I'm using sid and Gnome3 since two months. This morning I was operating an upgrade on my system with "aptitude update && aptitude safe-upgrade", and after rebooting gnome crash and tell me to restart my session.code...
Is there any others log files where gnome3 writes errors ?
I have Debian Testing. My theme is Equinox Light and it was working well except for "Passwords and Encrypton keys" app (Version3.02). That doesn't bothered me. But after todays upgrade from gnome-terminal (2.3.2-1) to gnome-terminal3 Equinox theme doesn't work. My themes are installed in /usr/share/themes folder. It doesn't matter if i copy them to my home theme folder. It seems that gnome3 apps doesn't support
Reverting to previous version fixes the problem but i want to have version 3 with nice theme. Ho w can i achieve it?
how to install gnome3 in debian? have anyone done this successfully? 3Q aptitude install -t experimental -r gnome3-session this method does not work for me.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI first recognized this bug with dual screen. The main screen the mouse pointer was working, but on the other screen after a short time, the pointer changes to a comb (multiple lines of pixel).
Now I have the same with one screen mode. I'm using catalyst propriatary driver for my Radeon R9 290X (cause I need dual head mode and 3D support, had no chance to bring it up working else).
I have just installed Debian Wheezy. However, on logging in for the first time it reverted back to what looks like gnome2. I think this is a graphics card issue...

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have small problem with GNOME in Wheezy (trying it out just for fun). Whenever I start GNOME Shell and open any window, I get only blue color where windows should be. Entire window is just blue. Shell starts fine. GNOME Classic starts and works well too, even better than MATE in Jessie. My graphics card is old NVidia GeForce MX 440 8x AGP. I suspect it is causing problems.
Kernel is Wheezy's 3.2.

I'm trying to dual boot 9.10 with Vista on an HP Pavilion Slimline (AMD64). I've tried both booting from a disk and using Wubi, and neither has worked. Booting from the disk takes me through the screen where I can choose to try Ubuntu without installing, but after selecting that, the desktop didn't load, the screen just went to black.
I decided to try Wubi, and it went well enough. Everything in windows worked, and upon rebooting, it was able to finish checking the installation. After one more reboot, I selected Ubuntu from the Windows boot manager, and then the grub command prompt appears. I can't seem do anything after that except reboot.
I have no idea what's going on with this computer.
I've just updated my desktop to F13 using preupgrade but now grub won't boot it. The upgrade seemed to go OK, and none of the disk partitions should have changed as far as I'm aware, but now I get an error

View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm having this problem on two desktop machines running Squeeze with GNOME. NetworkManager simply will not resolve DNS. In network settings, it picks up my router under "DNS Servers". However, applications such as Iceweasel will not load domain names, though the IP addresses do work. From command line, DNS is working fine.
I realise I can fix this by adding my ISP's DNS servers to resolv.conf, but I'm looking for a proper solution to this problem, as I have experienced it before and probably will again.
Sound works great for non kde programs such as firefox and vlc. Amarok and dragon player however refuse to play with sound. Sound doesn't work either when testing it in the 'Multimedia' section. I have no pulseaudio installed. Any ideas where I can look for possible solutions? code...
View 3 Replies View RelatedUpgraded from FC14 X64 to FC15 X64 yesterday. I've used gnome2 forever, its worked very well for me.My workstation has 4 displays driven by two nvidia cards. One with dual dvi outputs, the other with one dvi one vga. I use the proprietary nvidia driver, NOT nouveau. Each card ties its displays together with twinview, and then xinerama spans across the who cards. This worked splendidly on gnome2, WITHOUT compiz. I used to use compiz when i had two displays so that I could have nice wobbly windows and transparencies, all very nice, but the extra area of the 4 displays was much more important to me. See, xinerama breaks compiz.
When i upgraded from FC14 to 15, my displays went amok, i ended up having to upgrade my nvidia driver, an then couldnt get things working in gnome 3. Finally i fell back to kde, kde4, and lxde both work just as gnome 2 did with my 4 displays. Gnome 3 with Gnome-shell fails spectacularly. Even if I fall back to two displays on one card, its wonky, things dont display properly, and the overview sometimes breaks such that it wont even come up anymore. Gnome3 without gnome-shell also does not work, in fact, i cant even get into gnome, it gives me some error and logs me out when all 4 monitors are enabled, and with only 2, it works, but.. well.. I want my 4 displays!I'm almost certain that compiz is to blame. Gnome's "Fail safe" uses compiz, and i'm betting the compiz isnt working on my 4 displays, causing said error and logout. I have no idea what the heck gnome-shell is doing. It actually displays on two monitors, while the other two are black. The mouse is able to display on all 4, i'm unable to interact with the displays which show gnome, but the displays which are black, seem to respond to my clicks, but they respond on the two montiros which display gnome. Very strange.

I am trying to solve multiple issues with my 64x natty install using gnome3 ppa( official ppa from gnome3). I have this setup on two machines, one is a fresh install the other is a upgrade. They both have most of these issues. Here they are: 1) Nautilus will not launch from the favorites bar. It does launch from a shortcut on the desktop. It will not run from the terminal unless I am root. 2) Number lock is disabled at startup (enabled in my bios). I used to be able to enable after nattty had started, I no longer can, though num lock light is lit - number keypad does not work!
3) I have set gnome3 set to let nautilus draw the background and desktop, I get a white screen at boot until Nautilus is launched then I get a background and some desktop icons(no computer or network icons). If I plug in a usb drive the icon appears on my desktop, when I select it I loose the background and have to select it again.
4) Wireless randomly will drop the connection, have to reconnect, sometimes it will, sometimes I have to reboot. I have Fedora installed on a 2nd hard drive on the machine with a clean install and the only similarity is it displays the default desktop until I launch Nautilus, then my background and desktop are displayed with all of the icons. From there on out Fedora has none of these issues. I have used Ubuntu Gnome and XFCE as my only os since 6.0 and have never had this many problems. Both machines would not run the gdm because of Nvidia issues after the upgrade and clean install. I DO NOT want to give up on Ubuntu as I tell all my friends and family to use it.

