Debian Multimedia :: Distorted And Defect Screen After Kernel Upgrade To 2.6.32-5?

OS Environment : Debian Squeeze, Gnome, Compiz, kernel 2.6.32-5 Hardwares : Pentium4, ATI Radeon 9600 AGP8x
After upgrading the kernel and restarted, I've been having an issue with the screen. After logged in through GDM, the screen starts distorting, creating small colorful object and blurry

However, this problem does not exist on tty other than used by desktop ( tty1...tty6 is not affected ) And not in GDM too!!! My GDM shows up nicely, I let it there for hours and no distortion, no strange colors whatsoever.
KMS is enabled ( by default ) as I checked :

Upgraded Debian Lenny kernel from 2.6.26 to 2.6.32 along with Firmware to make my new wireless Linksys WMP600N card with ralink rt2860 chip on it work. I followed directions exctly from [URL]. I answed "YES" to all button options as there were statements threats there would be problems if i did not answer "yes". Eveything seemed to go OK. Only thing alarming during procedure was a statement " Config files still contain depreciated device names. The following configuration files still use some device names that may change when using new kernel: Etc/fstab:/dev scdo. I figure this file easely editable later so I did not worry.
Pleaseantly greated with new kernel 2.6.32 to boot but it fails to get to the log in screen to select GUI. I have previously been using Gnome and KDE3.5 back and forth.
I get the following mesages that I somewhat abriviated
Failure to start X server, Likely it is not set up corectly. View X server output? "yes" reports x.org.x server 1.4.2..........build OS debianlenny.... Check http:wiki.x.org to make sure you have latest version. Modual present The x server is now disabled.
I then booted old kernel and updated xorg with synaptic, some 52 packages and retried booting the new kernel with same results.
I have navigated to the /var/init.d directory and tried starting both Gnome and KDE by typing "kdm start" and "gdm start"with similar results. What have I messed up?

I just installed Debian (lenny) on my HP 2133 Mini-Note (KX869AT). I've managed to get everything working, even the Broadcom wireless adapter, but the display is too large for the actual screen size. To get the screen to a more manageable resolution, I did copy the xorg.conf file of another HP 2133 Mini-Note user. (It was probably a different model; there are several versions of the HP 2133, hence the model number in the description.) Icons and things hide off-screen. The text on the GNOME panel is quite large.

I'm using Debian Testing and I have a little problem with the fonts, fonts behave somewhat strange. Usually happens with Iceweasel, but I've noticed sometimes in the window list panel or terminal. To give you an idea of what I speak, I leave the image:
Look at the letter b, and not always the case with that letter, sometimes the S or L. I've tried several fonts. Even deleted the folder. fontconfig, but still happening. Has anyone had a similar problem? It can be a server problem with graphics? Using xserver-xorg-video-intel

I recently installed Debian 5.0 (Lenny) on a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop. I have been banging my head trying to figure out why my laptop display (15.6" optimum resolution 1366x768) is only running at 1024x768. This was not a problem in Ubuntu even as far back as 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) which came pre-installed.
I am running kernel 2.6.32 (from Backports) to get WiFi to work and it still hasn't remedied the video oddities.
How do I either:
1) Letterbox the 1024x768 so that it isn't distorted?
or, more preferably,
2) Display in the full 1366x768?
My video card is:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07)
I also have the xserver-xorg-video-intel driver from the stable repositories installed.

I have distorted sound when viewing SWF files on browsers. Tried both chrome and iceweasel. I have a Dell XPS with debian testing (64 bit), alsa is 1.0.23. Sound is working properly when playing formats other than swf.

Installed ubuntu 10.10 without any problems. Everything works fine until i installed the ati display drivers. After this ubuntu shows me 3 different screens before login that apparently broken (see attachments). After the last screen the "normal" login screen is shown.If i dont use the drivers everything looks fine, but then my gpu fan (radeon 4890hd) runs at 100% which is a bit noisy.

