I've just installed gnome in debian squeeze and I can not find how to change gnome language. I've found that you have to change it in gdm, but i don't know how to add new languages to the current ones.

View 4 Replies View RelatedPreviously (on Lenny) I would boot my computer and it would happily boot through to the Gnome login page (the pretty graphical one). Now (on Squeeze) I get the plain old text login prompt. So I login normally and try running "startx". It comes up with a black screen and a mouse pointer. Nothing else. Ctrl+shift commands seem to work so I am able to get to another terminal. When I switch back to the first terminal there are just come Gnome startup messages.
I really need to have this working in order to do some "work". give me a sure fire way of either fixing this, even if it means instructions on re-installing Gnome? Normally I could copy log files from my Linux machine to my email computer but with no desktop I find this too difficult and really don't have the time to spend working out how to do it. (I have "work" to do as well). So, just briefly I will summarise the Xorg.0.log file:

My problem is that I am trying to install nvidia drivers I got integrated card nvidia geforce 6100 nforce and amd x2x64 processor and also squeeze x64, so I downloaded the driver but when I try to top gnome I cant
/etc/init.d/gdm stop it says no such file or directory
So I google it and I found that squeeze has genome 3 so I put:
/etc/init.d/gdm3 stop
and it just appears a black screen just with a prompt but without any shell, I cant sign in debian or do anything it is just a black screen and i try ctrl+alt+f1, f12, f8, space and nothing, I can write but it doesn't response the only thing that I can do is press ctrl+alt+dell and it restart the PC. How can I stop gnome to install my drivers?

how can i change the default language ,i have to .because if gnome is in English ,i can't run the Chines input method.
When I try to run GNOME, X gives me "Failed to start the X-server" etc and something about "not detecting screens." and if I try to run KDE it just hangs with the _ blinking waiting for the next command. I only tried out KDE to see if it was a GNOME problem. I uncommented the stuff in /etc/X11/xorg.conf (because I had them previously commented out) but that doesn't help. I'm stuck with a GUI-less computer now . What can I do about this? If more information is needed, do not hesitate to ask.

I installed Debian Squeeze with Gnome today. I'm unable to change from the default icon theme. I can change themes, but the icon theme remains default.Things I've tried:
- I've made a new user account.
- .gtkrc-2.0 in my home is auto-generated, .gtkrc.mine does not exist.

when i set a screensaver i can preview it and it runs fine, but when it times out the screen just goes blank.
how do i get the glx screensavers to show?

I am running Debian Squeeze 32bit with gnome-core installed. When I alter the acceleration or sensitivity within the pointer speed section of gnome-mouse-properties, my mouse does not act differently. Has anyone else encountered this problem? How can I change my mouse sensitivity? I have installed Debian Lenny previously and I recall that I was capable of changing the sensitivity.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI finally installed Squeeze on my laptop and found out that the XF86Audio multimedia keys do not work.
When I press them, they're correctly identified by xev but they do not produce the desired effect (raise/lower/mute volume, play/pause/stop/prev/next song in media players like Sonata).
Funnily enough though, they do work in Audacious, which has its own plugin to manage XF86Audio media keys.
So it's like the action of pressing these keys is not intercepted by the system and no event is triggered.
I think this might be due to a missing package or configuration but I have no idea where to look...

It all seems to work, however debuild gave an error about secret keys. Is this a sensible procedure? What happens in the (probably unlikely) event there is another source patch?I've gone to a tiling window manager as the result of the purchase of a wide screen LCD monitor. I like to have some stuff down the right hand side when running Firefox and OpenOffice in the main panes. Any configuration tricks welcome. Modern screens are the wrong shape!

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've just installed Squeeze 6.01a from the xfce iso image on an old PIII which has been running Lenny with xfce without any problems. It's a fresh install after a reformat.
Sounds and multimedia apps like gxine and mplayer all worked fine on Lenny and other older versions. Now they don't - not gxine, not mplayer not even VLC. Run from the menu they all abort - and if run in an xterm they all crash with the following message -

I've tried logging in both as root and as user and have typed in 'startx' or 'gnome-session' at the prompt but I get an error message "**(gnome-session:12020): WARNING **: Cannot open display:". I've searched the web for solutions but nothing works. I've had my debian squeeze for over three years now with no issues.

I have 2 instances where it still beeps though. Whenever GNOME first starts(before I login though) and if i am in GNOME at a terminal and type reboot. Any thoughts on disabling this?

I waited for several hours before trying to reconnect, but got the same message. Searching for the error led me to some bug reports from upwards of three years ago.
Strangely, this error hasn't occurred on any of my other squeeze systems.
I can ping login.oscar.aol.com as well as login.messaging.aol.com; both resolve to 205.188.251.43 for me. I tried changing the "Server" under "Advanced" to this address, but again I got the same error.