Most of the time when I boot my PC I get an error about fsck.ext4: Unable to resolve... I don't know why it's happening.
The problem is happening with my external drive that has 3 partitions:
/dev/sdc1
/dev/sdc3
/dev/sdc2
About 90% of the time I boot I do get the error. Sometimes after getting the error I can login and the external drive (/dev/sdc) is already mounted:

The UUID's in the error file match the output of the command blkid. And the UID's of blkid match the fstab UUID's. I don't know what to do at this point.
I have a /boot partition, and the online update process has downloaded the upgrade to /boot/upgrade. The problem is that grub is actually booting from a directory /boot which is in the root partition, but is invisible once the machine has booted, because the /boot partition is mounted over it. The result of all this is that the upgrade option does not appear in the boot menu, because that option has been inserted in the menu.lst (or grub.conf) in the /boot partition. is it ok for me to run:grub-install /dev/sda4(that's the device that contains the /boot partition where the upgrade menu option and data). Also, do I need the --root-directory option, given that the boot directory is the root directory of that partition.

Since then id didn't boot anymore. Now I have blank screen with a blinking cursor ... immediately after the BIOS screen, so it looks that no OS is loaded.

Two general questions about Fedora 15 before I decide to install. My system typically starts in about 32 seconds, with a distro using normal boot scripts. With Ubuntu and upstart it reaches the gdm login screen quicker in around 18 - 24 seconds. With systemd does anyone get a noticeable difference?
Also, is it possible to use an alternative desktop to gnome3 in Fedora 15. I've tried Gnome3 with Arch and its very slick although not for me, as I like panels and desktop applets. (I should add that my times quoted were mesaured using bootchart with a default set of services, no tweaking).
Not sure if this is in the right spot...but here goes. For those familiar with mac os x, they have a messenger program that along with iMessage, also allows you to send SMS text while on your computer via text message forwarding with your phone. I was just wondering if there is anything similar to this that I could use while in Debian 8?
View 0 Replies View RelatedI installed and removed Gnome3 and reinstalled Gnome2.x (epic fail and stupidity) and in the process I have lost audio. I tried to install whatever possible package was removed by studying /var/log/dpkg.log. This fixed my other issues like no right click on desktop and blunt looking buttons etc. Now I have everything in order but sound is missing. I don't see sound section in gnome-control-center. Here are some findings:

I am using debian squeeze and did an aptitude upgrade yesterday. Today I've found that VLC won't play any video; the files open and the audio plays, but the video is black. The aptitude log is below.
I note that VLC received a security upgrade a few days ago, but my suspicion is that the source of this problem is more likely to be the upgrade of libavcodec52 from version 4:0.5.2.6 -> 5:0.6.1+svn20101128-0.2. I believe this upgrade came from the debian-multimedia stable repo I have enabled.
Does this sound right, and what could I do to fix my VLC playback? This is new territory for me, and I'm slightly surprised that such an upgrade would come from the stable branch of debian-multimedia (although I know this is not an official source).

I am having trouble using touch pad in jessie. My touch pad was ok when it's in wheezy but after i updated to jessie, i can't really get used to it.
I don't know whether i setting it up wrongly, sometimes, my touchpad will keep dragging, without releasing. And if I click the bottom right of the touch pad, it's not right click; instead i have to use two fingers.
etc. So how can i change to back to a more traditional usage? Also, do jessie have a setting like ubuntu saying disable touch pad while typing?
Ubuntu 10.10 doesn't boot at all. The liveCD only boots once every like 30 attempts, installing from liveCD froze, but the Alternate CD worked and installed ubuntu. Now when I try to boot into it using GRUB, it freezes at the beginning of the boot process.With normal boot it freezes at line: Starting AppArmor profiles Skipping profile in /etc/apparmor.d/disable: usr.bin.firefox.With recovery mode it freezes even before showing me anything
A little kinda like the liveCD, if I try like 30 times, it might manage to boot once in normal mode.That line keeps on repeating, the the xxx.xxx integer changes each time, and this goes on forever.I tried removing my floppy drive, but it didn't help.I tried to boot with fd0=noprobeThe one time it booted, when I restarted, it froze while trying to restart.
In my pc I have Ubuntu and Windows while Debian on external HDD, and when boot from usb opens a black screen. Have done a boot-repair test and the result is this: URL... (there isn't MBR in sdb) now I need to istall manually it. What are the commands?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm using debian 8 on a notebook and since I tried to get the wifi working (another story...) I wanted to unload and load the alx driver module. So I used rmmod alx and when I tried to reload with modprobe, it didn't find the device (not the module). So I rebooted and now the notebook won't start. There's just the emrgency mode, so I log in as root and journalctl -xb gives me some erros:

Failed to start Load Kernel Modules.Unit systemd-mdoules-load.service entered failed state.Then it fails to start the modules ip, ppdev, parport_pc and fuse.Next error is

There was also an error at the first time "Failed to load autofs4", so loaded it manually with modprobe. As this worked, I opened the /etc/modules - which was empty, don't know whethere it was also empty before or not - and wrote autofs4 in the file. autofs4 seems to load succesfully, so I tried writing also ip, ppdev, parport_pc and fuse, but I just get the error for these last four twice... But lsmod shows some loaded modules (autofs4, ext4, crc16, mbcache, also alx and say 15 more).You should also know that I use an extra boot partition and use EFI.
