Debian Multimedia :: Xfce4 Power Manager Using Too Much RAM After Jessie Upgrade

May 11, 2015

I recently upgrade from wheezy to jessie. I had a problem with the icons and solved it. Now when i place the xfce4-power-manager-plugin on the panel, the plugin is using more RAM than it needs. Currently its using 960 MiB. Yesterday it used about 3 GiB of RAM. It doesn't happen if the plugin is removed from panel.

Command in task manager:
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/xfce4/panel/wrapper /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/xfce4/panel/plugins/libxfce4powermanager.so 20 20972767 power-manager-plugin Power Manager Plugin Display the battery levels of your device and control the brightness of your display.

Debian Multimedia :: Xfce4-power-manager Doesn't React To Power Button / Fix It?

Jun 4, 2010

I use Squeeze with Xfce. My problem is that recently (after the xfce updates) the xfce power manager doesnt react to the power button - it is set to suspend. I dont have gnome-power manager or anything like it running.
If i reboot the computer, the power button will work but if i suspend and resume, it doesnt work again.
The computer is built on an Asus M3N78-VM mobo (2GB RAM/Athlon3200+ single core).

acpi_listen detects the button press.

Any thoughts?

Slackware :: Xfce4-power-manager-1.0.1 And No Battery Options

Oct 17, 2010

I noticed that there is a 1.0.1 version of xfce4-power-manager, so I tried it out last night. Note: It requires libxfce4ui >= 4.7. I compiled it using the same SlackBuild script as the one in Slackware 13.1. It compiled and installed just fine. However, when I logged out of XFCE and logged back in, I could only set a few options, and battery options were completely non-existant.

I double-checked, and my user account in in the power group. Has anyone else had a similar problem? In the meantime, I've downgraded back to the 0.8.5 version that Slackware ships with.

Slackware :: Missing Xfce4-power-manager Icons In Xfce 4.8

Jun 25, 2011

I'm using Slackware64 13.37 with Robby's Xfce 4.8 build on a laptop with two batteries. I've noticed that when the charge for one battery is depleted, the empty battery icon for the xfce4-power-manager panel applet is displayed as an "image missing" icon (see the attachments for screenshots of how this progresses).

Is this just down to a missing image, or is it more subtle than that? Has anyone else had the same problem, and if so how did you fix it? So far I've tried clearing the GTK+ icon cache and reinstalling the hicolor icon theme package as suggested in other threads in this forum, but nothing changed.

Debian Multimedia :: Jessie KDE Does Not Show File Manager With Dvd-rom

May 7, 2015

When I insert a dvd-rom I dont get the option for the file manager. I do get k3b, vlc, dragon and two other options. Im guessing this is a bug since this didnt happen with Wheezy. When I insert a dvd data disc I do get the file manager option. Strange this is, after inserting the data disc, removing it and then reinserting the dvd-rom I see the option for file manager. How can I get the file manager option to show everytime I insert a dvd-rom? I tried to,create a new option in system setting but man is that stuff confusing.

i,want to be able to browse a dvd-rom movie/video using dolphin when i insert one. I want open with file manager to be one of the choices. I think file manager is the choice.

Debian Multimedia :: X Won't Start After Upgrade To Jessie

X won't start (awesome WM) after upgrading to jessie. It seems to startup up, then just stops. I'm running startx from the command line after logging in. The xorg log (bottom) looks good and I see an exit code of zero.

I do see this in sysout:

Googled around but I can't find anything specific on this one.

Debian Multimedia :: Random Freezes After Jessie Upgrade

I just upgraded my Debian Wheezy XFCE 32-Bite to Jessie.

Now some strange freezes occur. After 10sec - 3min after login the GUi freezes and the screen gets blurry and some "lines" appear.

I never suffered from this bug under Wheezy. What could be wrong? Some conflict with the X-server?

Debian Multimedia :: Jessie Upgrade - Gnome Terminal Transparency

May 1, 2015

Under wheezy, I could set gnome-terminal profile to partial transparency, i.e., to display the desktop wallpaper behind the text. (E.g., a picture of my girlfriend.) But after upgrade to Jessie, this option completely disappeared, and now I can only pick a solid color. Do I need to flip a setting or something to get this back? Am running default Gnome desktop (not fallback mode) though I think I only have 2D acceleration.

Debian Multimedia :: Graphics Stop Working After Upgrade To Jessie

Oct 17, 2015

I upgraded from wheezy to jessie, but now I just boot to a console. I've gone through and made sure all packages are up to their latest versions, and I've made sure gnome, xorg, and xserver-xorg are reinstalled (during the upgrade they got uninstalled..).

Here's what happens when I run startx manually:

Code: Select allcharlie@asimov:~$ startx
X.Org X Server 1.16.4
Release Date: 2014-12-20
X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0
Build Operating System: Linux 3.16.0-4-amd64 x86_64 Debian

[Code] ...

Note also that this whole time, gdm3 has been running:

Code: Select allcharlie@asimov:~$ ps ax | grep gdm3
 1058 ?        Sl     0:00 /usr/sbin/gdm3
 3993 tty2     S+     0:00 grep gdm3
charlie@asimov:~$ sudo service gdm3 status

[Code] .....

I'm not sure why it prints that it's starting gdm3, but it does that every time I run `sudo service gdm3 status'.

Here's a copy of my /var/log/Xorg.0.log.

Debian Multimedia :: Upgrade System From Jessie To Stretch - Second Screen Detection

Dec 31, 2015

I recently upgrade my system from Jessie to Stretch, with no problem. A little later I upgrades Enlightenment from e17 to e20, and at some point shortly after that the second screen stopped working.

The nvidia X Server Settings correctly identifies both screens. But Enlightenment and xrandr does not see the second one at all. The second screen are on and the pointer moves correctly onto it, but no activity with left or right click. I have tried with the original xorg.conf, and generated a new one with nvidia-xconfig, but no difference. No obvious errors in any log-files either.

Debian Configuration :: Jessie 8.2 - GUI Update-manager XFCE Notifier

Jan 1, 2016

Since update-manager was removed from Debian Jessie, I am looking for something similar or a way to install update-manager for 8.2. I would like a GUI.

I have tried gnome-packagekit, but some of the commands don't appear to work or it seems incomplete and I don't know of a way to test to make sure that it is working.

Other sites recommended to use smartpm. However, I cannot seem to find the plugin xfce4-smartpm-plugin in [Xfce Goodies] that would work as a notifier.

Unattended-upgrades does not meet my specifications, because to my knowledge there is no GUI configuration for this.

Though Debian Jessie is a great distro, I am finding it difficult to recommend to some newer users because it does lack a GUI updater/notifier at this time.

Debian Multimedia :: XFCE4 Shutdown Just Goes To LightDM Greeter

The most interesting and frustrating problem is when I choose Shutdown or Restart from the XFCE4 shutdown menu, the XFCE4 session closes but then the lightDM greeter pops back up. The system doesn't even try to shut down.

Its as if restart and shutdown both act the same as the Logout button.

Im running XFCE4 4.12 (but same behaviour on 4.10). I have the latest LightDM and the latest Systemd.

Searching synaptic for "screensaver" shows xdg-utils installed which has xdg-sreensaver but I'm not sure if that is really the program that is dimming the screen. Anyway, I couldn't find a way to change the amount of time that it takes to do so.

Debian Multimedia :: Squeeze (Xfce4 Archiver) Can't Open Files?

Dec 23, 2010

This is about the Squeeze (0.2.3-8) archiver in Debian Squeeze. I may be missing a dependency, but is Squeeze incapable of opening files inside archives? I created a generic archive with "tar -cvf arxiv.tar file01.txt" and Squeeze segfaults when I try to double click to open the file (file01.txt) stored in the archive (arxiv.tar).

Also, after experimenting with Squeeze on the command line, it seems the "-n" option works, but results in an orphaned gui window; the "-x" option will only extract to a directory which already exists (which is o.k., but should be documented); and the "-d" option doesn't follow the general syntax in the man page "squeeze [OPTION...] [archive name]", which isn't bad, but sure does make it unnecessarily cumbersome to use, and also, the gui runs (blinks for a split section) for no clear reason. Now it would be silly to use command line squeeze over tar, but the man page for Squeeze begins with: "Squeeze - modern and advanced archive manager for Xfce".

I would like a gui archiver/extracter to use with Xfce4 without all the QA problems. Unless I'm doing something really wrong, this software doesn't seem to be ready for release at all, and the upstream version has not changed in a long time.

Debian :: Can't Disable Power Manager In Some Cases

Oct 25, 2010

I am having a weird problem where if I don't touch the mouse or keyboard after logging on, the power manager settings are being ignored. I disabled turning off the display and screen saver from the Gnome utilities, but after about 20 minutes my screen blanks and my wireless network connection gets disconnected. This is on an HTPC, so I'm usually not near the mouse or keyboard, and unfortunately button presses from the remote control don't count. Media players like MPlayer will prevent the screen from blanking, but if I'm listening to music (where the music is served over the network from another computer), this means that the screen will go blank and the music playback will freeze as the network connection is lost. If I touch the keyboard just after booting it doesn't blank the screen or disconnect my wireless, but when I forget it's very disruptive.

I am running Debian Testing (Squeeze) with a Gnome desktop environment. I'm using gdm3 to log in, but I have it set up to automatically log me on. (I use gdm on my desktop, also with Squeeze, with it configured to show login screen instead of automatically logging me on and it still displays that behavior) I have attempted the following to resolve this issue to no avail:

Disable DPMS for my screen and monitor in /etc/X11/Xorg.conf Set all the timeouts for blanking, power down, etc. to 0 in /etc/X11/Xorg.conf Flat out disabling the DPMS extension. (so it's still blanking, even if it's not actually turning on power saving mode) Putting "xset s off" in ~/.xinitrc Disabling powersave with setterm in ~/.xinitrc
Removing gnome-screensaver and gnome-power-manager from the startup items.

Edit: Actually, the wireless issue seems to not be related. It disconnected again, and after some searching with the error message I saw in dmesg, it looks like others have been having the same issue. It seems to have been coincidental that it was acting up when I was testing the screen blanking issue, and hasn't given me as much trouble lately, so it seemed like it was correlated.
