome3 since two months. This morning I was operating an upgrade on my system with "aptitude update && aptitude safe-upgrade", and after rebooting gnome crash and tell me to restart my session.code...
Is there any others log files where gnome3 writes errors ?
I have used a quite obscure device called Cideko AK0b [URL] .... for quite some time now and it has worked perfectly for almost 2 years now, both in Wheezy and in Jessie. However since I made an dist-upgrade a while back the mouse has totally stopped working. The system works through wifi - strangely enough - but everything else works. Keyboard and gamepad buttons. The manufacture says the things doesn't work on linux and so far I have proved them wrong.
But now the mouse is just out right dead no matter what I do. Have looked into mouse autosuspend but no avail so far. My suspicion is systemd but that is as good as any guess.
Running 3.14-2-amd64.

I recently upgrade my system from Jessie to Stretch, with no problem. A little later I upgrades Enlightenment from e17 to e20, and at some point shortly after that the second screen stopped working.
The nvidia X Server Settings correctly identifies both screens. But Enlightenment and xrandr does not see the second one at all. The second screen are on and the pointer moves correctly onto it, but no activity with left or right click. I have tried with the original xorg.conf, and generated a new one with nvidia-xconfig, but no difference. No obvious errors in any log-files either.