i have an installation of wheezy 7.8 i think. i was facing difficulties in read of matroska video. therefore have decided to installer gstreamer1.0 wich should be resolve my problem. i have added the backports repository in apt sources list. after an apt-get update i launch apt-get install gstreamer1.0 . i have noticed it have starting downloading more file than it needs i concluded that it was a upgrade or something like because the kernel was also updated. after the the packet downloading it has started the installation with some errors related to LOCALE LCC. it has stopped and restarted some services wich is normal. i have closed all others apps and restarted. Here start the hell. after the restart i have passed the kde login screen and after BLACK SCREEN with mouse working.
Alt+F2 don't open the krunner
What i have tried? i have rename the /home/jefcolbi/.cache and back it again, rename /home/jefcolbi/.kde and back it again. next i have tried to check the Xorg config file. i created a new one with X -configure, modified it to feet my system configuration this does not resolve the problem but add another the keyboard is not working in graphical mode.
My system configuration:
Toshiba laptop Satellite Pro L300
Dual core
3gb Ram
graphic card:Mobile Intel(R) GMA 4500MHD
sound card: Intel HD Audio
debian whezzy 7.8 with KDE
Note: everything was working fine before trying to install gstreamer1.O from backports repository

Yesterday I done an upgrade with apt and since that time whenever I boot up I am presented with only a blank screen and an unresponsive cursor. I cannot switch console using Ctl+Alt+F*. The only thing I can do is Alt+SysRq+(R,E,I,S) which kills gdm3 and gets me back to the console.
* I can get into Xorg fine via the startx command
* As a temporary fix, if I enable automatic login (via /etc/gdm3/daemon.conf) then gdm3 works.
But I can't get the normal authenticated login screen to work.
Output of journalctl for a failed attempt at running gdm3 with verbose debugging enabled:

One other thing worth noting, before upgrading yesterday, I changed mirrors and accidentally pasted in "stable" into /etc/apt/sources.list. So basically I did an initial upgrade, realised my mistake, switched back to testing (which I was on before) and done another upgrade, which is when I noticed this problem.

I recently upgrade my system from Jessie to Stretch, with no problem. A little later I upgrades Enlightenment from e17 to e20, and at some point shortly after that the second screen stopped working.
The nvidia X Server Settings correctly identifies both screens. But Enlightenment and xrandr does not see the second one at all. The second screen are on and the pointer moves correctly onto it, but no activity with left or right click. I have tried with the original xorg.conf, and generated a new one with nvidia-xconfig, but no difference. No obvious errors in any log-files either.

After a lot of googling and the artical in linux.com/archive/articles/119287 :: Got more than a gig of RAM and 32-bit Linux? Here's how to use it i came to know the solution i.e
1)I need to install the Bigmem-kernel to detect the ram more than 4Gb,
2) or change some kernel parameters in configuration file and rebuild the kernel
Is there any another solution for this to update operating system to detect the more RAM

First I tried to install suse 11.4 64 bit from the Live CD, but when I tried to install, the screen was totally distorted (only the mouse pointer was possible to see with no problem).
So I tried to install from the DVD. This time the graphical of the installation worked perfectly. So i installed KDE. (the .iso is perfect, i used the md5) Everything normal until the Login screen, again is totally distorted, and can observe only the mouse. But I could log in normally just typing the password and pressing enter, it made ​​the normal sound of suse opening the session, but remained totally distorted the image.
My computer is: HP Pavilion dv6000 - AMD Turion X2 64bit, with NVidia chipset (GeForce 7150M / nForce 630M). The suse 11.3 64bit was operating normally, with the NVidia drivers, but i installed some package that kde did not work anymore. So I decided to install 11.4.

i wasn't sure where to post this, so if there's a better place, someone please more this thread. i just installed 10.04 64-bit desktop on a ~4 year old hp a1610n (pic below). it works great for about 20 seconds at which point the screen becomes distorted and unresponsive. i'm not entirely sure, but i think the problem didn't start until after i activated the (recommended) nvidia driver. its hard to say though since i set up that driver very soon after the install. here's a pic of the desktop: click me

I recently got a new laptop (Aspire 5741) and have installed ubuntu 10.4 on it. I have been very happy with the computer and OS. However the only problem I have had is that I am unable to change the screen brightness. Last night I though I found a fix. I cant remember the specific thing but it was something similar to this [URL]. On reboot the ubuntu logo came up and a few seconds later it showed a distorted ubuntu logo. After this it just goes to a black screen. I have tried booting into recovery fail proof graphics mode, and the problem still arises.

Yesterday I upgraded the kernel from 2.6.24-26-generic to 2.6.24-27-generic (I'm still using Hardy Heron). After upgrade I uninstalled the previous Nvidia driver installation:

Recovery mode doesn't work, same problem. Taking the older kernel gives no problem. I have no 3rd party graphics driver installed. 10.04 was a fresh install on this machine. I cannot get a commandline, the screen just shuts down because of a lack of input.

Graphics is getting distorted whenever I move windows along the screen. This happened soon after I installed KDE desktop and compiz fusion on my pc. I am having 1GB ATI MOBILITY RADEON HD 54 graphics card (Seems like that was the problem). The first fix that I tried: Installed qt-devel compat-libstdc++-33 and then created an xorg.conf file by installing system-config-display and edited the file to include radeon under drivers then restarted --> this didnt work Compiled ATI drivers for linux ---> this also dint work However, I can view the o/p clearly when I type glxgears Seems like the issue is with this. But I donno how to change this

When I run the above command, the o/p includes direct rendering: yes" and also various OpenGL information concerning for "Mesa" but not for "ATI Technologies" I am facing this issue on KDE as well as Gnome.. In KDE, if I check activate Desktop graphics then I would get automatically logged out. In gnome if I select "Desktop Effects" then I get a message "3D acceleration not supported".

I run two sound cards on my system, one dedicated while the other is built-in on my motherbard.

I am not able to get any sound recorded through my mic using my XFi card. It records the sound my computer makes, thought. In other words, if I play a song, it'll play through the capture channel making people on voip application hear it. For some reason. But I am not able to get any sound through the mic.
I have tried to mute and unmute every channel in alsamixer, and tried to change the soundcard profile as well in gnome sound preferences. No luck.
If I use my NVidia built-in sound card however, I am able to talk. But after a random period of time, the sound through my headphones begin to distort, badly, while the voice from my mic comes through clear. People can hear me clearly, but I can't hear them at all because of the distortion. It sound really, really bad.
At first I thought it was a bug with skype, but it happens in other voip clients such as gTalk.

I'm running Lenny with the default kernel 2.6.26. I recently got a wireless card supported by the ath9k driver, so I followed the instructions on this site:http://wiki.debian.org/ath9kwhich had me install a 2.6.32 kernel image from lenny-backports. Everything installed fine without errors, but when I rebooted after the install, after the kernel messages scrolled by and the screen would normally switch to the gdm login screen, all I got was a blank screen with some distorted squares. I used Ctrl-Alt-F1 to switched to a shell and everything looked fine, but when I Ctrl-Alt-F7ed back to X, I got another black screen with distorted images. Any idea what could have caused this from the kernel upgrade, and what I can do?Edit:Here is the end of my /var/log/Xorg.0.log after booting:

Where do I look for guidance on such a kernel upgrade? My impression is that grub permits booting to an earlier kernel so a boo is recoverable. While not particularly relevant, my card is a Chronos Video Shuttle II.

Hi, I have a Creative HS-1200 headset. When I am listening to sound through it, and something makes a motion on screen(compiz, movie...really anything) then the sound is distorted. Like it takes a nanosecond pauses to redraw. This does not happen with my normal soundcard. Can anyone tell me how can I fix this?

I did a clean install to 10.04. Not too many issues except any sound I play sounds like it's underwater and pops while playing. I have tried to do the Pulse Audio install, but every time I loaded pauvcontrol (I think was the title), it would pop up "Connection Failure: Connection Refused." I tried to follow other guides, but they'd all fail because I'd be missing half of the files it changed. I have a Creative Labs X-Fi Fatality card that has given me troubles in the past, but usually, it works. I tried to install Creative's open driver, but again, I had an error when I attempted to Make the directory.

Every time the update-manager decides to upgrade the kernel my graphics driver is ****** up. I have had this problem in 10.04 and now in 10.10. Now I get dropped to the command prompt after an upgrade (I can also log in with fail-safe/low graphics mode). The problem is solved if I reinstall the package fglrx so nog big issue but it is rather annoying. What could be wrong? I am using ATI HD4770. I haven't tried open drivers yet.

I have a MyBookLive where i installed a Debian 2.6 kernel. The system is running fine so far. Because of an error message when apt-get upgrade (udev) i tried to upgrade to 3.16. Here's what i did:
- apt-get install linux-image-xx
- apt-get install linux-source-xx
- extract the source
- copied the old .config from running 2.6 kernel over to the 3.16 directory
- make oldconfig
- make uImage
- make modules
- make modules_install
- copied uImage to /boot
No error messages because its a headless device - its just not booting up.
