in configuring a fresh install of Squeeze. I discovered that it is possible to power off the system under gnome simply by pressing the power button or by selecting the "Shut Down" entry on "System" menu.However I need to restrict this option only to root. How can I do that?
View 7 RepliesI'm running openSUSE 11.2 Gnome Desktop Environment. Whenever I try to either shutdown or restart my machine as a "normal user", I've been logged off instead! When I try to re-login the screen (xorg) freezes. I don't know how to debug this problem. The problem could be related to hal or d-bus or policykit or X-org..... simply I don't know. N.B. I can shutdown and restart my machine only as "super-user" (root).

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have been a Debian user for some time already, and lately I experienced a weird behaviour regarding shutdowns/restarts. The thing is my computer shuts down very very slowly, but not because of HDD activity, nor because of CPU activity (as far as I know, I may be wrong). It stops at some point, and after that, it hangs between 5 seconds and... even 5 minutes. The time in which comes back to normal and continues the shutdown process varies and has absolutely no pattern.
This is where it hangs (the last line appeared because I disconnected the mouse):
As the object, when I shutdown or restart my system, this will stuck on black screen for about 30/40 second and then continue...
My system is debian testing with kernel 4.1.0-2
Come across with a situation where all methods of shutdown result in a restart/reboot? I've tried commands:
- shutdown
- halt
- poweroff
.. with various parameters, nothing works. The laptop seems to power off, but after a sec it restarts/reboots. I've Googled high and low, but there's very little on this topic. Maybe it is specific to the current kernel in Wheezy? I'm not suspecting a harware failure, since this was not happening with Windows installed.
This happens on me with Wheezy on a HP Elitebook 8530w.
I've had Windows XP Home installed on my netbook (Toshiba NB205) and I've just tried to install squeeze via net install. In particular, I installed grub. Everything seemed to go ok during the installation, but when I boot up, all that appears is a blank screen with nothing but at "j" and a cursor. One thing I can think of that might offer a clue, is that when asked to installed grub, the installer said it recognized two operating systems: Microsoft Windows XP Home, and Windows NT/XP. The latter is not really an operating system, but the backup partition.
I don't know how this might affect grub's functioning. What does this "j" mean? Looking at this: [URL]. Could this have some thing to do with boot flag? Should I switch it to my NTFS partition instead of my root partition? Doing that at least let's me boot into Windows. But that's not what I want. I've never dual booted before. So I booted back up with my USB, intending to reinstall Debian, and it loaded grub instead. So apparently grub is now on my USB. Then it booted me into Debian.
I have a set of vm's with stable, testing, and sid to keep track of how things are going. When I did an apt-get dist-upgrade with squeeze last week, things seemed to OK (350 package updates) until the end. It didn't seem to like and / or was confused by a kernel dependency.
I am not too concerned yet. Because these are in vm's, I do a snapshot before any significant change. I can futz around with impunity because I have that backup.
I re-booted, and tried the apt-get dist-upgrade again with same results. I think I also tried apt-get -f install.
So I reverted to the snapshot, and will simply try again in the future. I recall that with lenny as testing, the font-desktop was really screwed up for about a period of 6 weeks.
However, just in case someone else runs into this:
1) a re-boot worked, but the failure of apt-get made me nervous enough to revert.
2) waiting for corrections has seemed to work in the past (with a single exception with a 4-disk SCSI software RAID10 update that failed to re-boot lenny successfully after what seemed to be a minor update -- that was on a real system, not a vm. I haven't gotten back to look at that.)
All of as now the add-to-panel item that via it you can shutdown the PC without the need of typing any password to gain root privileges.
How is this possible? I know that fro default the login screen is run by root but how do this app sends the signal to the login-screen to shutdown?
I mean, this app is run without root privileges by me, the simple user, and when clicked the PC shutdowns via a signal from this app to the login screen....
How can I call this signal to an app of mine?
I recently just installed Squeeze on an ia64 system and was having some troubles with running VNC.I get the following error, more specifically for some reason I get a malloc - memory corruption error:

After display all the code above, it just stops. The port 5901 is still closed - if it runs properly, would it open automatically?Is there something that is incompatible? Or am I missing some system configuration component?
My system is a three days old Linux version 2.6.32-5-amd64 (Debian 2.6.32-35) with an Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 60 @ 2.80GHz. It does start, goes through the grub and then spits out strange messages and just freezes before the KDE can be started. I have to restart again, until it really boots everything. This is happening in a random pattern.
I activated bootlog, but as far as I can see, the log only tracks, if the system is really booting. So I also have the dmesg copied into pastebin. These are the only two logs I know, now.

View 8 Replies View RelatedWhen I try to run GNOME, X gives me "Failed to start the X-server" etc and something about "not detecting screens." and if I try to run KDE it just hangs with the _ blinking waiting for the next command. I only tried out KDE to see if it was a GNOME problem. I uncommented the stuff in /etc/X11/xorg.conf (because I had them previously commented out) but that doesn't help. I'm stuck with a GUI-less computer now . What can I do about this? If more information is needed, do not hesitate to ask.

View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen I activate Tor in Iceweasel, it forbids me access to the internet completely. Even attempting Google results in "Iceweasel is configured to use proxy server that is refusing connection".
I have seen this in Lenny, too - it was caused by activating Tor without having installed privoxy. I installed privoxy and everything was okay. In Squeeze, Tor is using polipo. Polipo is installed and running. I have not played with settings of polipo or Tor, the configuration is the same as it was after installation.
What can be wrong? I am a rather an user than a networking guru. I am connected to internet by means of DHCP, no local lans, no special routings, no additional proxies. I have already tired to reinstall polipo.

I am running Debian 6 as a media server (SMB) and it is tied to a UPS, I used gnome power management to set up a low battery shutdown but this UPS also is powering another embedded computer. I am a member of the disk and fuse groups, /dev/fuse is owned by root:fuse, and /sbin/mount.ntfs points to /sbin/mount.ntfs-3g, which in turn points to the ntfs-3g executable. I kind of need this ASAP. I am supposed to be finishing with this machine in 35min, and I am dead in the water without the ability to copy some files from the Squeeze ext4 partition over.

I found a thread that indicated that this bug was fixed in the next kernel version: 2.6.32-6. I am willing to upgrade the kernel to get rid of my problems. Is a squeeze kernel at 2.6.32-6 or higher available? If so, where? I have not compiled my own kernel, and am not very interested in getting into that.
