Debian Multimedia :: Transparent Desktop Graphic Displaying System Info

Mar 13, 2011

I've seen some desktop screengrabs which have included a transparent graphic (usually in the upper right corner of the screen) that displays current system information such as the hostname, kernel revision, CPU utilization, etc., that is constantly updated. Is that something that is available from Debian? I would like to install it to check it out, if it's available.

Ubuntu :: Conky Wireless Info Not Displaying?

Nov 7, 2010

I'm trying to display Wi-Fi network info using Conky. I've got it to display the IP address and the upload/download speeds, but for some reason it won't display the network SSID or wireless signal strength. Here's the relevant portion of my conky configuration:

Wi-Fi:
Network: ${wireless_essid eth1}
Signal Strength: ${wireless_link_qual_perc eth1}%
IP address: ${addr eth1}
Download Speed: ${downspeedf eth1} Kb/sec
Upload Speed: ${upspeedf eth1} Kb/sec

It's not the most frustrating problem in the world, but I've been unable to figure out the solution myself after several hours of perusing previous similar problems with Conky configs.

I changed the /etc/webalizer.conf file as described in the above article and try to run it manually same results. /etc/cron.daily/00webalizer Error: Can't change directory to /home/webalizer/When I put the original dir back in the path it writes to /var/www not /var/www/output like it should. I even tried a local /var/wwww/output dir. Then I tried a link to /home/webalizer/output (a dir I created) and same results.(with orginal .cfg in place)I go to my www page remote or on the local network I get page not found errors. In summary.1. Why wont the /etc/webalizer.cf file allow me to change the location of the files?2. How do I display the www page to view the data?3. How can I secure the www page so only I can view the data.

Software :: Squid Transparent Proxy Only For Static Info (.jpeg, Png Css Etc.)?

Feb 15, 2011

I am trying to fight problems with nfs on a loadbalanced webserver and sometimes when I get a ton of hits it seems that nfs is not quite able to handle the read requests and the load goes high on nodes. I will try to replace nfs soon with either gfs or glusterfs, but in the meanwhile I thought that it would be a lot better if there would not be so much traffic going on over any network file system.

So basically, I don know yet if it possible, but has any of you ever set up squid to be a cache server for static info like pictures and css only ? I really cant have squid cashing everything as html, since the site is very dynamic. I have 1 resource controller that serves all files for the nodes, a seperate sql server and loadbalanced nodes that handle only apache and APC atm. But I was thinking of adding squid transparent proxy caching on to them to have less traffic over nfs.

Yesterday I upgraded the system with:

Code: Select allaptitude full-upgrade

And today when I booted it up again I found the desktop didn't work anymore. There's nothing on the desktop but the wallpaper, all icons have disappeared and I can't click or select anything. The top and bottom panels still work though. This is the list of packages I installed and upgraded according to /var/log/apt/history.log are:

Code: Select allgstreamer1.0-libav:amd64 (1.4.4-2, automatic)
bind9-host:amd64 (9.9.5.dfsg-9, 9.9.5.dfsg-9+deb8u2),

libfontembed1:amd64 (1.0.61-5, 1.0.61-5+deb8u1),

[code]....

I would like to downgrade the package that spoiled the desktop.

Debian :: Monitor Info In System Settings -> Displays

Jan 18, 2016

I am running Wheezy 7.9 and recently created a file, in xorg.conf.d, to set the monitor configuration because the EDID is not always read from the monitor. Everything works great but when the EDID is not read the monitor name, as shown in System Settings>Displays, shows as Unknown. I have the vendor info and modelname in the config file but they do not show in the Display GUI. Is there some variable that I can set in order to get a good monitor name displayed?

Probably should include some more information. I am using the Gnome Classic desktop and gdm manager. Here is the monitor conf file that I put in /etc/X11/xorg,conf.d

Code: Select allSection "Monitor"
  Identifier "Monitor0"
  VendorName "VSC"

Debian Multimedia :: Konqueror Stopped Displaying Thumbnails Of JPGs, PNGs

May 4, 2010

I just installed KDE and I had 2 minor problems with Konqueror:

1) Every time I emptying the trash, I'm getting the error message: "The file or folder /...path here.../.Trash-1000/files/...filename here does not exist.". Seems like I had deleted this file, and before emptying the trash, I deleted somehow this file outside Debian installation (probably from a live cd). Other than that, trash is working OK. I'm just wondering if there's a way to get rid of the error message. (Of course emptying the trash from command line, doesn't brings any message).

2) Konqueror stopped displaying thumbnails of JPGs, PNGs etc. (with the exception of Photobook view, which is not very convenient for large number of photos).

I bypassed this problem, installing d3lphin (since dolphin is not available for lenny), and browsing the photo catalogs with it.

Debian Multimedia :: DisplayLink USB Graphic Adapter With Intel I915

Jun 6, 2014

I'm trying to set up an HP DisplayLink USB graphic adapter on Debian 6 to be paired with the notebook's integrated Intel i915 video card. I use a custom 3.11.1 kernel in which the options for VGA arbitration, fbdev framebuffer and DisplayLink driver are enabled as built-in, not as modules.

