Debian Multimedia :: Gnome - How To Change Background Image For Login Window

Jul 16, 2011

I'm fairly new to Debian/GNOME, and I'm running Squeeze and GNOME 2 and I have some questions. How exactly do I change the background image for the login window? I've looked up various suggestions but none of them seem to work - the appearances window does not ever seem to change the background image for the login screen. Also, whenever I log out or when I close the lid on my laptop and it suspends, I am unable to log back in - all I see is a black screen and my cursor, which I can move.

Debian :: Debian Squeeze / Gnome Icon Themes Don't Change

Feb 8, 2011

I installed Debian Squeeze with Gnome today. I'm unable to change from the default icon theme. I can change themes, but the icon theme remains default.Things I've tried:

- I've made a new user account.

- .gtkrc-2.0 in my home is auto-generated, .gtkrc.mine does not exist.

# -- THEME AUTO-WRITTEN DO NOT EDIT include "/usr/share/themes/Darklooks/gtk-2.0/gtkrc" include "/home/haunted/.gtkrc.mine"

# -- THEME AUTO-WRITTEN DO NOT EDIT

- I've tried installing a theme into my /home/.themes.

- I've reinstalled gnome-settings-daemon.

- Tried changing themes then doing a full reboot.

- Cursed it periodically.

Ubuntu :: Major Lag During Desktop Background Change & Startup?

Jun 6, 2010

It takes about 30 seconds for the desktop to 'fully load'. When I login I see my background, but nothing else. Then you wait 30 seconds and you see the panels appear. Is there any way to fix this lag, and make it an instant load? Cause really it should not take that long to load a panel with not really anything on it.

Ubuntu :: Change Gnome Background To Random Image (perl)?

Apr 8, 2011

First, I wrote a bare bones bash script to change the gnome desktop background to a random image [URL] Then, I realized there are dozens of bash scripts posted in the ubuntu forums just like this one [URL] next, rothalem & I rediscovered the drama of processing files in bash that have spaces in the name [URL] Finally, sflitman suggested dumping bash all together & just using perl [URL]

Result :

A pretty little perl script to change the gnome desktop wallpaper / background to a random image. - If you are unfamiliar with perl :

[URL]

The completed script isn't bullet proof but it will :

- accept command line arguments
- accept files & dirs with spaces in the name
- catch most errors or use the defaults.

Step 1 : Inherit the appropriate CPAN library ( from command line )

- Main Menu -> Accessories -> Terminal

Code:

sudo cpan File::Random

Step 2 : Cut-n-Paste this code into a perl script & change red line to the path_to_your_wallpaper_images

Code:

#!/usr/bin/perl -w
# rocuan & sflitman
use Cwd;
use strict;

Like the subject says, the whole system just hangs at gdm startup. No mouse or keyboard response. Didn't have this problem with lenny. My guess is there might be a problem with the graphics drivers. The box has ati rage 128 pro graphics card.

Networking :: Debian/Squeeze Fails To Get DHCP Address On Startup?

Mar 3, 2010

This one has been bugging me for some time now. The network interface (as defined in Debian's /etc/network/interfaces file) fails to obtain an IP address from myuter. However dhclient br0 does.I'm using br0 since I run a XP virtual machine.network/interface changes are from a Debian howto on setting up the tap interface.As near as I can tell, the /etc/init.d/networking script basically calls /sbin/ifup -a. ifup is a binary.My /etc/network/interfaces file is:

Debian Configuration :: GDM3 Can't Change The Background

I'm trying to change the background for GDM3, but nothing happens. I have edit /etc/gdm3/greeter.gconf-defaults and /usr/share/gdm/greeter-config/20_debian and then dpkg-reconfigure gdm3 and invoke-rc.d gdm3 reload, but it still has a horrible, green background colour.

Debian Multimedia :: Can't Change Login Background

May 28, 2015

I recently installed Debian 8 with the Xfce Desktop Environment. I don't like the background in the login screen and want to change it. After some Googling I discovered that the path to the background is stored in the file /etc/lightdm/lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf.

Unfortunately, whenever I change the background field I'm left with a black background during login. (Yes, I triple checked that I spelt the path correctly). Does the login background have to meet some criteria I don't know about, like being a certain resolution?

EDIT: Here's the content of /etc/lightdm/lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf:
Code: Select all#
# background = Background file to use, either an image path or a color (e.g. #772953)
# theme-name = GTK+ theme to use
# icon-theme-name = Icon theme to use
# font-name = Font to use
# xft-antialias = Whether to antialias Xft fonts (true or false)

Debian :: Can't Run GNOME Or KDE On Squeeze

May 30, 2010

When I try to run GNOME, X gives me "Failed to start the X-server" etc and something about "not detecting screens." and if I try to run KDE it just hangs with the _ blinking waiting for the next command. I only tried out KDE to see if it was a GNOME problem. I uncommented the stuff in /etc/X11/xorg.conf (because I had them previously commented out) but that doesn't help. I'm stuck with a GUI-less computer now . What can I do about this? If more information is needed, do not hesitate to ask.

Debian Configuration :: Cannot Change Prompt In Squeeze

Dec 3, 2010

I looked into my shell 'profile' on my running lenny and copied the PS1 definition over to my [virtual] new squeeze machine, but astoundingly, the prompt does not change!

The prompt always remains to be like this:${debian_chroot:+($debian_chroot)}u@h:w$

This does definitively not stem from 'profile' and I cannot find, where it is defined and how I can override this. If I do it interactively, in a terminal [terminal running in Gnome], it works like expected. In that script, even if I use 'unset PS1',followed by PS1= ... / export PS1, it does not change,Someone with the knowledge and/or a good idea would be great!

Debian Multimedia :: Upgraded To Squeeze And Now Gnome Won't Work

May 24, 2010

Previously (on Lenny) I would boot my computer and it would happily boot through to the Gnome login page (the pretty graphical one). Now (on Squeeze) I get the plain old text login prompt. So I login normally and try running "startx". It comes up with a black screen and a mouse pointer. Nothing else. Ctrl+shift commands seem to work so I am able to get to another terminal. When I switch back to the first terminal there are just come Gnome startup messages.

I really need to have this working in order to do some "work". give me a sure fire way of either fixing this, even if it means instructions on re-installing Gnome? Normally I could copy log files from my Linux machine to my email computer but with no desktop I find this too difficult and really don't have the time to spend working out how to do it. (I have "work" to do as well). So, just briefly I will summarise the Xorg.0.log file:
