General :: Image Viewer With Transparent Window?
Aug 17, 2011I would like to display a fully opaque image (e.g. PNG RGB8) on the desktop in an image viewer - but such that I can set the window (showing the image) to be, say, 50% transparent (so I could see through and compare with other windows below). It would be even better if the viewer just shows a "panel" instead of a "window" (i.e. I'd prefer just the image shown, possibly with a border - instead of a full blown window with menubar, titlebar etc).
I'm aware that in Compiz, it should be possible to run a plugin, and have any window you want transparent - but I was hoping for a solution (viewer) that would not be Compiz-specific (and even more preferred, if it is neither Gnome nor KDE specific - but I'm not sure that is possible).

Jul 4, 2010On some themes (like dust sand) the terminal goes transparent. I checked the profile, and it has a solid color settings, so this must have been changed from somewhere else and I can't get rid of the stupid transparency.

Feb 4, 2011I am trying to figure out how to make my terminal emulator dynamically transparent ( see through to the action below that window - Browser, video et cettera and not just the default wallpaper) . I figured out how to make transparent but not "dynamic". I have seen people mentioned you need to enable compositing but I am unsure how to do that in Gnome. I recall from a prior use of XFCE this was an option in that WM but I can't find in Gnome or compiz (if needed)
I am running Gnome on Debian Squeeze and have installed compiz. Any direction would be appreciated. I find reading web tutorials through the terminal to be very helpful so I can practice the command line or even practice commands while watching a good video .
Fedora Installation :: No Terminal Window In KDE 4.2.3-1
Jun 2, 2009Have installed fedora core 10 [kernel 2.6.27.24-170.2.68.fc10.i686 on intel core 2 Duo machine all disks encrypted. When I try to obtain a terminal window from run level 5 (KDE desktop environment) I get a bouncy terminal icon that disappears after about 15-20 seconds. No terminal window. The only way to get a command line is to press ctrl-alt-F2 and return to runlevel 3. How do I get a functional command line in runlevel 5?

Jun 6, 2011Does anyone know how to set the background of a terminal to be an image, and not have it slightly transparent? I've set an image as my Terminal background, but now when I open a terminal over other applications I can see those applications through my Terminal background. Is there any way to stop this from happening?

I was also able to define a default window size of a new terminal window. But since after upgrading to to the first release this year and a complete new installation of the current release Maverick i do not find this option anymore. Feb 7, 2010Newly installed Debian system from years with Fedora. Ran system update and system got hosed, booted but no Gnome. Got Gnome back after MANY 'aptitude upgrade's. Xemacs disappeared! Along with other things I installed. Tried to install Xemacs but it is broken and will not install, complains about dpkg TOO current(?). So downloaded Xemacs for Xemacs.org and compiled source, installed.
Now when I start Xemacs is does not run in an X window but runs emacs in a terminal window. If I run it from a script, it complains about 'not in tty window'.

Aug 26, 2011I find xcompmgr more than adequate for making a desktop look pretty modern, and I don't like the more extravagentCompiz gimmicks - but there is one thing that irritates when using xcompmgr which someone here might have worked round.
Rounded window borders don't draw and redraw properly when using the Terminal (gnome-terminal and the LXDE and Xfce ones) or system monitor and moving them from their default place. You get this little white botch at the corners. I'm not massively technical and I'm ambivalent about how much more I want to learn as I have plenty of creative outlets already, but I would like to solve this. Somehow xcompmgr is treating these programs as a different class? It's capable of drawing the window borders properly as it is just these two programs that get botched. Possibly this doesn't get noticed as maybe people usually use xcompmgr with openbox and LXDE and their square window borders. I did do a search but there was nothing matching what I saw.