The device works and I'm able to correctly run an X session on a DVI monitor connected to my notebook thru this USB graphic adapter. However, I'm still not able to use both the DisplayLink device and the integrated Intel i915 at the same time under X, with the purpose to extend the desktop area over the two screens, side by side.

During a boot, if the DisplayLink adapter is detected over the USB cable, the X-server's Intel driver is repudiated as shown in the logs below, and the main notebook's screen stops working with X. (nonetheless, it still functions on the "Alt-F1" text terminal).

Relevant portion of /var/log/Xorg.0.log
In particular, it shows: [ 2509.084] (II) UnloadModule: "intel"
Code: Select all[  2509.061] (II) FBDEV: driver for framebuffer: fbdev
[  2509.061] (II) intel: Driver for Intel Integrated Graphics Chipsets: i810,
        i810-dc100, i810e, i815, i830M, 845G, 854, 852GM/855GM, 865G, 915G,
        E7221 (i915), 915GM, 945G, 945GM, 945GME, Pineview GM, Pineview G,

[Code] ....

In case it is required, this is the relevant excerpt of my xorg.conf. In my full xorg.conf file installed locally, no other options deal with graphics or screens.

Code: Select all# All down here is required for DisplayLink
# Depth must be 16 bits for all the screens to support DisplayLink
Section "Device"
    Identifier  "IntelVideo"
    Driver      "intel"
EndSection

Debian Multimedia :: Iceweasel Page Rendering - Not Displaying Portions Of Pages Properly ?

Jun 10, 2011

I guess this is a part deux, since I already posted one rendering issue which was eventually resolved ... having to do with the themes of this Debian Forum. Well, I don't know if this is related to that, but yesterday I noticed on another site that my Iceweasel 4.01 is not displaying portions of pages properly. See attached images. Both Chrome & Opera display that page correctly, I've included a screenshot of the same page with Chrome. I have JAVA installed and everything works perfectly fine accross the board on all browsers, except for this "once in a while" issue with Iceweasel. I've noticed this "missing content oddity" on three sites so far (out of 50 or more). No problem with eBay, craigslist, paypal, and other major players.

Open the images with a new tab, then compare both images side by side for best results.

Ubuntu :: Desktop Is Not Displaying Files

Jul 4, 2011

My desktop is not displaying files that I put on the desktop days ago. I checked all four workspaces. All the files are still accessible from Nautilus > Desktop. When I drag a file icon (from Nautilus to the empty desktop) and release, the icon does not drop on the desktop, the icon quickly moves back to the folder where it came from. The top and bottom panels of the desktop still operate normally.I am running Ubuntu 11.04 64-bit with classic-Ubuntu desktop.I also noticed that Startup Applications is missing "chrome" that I added this morning.I am the only user on this system. The system is a duel boot Ubuntu - win7. The Ubuntu partition is formated ext4 and there is a separate NTFS-formated partition named "storage" for folders that are accessible from both Ubuntu and win7. That should not be an issue because the desktop folder is on the Ubuntu partition, /home/[user]/Desktop. I have not booted win7 in the last few days. The desktop first
appeared empty after I did two things:

1) installed CryptKeeper from Ubuntu Software Center
2) Enable Automatic Login

After I clicked Applications > System > CryptKeeper, the desktop did not respond to mouse clicks. I did not find any CryptKeeper instructions. I don't know how to use CryptKeeper. The login screen still asked for credentials after I rebooted. So I uninstalled CryptKeeper, disable Automatic Login, and rebooted. But the desktop is still not displaying the files.Could CryptKeeper have changed something in my profile?Does Ubuntu have a log file to see exactly what I did? What else can I try to restore my desktop and enable Automatic Login?

Ubuntu :: Left And Top Menus And Desktop Not Displaying / Show That?

Nov 18, 2010

I've been using Ubuntu for several years, and wanted to try the netbook remix on my old Acer Aspire 5050 laptop.

I tried to install and switch from desktop 10.10 to netbook 10.10, and the home page and menus didn't display properly. I took this as being due to some conflict with an exiting bit of software (I use it as a LAMP server and dev machine, so it had a lot of stuff one it). Keen to try the netbook edition, and clean down my laptop, I installed in from scratch, formatting the HDD etc.

Anyway, the issue is still the same.

It is quite hard to describe what is displayed. The left menu is just empty, with no icons. The top bar is also empty. When you mouse over the left menu, blank pop-outs appear. Also, some icons are blank or mangled. Occasionally, when I close a dialogue, or do an alt-tab, the left menu icons appear, but only for a split second.

Anyway, screen dumps (reduced to half size) will explain this better, so here are a couple...

Top and left menus showing as empty semi transparent bars.

Same with an app running

with mouse over a left menu item, and a blank pop-out with black surround. code...
